Feralis Loot Table
theodice, February 2009:
I've recently rerolled on the Borean Tundra server... a new server closed to transfers for 3 months. The gates to AQ are closed and the war effort is on. I've been eagerly fishing spotted yellowtail for war effort turn-ins. My favorite place to fish for them has been in Feralis, since I can fly to shadowprey village and safely get to the dock to feathermoon at level 25 to fish for them with 225 fishing plus the 75 lure.
I've noticed something very quirky fishing on that dock. If I'm fishing close to shore, where the water is a lighter color I catch plenty of clams and winter squid... if I go further down the dock where the water is a darker color I don't catch any clams or winter squid, but I catch more mightfish. The loot table here on the website only shows one loot table for coastal fishing in feralis. I was wondering if anyone knew what the differences in spotted yellowtail catch % is between the two ocean water types there. Thanks!
Azaguth, February 2009:
I also have noticed a difference in the loot table in a few different zones between light and dark coastal water. The function of the color of the water is to indicate the depth of the water, and, naturally, deeper (darker) water yields different fish than shallow (lighter) water.
el, February 2009:
As far as I am aware, the catch is determined based on the name of the water in which the bobber lands. I've never found any conclusive evidence regarding the color of the water (except where it is named differently).
There are quirks between the coastal waters and the ocean waters, although normally Azeroth's oceans mirror the zone you are closest to, so the ocean is the same as the coast.
The most obvious factor that would explain what you are seeing is time of day. This analysis of variation by time of day was mostly done at Feathermoon Stronghold.
You can also see from that analysis that there is quite a lot of variation within whole hours of fishing - particularly for fish that are only about 10% of the catch.
theodice, February 2009:
For what it's worth I discovered this mostly by accident during a 4hr fishing session. All of my fishing took place between 5PM and 9PM server time (6-10 eastern) so I'm not sure if the timer would have been a factor. I fished the nodes around the dock, then started fishing on the dock fishing the "shallow water"... about 400 casts and the squid/mightfish seemed on par with the loot table. After the nodes respawned I fished the nodes, then came back to the dock, but this time further along the dock away from shore. In made about 200 casts in the deeper water without a single clam or squid. I then moved closer to shore and began to catch clams and squid again.
52 Pound Redgill in Verdantis River in Feralas?
Astrelle, March 2009:
So I've reached this gap for cooking/fishing that from 265-305 I'm not really fishing with an objective in mind. My hunter is only 40 and I've grinded my cooking up with 295 (my cooking was ahead of my fishing because I discovered this place recently and I was cooking cooking, not fishing and cooking. So fishing Redgill, Nightfin, and Sunscale have put me over the top by greying them out.) I can't go into the zones I need yet for the fish to get cooking to 300 so I'll just achievement fish for now.
Is fishing on the horde bridge into Verdantis River a viable option for getting the 52 Pound Redgill?
ChefTrotline, March 2009:
I can't tell you whether the 52 lb Redgill can be caught in the Verdantis river, but I can tell you where to find fish in Feralas that'll get your cooking up to 300. In Lake Jademir, in extreme northern Feralas, there are Whitescale Salmon, and the recipe for Baked Salmon is sold by a vendor in Camp Mojache. The lake has some fearsome guardians, however. I'd recommend you swim up the river into the lake from the south, and look for a spot on the bank farthest from the patrolling dragonkin. There's a huge tree on the western side of the lake, and a protected beach on the water side of it, that I like.
The Whitescales comprise nearly 40% of the catch, there, and you'll quickly get enough to make 300. You'll also need to take the best lures you can get, as the skill requirement to fish there is quite high. I've had quite a bit of success putting the recipe and the fish in the auction house at the same time, by the way. :)
Good luck!

Astrelle, March 2009:
Unfortunately even with a lure I can't fish there, well I can.. but in a 10 minute buff I only caught 2 fish. I'll come back though when I've leveled.
So far in the river I've caught a bunch of 37 Pound Redgills and one 45 Pound Redgill. So I want to make sure I'm on the right track. :)
Marlburo, November 2010:
caught a lot of armor and patterns, but never a gem. looks like low level gems (I caught an aquamarine) can be caught now....VERY low drop rate (less than 1%)
