so today was my first win. it's very exciting to finally be able to turn into an ugly fish. anyways, i contribute most of my win to luck. i woke up from a nap right before the contest started and just decided to give it a try even though i didn't think i'd get there in time. i also had no trouble with griefers on either faction, though i did spot a well-known alliance griefer before the contest while i was in Booty Bay. but a good portion of my win was thanks to good strategy. most of that strategy can be found on this page. i'm here to reiterate some of that knowledge and hopefully get you guys a step closer to that Salty title

1. Find Fish
it's common sense but i had "find fish" on, so i could see the pools of tastyfish on my minimap. if you don't have it already, you can find more info on that here

2. Get There Early
got there early enough to set my hearth to Booty Bay and waited out on the coast for the contest to begin. depending on where your hearth is, about 1:40-1:45 server time is a good time to head down there

3. Water Walking
if you're not a shaman, collect them from fishing dailies or get an alchemist to create them for you. water walking's freedom is essential to helping you save much needed time when traveling from one pool to another. and for you priests, don't rely on levitate either. you'll need water walking specifically so you can mount up on the water

4. Stay Away From the Crowd: Where to Start
i read two very important pieces of info on this page that definitely gave me my edge. first i read that there was no real place to start fishing, though the person who wrote the guide suggested starting in the center of the western coast. so i did that and i didn't run into people for a good ten minutes. it makes sense, most people would start at one edge of the coast and work their way towards the other. and when they do that, they're busy dealing with the crowd taking their tastyfish

5. Stay Away From the Crowd: Do the Opposite
the other important piece of info i read was "You must learn to adapt to what other anglers are doing, and normally do the opposite." this tip may have been the one that gave me my win. in the past, i would fish anywhere. if three people were trying to grab fish from a pool, i'd jump in. i mean, any piece of fish is worth fishing for, right? wrong. if you're spending your entire time competing for pools of fish, then you're wasting your time. the more people fishing out of one pool drains that pool faster and forces you to travel more often than you should. stay away from the crowd. when i saw a group of people coming at me from one direction, i'd try to stay ahead of them, or i would run towards them and look for pools of respawned fish

6. Research Beforehand! Know What You Want
i didn't have trouble with this but i thought i'd share the tip anyways. once you've gotten your fish and you're ready to turn it in, choose your reward and complete the quest as soon as possible. i've read stories about people trying to figure out which prize they want as another person snuck up behind them and took first prize for themselves. it's common sense but definitely something to keep in mind

well, i slept through yesterday's Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, so i'll give it a try next week. if i win, then that means i'm doing something right and i'll be back here to start a thread on it. see you guys, and happy fishing!

...and why would you win 12 or 13 tourneys? Exceptionally bad form imo. That's like everyone rolling need on raid loot when you don't ever plan on using the item. "I'm rolling NEED...its okay, I already have the loot, but I'd just like to win the roll anyway...No worries".
If I were your guild leader, I'd kick you out just for this. Crappy quality in a guild member imo.

I never won more than twice on one character. Only two have trinkets. I run more than one account so I have a lot of alts to get the pole with and I use them almost every day. All of my level 70+ alts (12 or so) complete the daily fishing in dalaran. I believe only two don't have the weather-beaten fishing hat. Up to 15 wins now I think.

I like the way the pole looks. It's the best item in the game but just looks like any old rod, it's understated. Maybe I like that because I am British.

Anyway the key thing for me is that it goes really well with my fishing gear, compared to the more "fancy" poles that you would never actually see anyone in real life using.

The salty title shows you're litterally at one with the fishes, it's a shame some people won't be able to get it but the opportunity is there to remove the biggest fishing challenge in the game from the title would be a slap in the face of all those who have worked their ass off to get it.

I completely agree with this statement.

Salty would be a massively lesser achievement if it did not include winning one of the derbies. Personally I think it should be expanded to include a requirement for winning both competitions as well as Old Crafty, Ironjaw, turtle mount, and Giant Rat.

I'm sorry but if you can't make a Sunday that's just too bad. There is nothing wrong with having extremely difficult achievements that are not attainable for many, or most people. I really hate the culture of handing everything to players on a plate and letting even the most inept complete all the things there are to achieve.

Salty means you have patience, above all else, but the inclusion of having to win one of the competitions means you have strategy as well. For the Kala'uk derby, less so, that is a lot more luck than the STV competition, and it is for that reason that I chose to target the STV competition instead.

There are many excellent suggestions for a strategy to win STV. I did it on a very busy PvP server and I did it solo without any support from my guild or friends. Knowing where to fish, how to fish, when to fish, how to avoid enemy faction players, how to avoid same faction competitors, all of this is part of the achievement of winning this competition and taking that out of the equation simply reduces the title to a time-sink grind with absolutely no skill or experience involved.

..as far as all the 'oh i wish the pole looked cooler'...barf.

the pole rocks because its simple. it speaks for itself. the last thing i want is a pole that might draw any attention away from my incredibly over-sized, ridiculously-monstrous, outlandishly-stupid-even-for-a-fantasyworld "cloth" shoulders. ....or my similiary stupendous "caster" sword that's about 1/2 my size.

the pole is nice change from the average over-done epic items. i sooooo hope it doesn't get updated.

I have both and what no one mentions is that the trinket actually kinda sucks (especially for locks as it's only 5% faster than Unending Breath).

*It has a 30 second cooldown when equipped so you have to plan ahead.
*You pop out of form whenever you hit air bubbles which is very annoying.
*Any damage or casting breaks form.

DEFINATELY pole first.

I don't think its mentioned in anyone's strats, but having a Swiftness of Zanza elixir (requires Revered with Zandalar Tribe) is a real advantage (moreso for the STV tourney, as luck has less to do with winning in that one). It's +20% runspeed for 2 hours.

I caught the shark (and won the contest) today on the Silvermoon US server. With it came the Salty title!

Win yes!

Effective Fishing Skill 483 (450 + Mastercraft Kalu'ak Pole + +3 line), didn't bother with lures because I only fished in pools

Faction Glory to the Alliance!

Successful Casts 15 casts across five pools

Pygmy Suckerfish Caught 5; I was getting worried at the start because my first seven casts caught no Suckerfish

Where Shark Caught Fangtooth Herring Pool at the southern tip of Cauldros Isle in Howling Fjord

Turn-in Time (to Elder Clearwater) Somewhere between 14:06 and 14:07, probably closer to the latter

Anything Unusual (for example, low level win or interesting strategy) Not really in the unusual category...but I'm happy I didn't lose because I stared at the shark with my mouth open for a few seconds before I snapped back into action and hit my hearthstone. As I was running to the turn-in, I saw someone else reach Elder Clearwater, but that person was either just curious about him or spent too much time thinking over the prize because that person was there a good 5 seconds ahead of me and I still won. In case anyone is curious, I chose the boots.

Am I the only one disappointed with it? It seems more like a raffle then an actual competition.
I asked if it could be changed. :-/ I would really like to see something that requires more time to complete and some level of planning.
http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?sid=1&topicId=11824285369

I couldn't agree more about it being a raffle as opposed to a competition. I ranted about it on wowhead a little: http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=24803#comments:id=967744

I'm happy the event is there, and I'm glad it gives people a better chance at a difficult title, but they could have made it just a tad more challenging than "who can beat the RNG first?"

Been lurking here for a while but i thought i'd share my thoughts on the Kalu'ak Derby.
Okay so after having no luck with the Fishing Lottery- I mean Derby so far (I haven't caught a single shark and fished the full hour in every contest so far^^) I've been looking at a few ways one COULD increase their chances of winning.

A few factors that can affect chances of winning:
How close are the pools you're fishing?
How many other people are fishing those pools?

These are the first two which spring to mind. But how about these:
How far apart are everyone else's fishing pools?
How MANY FISH are in their pools? ; )

These last two are of interest to us because we CAN control them.
How? Well although it involves spending a good few hours beforehand for relatively small gain, some form of "preparation" is possible. I've noted that people tend to stop fishing pools as much a couple of hours before the contest starts. Starting last week i have begun "forcing" pools into a close group. In Grizzly Hills I succeeded (after a good half hour) Of emptying most of the southern Imperial Manta Ray pools and filling most of the eastern ray schools.

However, this week i'm going to try something else: fishing as many pools as i can to reduce the number of fish in each pool (apart from mine on the east coast : P) Effectively all one does is fish 2-3 catches out of each pool so that only 1 or 2 fish remain in each pool. The theory being that competitors will take longer travelling between useless pools while I catch the shark and win : D Obviously it's gonna take some time to go around every pool in Northrend, and sure some lucky randomer with a fishing skill of 23 may still get it on his first catch, but it has to help SOMEHOW!

I'm not sure if some will view this as cheating, but I for one think this is perfectly acceptable : )

What do you guys think? Too much effort for too little gain?

Also still wearing max fishing gear out of paranoia incase the skill does have some affect on your chances. :P any proof of that yet?

Anyways thanks for reading, sorry if post is a bit lengthly. Will let you know if i end up with some nice boots or a broken computer and a sore fist!

Heh, when I won, the trinket is what I wanted. Personally, I've enjoyed it way more than I imagine I would have enjoyed the fishing pole - but I'm not overly focused on having the max fishing skill, just a sufficient one.

I just won! So I'd be happy to share my strategy, which is very similar to those posted on here, but there is one thing I'm going to stress.

First, obviously, your fishing should be high enough to where you don't have to worry about lures, drinks, or anything like that. Just the fishing pole.

Second, Water-Walking potions. Necessary to level the playing field between you and DKs/Shammies. And I can't tell you how many pools are more accessible from the ocean than from the shore.

Third. Know the area, and know the limits of your radar. Take for example, the cove south of Grom'Gol. What would you spend more time doing, going all the way around the cove on the beach, or across the cove (with Water Walking), with your radar skirting the far shoreline? Make sure you know the limits of your radar, and use it to your advantage to create shortcuts.

Finally. Learn to trust respawns. So many times I'll be fishing, working my way south from Grom'Gol, and the zerg from Booty Bay will work it's way north to me. So many angler's think that that carrion swarm has obviously fished everything out. Not so. The respawns on pools are so fast that you can find a pool 100 yds behind the zerg very, very often. Never get caught up in the zerg. Just wave at them, and travel to where they were. It WILL be an area now where you can fish alone for 5-6 min. Also, never fish in someone else's pool, unless they just made their first cast. Move on, it's not worth your time.

And between Grom'Gol and Arena is definitely the place to be!

You may input a ticket to a Game Master (GM) via the red question mark in your action bars.

Notify him of the mistake, and he MAY help you out. Eitherway, just keep on doing the contest until you get both the Rod and the Trinket : ) And even TWO trinkets.

A fisherman's outfit needs a lot of tweaking, and when you're Inspected, try to look as ''fishy'' as possible !

Just won today on Ner'Zhul (US). Usually a pretty crowded PVP server I was shocked to actually win after weeks of not seeing a shark even fishing to the 1 hour time limit. Here are my details:

* Win (yes/no) - YES
* Effective Fishing Skill (include bonuses from gear/lures) - 490, 450 skill + 40 from gear
* Faction (Horde/Alliance) - ALLIANCE
* Successful Casts (count up the non-Suckerfish from the start of the contest until the shark catch) - 19
* Pygmy Suckerfish Caught (from the start of the contest until the shark catch) - 10
* Where Shark Caught (pool/water type and zone) - Nettlefish Pool in Sholazar ( I was just NW of the Nesingwary camp)
* Turn-in Time (to Elder Clearwater) - 2:05 PM
* Anything Unusual (for example, low level win or interesting strategy)
