Introduction
Achievements are gained by doing things, from exploring the world to defeating dungeon bosses. There are many achievements - some for anglers! There are 2 types of achievement:
- Personal: Completed by individual anglers. Personal achievements often involve catching certain rare fish. Most achievements are personal.
- Guild: Completed by members of a guild. Guild achievements typically require a certain number of catches from across your entire guild, not per member.
A list of current and possible achievements is available to you ((by clicking the shield icon from the main toolbar)). Examining each achievement will show what needs to be done, or how far you have already progressed. Guild achievements are only shown for anglers that are in guilds.
Personal achievements can be earnt Battle.net account-wide:
- Most achievements are only account-wide once completed - incomplete achievements' criteria are not shared.
- However most meta-achievements, like Accomplished Angler, do not now require all constituent achievements on the same character.
- Titles are expected to be account-wide.
Every achievement awards points. These points cannot be used for anything - they are purely a measure of how much you have done. One set of achievements gives a title, "Salty".
Rank Achievements
There are personal achievements attained by reaching the maximum skill for a certain rank in a profession. Each rank awards 10 Achievement Points:
- Journeyman - 150 skill.
- Expert - 225 skill.
- Artisan - 300 skill.
- Master - 375 skill.
- Grand Master - 450 skill.
- Illustrious - 525 skill.
- Zen Master - 600 skill.
The personal achievement, "Skills to Pay the Bills" requires at least 450 skill in Fishing, First Aid and Cooking. Further achievements are available for reaching 525 and 600 in Fishing, First Aid, Cooking and Archaeology. These achievements are not formally part of the fishing category.
Fish Catch Achievements
There are 6 personal fishing achievements for simply catching modest numbers of fish (or other fished items), each of which is worth 10 points (60 total).
- 25 Fish - Fish up 25 items.
- 50 Fish - Fish up 50 items.
- 100 Fish - Fish up 100 items.
- 250 Fish - Fish up 250 items.
- 500 Fish - Fish up 500 items.
- 1000 Fish - Fish up 1000 items.
Specific Fishing Achievements
The table below lists specific personal fishing achievements (except achievements for ranks, catches, or Feats of Strength).
There is also an achievement for reaching Exalted with The Anglers. This achievement is not formally part of the fishing category.
Guild Fishing Achievements
There are several guild fishing achievements, all of which require a number of catches from pools. These require a certain number of catches from across your entire guild (not per member):
- That's A Lot of Bait - Catch 10,000 fish from fishing pools.
- We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat - Catch 25,000 fish from fishing pools.
- Pandaren Angler - Catch 25,000 fish from fishing pools in Pandaria.
- Like Shooting Fish In A Barrel - Catch 50,000 fish from fishing pools.
That's A Lot of Bait allows the purchase the recipe for Seafood Magnifique Feast (from guild vendors in cities). Catches from Pandarian pools count towards both the Pandaren Angler achievement and the other pool catch achievements.
Feats of Strength
Feats of Strength are achievements which are either limited to one angler per realm, or limited to a (past) period of time, or are exceptionally hard... or all 3!
- The Deadliest Catch - Personal achievement that was available for fishing up the Hydra (Gahz'ranka) in Zul'Gurub before Cataclysm. Now impossible to complete.
- Realm First! Grand Master Angler - First angler to reach 450 fishing skill on the realm. Only one per realm, regardless of faction.
- Realm First! Illustrious Angler - First angler to reach 525 fishing skill on the realm. Only one per realm, regardless of faction.
- Realm First! Zen Master Angler - First angler to reach 600 fishing skill on the realm. Only one per realm, regardless of faction.
Realm first angler achievements do not award titles, but are announced across the realm.
Titles
The title, "Salty", is awarded for gaining the achievement Accomplished Angler. This fishing title is not unique to one person: Any angler can gain it.

Comments about Achievements Overview
Below are readers' comments about "Achievements Overview":
WotLK: Fishing and Achievements
Itty, July 2008:
As mentioned on the "Achievements" page here at El's Anglin, several (seventeen, to be exact) fishing-related achievements are so far planned for Wrath of the Lich King. Many are not yet finished but will be fleshed out as Beta unfolds.
I was fortunate enough to be invited to Beta recently and, like any good (obsessed) angler, one of my first acts was to try fishing. Sadly, there are no new "fishable" fish yet in the game. There is a "northern barb fish", which is the objective of a two-part quest where the first part involves literally banging on stuff that looks like seaweed until one of three things pops out: an undead spy, a crab, or the barbed fish. You then get pulled into combat with whatever popped out. It's reminiscent of the Terokkar "Taken in the Night" quest where you have to free people from spider cocoons. In other words, not very fun. It took me a while to do the two-part series and there wasn't even a fun item reward. It was just around 4 or 5 gold per stage.
As also indicated here on El's Anglin', there's also a Northern Salmon quest fish, but I haven't done that quest yet.
Going back to achievements, some of the most interesting achievements tie into Burning Crusade. There are two Mr. Pinchy achievements: one for getting his pet, the other for fishing him (or one of thirteen other rare fish). Oddly, the "Mr. Pinchy's Magical Crawdad Box" achievement does not automatically light up the "The Deadliest Catch" achievement, although you obviously need to catch Mr. Pinchy to get his box. I submitted a "bug" suggestion regarding this.
There is also an achievement relating to the Old Man Barlo fishing quests. If you've done all five of them, this achievement lights up. This achievement was lit up for me immediately upon entering Beta without having to do them all again.
The most interest achivement of all, though, is connected to the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza. There is a "Master Angler of Stranglethorn" achievement but, frustratingly, it does not currently check to see if you've already won the tournament. It did not light up for me, despite me having in my possession and using both of the rewards available from the tournament. There are other achievements in the game that check for possessed items, though. For example, I got a "Feat of Strength" achievement because I have a really old, no longer available, epic mount in my bank. If the game can look for such an item, it can clearly look for others like bind-on-pickup tournament victory items. Hopefully, this will be fixed as Beta progresses. I submitted a suggestion on this, too.
That's about all there is to report on fishing in WotLK so far. I haven't even found a Grand Master fishing trainer yet, and I don't expect to see one soon. As we all know, fishing is never near the top of the developers' to-do lists, so it will likely be a while before fishing pools and new fish make it into Beta.
As they do, though, I'll keep you updated.
Happy fishing!
Itty, StormreaverSharina, July 2008:
I hope they fix those "bugs" in beta before release.
I cannot imagine how many people might be frustrated about having their previous wins/achievements not count in the current time. It's kind of a slap in the face to the old school players, who in my opinion, have been very loyal to this game.
I don't want to have to win it again -- also I think this is unfair to the people who have not won it yet. They may have to compete against other first timers, AND people who are trying to win it again just to get their achievement checked off. :(
el, July 2008:
Thanks for posting, Itty. Glad to see I'm not the only one fishing in the beta! I look forward to further reports.
I've updated the Wrath of the Lich King pages.
Interesting that you received the Old Man Barlo achievement retrospectively. El did not, even though she has done them all many times. I assume that "The Deadliest Catch" requires a catch because some of the fish are not bound on pickup, so having them in your inventory means nothing. But that isn't the case for Mr. Pinchy and a few others.
Tigole (one of the designers) is active on various forums at the moment, giving the impression that Blizzard still haven't finished working on achievements. So maybe we won't all have to win the Booty Bay contest again... It will be interesting to see how many points they award for winning (the current points totals are place-holders only). Personally I think winning the contest is one of the hardest activities in the entire game, particularly on a mature PvP realm. But those that have never tried tend to assume it just requires "fishing" skill, and so is "easy".
The current beta is still an alpha: Lots of core content missing (quests, zones, professions, abilities, you name it), and minimal server stability (last night Northrend was crashing or hitting 5-minute lag spikes several times each hour).
Fishing as a profession is essentially not yet implemented. I hope they find time to complete it. In The Burning Crusade nothing fishing-related changed after the start of beta testing. That meant the release version had missing content (Blade's Edge, recipes in new low-level areas, etc) and design flaws (Golden Darter out of balance, broken distribution of fresh/salt-water fish in new low-level areas - which is happening again now in Stormwind, pools that couldn't be fished by those with short legs, and so on).
Oberweiss, July 2008:
Thank you for the updates! Keep them coming. Also, thanks for submitting those suggestions regarding retroactively achieving the fishing contest goal. I already get dirty looks for having won the trinket on my druid. I wouldn't want to make her win a third time; I might be exiled.
Sharina, July 2008:
Those of you who are in the Closed Beta could also make a post regarding the achievement for the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza, or any other issues on the Beta forums. Perhaps Blizzard will note the amount of feedback and act accordingly to change/fix things.
There is already a post being made about the Master Angler issue here:

Itty, July 2008:
In what may be a world first, I won the fishing tournament twice in one day. The first tournament was on my hunter alt, giving her the trinket. The second win was two hours later on the PvP Beta server. Just between you and me, I was the only one even in Stanglethorn Vale on the Beta server during this time, so I could have taken the full two hours and still won. Let's keep that our little secret, though ;)
Anyway, I fished the tournament to test the "Master Angler of Stranglethorn" achievement. Although Tigole has indicated that the achievement now checks for the pole or trinket, this build is not yet active. When I logged in, I was still not credited with the win. Upon winning the tournament, though, the achivement did light up.
Sadly, this achievement did not unlock a title to display next to my name. This was quite disappointing, of course. I submitted a suggestion reading:
"The "Master Angler of Stranglethorn" achievement, unlocked by winning the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza, does not currently provide an in-game title for players to display next to their name. Players have been calling for this title since the introduction of the tournament, and the new achievement system would be the perfect mechanism for implementing this title.
Please consider a "Master Angler" title to accompany this achievement (e.g, "Itty, Master Angler"). It would make a lot of players happy."
Hopefully, such a title will eventually be added in, but only time will tell. I'll keep you updated with any developments. In the meantime, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed!
Itty, Stormreaver
Zhivago, August 2008:
Just found a post on worldofraids.com that linked to this page listing all of the WotLK achievements, including ALOT of fishing achievements.
Have fun!!!
Asseel, August 2008:
Lots of things to get, but at least they seem manageable. Though they'll likely adapt the fishing from a school one to require more than one time doing it. Probably most if not all of them. Still, a doable list. Though the fishing in SW or IF one might be tricky for me...LOL
Stephenn, August 2008:
Hi all, I've recently received a beta key and will be glad to pass on any information that I can gleem from the beta. I noticed the same bugs that El mentioned above. But also I didn't get credit for doing all 5 of Old Man Barlow's quests (Even though I've done them 100 times probably) Submitted bug report.

http://wowengineer.wordpress.comStephenn, August 2008:
It looks like they've renamed a bunch of the pools of wreckage. For the achievement named "The Scavenger" you have to catch something from the following pools of wreckage:
Steam Pump Flotsam (Zangarmarsh)
Bloodsail Wreckage (STV Coastal)
Schooner Wreckage (Hillsbrad Foothills, Wetlands)
Waterlogged Wreckage (STV River, Theramore Beach)
Floating Wreckage (Feralas)The location in parentheses is where I found them.
I also noticed that Oily Blackmouth schools are now called Abundant Oily Blackmouth Schools, or Lesser OBMS, Teeming OBMS, etc. Same with Firefin Snapper Schools. I'm assuming that each level has a different number of possible fish in it.
BTW I'm on the Northrend PvE server so if you're there look me up.

http://wowengineer.wordpress.comel, August 2008:
Past repeatable quest achievements aren't tracked, it seems. I'm currently trying to do all the dailies to check that Barloed does award eventually. Curiously, there has been a change to the way the quest fish appear on the test server: Like the pre-TBC quest fish, they are now caught alongside an existing catch - so you get 2 fish at once. At this stage it is still possible I'm just very lucky, but every quest fish has also been caught from the very first catch.
I documented what I've discovered so far about the new pool names in the Wrath section. The patterns seem to reflect the type of trunk found - most obvious in Stranglethorn Vale, which always had two different wreckage pool types, depending on whether you were north or south of Grom'Gol.
"Lesser", "Sparse", no prefix, "Abundant", and "Teeming" imply more fish per pool, or a better catch in some way. But an initial test did not show up any differences. It seemed like the pools had simply been renamed, pending a future change. I've not rechecked them in the last week.
I'm also intrigued to know whether you find the random oily swoosh noise that has been added to Oily Blackmouth and Brackish Mixed pools as confusing as I did?
Stephenn, August 2008:
As of the most recent patch one of two things have happened regarding the "You've Been Barlowed" Achievement.
1) The objectives are now retroactive. I got credit for doing all 5 of the daily quests, without doing them all on the beta server. I haven't had a chance to do "The One that Got Away," yet. But I had done it many times on the regular server before the character copy.
2) It's glitched now and improperly gave me credit. Similar to the "Reach Level 80" achievement that I have credit for when I'm only 72.
GIGAR, August 2008:
Well... That's why they call it a beta :P
But the lvl72 bug is just hillarious, lol!Anglin Man, August 2008:
Interesting. In the beta, I got the Barloed achievement right away, but still waiting for the STV achievement to be unlocked. i'm sure it will be updated. I also hope that we can get some sort of achievement for both grand prizes. Since they are essentially quest rewards, it shouldn't be that hard to track.
I've had very little luck finding fish in North Rend so far, but mostly because I get caught up in exploring and new quests. I always think of it just after I log off. Has anyone been able to get to Dalaran, and see if fishing is possible there?
el, August 2008:
I don't think the retrospective achievements are consistent. My second version of El (that hasn't completed daily fishing quests since transfer) still doesn't have Barloed.
There are a few other bugged achievements that appeared at the same time as level 80, such as multiple exalted reputation gains. Let's hope it all gets worked out by the time it goes live.
Dalaran certainly contains fish!
Pipre, September 2008:
There are a ton of achievements that are not working retroactively that should quite obviously.:
-The fishing diplomat: I'm alliance, and I have Old Crafty, yet did not recieve credit for having fished in Ogrimmar.
-One that didn't get away: I have Old Crafty and Old Ironjaw in my inventory yet have not recieved the achievement.
-Old Man Barlowned: Can't count the number of times I've done these quests (and haven't gotten the hat, 2 ring, or croc pet), no achievement.
-Deadliest Catch: Fished up Gahz'ranka countless times as well. Have Nat Pagle's Fish Terminator equipped. No achievement.
-Lurker Above: Have the Mallet of the Tides, fished him up many times, no achievement. The following I have completed, have not recieved the achievement, but are quite easy:
-The Old Gnome and the Sea
-The Scavenger
-25 Fish to whatever the highest is. I probably got this achievement pre-BC. Spent countless hours in Azshara.http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=9336628596&postId=93356715498&sid=2000#4
el, September 2008:
They have not tracked fish catches historically, so all retrospective awards are based on Bind on Pickup items and quests - and there are very few of these for fishing. And it seems everything you did in beta was reset at the last build (Friday night).
The obvious one that Tigole responded to, was the Magical Crawdad not registering the "One That Didn't Get Away" (since the Magical Crawdad means you must have caught Mr. Pinchy). I think the only other 2 fish that could be added there are Old Crafty and Old Ironjaw, which and BoP. All the others can be traded, so having them doesn't prove you caught them.
I also agree that cross-faction Crafty/Ironjaw should count (for The Fishing Diplomat), although unfortunately not for Horde, because Ironjaw can be caught in Ironforge.
If the Deadliest Catch and Lurker Above are for fishing up the boss, then drops from that boss are not relevant, because anyone in the raid could have got them, without knowing how to fish.
Old Man Barlowned wasn't consistent before, and I guess depends on how detailed their daily quest tracking is. I assume the game doesn't need to know you have completed dailies before, as it does regular quests.
The fish catches could be calculated fairly easily from your skill level. Anglers with 375 skill have clearly caught a lot of fish. But I understand why they might want to start that fresh, since the skill level is only a rough approximation, not an accurate number.
But then beta El doesn't appear to have any achievements at the moment, so I'm not able to comment on specifics - it's all broken...
Pipre, September 2008:
I completely agree El. The question with the bosses is one I'm interested in. Since Gahz'ranka is only a lvl 63 pretty much any class should be able to go into ZG, fish, and kill him. So that one isn't too big of an issue. Lurker, on the other hand is not such an easy fight. He has tons of health, and even getting to him is quite difficult, if not impossible without clearing all the trash in the intance. In other words you're going to need a party or raid to get you to the boss, and it's a lot of work for an achievement. A lot of work those of us who have already fished him up have done WAY too many times to want to force some friends to go back and do.
I'll do it though. If I have to! Salty Petre must exist!
What's left after Salty?
Triseult, December 2008:
So I've been grinding at all the Fishing Achievements for quite some time... I'm down to getting 4 Gold Coins, and finally beating the STV content (haven't done it yet, but I have high hopes for Sunday.)
Next, of course, is getting my own Giant Rat. This will be my last Fishing Achievement.
My question is, then... What's left after that?
What other cool thing can I do with Fishing? I don't really feel like, say, fishing all the rare fish in One that Didn't Get Away... I'm wondering if there are pets I could find that I've somehow skipped.
Any suggestions? By the way, I don't have the crocolisk pets yet, but I keep doing the daily anyway as I have yet to get the darn hat.
Chasidim, December 2008:
there are no other achievements to get. once you have all, there is nothing new, nothing secret.
i got the title on november 15. and had only the giant sewer rat left. i got this last of the fishing achievements on december 2nd.
unfortunately there is no achievement like "catch 10.000 fish" or "catch all the rare spawns" or something like that.
the only thing you can do is enjoy your title, play with your titanium seal and travel northrend knowing you achieved the best title ingame ;)Balazar, December 2008:
The main thing to do is relax and fish recreationally..
el, December 2008:
You could try and find Drostan's Fishing Chair... Although I suspect if that was possible to catch, someone would have posted about it by now.
Pipre, December 2008:
It's funny you mention this. My new Death Knight main "Pipre" is the server (world?) first Salty DK, after spending a week farming for the Dark Herring in Grizzly Hills I got sick of it and went to Elwynn Forest where the 15 pound mud snapper dropped on my 15th cast! Salty Pipre ftw! Back to fishing for fun and money again!
GormanGhaste, December 2008:
Fish for profit--the gold for that traveler's mount isn't going to just fall in our laps :)
el, December 2008:
The spell to summon Drostan's Fishing Chair could be found in WotLK's spell list. Drostan is in Sholazar Basin, but says nothing about fishing. We know that some items, such as the Fish Feast, are found in the data files, but not in the game. So the fishing chair may have planned, but removed. Or planned and not yet implemented. But I rather like the idea that the item is lurking somewhere...
Famos, December 2008:
thats what keeps me fishing past "salty" ... the unknown...
what if i fish up something so crazy and new, no one has ever heard of it before. even though im sure it doesnt matter (because all waters for any given area are the same) but i travel to way out of the way places to fish... just in the off chance "it does matter". and if my bobber is in the right spot at the right time... BAM! something legendary!!! :)
Bijoou, December 2008:
Yeah I fish for fun and profit now. What I don't cook I sell for quite a bit of gold.
stirfry, December 2008:
I got my Salty title within the first few days of Wrath coming out. I have every fishing pet except Chuck (which I'm working on), and all the best fishing gear except for a dezian queenfish line for my new arcanite rod. How often do I fish now? Just about every time I log on. Fishing in game relaxes me, even without the promise of a reward. The rewards - visual badges that identify my love of fishing - are a source of pride, but secondary. The simple act of fishing, which is boring to many, is utterly satisfying to me in and of itself. You drop a line, you wait, you get a surprise.
If you need money, I recommend farming eternals.
brigand, December 2008:
If you fish another rare fish from "The One That Didn't Get Away," does it show up in your achievement?
Marlburo, December 2008:
Well one crazy thing I've been doing for about the past year or so is compiling a Raw Fish Museum and Item Museum. Every single raw fish + all but four of the "pound" fish will fit in one gbank tab. I get a full stack of each because I'm a mad man, but just 1 of each looks cool too. The items are getting more tricky. I THOUGHT I could have all fishable items (excluding things that you can get elsewhere like gear, coal, etc.), all the copper and silver coins, and the 16 fishing daily items on 1 gbank tab. HOWEVA, el you are missing some things you can fish up (in dalaran especially) on your otherwise VERY comprehensive fish list on the site. "Partially eaten Fish" "Partially Rusted File" "Drowned Rat" are the ones I've fished up thus far; so, another tab might have to be dedicated to a museum. It's still pretty fun and takes longer then you might think! Not to mention how cool it looks in our gbank :-)
Norrinir, December 2008:
I'd really like to see it. Could you do little favour for me and show some screenshots of it? :)
Marlburo, December 2008:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg0cv4AODG4
Not as clear as I would like it....but I'm just figuring out this whole video on wow thing!
Norrinir, December 2008:
I'm speechless. That's just amazing, thanks for sharing. :)
What Counts as a Fish?
el, October 2008:
The fishing archievements require catching a certain number of fish. Unfortunately, not everything you catch is counted as "a fish": The achievement does not count "other items".
It is becoming clear that some things we thought were fish are not fish. I think it would be helpful if we could gather information about what is counted as a fish, and what is not. So if you watch your catches carefully, please use this thread to post what you find is counted as a fish and what is not counted as a fish. Hopefully we will quickly see a pattern, without having to "test" every catch.
Jolt, October 2008:
Like I mentioned in another post, isome of my fish counts disappear after logging.
I noticed the bug one time while I was tracking my 500 fish achievement. I had 450 fish. Logged Off. When I logged back on I was at 365. I opened a ticket.
Fished it back up to 450. Logged off, and it had dropped to 375. For fun, logged off, and logged on quickly. And the count dropped by one to 374?
Bloated Barbed Gill Trout do not count as fish for me by the way. Guess Hungry Trout are not fish. :-P
Kahless, October 2008:
I can tell you from Fishing in the Bay of Storms
These Do Not add to my Fish Caught
Winter Squid
Stonescale Eeel
Large Raw Mightfish
Bigmouth ClamThe only fish there that will count are Darkclaw Lobster and Raw Spotted Yellowtail
Zahana, October 2008:
After doing the Extrazaganze yesterday, despite my 30+ catches (the fun of a pvp server) I had a grand total of 2 catches. Is it a bug, or do fish caught in pools not count towards the total number of fish caught?
Augos-RH, October 2008:
Unless it was bugged last night, Felblood Snappers do not add to your "caught" count
Jolt, October 2008:
Like Zahana said, Basically everything you catch during the fishing derby does not count as a fish
Tasty Fish, Eels, Firefin Snappers, Oily Blackmouths, and of course the lovely Kelp that gets fished up instead of tastyfish.
Deathxtreme, October 2008:
From my experience yesterday, I would like to say that I think the "Fish Counter" is quite buggy in that sometimes it works, other times it does not.
For example, this past weekend I was fishing in Azshara trying to complete "The One that didn't get away" (as awful as that achievement is). When I decided to take a break, my fish counter had gone from 500 to 590 catches. Later that night, when I logged back in and went to Dun Morogh instead (since I think the 15 lb Mud Snapper may be easier to catch - at least I CAUGHT several 10 & 12 lb Mud Snappers unlike my time in Azshara where I caught only 1 9 lb Lobster), my fish counter said I only had 500 catches! Furthermore, after catching several fish there (Raw Brilliant Smallfish & Raw Longjaw Mud Snappers mainly), my fish counter didn't move at all. After getting booted from the server (probably because I then went to go make dinner and didn't log out), I continued to fish in Dun Morogh and the same fish started to register on the fish counter.
Lesson from this Post: The Fishing Counter is buggy so make sure you're getting some fish that register before you rule them off as not counting as a fish.
(Besides, we'll all need to catch a zillion things in Dalaran anyways to achieve several achievements on the way to the "Salty" Title so an inaccurate fish counter here or there isn't really a big deal as long as they get it to work sometime.)
Axal, October 2008:
Deviate fish also are not counting towards fish caught ...
Vanyalosswen, October 2008:
Sickly looking fish caught from Tirisfal Glades also do not count as fish.
In addition, in order to have a fish count you need to properly loot it and put it into your inventory. "Catching and releasing" will give you skillups but it won't trigger the fish counter.
Tigole, October 2008:

Unfortunately, this leaves out a lot of fish.
In patch 3.0.3 *anything* that is caught via the fishing profession will count towards the criteria. In patch 3.1.0 the wording on the achievement gets changed to "Fish up 25 items" rather than "Catch 25 fish".
Hope this clears things up.

The way this is currently working on the live realms is that it counts as a fish if it falls under the "Trade Good" category with a "Meat" sub-category. Unfortunately, this leaves out a lot of fish.

Hope this clears things up.Currently the achievements summary shows a count of all items caught, not just fish. I wonder if this will be set as the count toward achievement progress?

Achievements and/or Feats of Strength Past 1000 Fish
Lyps, July 2009:
It seems kind of silly that there are no achievements and/or feats of strength past the 1000 fish mark. It will likely take mostly people 10k+ casts to get all the current fishing achievements, and even then some people just like to fish for fun and/or money.
Most other achievements that track your progress on an unending count (i.e. honorable kills) max out at much higher levels (100k kills), and it's really cool to still have something to aim for once you've completed all the other achievements related to a specific skill or subarea of the game.
It just seems that 1000 fish is such a silly mark, and since they track your fish caught in the statistics tab anyway, why not implement achievements at the 5k, 10k, 25k, and maybe even 100k mark? Surely some people will hit those numbers over time, so why not give them some recognition for doing so?
Hopefully Blizz is planning to do this already and just hasn't prioritized it since not many people are over the 10k mark yet anyway.
What do you guys think? How many fish (and other things) have you caught so far?
Me, I'm only at the 6k mark, but I still have a couple rare fish to catch and just haven't had the time to sit down and grind them out.
Hey El, how about a poll that asks people which of the above marks they've reached (1k, 5k, 10k, 25k, etc)? I'd be curious to know where most other anglers stand at this point.

Im at ~12k catches, I think this would be a good idea, the only fishing achivment I have to look for is the turtle, and it loves to taunt me...3 guild members have got it on there 1st cast
nonameform, July 2009:
Last time I checked I had 10k+ fishes/15k+ items. 100k fishes achievement seems OK for me, though it will take more time to get than 100k HK in my opinion.

Interesting topic.
I've never seen Blizzard justify this, but my guess is that the fish-catch achievements are supposed to be easy: 25...50...100 fish are the "entry-level" achievements that get you started. Something anyone can get fairly quickly. Once you've caught 1,000 fish, you're ready to try some of the more specialist fishing achievements.
Beyond that, however high the bar is set, someone will want to reach it and go higher. 10,000 leads to 100,000, leads to a million, leads to... And when you started, 1,000 might have seemed a lot. It's Tuskarrmageddon!
There are a few of questions that arise:
- Is catching a lot of fish an achievement to be proud of, or are others worth more to you? What? why? I know some people set their own goals, like Marlburo catching every fish in the sea.
- Must it be possible to complete all the achievements - Zoltan's approach? Or can individual achievements scale up towards infinity - for example, every time you reach a new catch achievement, a new aim appears 2 or 10 times higher?
- Ethically, what's reasonable? How many marriages or childhoods would a million-catch achievement destroy? [I originally wrote billion, but that would take more than a lifetime to complete.]
Lyps, July 2009:
All valid points El, and I am sure they are exactly what Blizz considers when discussing new achievements.
The main reason I feel like there is room to expand with the X Fish Caught achievements is because of how silly the 1k cap is in comparison to the 100k HKs cap.
There definitely needs to be a limit as to how high the achievements go, for exactly the reasons you outlined, but I'm not convinced 1k is the right cap.
Perhaps though, given the fact that 1k is built into the Salty meta-achievement, larger milestones should be feats of strength. It would also remove the issue of enticing people to chase them since feats are visible on your list of achievements you haven't completed yet and would only be nice little reminders that you have achieved a whole new level of fishing craziness.

That Tuskarrmageddon thing is hilarious, by the way. I hadn't heard of that before. I'm guessing it never made it out of beta, lol.

First of all Blizzard needs to correct those fish achievements that are already in the game, if 1000 by they standards is the cap. I have been leveling fishing on my alt and catching all the junk in the Undercity. All those junk catches did count for fish achievements, which doesn't make much sense, as Blizzard has the way to tell if item was a fish or not (check your statistics for secondary professions). By the time I get 1000 fish achievement, I won't be even at 450 skill, so I don't see how exactly 1000 is the cap.
I believe that several months ago Blizzard said that they're going to add some new achievements for professions (at least for main professions). Hope they will find time to add something interesting for secondary professions too. I want all those fishes that got away actually caught. Make it a feat of strength, as it's too much to ask from anyone to actually achieve, but at least make it trackable and I will be happy.

I think 10k as the top achievement is much more reasonable than 1k. I did over 1k catches just fishing up my sewer rat.
