Or they could just make a option on the sound tab to make other fishermen's bobber silent. Would be of a real help when watching TV or playing while fishing.

I'd like my bobber to make a distinctive sound from that of everyone else's.

Is a distinctive sound worth more than a distinctive image? Or is the size of the bobber important - the fact it is so small means that sound becomes more important?
I think sound is hugely under-rated in WoW, precisely because "good sound" doesn't get noticed. It's a subtle thing that influences you without you actively being aware of it. Other people creating sound can break that: Like the train-set just before Alterac Valley starts. The only obvious example of sound being used to customize a character is Mekgineer's Chopper - the noise made by those bikes gets noticed. However, that still isn't true customization, because there is only one sound - it's just a rare sound that most characters don't have.
Traditionally it is not done in modern video games, because they use blocks of pre-recorded sound, which are difficult to manipulate (the Death Knight speech is an example of manipulation). However, games could play your computer like it were an instrument - rather than pre-recorded sounds, the computer plays a (musical) score. That opens up the possibilities for a lot more variations, because things like pitch can be altered by the program's code, rather than being pre-recorded by Blizzard. I wonder why we don't do that? Maybe sound programming requires a lot more processing power than I think it does?

Instead of making a customizable sound, they could use a different sound bite that's only client side, that only you hear when you're bobber catches something.

I got it on Brill in the record breaking time of 27 min.
Probably didn't have that much competetion on a EU server at this skewed time

Guess it took me something around 100 catches to get the shark.

Did all my fishing in the Frozen Sea.

I chose the boots.

El managed to win her first contest, which earnt me a tell "beaten by El - I can live with that" - which made me smile. Full details soonish. The quest/turn-in system is precisely the same as the Booty Bay contest. There are also now announcements.

I took just over 50 catches to win. Other people I've spoken to required at least that number. My theory is that a certain number of casts are required before there is a chance to catch the Shark. So, for example, the probability of catching is 0 until you have 40 casts. I also don't know if that would be influenced by switching pool types. Or perhaps it is based on a count of Suckerfish?

In short, it would be very useful to get information from people here about how many casts into which pools, and/or catches of what fish it took to get your Shark.

Agreed!

And I vote for faster fishing leveling. ~12 fish for a point is making me nuts! I wonder if I can get my fishing from 410 to 450 before Cataclysm arrives.

Last night's fishing brought my total fish and other things caught up ~1200 to 16766. No turtle yet. A friend gained hers after ~8K caught. I fished all pools from Dragonblight around HF to GH in the East and back again through to Coldaara. It has been a bit disappointing but during my fishing experience I have paid for my chopper and several other items and mounts through using cooking and my fishing mats, so all is not lost. It's a bit frustrating because I need 1 more mount aside from my last Tourney mount to reach the 100 mark. Not one to give up though.

Useful. There was a subtle change to skill-ups between 225 and 300 a patch or so ago: The dramatic increase close to 300 disappeared, and the whole curve became a little more gradual: It was fairly constant (about 6) from 220 to around 290, then rose to almost 10 by 300. That's roughly what you are seeing, perhaps a point higher.

How about making the +fishing gear more useful? If you have 450 fishing, there's no bonus in carrying anything more than a basic pole and the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat.

I helped a friend with this the other day, I have both Horde and Alliance. He asked 2 friends from alliance to come and I came on horde with a friend as well.
So in all, 5 people (including the person trying to win)

He won.

You don't need massive raid groups for it.
When I won this all I had 1 was person with me and yes I was on a high populated server.

Sure some people who win it wont have the other achievements for Salty, but there will be people who have do and wouldn't have gotten the Salty title had it not been for this new tourny.

This is complete and utter "QQing" on my part, so feel free to disregard.

I will never be able to win the Extravaganza, at least not with my current job (which I don't see quitting anytime soon).

I NEVER get Sundays off, and I work graveyard shift. Moreover, my job is in the direct-care field. Meaning not only does it suck to go to work with not enough sleep (as it would with any job), it is DANGEROUS. How am I supposed to explain to a patient that I accidentally injured them while attempting to treat their wounds or assist with their rehab because I was sleepy due to being awake at 2pm (which is like 2*am* to me) trying to win a computerized fishing contest?

I really, really wanted to get the Salty title for one of my toons, but I just don't see it happening. And it sucks to know that the only thing keeping me from it is the timing of the event.

Personally I would rather see them replace the contest requirement for "Salty" with a few of the rare catches that AREN'T part of the achievement. Heck, I WANT a reason to fish for the Giant Sewer Rat, and it'd be interesting to make people catch Old Crafty AND Old Ironjaw! Hanging out in an enemy city long enough to actually catch the one that isn't "yours" shows dedication to the sport, no?

Actually I was kinda irritated to learn Old Ironjaw WASN'T part of the title, AFTER I'd caught him (and it took forever, as you can imagine).

Ah well. I'm really bummed to know that I'll never get that title despite my love for fishing and all the work I've put into it, but I suppose Blizz has to do what Bzlizz has to do.

Really, this achievement is only dictated by luck if you let it. Some social engineering will get you this title. I won this achievement 2 weeks in a row, for the rod and the trinket...and this was back in the day when raids of 40+ ally would camp it. So I am tired of hearing people on this board cry about RNG and luck. You make your own luck in this game. It was no luck that my 1st 2 weeks doing this that I got it both times.

1) Pick a side/path and keep to it. Practice your route before the contest, as all the pools are in the same place, just replaced by Tastyfish.

2) Get about 10-15 friends to come with you. Offer to pay them each 100g or so for their 40 min of time. Trust me, this is how I won my 1st two weeks doing this achievement.

3) Send 2 groups of 3-4 roaming every coast, killing every ally they find. This is your gank group. It will immediately weed out some of your competition.

4) Keep 2 with you as bodyguards. Never stop to help them kill someone, always fish. Have a pally be 1 of your bodyguards, for mount increase speed aura.

5) Send 1 group of 2 people as your "spotters". They run up and down and spot pools for you. It is best if they are male tauren. If any ally come by, kill them. If any horde come by, get your 2 tauren friends in the water, jumping up and down, making it near impossible to click on the catch for the competitor.

6) Carry Elixir of Water Walking with you so you can easily cross any water obstructions and easily maneuver to get any pool. Or have a DK be one of your bodyguards.

7) Lastly, don't bother with setting your stone to BB. Have a summon team consisting of a Warlock and 2 friends be ready right @ the turn in. Not only do summons have no cast time, but it will put you closer to the turn in. This contest is ALL about using every last second. When you are at around 35 tastyfish, have them summon you, so that the absolute second you get all 40, you can click accept on your summon and turn it in.

Thats about it. You follow those 7 rules exactly and I promise you, you will win whenever you want to win. You may think that some of my tactics are semi-dick moves. But hey, I have been known to go to STV and win the contest weeks in a row for no better reason than to stop people from getting their achievement. :-D

So, after winning this contest way back when it started on my warlock, on the second week, I have since changed to a DK, and let me tell ya, bad luck is really getting me down.

I got everything else for my new Salty title pretty easy and quickly (Pinchy droipped in 24 casts, vs 18 months of fishing last time)

But every week I end up at 38-39 when the winner gets anounced. so depressing. Half the time it's because I get a yellowtail 2-3 times in a row and done.

Oh well, here's hoping for next week. Cause I must do this achievement vs the enw one, because I must have the fishing rod!

I have spent the last week trying to get the 22 lbs lobster or 103 Mightfish. It has not gone well. I'm fishing in the Bay of Storms on the island where Loramus Thalipedes (NPC) is. I'm starting to get SERIOUSLY frustrated, does anyone have any confirmation on these fish??!! Any insight would be greatly appreciated (and yes the bobber is always within the zone). I'm so heavily invested in this venture, I'm not sure I can stop now regardless but here are stats thus far:

Darkclaw Lobster: 5853 (45.6%)
Winter Squid: 2606 (20.3%)
Stonescale Eel: 1402 (10.9%)
Big-mouth Clam: 1205 (9.4%)
Large Mightfish: 1144 (8.9%)
Spotted Yellowtail: 407 (3.2%)
Reinforced Locked Chest: 114 (.9%)
Heavy Crate: 42 (.3%)
9 Pound Lobster: 14 (.1%)
7 Pound Lobster: 13 (.1%)
70 Pound Mightfish: 9 (.1%)
15 Pound Lobster: 8 (.1%)
19 Pound Lobster: 7 (.1%)
12 Pound Lobster: 6 (.1%)
21 Pound Lobster: 2 (.1%)

TOTAL: 12832

Judging by the amount of pound lobsters I've caught I can only assume I'm in the right place, and its just a matter of time before the 22lbs drops. However do you think being in Hetaera's Clutch or Scalebeard's Cave might result in more pound mightfish? I know time of day effects catch rate of some fish....would this effect the pound fish drop rate? Lastly I have caught other achievement fish after completing, this hasn't changed correct?

Having paid for 2 epic flyers and a mechano hog just by selling food Im not to excited about this. On the other hand though its not like its really that easy to fish for this stuff without being attacked at lower levels. A level 1fishing glacial salmon pools is going to get hit by a bear or the opposing faction at the lumber mill. Lloot crazed divers are at the sculpin lake in Borean Tundra. Nettlefish ahve all sorts of animals runnnig around their pools. Im just not sure how this will all shake out. I dont like professions being easy. Going through the bs to get them leveled was the only thing keeping the market at a certain level. A lot of people just wouldnt bother but now its always getting easier and easier. Plus it makes me feel old and grumpy :p

Here are some more discussions on the official forums:

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=20677230833
http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=11155812409

Pool fishing involves moving around, looking for specific things in the water. Pools are the closest we currently have to the Cataclysm method of fishing mentioned at BlizzCon (hooking specific fish you can see swimming). Encouraging pool fishing in this patch makes a lot of sense. In fact, it may be an attempt to demonstrate that a more interactive method of fishing can be popular. Although people here tend to mostly fish from pools, over all players open water is much more popular. So trying to make the least popular aspect of fishing more popular might be logical overall, even if we see things differently.

Of course leveling fishing skill (and specifically leveling alongside cooking) appears (same source) to account for a significant proportion of fishing activity. There's a risk of simply making the whole cycle pointless: Nobody needs to level fishing skill, so nobody fishes. Rationally, you'd counter that by arguing that if people didn't want to fish, they would not have levelled fishing skill. However Joanna Average WoW player transpires to be surprisingly irrational. "That 1/450 bar needs to be filled!" "One day I'll want to farm Mr. Pinchy..." I'm sure we've all been there, even if we find a reason to justify our actions. A superficial (or worse, pure economist) understanding of that irrationality is a dangerous thing.

Traditionally the role of fishing skill has been to test patience. Patience is the main requirement for fishing. And requiring 10 or 15 hours of fishing before an angler can catch the good stuff, is what separated "us from them". It's also classic EverQuest-style grinding, that used to be common in WoW: Do the same thing over-and-over, before you can do what you actually wanted to do.

Patch 3.1 started to dilute the test of patience. 3.3 dilutes it so far we're struggling to see a purpose.

The basic problem for fishing (and all WoW professions) is that there was never a hard part that followed the "pointless grind" of skilling-up. So removing the need for skill means that everyone can do it immediately. Consequently, there's nothing exclusive or special for anglers who are prepared to put a lot of work into the profession.

Or is there? Ah, but there is! At least for fishing. Take a step back and look at this forum. Or perhaps earlier in the year, when things were busier: The most popular topics are about catching the Sea Turtle, Pinchy, One that Got Away. Listen to the furvor with which people defend (or are annoyed by) the Salty title. All things that are a serious test of patience, and provide the angler with something to care about, something exclusive that is valued among those they play with.

Now, there are all kind of issues with this form of non-monetary, individualistic consumerism. And I suspect we'll eventually laugh at the paradox of how Blizzard's attempt to counter inequalities that exist outside of the game (by blocking Real Money Trading), has actually created one of the most unequal communities within the game (by trying to prevent the trade of anything perceived to have value). But that's a philosophical discussion for another time. We are where we are. And right now we're in a land where titles, mounts, and other apparently useless things have the greatest sense of value.

Why not go further? No computer-incremented skills whatsoever. Instead (if fishing still is a test of human patience) add far more apparently useless, but rare, things that take patience to acquire. (Rare doesn't imply strictly random - rare but less variable - for example a Sea Turtle might take 4,000-5,000 casts, not 1-~25,000 casts - excessive variability causes frustration as the mind either can't understand the pattern, or feels the pattern is unfair.) Or perhaps associate fishing with something other than patience.

There are lots of possibilities following this line of thought: But perhaps the value of fishing shouldn't be thought of in terms of the ability to catch buff food. Increasingly, the real prestige is a Turtle-mounted Salty with a Crawdad in tow. Or similar.

I find it realy strange that they put him much closer to a alliance inn than a horde/neutral inn.. aldo i'm alliance i still don't think its fair. unless the catch is so rare it dousn't matter that you have 10/30 sec disadvantage.

The Elder's Tuskarr-like size could very well prevent players from blocking him. I think you'd need at least a mammoth to block him and even then some part of his model might stick out of a mammoth's model.

In any case, nothing stops you from enabling name plates in this situation. You can right-click name plates just like you can right-click the actual NPC. That way a player blocking Elder Clearwater doesn't impact your gameplay negatively - other than forcing you to briefly enable name plates. The default keyboard shortcut is - correct me if I'm wrong - Ctrl+V, Shift+V or just V. Something along those lines.

As for his position, yesterday's fishing derby on the test realm had him spawn next to Marcia Chase at the fountain in Dalaran's Eventide district. He spawned at 8 p.m. server time, announced the derby's end at 9 p.m. and (presumably, since I didn't stay to witness it in person) disappeared at 10 p.m. The Kalu'ak Fishing Derby article has this info and more.

So where is the Elder stationed in Dalaran? Is there anything to keep jerks from Mammoth-blocking him?

Sadly it seems we anglers are becoming another victim of the dumbing-down in the name of accessibility which is sweeping through wow......

About open water. I have ~86.000 casts in Northrend in open water for last 6 months, no turtle. So, I think, you must catch one in pools only.
Now I have ~300 casts in pools (Grizly Hill). No turtle. From articles in this topic, I think, that probability ~1/3000.

Thanks for all the reports. And hello again Contiki! I've updated the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby article with a summary of what I think is supposed to happen.

It's possible The Frozen Sea is bugged. It makes no sense that those pools would be excluded. I also noticed that Borean Man O' War School never contained any Borean Man O' War - just suckerfish and failed casts (no loot window).

I heard Elder Clearwater's final yell in Borean Tundra, so I'm guessing it is Northrend-wide. However, that was the only announcement I heard. The fact that Elder Clearwater doesn't appear until precisely 20:00 doesn't help either - there's no visual reassurance that the event is happening.

I also tried the Fishing Derby tonight with no luck. I caught my fish about 8:45 (clearly too late to get a win) and hearthed back to Dalaran to turn it in. The Elder would not talk to me and I noticed a couple of other peeps coming up behind me, looking confused. I assume he didn't talk to them either.

I didn't delete my fish, but I logged out before the 9pm announcement. I will make sure to stay the full hour next week, now that I know about that part. I also submitted a suggestion to Blizzard that they add a "winner" announcement like they have in STV. No sense tormenting folks for an hour when the contest is over in 20 minutes! I think it would also be nice to have a starter message when the event begins.

*nods to el*

I went for Deep Sea Monsterbellies and Moonglow Cuttlefish from pools in the Frozen Sea south of the Borean Tundra (the icebergs a couple hundred meters out) and, like with Kahless, that didn't yield a shark. I got roughly 120 casts. Might have been bad luck. Or maybe the Frozen Sea pools generally don't hold a shark.

As for Elder Clearwater, was his yell at 21:00 audible outside of Dalaran? Like continent-wide? I returned to the city a few minutes to nine and so only heard his yell within the city. I don't know if players outside of Dalaran were able to hear it - that'd be nice to know.

Greetings,

Contiki
