I know the techniques for soloing are pretty clear at this point, but wanted to add one very important observation from my experience -- you don't have to die!!! :-)

I gained the achievement a few days ago with my druid (used a Skyguard cape and an elixir of water walking to get to the strange pool). The moment I got the achievement, I activated my hearthstone, and was able to hearth away before being attacked.

The trick is to sit in Dragonblight (on the ledge on the southern side of Wintergrasp), but cast so that your bobber lands in Wintergrasp. Catch is based on where the bobbers lands. PvP flag is based on where you are.

(Some people might view this as an exploit, I'm not sure. All my experiences are on PvP realms, so it makes no difference.)

I'm a PvE server carebear who likes to make Fish Feasts for her raid team and it would be nice to be able to fish in peace :)

I think I may be one of the luckiest people around, because it only took 102 casts to find Mr. Pinchy. I started fishing in Outland yesterday (11-18-09) for about half and hour, and today (11-19-09) for the same amount of time, and viola! There he was. I flew from lake to lake, and found my Mr. Pinchy in Lake Ere'Noru. I will update my second and third wishes as soon as I make them.

Wish #1: Magical Crawdad Box
Wish #2: unused
Wish #3: unused

This is a list of the things I caught:

56 Furious Crawdad
22 Golden Darter
7 Motes of Water
6 Magical Scrolls (2 intellect, 2 strength, 1 spirit, 1 agility)
5 Barbed Gill Trout
3 Curious Crates (3 Fel Iron Ore, 8 Knothide Leather Scraps)
1 Enormous Barbed Gill Trout
1 Huge Spotted Feltail
1 Mr. Pinchy

I hope this information is useful for those still trying! Good luck!

I'm pretty sure this can't be done with macros. You have to realize that WoW macros are intentionally limited to prevent the macro from making decisions that Blizzard feels the player should be making. The problem is wanting a macro to use different items when specific items are equipped. As far as I know, there isn't even any such thing as a macro conditionl for a specific item being equipped.

It may be possible, but I don't think so. You can ask on the macro & UI forums. Here's a workaround that does work.

/cast [nomod] Fishing
/use [mod:alt] Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat
/use [mod:shift] Sharpened Fish Hook
/use [mod:shift] Arcanite Fishing Pole

Holding alt uses hat, holding shift uses hook, regular fishes. Reverse the instances of alt and shift if you want the reverse.

Is a distinctive sound worth more than a distinctive image? Or is the size of the bobber important - the fact it is so small means that sound becomes more important?
Yes. No. Yes. I think all your arguments against that could be bypassed by using two sounds for the catch. One for when you catch something and one for everyone else.
When fishing in a group - typically in the Dalaran Sewers or for the WG fishing dailies, I often get confused when I have caught something.

I was probably unclear in my original post. This is what I meant -- my bobber has one sound, everyone else's has another.

And Cherel's reason (fishing in groups) is exactly why.

I posted a week ago and shortly after, I landed her. I chose to go to the glaciers off of South Borean. Others were raiding but I decided to take it easy and do my usual routine fishing. It came out of a pool at the southern-most edge of the glaciers next to a small one. I used my fishing hat and one of the +100 glow worms. I couldn't tell you if it helped.

I immediately mounted it and swam for shore with it and landed on the beach in east borean and took some screenies. He is definitely one of my favorites. I sit in Dal and pop him in and out of his shell. I take him off "run" and casually stroll with him.

Btw, I had fished up over 18K items by the time I got her. My friend has her on 2 of her toons now, but she is just lucky that way. Some of us have to be more persistent.

Mikado, the Northrend dailies are possible (at least Jewel in the Sewer) at less than 250 skill - with Seth's Pole and a +100 lure on my priest alt, who is just around 250 fishing, I make sure to do it every time it's up (poor thing cant fly in Northrend yet, and has very few flight points).

It takes longer, for sure, but it's doable :)

Went from Fishing 254 to Fishing 378 while fishing for Old Ironjaw. I don't have a tracker, but I'm tired of catfish and mud snapper. I estimate I caught over 900 fish as well as 8 lesser healing potions, 2 17-pound catfish, 1 19-pound catfish and a [ Pattern: Colorful Kilt ]. I also noticed I had about a 1% no hit rate on the bobber. All total this took two days and about 4 hours of fishing.

I wouldn't mind if one got a better "aim" in casting as one gets higher in skill. Maybe they could "tighten up" the trapezoidal area where casts can land, so one had more control over casting. As an IRL fisherman, it's frustrating to line up a cast in game and come nowhere close to where I'm aiming.

On SHIFT-CLICK (or right-click, either way)
- apply to my fishing pole (already equipped) a Sharpened Fish Hook if no Weather Beaten Fishing Hat is equipped

Note - I use ItemRack with a fishing gear set to equip a pole (and a fishing hat for my toons that have one).

Well, to add my two cents...the Valley of Honor is a much better place to fish than The Valley of Spirits. I fished the Valley of Spirits pool for awhile, but was eventually ganked. It wasn't a bad spot, really...I've caught about 300 fish there in previous attempts but I wanted to give the other place a try. I went to the Valley of Honor waterfall during "off-hours" without any problem. I'm a lvl 80 ret pally, and I entered through the western gate. Just saddle up and go for it. I stayed there for a few hours over a couple of days, logging in and out when I had the time to play. I always used Elixer of Camouflage, and so the Hunters couldn't track me. I also used Blackened Worg Steak which allows you to track humanoids; I liked watching the traffic go by me on the minimap. No one touched me there, although I do think a lvl 80 orc saw me. (Thank you from a fellow fisherman.) He was fishing too and may have heard my bobber. I couldn't hear his (and I tried to) but being under the waterfall may have been the reason why. Just for the sake of posterity, and since it seems that there are people who are into this sort of thing, here's what I caught this time around:

Longjaw Mud Snapper: 530
Bristle Whisker Catfish: 211
Brilliant Smallfish: 146
17 pound Catfish: 4
Lesser healing potion: 3
Bloated Mud Snapper: 2
Infantry Tunic of the Monkey: 1
Short Bastard Sword of the Monkey: 1
The One Ring: 1
Old Crafty: 1

For a total of 900 casts.

It may not be as easy for others to get to the waterfall as it was for me, but it's worth it if you're planning on staying there for a while. I swore I wasn't going to leave until I caught the bugger, so I'd have kept on fighting and/or corpse hopping my way in if I'd had to.
