Old Crafty still fishable in phased Orgrimmar?

  1. Gummo, January 2009:

I have no real reason to think this, but since fishing was changed in the last patch, has anyone fished up Old Crafty in Orgrimmar while it is phased? It seems to me Blizzard might've considered that an unfair advantage for Alliance players...

  2. Kamarade Molotov, January 2009:

I have about 300 cast in phased Ogrimmar with Crocolisk quest in my quest log since the patch and no Old crafty yet.

I'm about to complete the chain quest so I can complete the Elders achivement before they are gone.

  3. neocortex, January 2009:

after 3 hours and 500+ casts i gave up... but then someone told me about the Crocolisk quest trick...
10 casts later and up he came...
although this was a few weeks ago... posts 3.0 but before the hotfixes since.

  1. Vendula, January 2009:

I'm about to complete the chain quest so I can complete the Elders achivement before they are gone.

You still have time - the elders aren't going away until February 12th.

  2. Azaguth, January 2009:

There is a two day overlap between the Elders event and the Love is in the Air event. The 11th and 12th, both events will be active.

That being said, I'll be on a unit sponosored marriage retreat (US Army) from the 13th through the 16th. So I'll be trying to do all the elders before the 11th, so on the 11th and 12th I can focus on the Love achievements.

That being said, I thought about the phased Orgrimmar for old crafty, and I don't know why it'd make a difference. It took me quite a few more casts than 500 in a non-phased orgrimmar, so don't give up just yet. The quest chain only takes a couple hours to complete, and if you have all the other elders you can fish up til the 12th, run through the quest chain, and get your orgrimmar elder (and the undercity one) for the elder achievement completion.

  3. Anaxiamander, January 2009:

I suspect not, actually. I just got the quest after the patch, and fishing in phased Orgrimmar didn't even give me The Fishing Diplomat. Judging by that, I'd wager that phased Orgrimmar doesn't even count as Orgrimmar at all.

  4. heathisrael, January 2009:

Actually, fishing up ol'crafty in phased Orgrimmar did work as of mid January 2009. I was unaware of the fishing daily -ol'crafty bug until that night.

About about 6 of us in my guild all caught him the same night. One of us still had the quest where you go to Orgrimmar and he caught ol'crafty in about 7 casts...in phased Orgrimmar.

Took me about 20 casts in regular Orgrimmar.

  5. Kylkiluut, January 2009:

    Whoa!

    I am SOOO far behind...

First... 'phased' Orgr? What is that?

Second... 6 in one night, one in 20 casts to catch Ol' Crafty? I bet I have over a 1000 casts in Orgr and SW and have never caught the 'Big' one. Perhaps the quest makes it a non-rare drop? Or am I just world-class confused?

    Thanks.

    Thanks.

you're world-class behind....go get the 'Crockolisk in the City' outland daily quest. for some reason, just having the quest GREATLY increases your chances of catching Ol'Crafty (make sure you TURN AUTOLOOT OFF...you'll catch the crock every time, just don't loot it and keep casting till you get ol'Crafty. like insanely better odds. 6 of us caught him in one night...everyone in less than 30 casts.

"Phased Orgr" ...the epic quest chain in Dragonblight that ends in the cinematic...after the cinematic, you go to Ogrimar to talk to Thrall. Orgrimar is phased and there's no 'hostile' guards, or any Horde, the whole city is open to you...and there's no travel time as you use a portal from SW.

I tried the ol'crafty bug in IronForge as well...after 50 casts i gave up. never read anywhere that it works in IF...just Org for some reason.

  7. Keff, January 2009:

Can confirm that I was able to fish up Old Crafty in phased Orgrimmar today. Checked the daily in Outland before going but wasn't the crocolisk quest so figured I would just skill up anyway and try my luck.

Took about 3 hours, roughly 600 fish and a handful of the usual odds and sods before I pulled him out. Relatively lucky but nothing to suggest that the patch changed anything.

  8. Wolfang, January 2009:

Been fishing for days now in Orgrimmar...over 3000 casts. Got the 1 ring, 17lb, 19lb and 22lb catfish...no Old Crafty. I think it's broken.

  9. spam1107, January 2009:

It took me over 3000 casts over the last couple days to catch Old Crafty in phased Org, but I finally did it. I definitely started to think it was broken as I past 3000 casts but woke up this morning, fished twice, and there he was. So as of today, he is still catchable.

  10. Wolfang, February 2009:

Agreed. It took me 3950 casts but I finally got him today. I died about 20 times or so from Hordies...most were kind, but a few were really nasty.

Odds of taking that long to catch him: 1.92%

Good luck to all...hope yours is better than mine was.

  11. Tanlos, March 2009:

As of 3/28/09 (Version 3.0.9) Old Crafty is still fishable in phased Orgrimmar.

Roughly 1500 casts over 3 sessions (about twice as fast as the rat)

  12. francislam44, April 2009:

Just got it on 04/09/09 in phased Orgrimmar.

Made roughly 1000 casts without the Crocolisk daily at Valley of Spirits.

However, could not gain the The Fishing Diplomat at the same time. =(

  13. cpengel, April 2009:

You can definitely catch Crafty while phased, and get the diplomat achievement. I did both last week.

  14. Talathan, April 2009:

Ok, I've done one Dragonblight quest line that ends in a cinematic - no phased Orgrimmar. Can you recall the quest name? I tried WoWHead to see what quests start or end with Thrall - but it lists only Horde quests.

Edit: Ok, after doing more research I did find the info I needed. The quest chain for both Horde and Alliance is listed among the posts at http://www.wowhead.com/?achievement=547

I'm glad I came here before I went too much farther. I got the Veteran of the Wrathgate achievement, but I didn't finish the entire chain. I'm hoping that, like Stormwind, it doesn't need more than Fishing 1. (Ok, he CAN fish - he just hasn't. Skill's somewhere around 100)

  15. suutar, May 2009:

I tried this last night. I got the port to phased Org, watched the scripted conversation, and then before turning in the quest step I ran out to try to fish. I could cast, and the bobber would jump, but when I clicked, I got no fish and no message. I did get a skillup, though. *sigh* Oh well.

  16. Usagija, August 2009:

It DOES work. I am proof! I caught Old Crafty in 7 casts while it was phased at max fishing, no lures. My boyfriend was also there to witness because I was slightly disappointed in how easy it was. I could have just logged there. I then proceeded to do the Ragefire Chasm achievement just because I didn't want to waste the opportunity.

Strange, like francislam44 I caught it 04/09/09, maybe it was bugged? But Crocolisks in the City was not the daily for that day.

  17. foneldar, August 2009:

Since the last patch you have to complete the Battle for the Undercity quest line in order to fish in Orgrimmar.
I tried picking up the Shattrath City Crocolisk daily but it no longer works.
This was confirmed by a GM this morning.

Fishing in phased Orgrimmar?

  1. Vessanoran, April 2009:

Ok, so I got tired of getting ganked everytime I went to catch Old Crafty. I finally got around to doing the quest chain (up to: "Fate, Up Against Your Will") a couple days ago, so that I could fish worry free in phased Orgrimmar.

The first night: 750+ casts... nothin (well, a BUNCH of Mud Snapper's)

The second night: 150+ casts... MORE Mud Snapper's

The third night: 3.1 dropped... went to go try my luck... WTH? I couldnt catch anything!

Does anyone know if they changed it so you can no longer fish while on this quest?

  2. el, April 2009:

What message do you get? There are no fish here? I wouldn't be surprised if it got removed - it gave quite a big advantage, that could never be repeated once the quest was complete.

  3. Vessanoran, April 2009:

No message. Just when I clicked on my bobber nothing came up. I did this a dozen or so times just to verify. I'll be heading back soon to try again. Praying it was a glitch last night.

  1. Vessanoran, April 2009:

So I just went back to try my luck again. Now, I get the loot box when I click on the bobber... and nothing is in it... ???

  2. buMf00d, April 2009:

server lag most likely i guess, my server has been acting strange as well

  3. ashyni, April 2009:

I couldn't get this one either - it would say I caught X but there was nothing in inventory and the achievement didn't proc.

  4. Snafu, April 2009:

    This is what I'm seeing:

I'm in phased Orgimmar now, and was there yesterday as well. I was able to catch the baby croc (for the daily) with no problem, but nothing came with it. (Before the patch, it was never the only item in that catch.) After the patch, with every cast the bobber bounces and splashes as usual, but the loot box comes up and shows nothing in it. However, in the upper left hand corner of the frame of the box is the old skull and crossbones that I'm sure we've all seen before when there's nothing to loot.

    It looks deliberate to me.

  5. Vessanoran, April 2009:

Ok, third times a charm? Don't I wish! Now when I click on my bobber I don't even get a loot box. Oh well, guess I'll go back and do it the way it was intended. Happy fishing!

  6. Narinae, April 2009:

This happened to me too, exactly as it did to Vessanoran. The first time I went I got empty loot windows. On subsequent attempts nothing happened when I clicked the bobber. (Although it's possible autoloot being on at some times and not others might have been involved there.) I did get a Crocolisk when I went with that quest open, but just the Crocolisk itself...and the fishing diplomat achievement lol.

I petitioned inquiring whether this is a bug or a fix and have been notified that my petition was escalated, so I continue to cling to the hope that this might be a bug and not intentional. I'll update if I hear anything further. You may not want to drop your quest to get into Orgrimmar yet!

Edit: Ah, alas. "Upon further investigation, the behavior you reported is functioning normally and correctly." No more fishing in phased Orgrimmar.

  7. Narinae, April 2009:

Having determined that phased Orgrimmar is no help, and finding myself unable to sleep in the wee (and off-peak) hours of the night, I went to real Orgrimmar today. I went with the crocolisk quest (not yet completed) to try to confirm the reports that that's not helping either since 3.0.8 (but mostly because I was grasping at straws to try to get this fish without days of being ganked). After getting two crocolisks without Old Crafty I gave up on that helping either and looted one. 190 fish later, I got my Old Crafty. WHEW. So I can confirm the following:

Fishing in phased Orgrimmar no longer works, with the exception that you can fish up the crocolisk if you have that quest. This could still help alliance who want to get the Fishing Diplomat achievement in safety.

Fishing in regular Orgrimmar while you have the crocolisk quest active will not help you get Old Crafty. However, neither will it hurt your chances.

On to Ironforge! Look out Old Ironjaw....

  8. Gihelle, April 2009:

That's a great change tbh. I always thought of fishing in Phased Orgrimmar as of a glitch.

  9. Antonine, April 2009:

Yes, they finally removed fishing in phased Org (I believe it was announced, or at least commented on by a blue)

Hey, be happy you're with the Alliance, you actually have places to hide in our city. There is no hiding in Ironforge, and that was before they took out lava fishing.

  10. Snafu, April 2009:

I logged on here to share a conversation I had with a GM about it, only to find the news is out. ;) So I'll just confirm what everyone else is saying....fishing phased Orgimmar is gone. In answer to my question about it, the GM said "Indeed, it was changed so that players could not catch old crafty without risk of PvP interaction (which is considered to be part of the difficulty of the achievement.)"

I took a screen shot, too. It probably isn't needed to verify any of this now, but I've already done all the work. lol

    http://files.filefront.com/13626115

"Difficulty"? Some of these are beyond difficult. I quit counting casts for Ol Ironjaw at about 3,600! At least I've seen other people catch him, so I know he's real. I didn't even bother to start counting casts for Ol Crafty. And after hours of grinding away at him, I'm about ready to give up on that achievement. I don't feel bad about it...the GM gave up too.

Maybe these achievements should be listed under the "Feats of Strength" category. :p

  11. Antonine, April 2009:

Yes, it took me just under 5,000 casts to catch Old Ironjaw. Since you can't really hide in Ironforge (trust me, people will kill you just for trying the sleeping underwater trick) I learned quite a few techniques for communicating and gathering supporters from the Alliance side, none of which involved /beg or making an alt.

I find that if you're out in the open, wearing fishing gear, you're less likely to be griefed than if you're hiding and trying to be sneaky. Even the people who would kill me over and over would eventually find my persistance entertaining and then go on to protect me from others.

On a positive note, that gets rid of the Horde screaming "unfair" on yet another Alliance boost. :D

The Wrathgate and fishing in Orgrimmar.

  1. Kahless, November 2008:

I saw a hint about this mentioned somewhere but I thought I'd start a thread on it here.

So I finished the Wrathgate quest line in Dragonblight today and I'm doing the followup quest "Fate, Up Against Your Will"
This quest sends you to Orgrimmar on a diplomatic mission to speak with Warchief Thrall.

At first I though I was instanced since there are Guards but they don't attack and there are no other NPCs or players.
Turns out it's the real Orgrimmar, just "filtered" using some new mechanic that Blizz has added to the game.
Other players can't see you and you can't see them unless they are on the same quest.
NPCs that you can see are altered by the quest.

The upside is you can fish in Orgrammar as long as you like without guards or players attacking you.
I will not turn in this quest until I have caught Old Crafty.
With a little luck I may catch the really big catfish while I'm at it.

  2. el, November 2008:

I cast a line during that quest too, and I agree, fish can be caught. Same during the Battle of the Undercity (although there is no reason to). If you do manage to catch Old Crafty, please post a confirmation.

  3. Kahless, November 2008:

I was worried at first that I might not be able to catch old crafty in this way but my fear was removed when I realized it was the real Org and not an instanced copy.

I will confirm WHEN I catch him. I fully expect to.
So far the loot table looks exactly the same.

  1. Marlene, November 2008:

Once I start the wrathgate quest... I think I am going to pick up the crocalisk in the city quest or try to and then go to Orgrimmar and see if I can get both. :D

I would like to get something to display in my header here at el's Anglin'! And I have been fishing since day one. I just always fished from nods to get the fish and treasure.

    :D

Oh well. Got to start somewhere.

    Marlene

  2. Kahless, November 2008:

    Confirmed!
I finally caught him today while in Org under the quest.
Easy Fishin', No Ganking. Takes some of the fun out of it but certainly makes it alot easier.

Probably something to add to your cross faction fishing FAQ.

I left Org last night and did my dailies this morning, then I was able to return to Org by porting back from Stormwind. Just talk to Jaina Proudmoore in SW Keep and she'll port you back.

  3. pinktoque, November 2008:

ahhh so this is the quest BattleMoose was talking about in the other thread about Old Crafty. Dang, I'm Horde, so this quest won't help me catch Old Ironjaw in Ironforge :(

There wouldn't happen to be an equivalent for Horde that will let them go to IF unflagged? *wishful thinking*

  4. Kahless, November 2008:

Edit: I found the details on the Horde followup quests to the Wrathgate line.
No free trip to IF for them.

    http://www.wowhead.com/?achievement=547

  5. Faela, November 2008:

I also caught Old Crafty in the 'filtered' Orgrimmar of the Wrathgate chain yesterday.

  6. Yavanna, November 2008:

Confirmed. I caught him today - took 959 casts. I also confirmed with a GM if this was possible and legal.

Grrr! He IS crafty!

  1. Ladoran, October 2008:

Hello! So I was fishing in Orgrimmar for about 2 hours last night behind the waterfall. Got a couple green items, some leatherworking plans.... no Crafty. I was bored and about to quit so I went and stood out in the open and fished some more. Strangely enough people just kept running past, no one bothered me. 10 minutes later a little orc comes running up to me and starts to fish next to me. About 7 casts later HE catches Crafty and I see his achievment box pop up!! I /clap and /cheer for him and he /cheer back. We kept fishing for another 10 minutes before I said /bye and left. How frustrating is that!!

  2. Mitzy, October 2008:

Probably everyone who has tried catching Crafty, including me, feels your pain. Too bad on my server the hordies aren't that friendly...

  3. Warla, October 2008:

Took me 22 hours to fish crafty..
So with 2 hours you just started....

  1. Trammel, October 2008:

Took me 10 hours and close to 3000 cast to catch Old Crafty. Took wife under 400 :(

  2. becchi, October 2008:

17 and a half hours, 2344 catches, killed by hordies 10 times. One Old Crafty. Hurrah!

Orgrimmar fishing?

  1. Kessira, April 2009:

I had an interesting issue while trying to fish for Old Crafty, and I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. As an alliance player, I went to Orgrimmar, in particular the Vally of Spirits. Hiding behind the house there, I cast my line several times, and never caught anything. (Skill 260ish) The friend that went with me was just learning to fish, and she caught nothing but gray trash. No actual fish came up for either of us, but we were both getting skillups. The loot window would pop, but it'd be empty for me, or gray trash for her.

So I bugged another buddy with 450 skill, and he had the same issue I did. Loot window pops, nothing in it.

At this point, I'm scratching my head. What's going on? Now here's the really strange part.

I had a friend that plays a horde alt, so I asked him to see if he could catch fish in the same area. He gets there, and starts fishing, has no issue. Starts wandering around looking for me, and when he gets to where I'm standing....I'm not there. I can see myself on my screen, but I can't see him and he can't see me.

    Any ideas?

  2. Thalen, April 2009:

From your description, I'd guess that you weren't in the 'phased' version of Org (the one where you port there from...was it Stormwind? It's been a while...). They removed the ability to catch anything while you're in that. So just to make sure, were you all in the normal 'walk in the front door and avoid all the guards' version?

In the phased version, there are no hostile guards, and you won't see any Horde players, so there's no real risk involved, and I think that's why Blizz removed fishing from there. But if this is happening in the 'real world' mode, I'd have to think there's some kind of bug going on...

  3. Kessira, April 2009:

Yep, normal version. Not phased or anything. Played a lovely game of "Escape the Horde Guards" to get there.

I did turn in a ticket on it, we'll see what the result of that is. I'll let you know when I know.

  1. Neh, April 2009:

    Hi,
I have been fishing there for 2 weeks, finally opened a ticket. Spoke to a GM today, apparently it's bugged and ONLY horde can catch Old Crafty.

  2. Kessira, April 2009:

So what are we Alliance players supposed to do? Just suffer? Why even bother having an achievement if we can't get it? Grrrr......

I just got a note in my game mailbox that said they'd responded to my email account. I've checked several times, no email. Not real happy about that. I'll continue to post as I get more info.

Baby Crocolisk daily in other cities

  1. emma, April 2008:

A while back I read a thread here about the possibility of catching the Baby Crocolisk quest item in cities that aren't specified in the quest log (like Stormwind). I just thought I'd mention that I did 50 casts in Undercity today without getting the item (I did have the quest). It's not definitive of course, but I've never had to go more than 30 casts to get it in Orgrimmar. I'll give it another go next time it's the daily, or maybe try Thunder Bluff.

  2. Tsathoggua, June 2008:

    emma wrote:

I just thought I'd mention that I did 50 casts in Undercity today without getting the item

    http://www.elsanglin.com/forums/topic/baby-crocolisk-daily-not-restricted-to-sw#post-984
Did a 200 cast test of each Undercity and Thunder Bluff, and came up empty. Well, I did catch three "Old Teamster's Skull"s, so not exactly empty, but no crocs. Second cast in Orgrimmar, on the other hand [although I have had one 32 cast capture of the croc in Orgrimmar].

  3. Kahless, June 2008:

IIRC it was only Ironforge that was reported as also having the Croc.
Someone tried it in Darnasus and never caught one there either.

It doesn't make sense to me that Org would be the croc city for Horde. It should be Undercity.
    Orgrimmar is analogous to Ironforge.
Undercity is analogous to Stormwind and has the sewers and canals to make it believable.

  4. Tsathoggua, June 2008:

I realize that only Ironforge was reported as confirmed, however considering the usual Alliance/Horde player character ratio, I thought it to be worthwhile to see if similar was true Horde-side.

We cannot know unless we look.
