Indeed, Idoru. I reached level 89 on Friday morning and everything was still grey. I think this is a case where data-mining needs to be treated with extreme caution. Since The Anglers' settlements were actively being populated over the last few beta builds (eg MoP: Sri-La Village), it is entirely likely The Anglers' quests are still a work in progress.

The Journeyman Cookbook has caused a fair bit of discussion. It isn't available in-game, and given that it has "test" written all over it, probably never will be.

The spell it triggers is curious, because it is assigned to its own SkillLine group. SkillLines are groups of spells, like professions or specialisations. There was no need to create a new group just to have the item, so whatever the item is intended to test will be slightly unusual. Gut feeling is some sort of test for account-bound recipes, simply because it is called a "cookbook". But it could be something very different.

I suspect enough critical ingredients are missing to make it impossible to level cooking yet. The only reason I could train specializations was because I had already reached 530 skill on Fish Cakes, back before the skill-up profile for that dish changed to go grey at 500.

wildfowl drumstick

Years ago Sutorix (the developer of Fishing Buddy) and I discussed an automated data collection option, but it never came to anything. Currently most data here is sampled, but primarily based on analysis of patterns:

Traditionally those patterns were a much easier way of understanding the catches than the raw data, since the same pattern would recur in many places/times periods/etc. Crudely that's why the information here is more accurate than sites like Wowhead, which have a high sample size, but don't capture the correct patterns within their sample size. For example, completely missing aspects like pool/open water differences, inland/coastal, time of day, junk catches due to skill, and so on.

So while it is generally true that more information gives better values, it is only truly true with the right information, not just more. In practice things work quite well with an initial sample and then people subsequently reporting oddities and changes they find.

Yeah I had a LITTLE (142 casts) problem getting a huge spotted fel tail but certainly not 6+ hours hard. Although it seemed to take forever in part due to the pure frustration because I'd already caught 1000s when those fish were useful :P

can't say for sure because its tough to tell which fish were caught before or after my reported change but in 11k casts im running at about 32%...but as you said, last time I was there seemed like the rate had increased. I'll try to get a big number posted sometime next week in an area I haven't fished so we can get this settled.

Uldum may be wrongly stated here. A month or 3 ago there were several reports that the catch rate for Lavascale Catfish had increased, which I also found when I re-checked. But since there have been several reports that the catch rate is back around 33%... On a 1000 sample we should be able to see a 5% difference fairly clearly. I'm inclined to believe the larger, more recent, number - yours.

Just need to win a fishing contest now to get my Salty title. After trying quite a bit, over 14,000 casts mostly in Howling Fjord in pools looking for the Dark Herring, I had basically given up. I decided to give Stonebull Lake in Mulgore a try. Caught "15 Pound Mud Snapper" on my 567th cast. Here are the stats:

332 Raw Brilliant Smallfish
220 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper
3 Minor Mana Potion
4 12 Pound Mud Snapper
2 10 Pound Mud Snapper
1 Flange Mace
1 Practice Sword
3 misclicks (don't know if these matter at all or not, but wanted to include for honesty)
1 15 Pound Mud Snapper

So glad to finally have just one obstacle left to over come and get my "Salty" on. Good luck to everyone else that is still working on this!

Oceanic water rafting is the quest item. In practice the oceanic ("coastal") restriction enforces itself, because all Krasarang Wilds' inland rivers flow into the sea via small waterfalls, which makes it tricky to ride the raft from the sea up onto the rivers.

Noticed the other day when testing, that the buff stays on even when you dismount and run (don't mount as you lose the 'Raft' buff) so it was quite possible to run up to Krasarang River go onto the water and the raft appeared.

Few things noted using the raft, remembering it is still early beta and plenty can change.

Buff stays on within Krasarang Wilds as el noted. This also includes the main river up to the Falls where you move to another area in the zone and it goes. So not just 'Oceanic' i.e. sea.

You can fish while on the Raft but you can also use weapons as a hunter or spells etc. You can do this while moving which I think is unique for mounts? So I could ride the Raft while kiting a shark until dead. Some potential for exploits perhaps.

Taking damage is like a mount in that you take damage and can be dismounted by a stun, otherwise you can outrun a mob. But you can also heal while moving as per 2. It may work better if it acts like waterwalking in that, if you take damage the buff goes.

Hunter's pets are not automatically put to Passive so if you or the pet aggro then if on other setting it will fight the mob. Eventually if you keep going, it will despawn and you need to resummon.

If you ride it onto land you get a sudden jolt forward as it despawn. You can avoid this if you jump as you hit the land.

Sometimes it does not spawn and you are basically waterwalking. To get it to spawn either run and jump usually does it or dive and resurface. Bit like waterwalking proper. Latency can make it tough work.

As with 2. you can summon and dismiss pets as you move/ travel. Really anything apart from try to summon another mount. Not tried a mage Blink while mounted which could be interesting.

At level 85 with swift training it is 200% normal travel speed. Basically like being mounted with a waterwalking potion or DK mount etc.

Overall it is a fascinating mechanic. Part buff, part mount. I hope any potential for exploits does not mean it is removed as it is really a great thing. I also hope they introduce Rafts or similar buff water mounts.

Being able to stand or sit and fish from it is very cool (now do the same for the magic carpet!)

This is especially so for the northern end of Pandaria which has sheer cliffs with few places for fishing from land in parts. Consider like parts of Northrend. Just opens up a lot of possibilities for cool fishing spots. And why it will be a shame if the faction reward raft is only 10 minute or similar short duration with 1 hour cooldown.

He is titled <The Anglers Quartermaster> at Angler's Wharf, Krasarang Wilds in Pandaria.

He sells the faction rewards for 'The Anglers' and is also a Fishing Trainer.

A fellow angler I see! I have a variety of gear from these local fisherman [sic],

From window;

Hello fellow angler! Have you been around these parts long?
Me and my buddy "Big Hook" here travel far and wide looking for the next catch!

We ran into this place by accident and the locals were friendly with both their supplies and booze so we decided to stick around!

He sits in a boat on a Fishing Chair with it's fishing umbrella. Next to him is his new fishing buddy, John "Big Hook" Marsock <Sports Fisherman>.

Wetlands seems to be the easiest place to find these now. After a few hours clearing pools in various zones, came to Wetlands, and found one in one of the inland pools near the coast straight away.

Last Saturday I was poised for the Kalu’ak Derby. I stationed myself just above Kaskala where the puddle-jumper pools are. Made sure I was there in plenty of time, and that I was looking at Server time.

Never heard a thing. No warning, no start, no winner. I fished for about 15 minutes before I figured someone already won. Sure enough, hearthed to Dalaran, and Elder Clearwater did indeed tell me there'd already been a winner.

I re-checked that my chat channels were all enabled. Stumped.

This happen to anyone else before?

The pet was added as a reward to an existing quest, which means any character that previously completed that quest cannot get the new reward. Just a quirk of testing.

Command /use petname (eg /use fishy) will summon any pet you thought you had learnt. The current User Interface is heavily bugged.

This must be a recent addition.
I have finished all quests in Jade Forest and didn't get this reward.

It maybe an Alliance only quest line, if you you are playing a Horde character on the Beta server?

Looking back through the quest chain (it's right from the near beginning quests for Alliance at Wayward Landing) it seems to start with;

Quest: The Missing Admiral

leading all the way to a quest given in the Pearlfin Village;

Quest: Let Them Burn

which is shown on wowhead as the one giving this pet reward;

Let Them Burn

There are other questlines which may be involved such as the ones from Lorewalker Cho (notably The Dream Brew which takes you on a flight to the location of Prince Anduin) and another loot drop quest item, Trail of the White Pawn, although I do not know if this is necessary or just a breadcrumb quest.

As a note although you get the 'Fishy' companion as the final reward, on learning it, it does not show up in the new Pet Journal so it is not possible to summon at the moment. I guess they need to update the list of pets in the journal for the new ones.

Oceanic water rafting is the quest item. In practice the oceanic ("coastal") restriction enforces itself, because all Krasarang Wilds' inland rivers flow into the sea via small waterfalls, which makes it tricky to ride the raft from the sea up onto the rivers.
Another curious aside is the Water Strider model: There are over 10 differently coloured versions. That could be an artist at play. Or it could be that there will be a family of slightly different Water Strider mounts to collect.

True, though there are other areas to access coastal water (oceanic) such as Sri La fishing village in The Jade Forest, for instance, talking of the actual buff. Maybe other similar buffs for other areas or variants.

Will be a real shame if there is no option for a hour long buff item to use everywhere.

Or perhaps it spawns in some different colours, as some hunter pets do. Though 10 seems a lot!

Why I love Beta. So many, 'what if's' ;)
