Comments about Winterspring
Below are readers' comments about "Winterspring":
more 3.3 changes
Gummo, December 2009:
Old behavior: If you did a successful cast, then tried another cast that failed (e.g. "Your cast did not land in fishable water"), your first cast still persisted.
New behavior: the second failed cast will cancel your first cast.
Loot change: Curious Crates now give up to (at least) 5 netherweave cloth or 5 fel iron ore, and (so far) up to 3 Knothide Leather. Haven't seen Knothide Leather Scraps yet.
espiru, December 2009:
My "Fingerless Gloves" with "Enchant Gloves - Fishing" (+2) now is automatically (+5)
The same in 3 charanters.

The same in 3 charanters.Mine also mysteriously upgraded. I have screen shots with an effective skill of 670.
Rod + Line + Lure + Hat + Gloves + Boots + Tuskarr + Rumsey
40 + 5 + 100 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 50 + 10 = 220This is the highest possible fishing score prior to the kuluak fishing derby.
Gummo, December 2009:
I have now caught a Curious Crate with 6 netherweave cloth. I'm pretty sure the Knothide Leather Scraps have been replaced by 1-3 Knothide Leather.
Bartiler, December 2009:
I wonder if they got rid of the +2 enchant for gloves since mine also got upped to the +5 fishing. did they just be nice and give us all with +5 since ours were already enchanted? anyone get the old +2 fishing enchant since this last patch came out?
el, December 2009:
The learnt spell still says "+2".
The strange thing about enchantments is that technically, the number is simply written into the description. For most other spells, the description references the data actually used by the game.
I don't think that is "bad coding": The enchant itself appears to be triggered by a server-side spell, so I assume that the game client simply doesn't have the data. But it might explain why an enchant formula can do something different when applied...
Thanks all the information (on this and Curious Crate).
Bartiler, December 2009:
Interesting El, never looked at it that way .
Just got back from hillsbrad farming and the +2 enchant still drops ^_^.
Gummo, December 2009:
El, a bit of a correction to your change to Curious Crates, the lower amount isn't 5, I think it's 2, and I've never gotten 6 fel iron ore, just 5. So for now, I think it's 1-3 Knothide Leather, 2-5 Fel Iron Ore, or 2-6 Netherweave Cloth. I haven't paid strict attention to lowest amounts, though.
palm, December 2009:
Just received 4 borean leather scraps from a reinforced crate today. Fished out of the river in Crystalsong Forest
smot_poker, December 2009:
I was fishing in the little lake in winterspring and caught a recipe of some sort. My bags were full at the time so auto loot didn't pick it up and I cast too fast and lost it. I managed to see the word owl on it... So i'm guessing it's a JC trinket recipe. Anyway I notice no mention of it on the site, and have fished there alot and never caught it before, so I'm guessing it's something new.
el, December 2009:
Intriguing. Recipes are unexpected because, well, they get soggy in the water! Recipes do very rarely appear in Old Azeroth's crates (at least Mithril Bound Trunk), but those aren't found in inland water (all Winterspring is inland).
el, December 2009:
I just caught Formula: Enchant Bracer - Superior Spirit from Frostfire Hot Springs. And it can still be read! Or at least could be if I was an enchanter.
At a guess, any random world drop recipe of the appropriate level could be lurking. This change probably occurs elsewhere - very likely in similar (425 skill) zones, but possibly more widely across Azeroth.
Blythe, December 2009:
Could be incredible luck, but post 3.3 I caught two Mr Pinchy's within minutes of each other. Don't want to boast, I know he's all about luck, but is it possible the drop rate has changed?
Gummo, December 2009:
It wouldn't surprise me if they upped the Mr. Pinchy rate, since it's still needed to get the Salty title. But it's hard to measure changes in low drops rates...
Nemari, January 2010:
Just another data point for a possibly increased droprate: After I read this thread, I decided to go fishing this morning. I got him on my 5th pool. In my bags are 14 furious crawdad and 6 golden darters. I was also lucky to get the pet at my first wish.
Basill, January 2010:
.. Fishing is so fun :) who knew you could catch http://www.wowhead.com/?item=2555
in Ogrimmar... yay 1200+ fish, but no Old crafty. ;(Got bored and went to fish Mr.Pinchy... after about 212 catches.. I got the crate and the pet in first wish, also noticed, the Knothide leather dont comes as scrap anymore, got about 12 crates, 4 of those contained 3-4 knothide leather
el, January 2010:
So it looks like world drop recipes are showing up in any inland Old Azeroth water, even the easier waters, like Ogrimmar.
Jon M, January 2010:
My sincere apologies if this is already known to you
I have a level 20 Alt fishing open water off the dock in North (he just took the boat from Menthil).
I have fished for about 20 min almost every day.
Skill 450 + strong pole with + 75 lure.
I get approx 1% catch of crystalized water and 1% curious crate.
The crates break down to 33% cobalt ore (3-5), 33% frostweave cloth (3-5) and 33% borean leather scraps (3-5).
No money, no greens
I have done this long enough to accumulate almost 30 cobalt ore, 12 full borean leather (5 pieces combine to make 1 full piece) and 28 frostweave.
I hope this is helpful

Lightning Eel Woe!
Detri, May 2010:
Okay, not woe... I'm exaggerating!
But even so, I'm sat here in Winterspring at 1:36pm Eu Server Time and of the 50+ fish I've caught, ZERO have been Lightning Eel.
My first thought was that I should consider PDT in America and delay my 12:00 - 18:00 fishing window by the 8 hours difference in time between CA and London... but then I dismissed that as madness.
Still... I'm fishing in theFrostfire Hot Springs in Winterspring... just north-west of Timbermaw Post.... East of Felwood.. and according to El, I should be on a 25% catch rate, or less.
But THIS much less?
If anyone has any tips, then please do pass them on.
I caught a handful of Lightning Eel last night (around 9pm server time) but maybe that was just conincience.
Thanks, fellas.
el, May 2010:
Times should be based on the realm. If you're playing on a US realm, then it'll be rather too early.
Generally times split into 4x 6-hour blocks: 1 best, 1 dead, and 2 some. The dead time for Lightning Eel is 00:00-06:00. Literally 0 catches. 06:00-12:00 and 18:00-00:00 are times when some Lightning Eel can be caught. But the highest catch rate is 12:00-18:00.
Having said that, I haven't checked this for a long time, so it may have changed. It would be helpful if you could confirm the realm time (by command /time).
Detri, May 2010:
Well, I can confirm that my realm time is working and it's indeed correct when I type /time.
I posted a message on the EU Forums, under professions, so maybe someone can shed some light on it there.
When I have time, I'll get an addon installed and take some print-screens.
Perhaps they're affected by Autumn/Spring (Spring and Fall) and it's fliped on it's head at the moment?
I'll keep you all posted.
Great site, by the way... it's a great corner of Azeroth you've got here. :)
el, May 2010:
Tested this just after (EU) midnight, and I'm not seeing any changes.
One question to you: When fishing in the afternoon, were you catching Raw Sunscale Salmon or Raw Nightfin Snapper?
Trokair, May 2010:
Could he just catch Lightning Eel faster in Deadwind Pass... or is that also subject to certain time frames?
Detri, May 2010:
I was testing at 1:13PM. That's the afternoon... just after lunch. :)
I was catching Sunscale, Whitescale and Redgill.. from memory... But specifically Sunscale, of the two you mentioned.
(Edit: I think ZA and Deadwind are both static 4% drops.)
el, May 2010:
I've confirmed that Lighning Eel can be caught in Winterspring at about 14:00. The catch rate seems quite a bit lower than 25% (perhaps 10% - needs much more testing). So maybe there has been a subtle change. Still, that would probably be better than Deadwind Pass/Zul'Aman at that time (just under 5%).
Detri, May 2010:
Okay, thanks, El! :)
I'm trying to save up some Stormchops when when I level my Shaman (just for fun in instances) so any help is much appreciated...
Now for Clefthoof genocide!
Coppernica, November 2010:
I was fishing in Deadwind Pass just after midnight server time (and local time). After about 25 casts, I got one Lightning Eel. So, the drop rate is very low, but they are dropped between 00:00 and 06:00. I'll try again during other hours and see how it compares. At least I got one Eel for the Stormchop recipe to make for the achievement. Just need 30 more for the Writ quest.

Azshara vs. Winterspring Cooking/Fishing 285-300
KenNashua, February 2009:
The fishing/cooking leveling guide seems to suggest Azshara is your best bet for getting to 300. However in my experience the drop rate is crummy. Why not instead advise people to head to Winterspring for 50%+ drop rate on Raw Whitescale Salmon for used in the Baked Salmon recipe?
el, February 2009:
Based on my records: In Azshara Bay of Storms area, Darkclaw Lobster is 45% and Large Raw Mightfish is 5%, making 50% of the catch useful for leveling cooking. In Winterspring, Raw Whitescale Salmon averages only 40%. There are variations by time in both locations, but not for those fish.
Those percentages are based on large sample sizes (over 700 catches in each area), so I'm fairly confident that Bay of Storms was the best option. I say "was", because I haven't re-checked that for several years.
But there is a very important reason for avoiding Winterspring: The tunnel! That stage of the guide needs to work from level 35. It's simply not realistic to get a level 35 character into Winterspring without a lot of help. Azshara is much more forgiving.
Pipre, February 2009:
I dunno El, running past all the Naga in Azshara at lvl 35 is still pretty daring.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the Bay of Storms has a much higher fishing requirement than Winterspring. If you're leveling both at the same time you may need to spend some time in Winterspring to get your skill up high enough to fish there. Ignoring skill requirements though, Azshara really is a great place to get those last few cooking points.
el, February 2009:
Both Azshara Bay of Storms and Winterspring require 330 to cast, 425 to stop fish getting away.
KenNashua, February 2009:
Hmmm....maybe something has changed. I swam out a ways into Bay of Storms (to make sure I was away from the coast -- locationFu did say I was in Bay of Storms), and I was getting mostly trash fish -- Yellowfin, Rockscale, Firefin, regular Mightfish, Clams. After one lure of time, I had no Darkclaw Lobster or Large Raw Mightfish. Certainly could be bad luck...
Pipre, February 2009:
Guess I should do some fact checking next time! I could have sworn the Bay of Storms was the hardest place to fish in Old Azeroth. >.<
Marlburo, February 2009:
Might I add that you can only catch a 103 Pound Mightfish/22 Pound Lobster in Azshara......couple bonus points to bay of storms in my book
Gummo, February 2009:
Azshara is pretty reasonable for a lower level who is patient enough to swim from northern Durotar along the far fatigue edge of the water to get to the bay. I've been fishing in the bay lately, and I have been getting a lot of darkclaw lobster (which sells very well).
GormanGhaste, February 2009:
I do think Winterspring should be mentioned as an option, at least--many people using the powerlevelling guide are already high level, not to mention the DKs who start out with the Everlook FP. For many higher level players, Winterspring is the faster option, considering travel time.
Winterspring Whitescale Salmon
chautauqua, May 2010:
Did I read your table and comments correctly? I interpreted the blank space for best time for fishing Whitescale in Winterspring as "there is no best time" rather than "no data".
el, May 2010:
That's correct: There is no "best time" for Whitescale Salmon.
