Howling Fjord
- Open Water Skill: 475 to fish open water without junk (pools can be fished effectively with skill 1).
- Notes: Most land in the Howling Fjord is high above sea level. 5 separate lifts have been built along the cliff-face to allow travel up from sea level. A ropeway also links the west coast to the Tuskarr village of Kamagua. A "turtle boat" can be used to travel between here, Moa'ki Harbor (Dragonblight), and Kaskala (Borean Tundra). The Howling Fjord contains several large inland lakes and rivers, including the Whisper Gulch flowing west from Lake Cauldros in the center of the zone, and Caldemere Lake near the Alliance town of Fort Wildervar. Valgarde is built on the shores of Daggercap Bay - a deep a sea fjord.
- History: Wrath of the Lich King: Northrend opened.

The One That Didn't Get Away Miracle?
Cam, August 2010:
So after using this website for months, I decided to join as of a few minutes ago after what seems like a miracle just happened to me that I'd like to share with you all.
I am working on gaining my Accomplished Angler & Salty title. I only had 2 Achievements left as of about an hour or so ago. Of course, the 2 most difficult: Master Angler Of Azeroth & The One That Didn't Get Away. I decided I was going to start working on The One That Didn't Get Away today seriously after reading the strategy on here involving the Dark Herring schools. I've only ever even half-assed tried for 1 of these rare fish maybe once for an hour or so in Elwynn Forest, trying for the 15 lbs Mud Snapper. I saved in Howling Fjord's Inn earlier this morning before logging off to watch some TV for a bit while I ran some scans on my computer. I logged back in a little while ago & started fishing. I found 2 pools of Fangtooth Herring right next to each other on each side of the bridge located on the river directly North of Valgarde. I fished the 1st pool with no success & started on the 2nd, I almost crapped my pants when before the 2nd pool was even gone, I saw Green Text & Dark Herring. Then the Achievement popped up on my screen & I was absolutely dumbfounded. I just managed to catch a 1/10,000 fish in less than 10 casts!? (Not including my little sojourn in EF before)
I just had to share this unbelievable story with all of you & get your thoughts opinions on it. Am I just that rediculously lucky or what?
Al, August 2010:
I was very lucky with the herring, myself. Just got it one day when I was fishing for fun & profit. :)
Renetta, August 2010:
I sincerely believe that the Dark Herring drop rate has been significantly upped. I do pool runs now very sparingly, but even in the 100-200 casts that I can make myself do, I tend to get 1 dark herring. That means I have seen on the order of 8 Herrings since I first caught one, which was after a content patch. Before that patch I didn't see a single one on a 1000 cast run.
Or else I have insane luck getting them, when I don't really need them.

Howling Fjord - Whisper Gulch
Luiniel, December 2008:
Strangly this subzone seems to get the coastal fish, but the inland pools -- I was fishing a Fangtooth Herring pool but when I missed I got a Rockfin Grouper and a Borean Man O'War.
The coast just outside it however is marked 'Howling Fjord' so gets the coastal pools and the inland fish !
