This pages summarises the fish that can be caught in Wintergrasp.
About Wintergrasp
- Recommended Level: 77-80
- Territory: Combat
- Requires: Wrath of the Lich King
Wintergrasp
- Open Water Skill: 525 to fish open water without junk. Pools can be fished effectively with skill 1.
- Notes: Combat zone, so contested even where the factions are not normally at war ((PvE realms)). Wintergrasp is unusual because there are no "trash" fish caught from open water: Everything you catch can be cooked into a valuable dish. Wintergrasp is perfect for people trying to make Fish Feast, because all 3 fish can be caught in the same location, in approximately the correct amount.
- Commentary: Fishing in Wintergrasp is dangerous! Avoid battle times (including the minutes immediately before and after a battle) to avoid most enemies. Battles occur about every 3 hours and last up to 30 minutes (check the map for details). There are several locations on the rocks, above the waterfalls on the southern edge of Wintergrasp, where an angler can stand "safely" in Dragonblight and cast into the waters of Wintergrasp. Where the factions are not normally at war ((PvE realms)) this allows fishing without becoming vulnerable to attack. Other relatively safe locations within Wintergrasp include the West Workshop graveyard, Warsong Camp flightmaster (for Horde), and arches under bridges. Sit down in shallow water, which makes you slightly harder to spot (as described in Cross-Faction Fishing).
- Quests: Dangerously Delicious requires 10 Terrorfish to be caught. 1 of 5 possible Northrend Daily Fishing Quests.
- History: 3.1: First fish caught.

'Safe' fishing spots in Wintergrasp
Gizel, April 2009:
I've been looking for several spots in WG and came with a top 5 spots for the horde:
-West Workshop Graveyard (Horde control)
-Blinked (while swimming) into iceberg (Mage only, biggest spot is under the central bridge on the northren side)
-West Workshop Graveyard (Alliance control)
-Warsong Camp (Horde control, near flightmaster)
-On the arches under the West Bridgeheraklen, April 2009:
Nice one , could you mark out some of these spots on a map?
I Avoid all wintergrasp battles so I have no clue at all how things work in that zone.
Rhan, April 2009:
I just tried the arches under the west bridge after reading this.
600 casts without anybody seeing me, let alone killing me. Definatly one of the safer spots to enjoy fishing without a pesky death knight smashing your face in.
Svet, April 2009:
Just been in there for the first time - I tried one spot in se corner - there is a glacial lake - I was ok for quite a while hidden mostly by a tree next to the falls, then some passing DK teleported my to the spirit healer.
I also fished next to the horde flightpoint - and fished safely until I left - although I have seen battles around this area before.oh - and apart from the fish feast - the fish are also great for the 425-450 grind if you want to go the small feasts route. (currently working on my 3rd chef).
ashyni, April 2009:
Fish near your flight point when your faction is NOT in control of Wintergrasp and the NPC quest givers - who have significantly more health than you do - will be around. If you run into trouble, run towards the flight point and let the NPCs beat on the opposing faction member.
anakhahawk, April 2009:
Fished at the top of the waterfall (Scholazar Basin border) for Fishing daily. Not fished the area extensively but did venture further into the zone only to be sprung by an Alliance guy hiding in the water after aggroing a mob. Needless to say I had rez sickness so he didnt benefit from my kill ;P
Azaguth, April 2009:
Anyone on a PvP server understands the fallacy of thinking they were in a "safe" fishing spot.
As an alliance character, I've been attacked while fishing for the croc in Stormwind (my pvp flag timer was still at 4 mins, had just come in the portal from shatt after accepting the quest).
Wintergrasp is just another place to fish. Fishing in Wintergrasp is slightly less troublesome (when a battle for wintergrasp is not ongoing) than fishing in Sholozar Basin or the lake in Dragonblight.
Utopia, April 2009:
Fortunately the unwritten 'If you're fishing, you're offlimits' rule seems to be working on my server for WG fishing.
I was happily standing at Glacial falls for the Terrorfish alongside 3 horde anglers the other evening, and emotes, rather than blows were exchanged.
Don't know if it helps that myself and one of the Horde were sporting the Salty title, but I /bowed and /smiled graciously when I left, pleased to have completed the daily unhindered :)
Hope it keeps up like this between our noble angling community :)sarahdon, August 2010:
Thought Id give my new spot out to others who dont want to get ganked when they are just trying to fish for the daily. Theres a waterfall at the north of icemist village. Fly to the top and land on the large slab rock. Go forward a bit (hopefully not to get flagged) you will be looking at the Eastpark Vehicle workshop. It may take a couple times to find the right spot but your bobber will sometimes be in the rock but you can still fish up when you catch something. Oh and its so nice when you hear fighting and see the Horde is winning.

I wish that were so ...
I've had a couple of characters who did fishing dailies starting from level 70 who never got ganked in WG, however lately, there have been a tag team group of belftards who camp the lake near the Alliance camp (where everyone goes for the daily). Always belfs, rogue, pally and dk. Sigh.
Al, August 2010:
After being killed numerous times fishing near the flightpath, I've always gone under the Western bridge. I sit on one of the braces under the bridge ... in my fishing attire (practically no protection since I go for the "barefoot dwarf with cheek of tan" look) and I USUALLY am left alone. I've often fished with hordish fisherpersons in peace. Only once was I ganked in that spot.
stormbear, August 2010:
I have been fishing from river ice directly next to the south wall of the East Park Vehicle Park - there is a small nook on the SE corner of the building where the wall extends below the waterline. Great little corner. It is a difficult place for opposing faction players to attack. A frontal assault is difficult because it is all water. The angle above, from the workshop is too steep for ranged weapons.
From the south side of the building, your only real problem comes from miners seeking out veins of mineral. They travel so fast, they typically pass by the time you res in.
Check it out and see what you think!
Lilitheen, August 2010:
This may have been mentioned in previous posts, I'm not sure I may have just missed the location but if you're fishing when you get the notice to que up and you decline you get teleported to a very small pond between waterfalls just above Sholazar. I've had good luck there most of the time. Don't know how long it'll last though.
Also as a Warlock I've tried another method that's a bit of a taunt probably. There's one lake where there are no water elementals so I drag out my succubus and set her to aggressive to act as a first alarm. I set my demonic teleport as far away as I can, underneath one of the floating ice sheets. Then I use a water walking potion to stand as far away from any shoreline as possible. I figure at the least an enemy will have to drop into the water to attack me and hopefully I'll have enough warning to teleport and switch back to my DPS set. I think at least doing this I might stand a chance. Obviously this is only for Locks tho.
Quigley, September 2010:
I agree on the Bridge arches and the small cliff top waterfall overlooking SB. I don't seem to be harassed at either location.
Additionally I wear a fishing outfit, hat overalls (Mechbuilders) etc so often I see Horde check me out then move on, or flit down and join in getting their daily too.
Should someone prove hostile at the Waterfall location, a couple of trap trinkets and engineer boosters help me fly off the waterfall and parachute into SB. (I like base jumping, try it off the Violet Tower over Dalaran sometime) It's nice to vault off into the horizon blasting flames in their face. :D
- Quig.
GormanGhaste, September 2010:
For those of you with map coords, 12.7, 40.4 in Dragonblight. There will sometimes be an elemental there, so not a good location for low levels.
Terrorfish - Dangerously Delicious Dalaran fishing daily
Nonzor, April 2009:
The Dangerously Delicious fishing daily is to fish up 10 Terrorfish from the waters in Wintergrasp. It took me a total of 20 casts, with the Terrorfish in the loot with other fish (just like Pygmy Suckerfish). Total loot was as follows:
* 10 Terrorfish
* 9 Musselback Sculpin
* 7 Nettlefish
* 3 Glacial Salmon
* 1 Giant Darkwater Clam = 4 Succulent Clam Meat & 1 Northsea PearlThe Terrorfish apparently gets its name because it's "So good it's scary!" (Gotta love the quotes on some items!)
Loot from the Bag of Fishing Treasures was:
* 9 gold, 81 silver, 93 copper
* 3 Elixir of Water Walking
* 2 Worthless Piece of Violet Glass ("This thing smells like booze.")Happy casting!
ashyni, April 2009:
If you're new to Wintergrasp (i.e. you don't PvP much) your best bet for reasonably safe fishing is near your flight points and the east/west workshops. Alliance rez and fly in at the Eastspark shop, and Horde on the equivalent west side. The safest time to fly in is around 30 minutes after a battle concludes and 30 minutes before the next begins, as most folks don't hang around Wintergrasp when there's not a battle imminent.
A suggestion to spread amongst fellow anglers in this PvP zone: regardless of faction, would anyone consider equipping a fishing pole and being at the water a sign of "truce" - i.e. don't needlessly gank other anglers as long as it's obvious you're fishing?
For what it's worth my personal policy is that I won't attack anyone gathering or fishing (I'm on Arathor US) unless they initiate...
Gaukator, April 2009:
It's also worth remembering that even though controlling Wintergrasp is not required for the quest, it might help a bit if you want to avoid being ganked.
Azaguth, April 2009:
Fishing, no I don't attack.
Any other resource gathering, yes.
That titanium node might better suit an alliance member...or hell, even one of my guildies.
Fishing is something everyone can do, and there is no wait on spawn (except on pools, but even then, meh).
Doesn't matter though, generally a horde fisherman (opposing faction) will stop fishing and equip his weapon as soon as he sees an ally running around...generally they'll attack first anyway, so I'll just go up next to them, sit down, cast a line and wait to switch weapons...
It's fairly uncommon for an opposing faction fisherman to not attack me.
I don't play WG very often. I do the daily once in a while when I want some honor for a specific piece of gear, but by no means do I go every day. I try to make it once a week so I can hit VoA (or whatever is there now), but that doesn't always happen either.
ashyni, April 2009:
I can understand that - though as a tailor/enchanter, the titanium or saronite node is pretty much decoration for me to look at while fishing :) so I figure why bother attacking since I can't use it. If a guildie is on who has mining, then I'd reconsider for sure. Typically, I try to fish in out of the way spots, though I find in WG right next to the workshop is a great pool and no mobs.
Vanyalosswen, April 2009:
For the *extremely* paranoid, you could always treat it like a Ironjaw/Crafty run and do all the stealth-fishing tricks: do it at 4 AM, turn off huge titles, /sleep, etc.
The daily quests and achievements associated with Wintergrasp give a lot of incentive to kill enemy players just for the sake of killing them, so players who might otherwise have ignored a harmless fisher might well be more aggressive there. Why wouldn't they be, if you're the last person they need for [Wintergrasp Ranger]? Though considering the only time I've done this daily was, in fact, at 4 AM, I can't say I've done much study on this yet.
I wonder how long it will be until I hear people yelling "Stop fishing out there, you're just giving them Tenacity!"
-Grover, April 2009:
Just so everyone knows, it is possible to fish in Wintergrasp while STANDING in Icemist village (thus not pvp flagged). It took a few to find a good spot, but if you're standing at 24.0,35.0 on the grey rock there, your cast will land inside wintergrasp almost every time!!! Easy and safe for the non-pvpers among us!
ENJOY, and happy fishing!
el, April 2009:
Interesting, Glover.
There are quite a few spots along the top of the waterfall, where you can be standing in Dragonblight, while your bobber is landing in Wintergrasp. And of course catches are based on where the bobber lands, not where you are standing. For those on PvP realms, this doesn't make much difference: You still need to be standing on the Wintergrasp plateau - you cannot fish from the lakes below Wintergrasp. But for PvE realms it removes the possibility of being attacked completely.
Perhaps, in a future patch, more of the water will suddenly freeze over?
Illuthas, April 2009:
I think this will indeed be fixed,so far I think the spot closest to the flight master is the best one,I know I wouldnt attack someone there
Antonine, April 2009:
As I learned from my week long hunt of Ironjaw, the Anglers of Azeroth tend to have an understanding of each other. As stated before, 30 minutes before/after is always a good time. I've been able to fish among the Alliance without having any trouble- after all, they don't want you to attack them either.
This varies from person to person, server to server, but I think you should be able to do your fishing without much trouble. I've always been right in the open. If you want to feel safer, use a water walking method to get out of attack range.
Strange fishing behavior - Wintergrasp
Thalen, June 2009:
Haven't had a chance to test anywhere else yet, but I noticed something odd in WG today doing the daily...
I had to stand almost IN the water for the cast to go through, if I stood even a little ways out, I got the 'didn't land in fishable water' error. I noticed a lot of people with this issue, and even standing on the little floating ice chunks didn't seem to help.
Definitely NOT something that was there last time I was in the zone.
Rangthar, June 2009:
Same for me in Howling Fjord. Have to stand in the water to get a cast off. ???
dejaa, June 2009:
This was happening to me in Borean Tundra.
el, June 2009:
Intriguing. Most confusing is that the bug is based on where you stand, not where the bobber might land.
Added: There are a few posts in Blizzard's customer service forum, so they're aware of the problem. The solution given is to stand in the water, which isn't always possible.
Al, June 2009:
Same deal here. I went to get the ghost fish daily and none of my usual fishing spots would work. I had to step into the water to get any cast to land in "fishable water."
fredje222, June 2009:
had it too, but they'll fix it soon i hope
Funkalious, June 2009:
If you can't stand in the water a water walking potion will work. I had to use one this morning for the daily.
mikado, June 2009:
I am fairly sure as of today this has been fixed. I went to do Dangerously Delicious just now and was able to stand on dry land while casting.
yossarian, June 2009:
i was trying to do the fishing daily to find the severed arm
out in the frozen sea and had the same problem...lucky for me there was a helpful person out there
who whispered to me to try moving around using a water walking potion
and i was able to complete the quest.(this was on tuesday, have not had an issue since)
gentrinity, June 2009:
Was fishing last night in the alterac mountains and have had considerable difficulty with 2 spots in particular.... "water too shallow" and "fishable water". Havent tried a water walking potion, but have tried every conceavable location to cast from :/
Fishing during wg battles
Vagg, April 2009:
Today i was fishing in wg during a battle trying to complete the terrorfish daily when a pvper sent out a message saying myself and all the other fishers needed to stop because of the numbers throwing off the tenacity buff. This got me curious, what is your approach or view of fishing during battles?
Triseult, April 2009:
Hah! That's hilarious. I've grown quite fond of the WG fishing daily, actually, because it lets me see my faction whine like little girls on the general chat. Reminds me of why I don't do BGs anymore.
Paralord, April 2009:
I do not do pvp, so I tend to not listen to the chat channel. As to the fact that people were whining about you fishing during the battle, who cares. Do what you want to do.
GormanGhaste, April 2009:
I don't fish during battles, but it's mainly to avoid the pvpers :)
donquixote235, April 2009:
The only time I fish during battles is when I am trying to do the daily with my two lvl 70 toons. Since I can't fly in Northrend with them yet, I use the WG portal that pops up before battles to go there with them.
So far I've only been ganked once, and I've done that particular daily about a dozen times or so (four characters, with it showing up three times).
I'm not a pvper either, but I don't want to screw with people who do pvp (any more than I'd want them to screw with my fishing)
Vicromano, April 2009:
I personally think its extremely RUDE to fish during a battle. It's really not that hard to help out, then fish after the battle has been completed.
Azaguth, April 2009:
Even without helping out, if your faction is outnumbered 2:1 by the opposing faction for the purpose of the battle, but you have that many more people fishing, then your faction has a big disadvantage.
If you're in the zone but not fighting during the battle, then your side is at a disadvantage.
Basically, the way the tenacity buff works is, based on the percentage more of the opposing faction, the greater the tenacity buff on the underpopulated faction. This supposedly balances the two sides, so if you have a 70% tenacity buff, that means there are 70% more of the other faction.
On the opposite side of the coin, if the two sides are EVEN as far as numbers are concerned, but your side has 20 fishermen there, then the opposing faction will have a tenacity buff when one is not really needed.
So in short, yes, it does imbalance the battle in favor of the opposing faction.
If you aren't into pvp, that's all fine and good. The battles don't last long, and there is a 2 and a half hour break between them. Try to fish between battles if you can.
As an avid fisherman AND someone who does WG at LEAST once a day (and is active otherwise in pvp as well), I can see both sides of the arguement. That being said, just play nice with your faction...
Even as a fisherman myself, I've been known to jump on bobbers of fishermen who didn't heed the call of WG and "either fight or GTFO til the battle is over".
ashyni, April 2009:
Ideally, Blizzard will patch this in a future iteration so that the tenacity buff only interacts with players who have entered combat at least once during the battle. Likewise, it would be swell if fishers who were in the zone during the battle did NOT receive a Mark unless they had entered combat at least once.
Kamaria, April 2009:
Its always amusing to see the veteran pvp views on the act of fishing in the midst of a losing battle.
