This page summarises how to catch Sea Pony.
About Sea Pony
- "...because 'seahorse fry' doesn't sound very cute at all." Binds when caught.
- Use: Teaches you how to summon this companion.
Catching Sea Pony
- Notes: Rare catch from open water around Darkmoon Island. The Sea Pony is also reported to be rarely caught from Shipwreck Debris (Darkmoon). The pet is summoned in a spout of water, and then hovers inside a translucent bubble. It cannot be mounted - not even by a gnome! Thanks Hegarol (@atlasloot).
- Commentary: It took me just over 700 casts before catching my first Sea Pony, and then about 30 to catch my second. As Milli Featherwhistle says, your mileage may vary. It may take cast several hundred times to catch this. Most of the coastline of Darkmoon Island is contested, however the Boardwalk is a sanctuary, where the factions are not at war. There are no hostile high-level creatures on the island, so the Sea Pony can be safely fished at low level. Darkmoon Island is only available during Darkmoon Faire week, which starts on the first Sunday of the month. There is no evidence that the catch rate from pools is higher, however it certaintly takes much longer to fish Shipwreck Debris (Darkmoon) than open water, because there are few pools, spread along a lenghty coastline. Unless you plan to fish the pools for the valuable items contained in Sealed Crate (Darkmoon), I recommend fishing open water for the Sea Pony.
- History: 4.3: First caught.

Sea Pony - How many casts?
NiceBloke, December 2011:
So, I settled myself down to cast the new Sea Pony in the Darkmoon Faire.
18 casts later, it drops.
Early night for me now then. Pet number 185.

el, December 2011:
I caught my second (live) Sea Pony very fast as well. Of course the first people to post always do...
GormanGhaste, December 2011:
Caught mine in 29 casts on live. Also fished up one Message in a Bottle, which contained a scroll.
el, December 2011:
There are a few reports of the Sea Pony being caught from Shipwreck Debris (Darkmoon). Any confirmations? I fished from rather a lot of those pools during testing, and never caught it, so I doubt the catch rate is higher than open water. Unfortunately the contents of those pools are quite valuable, and the total number of spawn points rather low, so it is proving hard to intensively farm Shipwreck Debris.
Robbingo, December 2011:
I think I was very unlucky with this, It took me 656 casts to get the Sea Pony, but well worth it, Love this little guy in his bubble :D
carisana, December 2011:
I can confirm that alt rogue caught the sea pony on her first cast into the Shipwreck Debris. Now for hours I've been casting into the debris with my main Warlock and nothing... open water cast count is 234 and nada so far.
carisana, December 2011:
Ah, 399 in open water was the winning number - got my Sea Pony :)
Rabb, December 2011:
I just fished up my Pony Today. it took me 17 casts. I just fished in open water no pools.
amber_missy, December 2011:
This is my first post and I can confirm I got this on my 350th cast, from a "Shipwreck Debris (Darkmoon)" where I got both a Sealed Crate and the sea pony from one cast!
I was stunned as I was only fishing the debris for the shineys in the crates!
I caught:
Open Water:
210 x Raw Rainbow Fin Albacore
90 x Oily Blackmouth
28 x Firefin Snapper
2 x small locked chest
4 waterlogged crates (I think these said they were venture co - they had 1 pile of blasting powder in each!)Debris Pools:
16 x sealed crates
1 x sea pony! :DI hope this helps - I didn't think to do a screen-print or anything - I was just so chuffed to get it as it was 1am and I still needed to hand in the fishing and cooking quests and do any of the dailys! :(
amber_missy, December 2011:
I also saw one of my guildmates get a Steelscale Crushfish while fishing there! /jealous! :P
Gwyn, December 2011:
170 casts here. I caught mine at the bottom of the ramp from the boardwalk. :)
Druegar, December 2011:
caught mine after 47 casts in open water
KaliopeLlane, December 2011:
I got this in just over 70 catches - open water right at the dock area.

1 Small Locked Chestpriestvito, December 2011:
Caught the Sea Pony on 64th cast, open water.
Also caught a Steelscale Crushfish on approx 35th cast so it is possible to complete the rare fish achievement at Darkmoon Island.
Pahonix, December 2011:
~475 casts here (can't remember the exact number since I'm at work).
I'm going to also get it on my other main, different server and hopefully it won't take me as long.
Isis, December 2011:
701 casts, 30 other people around and I finally said I will try again tomorrow.
Sea Pony Probability Hypothesis
Aestu, December 2011:
The Sea Pony, based on anecdotal evidence, seems to have much greater variation in its drop rate than most drops seen up to this time. Furthermore, there are an unusual number of anecdotes from players on this and many other sites citing extremely protracted drop rates on mains and surprisingly quick drops on alts - often serially.
Based on these anecdotes, my hypothesis is: the drop rate for the Sea Pony is scaled negatively against certain character statistics. Possible candidates that are relevant, objective, and consistent with this general pattern include:
- /played time
- Fishing skill
- Total fish caught
- Player levelHeading off the inevitable "random loot is random," I would point out it is not always that simple, and the WoW Dev Team has demonstrated an increased preference for curving over the years. Quest items, for example, used to have drop rates based on simple probability; today, the chance that most quest items will drop off applicable mobs scales directly with the number of applicable mobs previously looted. Although it is provably untrue that past results influence future performance, it is human nature to so believe, and it may well be good game design to corroborate this human attitude.
Rather than be content with what is a simple assumption, I think it most intelligent to collect data to corroborate or debunk my hypothesis.
To my knowledge, no automated tool exists to simultaneously collect and collate said data regarding character statistics and drop rates. Therefore, I can think of no better approach than for interested parties to simply post their data in this thread. From this, perhaps we can notice patterns (or the absence thereof).
Values, December 2011:
525 fishing. Roughly 550 after buffs (Had my fishing pole equipped, jeweled one).
lv85, 170 days in /played
Total fish caught around 10k.
11k achievement pointsGot it after ~240 casts. Another tidbit is I also got the rare fish (Steelscale Crushfish) around 200 casts in.
Katecia, December 2011:
525 fishing, 555 after buffs (Kalu'ak pole)
Level 85, 160 days played
4035 fish caught (5943 fish and "stuff")
10500 achievement points700 casts and I haven't seen it yet.
Enarka, December 2011:
45k fish caught
Level 85, 12 days played
1860 achievement points
525 Fishing, 615 after buffsRenetta, December 2011:
Not to spoil the hypothesis, but I think this is clearly wrong. I got the seapony on my... first cast. And yes this is my main with plenty of fishing on it.
27k fish caught
10290 achievement points
Level 85, 125 days played.
525 fishing 637 buffed.I think this is just yet another case of reporting bias. People who get it quickly on their main say nothing yet people who don't get it quickly on their main but faster on an alt, report that as odd. Hence it looks as if there is something, when in reality it's just the same old RNG doing its thing.
rameymj, January 2012:
I'm starting to believe your hypothesis. Seems the closer I get to Salty, the longer I have to work for achieves. I got "Old Ironjaw" fairly early between 500-600 casts). I'm nearing 1,000 casts for the sea Pony.
My alt with few fishing achieves got a Sea Pony in under 100 (about 53 IIRC).
Of course it just just be random luck.
----- 15 minutes later -----
Well, I just got my sea pony west of the boardwalk between 800-900 casts. Sever time was about 11:20 a.m. Fishing skill 645 (just pole + hat + hat's lure). I think the real key is to bitch on this board about how hard it is. Still need my Giant Sewer Rat. :)
Bedbug, January 2012:
7k fish caught
110 days played
Got mine off the Boardwalk on my 26th cast.Awesome! Thanks for making this site, el. It's helped me and many others so much!
stormbear, February 2012:
Got the sea pony in open water on the north tip of Darkmoon Island on my 168th cast.
Jaghine, February 2012:
Sub-L10 Rogue Banking alt. trained for fishing AT Darkmoon Faire & got Sea Pony with 52nd cast after handing in the Fishing 'monthly'... Yup; fishing skill level 52.
Random is random, end of...
darkmoon luck
HootzJnr, December 2011:
there is this special vasj'ir style cove of the eastern side of darkmoon near this wreaked ship i read about it and went there there was 50 other people i tryed fishing there and in 10 casts i got 4 of the rare fish for one that didn't get away and 3 sea ponys is this some kind of special drop rate spot
el, January 2012:
For reference, the cave is half way along the eastern coast. The entrance is in a V-shaped indentation in the sea wall (the undersea edge), close to the point at which fatigue starts, directly below a ship wreck.
I don't know if this area has a higher chance of rare catches. I caught one Sea Pony there fairly quickly, but that may just be chance. May try some more casts later.
Airowird, January 2012:
Either this is the first time I got lucky or that cave does have a higher rate,
managed to get the Sea Pony in 33 catches.Total fish caught was:
18 Rainbow Fin Albacore
9 Oily Blackmouth
9 Firefin Snapper
2 Waterlogged Crate
1 Sea PonyStatisticly not a very accuraote pool (heh - pool), but worth considering if you aren't having any luck on the boardwalk.
acadiana, January 2012:
I'm afraid Blizz nerfed this location. (74,43 when standing in cave)
Lvl 85, skill 525 (563 with buffs)
~150 casts
102 rainbow fin albacore
29 oily blackmouth
8 firefin snapper
and a few misc. (message in a bottles, waterlogged crates, small locked chest)no rares, no pony yet.
I don't know if it matters that the location is technically in the great sea?
grantz, January 2012:
Wierd.... I was fishing on the boardwalk for like 2 hours.
I swam to this location and picked it up in 2 casts. Maybe dumb luck (which I doubt since it took me like 8 months to get my sea turtle and I'm far from lucky.)
It's wierd but there may be something to this.
Valkien, January 2012:
I think it took me less than 2 trips around the island just fishing from Shipwreck Pools, which now have me hooked as I love the random goodies contained inside. Depending on the other people fishing, it may take longer to catch from the pools, but ut certainly makes up for it in profitability. I made over 1000 gold just fishing for my pony.
Dashwood, January 2012:
So, I set out, with 115 Fishing Skill with a why not attitude, and got the Sea Pony in 1 cast.
Please don't hate me. To post what others posted,Level 78, 114 Skill.
1 Cast.
Came with a Oily Blackmouth.
/played 6 days.Maybe this adds to the theory that low level'd characters get it faster? I don't know much other than I am ridiculously lucky.
Paela, January 2012:
I have 12 days played and 525 fishing, was using the Jeweled rod. I was fishing off that square floating dock with the ramp up to it. I didn't keep track of what fish I caught, but it was much less than 100 casts before I caught it. I was probably there 15-30 minutes. I don't have any of the other rare fish achievements.
I was fishing in those pools of wreckage previously, but didn't see the sea pony there out of maybe a dozen. But made a lot of money off the items in the crates. There's usually a lot of competition on the pools of wreckage, though.
Paela, January 2012:
Just to clarify the Underwater Cave thing. My coordinate thing said 75,34 on the Great Sea. Like it's been said, it's about 1/3 to 1/2 way down the East coast of the island when looking from the North, look for the 'V' in the outline of the island. You'll see an underwater shipwreck if you're diving. You start getting fatigue as you swim down, but it ends when you enter the cave.
I didn't have any special luck there, but I didn't stay for long. Lots of Rainbow Fin Albacore and Oily Blackmouth, same as everywhere else on the island. No one was there, but no one was along the east coast of the island either.
Just to mention it. Pools of Wreckage do spawn along the eastern shore. I saw two on my way up from the docks. Hardly anyone goes there, but they're really spaced out compared to the ones around the docks.
Darn. Drowned while making this post. Heh. Maybe I should have gotten to shore first. :D
