Find Fish<br /> it's common sense but i had "find fish" on, so i could see the pools of tastyfish on my minimap. if you don't have it already, <a href="http://www.elsanglin.com/2_3_changes.html#tracking_journal">you can find more info on that here</a></p> <p>2. Get There Early<br /> got there early enough to set my hearth to Booty Bay and waited out on the coast for the contest to begin. depending on where your hearth is, about 1:40-1:45 server time is a good time to head down there</p> <p>3. Water Walking<br /> if you're not a shaman, collect them from fishing dailies or get an alchemist to create them for you. water walking's freedom is essential to helping you save much needed time when traveling from one pool to another. and for you priests, don't rely on levitate either. you'll need water walking specifically so you can mount up on the water</p> <p>4. Stay Away From the Crowd: Where to Start<br /> i read two very important pieces of info on <a href="http://www.elsanglin.com/stranglethorn_extravaganza_strategy.html">this page</a> that definitely gave me my edge. first i read that there was no real place to start fishing, though the person who wrote the guide suggested starting in the center of the western coast. so i did that and i didn't run into people for a good ten minutes. it makes sense, most people would start at one edge of the coast and work their way towards the other. and when they do that, they're busy dealing with the crowd taking their tastyfish</p> <p>5. Stay Away From the Crowd: Do the Opposite<br /> the other important piece of info i read was "You must learn to adapt to what other anglers are doing, and normally do the opposite." this tip may have been the one that gave me my win. in the past, i would fish anywhere. if three people were trying to grab fish from a pool, i'd jump in. i mean, any piece of fish is worth fishing for, right? wrong. if you're spending your entire time competing for pools of fish, then you're wasting your time. the more people fishing out of one pool drains that pool faster and forces you to travel more often than you should. stay away from the crowd. when i saw a group of people coming at me from one direction, i'd try to stay ahead of them, or i would run towards them and look for pools of respawned fish</p> <p>6. Research Beforehand! I run more than one account so I have a lot of alts to get the pole with and I use them almost every day. All of my level 70+ alts (12 or so) complete the daily fishing in dalaran. I believe only two don't have the weather-beaten fishing hat. There is nothing wrong with having extremely difficult achievements that are not attainable for many, or most people. I really hate the culture of handing everything to players on a plate and letting even the most inept complete all the things there are to achieve.</p> <p>Salty means you have patience, above all else, but the inclusion of having to win one of the competitions means you have strategy as well. For the Kala'uk derby, less so, that is a lot more luck than the STV competition, and it is for that reason that I chose to target the STV competition instead.</p> <p>There are many excellent suggestions for a strategy to win STV. I did it on a very busy PvP server and I did it solo without any support from my guild or friends. Well although it involves spending a good few hours beforehand for relatively small gain, some form of "preparation" is possible. I've noted that people tend to stop fishing pools as much a couple of hours before the contest starts. Starting last week i have begun "forcing" pools into a close group. In Grizzly Hills I succeeded (after a good half hour) Of emptying most of the southern Imperial Manta Ray pools and filling most of the eastern ray schools.</p> <p>However, this week i'm going to try something else: fishing as many pools as i can to reduce the number of fish in each pool (apart from mine on the east coast : P) Effectively all one does is fish 2-3 catches out of each pool so that only 1 or 2 fish remain in each pool. The theory being that competitors will take longer travelling between useless pools while I catch the shark and win : D Obviously it's gonna take some time to go around every pool in Northrend, and sure some lucky randomer with a fishing skill of 23 may still get it on his first catch, but it has to help SOMEHOW!</p> <p>I'm not sure if some will view this as cheating, but I for one think this is perfectly acceptable : )</p> <p>What do you guys think? Too much effort for too little gain?</p> <p>Also still wearing max fishing gear out of paranoia incase the skill does have some affect on your chances. :P any proof of that yet?</p> <p>Anyways thanks for reading, sorry if post is a bit lengthly. Just the fishing pole.</p> <p>Second, Water-Walking potions. Necessary to level the playing field between you and DKs/Shammies. And I can't tell you how many pools are more accessible from the ocean than from the shore.</p> <p>Third. Know the area, and know the limits of your radar. Take for example, the cove south of Grom'Gol. What would you spend more time doing, going all the way around the cove on the beach, or across the cove (with Water Walking), with your radar skirting the far shoreline? Make sure you know the limits of your radar, and use it to your advantage to create shortcuts.</p> <p>Finally. Learn to trust respawns. So many times I'll be fishing, working my way south from Grom'Gol, and the zerg from Booty Bay will work it's way north to me. So many angler's think that that carrion swarm has obviously fished everything out. Not so. The respawns on pools are so fast that you can find a pool 100 yds behind the zerg very, very often. Never get caught up in the zerg. Just wave at them, and travel to where they were. It WILL be an area now where you can fish alone for 5-6 min. Also, never fish in someone else's pool, unless they just made their first cast.
