Catching Darkwood Fishing Pole
- Notes: Precise zones are not yet all confirmed. If you have caught it elsewhere, please let us know.
- Commentary: For years the Darkwood Fishing Pole was little more than a legend. A less exciting fishing legend than the Ashbringer, perhaps, but still a fishing legend. Reported to be carried by certain creatures - Nightbane Worgen in Duskwood or Bloodsnout Worgs in Silverpine Forest - it was almost never found. Now it is possible to catch the Darkwood Fishing Pole by fishing. The pole is still very rare. If your level is above 35, consider searching for the +20 Big Iron Fishing Pole or completing the quest for Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole.
- History: 2.4: First caught.

Darkwood Fishing Pole sighting?
Gummo, February 2008:
This wowhead entry has someone claiming they got one from the daily cooking quest in the Barrel of Fish reward...
el, February 2008:
Indeed. Yet nobody has been able to confirm that comment, even though the quest has been completed tens of thousands of times each day for the last 3 months... Strange, huh?
I'm inclined to believe some of the comments that it drops in certain level 10-20 zones, because a couple of people have told me that over the years... But then, those zones are continually being run through by alts, yet none of the main database sites have drop statistics for it. And nobody has ever been able to provide a screen-shot of the pole dropping. Strange, huh?
One theory is that the Darkwood Fishing Pole is coded as random junk, but with an almost infinitely low chance of a drop. For example, intended to be a 1/1000 drop, but actually coded as 1/1000 * 1/1000.
(I think 1/1000 is the worst possible drop chance that should exist within the game for any item. Partly because that fits with the theory that drops are randomised using the server's millisecond time value at mob creation... I digress.)
mdsmith2483, March 2008:
I am not an avid fisherman, but i was looking up some information and noticed the comment about the Darkwood Fishing Pole. I didn't realize it was so rare or I would've taken a screen shot but I can prove I have one if need be. I fished it up in the lake right by Tarren Mill.
Gummo, March 2008:
Can you post your character's armory link and log out wielding the pole for a few days? That would be the best proof, as screenshots can be faked.
Trokair, March 2008:
mdsmith2483,
I think I speak for all of us when I say *please pretty please post up a screenshot of this item in your inventory*.
Even a link to a screenshot will work. I forsee a lot of people hanging out at Tarren Mill if what you say is truth...

Here ya go. I also saw another post from someone on wowhead from a couple days ago about finding it in the lake outside tarren mill as well.
Gummo, March 2008:
Thanks! Great to see the mystery finally cleared up. I wonder if the 2.4 patch changed the drop rate; El has previously theorized that the pole's extremely low drop rate was unintentional. Some items were silently changed in the patch -- combat dragonlings changed from a 1 hour cooldown to 20 minutes, for example.
mdsmith2483, March 2008:
Its hard to say based on my find whether it was ultimately lucky or the result of changes in the patch. I haven't fished on this toon in over a year. I just decided to level it up a bit. I got the pole on my second cast at 100 fishing and a nightcrawler lure. Just happened upon this site looking for suggestions for the fastest way to level fishing and saw the lack of information about the pole. Good luck to those of you who try and fish it up.
Balazar, March 2008:
Thanks much for the contribution of information - it's very helpful!
el, March 2008:
Indeed. Thanks for posting. I wonder whether the pole is unique to that location, or common to the whole zone or other zones...
Since profiles change, here's a screenshot.
Kahless, April 2008:
Wow. It actually exists!? It's not April 1st yet. ;)
It must be a 2.4 change. After all this time I was sure it was a development item that was left out of the game but left in the database.
I assumed past claims of people getting it were hoaxes or mistakes.I'm off to Hillsbrad to fish for it.
I assume you mean the pond just south of Tarren Mill before the road?Hmm, I don't remember seeing Sagefish schools in this pond before.
Can you clarify whether you got it from a school or from plain water?
Did you reel it in with another fish? In place of a fish or in a trunk?mdsmith2483, April 2008:
I was fishing from the boat in the center of the lake. From plain water. It was a catch by itself. First cast was a fish, second was the pole. (I guess specifying the boat confirms which lake by TM it is.)
Calabar, April 2008:
Is this a white item just like the Big Iron Fish Pole? If so it would be worth trying for as I could pass it to each alt as they reached the minimum requirements. This pole requires level 15 and 50 fishing skill. The BIFP requires level 25 and 100 fishing skill. So it would be useful for the ten levels and 50 fishing skill gap between the two poles.
Gummo, April 2008:
Yes, it's a white pole, so you can sell it or pass it on to alt. If it's still a very rare pole, Krosa/mdsmith2483 could probably sell it for a ridiculous amount of money.
maloki, April 2008:
I actually came accross this piece of Fishing Pole yesterday. It took my breath away when I saw it drop, while fishing ofc. I was in Stonetalon Mountains fishing a wreckage off the Goblin place.

el, April 2008:
So far I've read reports that the Darkwood Pole can be caught from inland open water in Ashenvale, Hillsbrad Foothills and Stonetalon Mountains. Logically that means it should also be caught in inland open water in Duskwood, Redridge Mountains and Wetlands (which share the same skill requirement and catches). Anyone else had any luck catching it?
Calabar, April 2008:
Ive spent several hours leveling my fishing in the pond next to Tarren Mill after reading this thread. Ive been fishing the pools when they appear and the regular water when theyre absent. Thus far no luck.
I did see a darkwood pole for sale in the AH on the alliance side of Blackhand. It was bid only at about 50s when I first saw it. I wasnt on line when it sold. The last bid I saw was 20 gold. If there was a bidding war it most likely went for much more.
Though I would very much like to have the pole, Im not going to pay a lot for it. Theres only a ten level gap when it would be useful for a character. I can use a strong fishing pole until I can use the big iron fishing pole for any of my up and coming fishers. I have several BIFPs floating around on various bank alts. On the other hand, if I need to raise my fishing skill I may as well do so in an area where I might loot a darkwood pole of my very own.
Ramini, April 2008:
Only inland reported so far?
Wouldn't mind leveling my fishing in one of the places on my alt, shame the fish suck so much at inland places compared to coastal. Would like the rod though so I'll give it a go.Ramini, April 2008:
Well, a few hours of fishing later and I'm 225 fishing so capped my alt.
Redridge:
Fishing off the docks at lakeshire:
200 Fish Caught
-Bristle Whisker Catfish: 135 (67.5%)
-Longjaw Mud Snapper:61 (40.7%)
Fishing Buddy ScreenshotFishing at the Stonewatch Falls in the east:
150 Fish Caught
-Bristle Whisker Catfish: 86 (57.3%)
-Longjaw Mud Snapper:65 (32.5%)
-17 Pound Catfish: 1 (0.7%)
-Healing Potion: 1 (0.7%)
-19 Pound Catfish: 1 (0.7%)
Fishing Buddy ScreenshotNo sign of the pole but probably due to unluckiness. However since I only caught random stuff in the small pool perhaps only small bodies of water can have the armour fished up? I've only ever found armour in small lakes before and that lake near tarren mill is one. Going to try there as soon as I can level fishing again.
Calabar, April 2008:
I wonder if the darkwood pole can be fished up from the Sludge Fen in the Barrens. I used to fish there from time to time trying to fish up a broken wine bottle (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=6651;source=live). If so that might motivate me to level up fishing on all my alts. But from the zones El listed the Barrens might be too low level.
Rare fishing poles
Daimoth, September 2010:
As an undead, I've been trying for the Bone Fishing Pole since I discovered it. Got it today. Didn't think I'd shelf my epic pole until sometime in Cata but... A zombie fishing with a pole made out of bones? Fishing doesn't get much more awesome than that.
Or for that matter, how many of you managed to get that incredibly rare Darkwood pole from lvl ~20 waters? Or any of the other few rare poles out there?
\m/

\m/Congrats! The only rare pole I've gotten is the Jeweled Fishing Pole. I have it on four characters.

\m/Sadly, by the time I realised I was a fisherperson, I'd already gotten rid of my "Blump Family Fishing Pole" - I must put in a ticket to see if there's any way to get it back.
But, luckily, I do have Seth's, Nat's, the Big Iron, and very very luckily, a Darkwood I caught in the bank. The only one I know I'm missing is the Jewelled Pole - here's hoping for luck!
Grats on the Bone Pole, BTW - it's my pole of choice at the moment (Human, not Undead though - it'd be super awesome on an Undead!)
Xellros, September 2010:
I've got em all sept the dark wood. I don't normally use anything but my Kalu'ak or Arcanite Fishing pole though O.o
Lilitheen, September 2010:
There's 3 I don't have...yet.
The Blump Family (never will either)
The one from winning the Stranglethorn derby
The Bone Pole...(like an idiot I had this one...but sold it in a moment of stupid desperation)I also sold the Jeweled pole...but have since reaquired it so my hopes are high for the Bone Pole.

Darkwood fishing pole and the shattering.
jdom418, December 2010:
Hey guys, I would just like to tell you that after 3 grueling days and 1783 fish later, I can confirm that the Darkwood fishing pole still drops after 4.0.3a! I fished it up in Everstill lake, on a rocky outcrop away from Lakeshire in Redridge Mountains.
It's a beautiful pole, and I was happy I was able to grab it still.
Heres a SS of proof:

Sorry, forgot to show proof that it was post 4.0.3a...I guess you can see that I am wearing a gilneas tabard.
Snafu, December 2010:
Excellent! Thanks for sharing that.
Naee, December 2010:
Congrats on the pole!! I'm glad to hear that it's still available. It's one of the few fishing related items that I still haven't been able to get, along with the 5 ring and and my last croc.
Xoss, December 2010:
Fished two of them (and counting) while fishing for bloated catfish inland Wetlands (Sundown Marsh). Dec 4th and 5th 2010, patch 4.0.3a (post-shattering, pre-cata)

Dunno if that's helpful or not >.< since they are already listed in the drops for these zones, but if anyone had any doubts, there it is ^__^
Druidmoon, December 2010:
FWIW I also obtained a Big Iron Fishing Pole yesterday so there are still in the game post 4.0.3a.
Darkwood Fishing Pole
Eirean, March 2011:
Just fished up the coveted Darkwood Pole after 763 casts in the lake surrounding Astranaar, so if anyone's worried it was removed with the Cataclysm it's still here with the same insanely low drop rate but at least it's here.
