How about the people who are already Salty, but will go for it anyway, because it's A) A Fishing Contest and I'm a fisherman, 2) Got cool stuff. Well, one cool thing anyway. Like I need another pair of boots. I caught 4 of the STV boots before I won that contest.

Glad to see that my sarcasm went right over your head! ;)

I actually thought the next line was a dead giveaway:
"Probably didn't have that much competetion on a EU server at this skewed time"

Although I'm certain that the average time it takes to win this contest will be _way_ shorter, I'll side with El and think that a 1-2 min. contest will not happen.

If we are wrong, they might as well take the whole fishing skill outside and shoot it - since it is obviously very sick anyways.

I agree that if this is implemented as a vanilla-WoW random drop, the contest will be over in 1-2 minutes. And most of that time will be loading Dalaran for whoever got lucky. Such a contest would "suck", because people would not feel like that had a chance. It wouldn't be "fun".

Which is why I'm instinctively looking for a different pattern.

What you are possibly unaware of is that since WotLK, Blizzard have used a technique called progressive drop rates for quest items: The longer you farm for a quest item, the higher the chance of it dropping on each kill. As far as I can't be sure, that's already used for quest fish. But it's basically invisible to the player.

It wouldn't be a major evolution of that technology to track fish catches during a contest. So I disagree with the core of your argument.

As for other factors... well, they can do a lot of those to. The Eventide Fountain gold coin buff is the best example of a catch rate being altered by a simple spell.

So, I'm very interested in what people on test realms are actually seeing, since that's the only way we can start to see the pattern.

In the Guide you say that you need flying mount to go faster and fish pool by pool. That's wrong, the whole "contest", plays on only the 1ST [FIRST] catch. The whole tournament will last 60seconds, that's why people who complained about the wednesday night thing make me laugh. The usual raider time is 8PM, so Everybody would have been able to change their raiding time to 8:01 PM, fucking big deal....

Record breaking 27min Tjalfe, lol...
The records are gonna be under 60seconds...thats the way blizzard want their "winner"...
Never be proud of any "record" that involve RNG in the totality...

Reasonning :

The droprate of the shark have to be 1% inside a pool... Any higher would proove my point even more. Any lower would not even be possible to anyone to turn in the shark even after the winner is declared, since you can still turn in, for some shit reward. So it's 1%.

Now with a popular contest like that, you can expect between 100 to 1000 people (for the servers with 30k dudes). Let's take that 100 for instance. With 100 people running for the tournament, that mean in average one dude will catch the shark on the first catch. This is mathematics. And that's is what Blizzard have called "healthy" luck. We all know RNG is very healthy....
If you have 1000 dudes now, 10 of them in average will cast the shark in the first catch, meaning that the race to dalaran will be of equal importance.... 15sec to catch the shark, 10sec for hearthstone + 10-20 to turn in. Meaning that classes following will win most of the time :
2- Death Knight (+20% mount speed)
2- Paladin (+20%)
3- Hunter (+10%)
I didnt talk about the #1 standalone class, because it's a mage, beyond competition. With the one catch rule, just wait 15 seconds before the tournament begin, Cast "Portal : Dalaran", the tournament start, hope you roll 100 and catch the shark since it is the ONLY WAY TO WIN, click the portal, turn in, and you won... You have banked 10sec of the hearthstone making you unbeatable.

Thats if you are alone. Now if you have help, you can have a warlock summon you right in front of the npc (still you need to roll 100), and every above can be "traded"... auras, portals.

I also heard that Alliance are actually close to the said NPC, so you can factor all the rankings above with 1 - Alliance 2 - Horde, Apparently alliance don't even need to cast their mount once they get to Dalaran, just use a speed potion or engineering boots or whatever...the npc is near their inn...

This contest requires no skill,no guide, no strategy on where are the best pools etc. That's sad but Blizzard want it that way....
They said the Best fisherman of the week must have an "healthy dash of luck"... That's the winner, the great fisherman of Kalu'ak.

People saying "ah now I have a shot at winning, beside booty bay", no you don't....
1/100 chances factored into any other people that catch the shark on the first catch, is impossible. In fact to catch the shark on your first catch, one occurence, one time. You would need 100 weeks in average thats 2 years. And I'm saying in average, the baron mount have 1%, a few of us, have done more than 100 runs and we dont have it, think carefully about it. You could do that tournament for 2 years without ever winning... Even if you mastered the fishing skill, even you could remember the locations of every single pools of Northrend, which is worthy of a grand winner, there is a lot of chances You will never get it... especially on the biggest servers, I see some with 20k even 30k people....

This is the worst contest they could ever make.... 100% RNG....

Kalu'ak Fishing derby = Rand 500. Can you make 500 right now ? try it. I know I don't have that power.

Eventual good scenario that may not be:
Now they may eventually disguise the tournament with a more elaborate pattern like making the droprate increasingly high with the time that pass by. With let's say 1/10000 the first minute, and so on. This is my little voice in my head telling me "blizzard are not that stupid" "they are actually using the money we give them each months".... Still remain carefull, it will surely invalidate the "dalaran races" with the little tips I gave. But the RNG factor remain almost totally intact, while in Booty bay you still have a decent control over it for lets say pve servers (pvp is a different story). So in that scenario, people will fish around the same fish each, minus malus a few... Maybe some would catch a few more but it would not change much thing. Instead of making a rand 500 you would need rand 400 or 450. This still remain totally random.
In that scenario 280% mounts would be necessary, yes . What about 310% mount, and the auras still remain very important... I have a DK/Paladin myself... But I spit on this advantage we then have.

If Blizzard had a brain, a very good brain : the best mechanics would be that way :
A dynamic droprate that has 2 factors
1- the time since the tournament have started
2- your fishing skill : I firmely are against thoses level 1 being able to win, and dudes that have an insane amount of fishing skill not being able to.

However until now there are never been any dynamic droprate EVER in World of Warcraft, E-V-E-R that's why do not be shocked at all if the "First Catch Winner" rule apply.

We can simply suspect that the droprate is indeed dynamic but may be localized to the pool itself... To get an idea, do you see at Booty Bay contest when after a while the pools do not repop ? That's because the existing pools are still intact but suddenly at X time, there is no new one. Well get that idea, now they can reuse it, and each 5 minutes for example the new pools that appear have an increased droprate, but the old ones eventually would remain with the same droprate....
Why ? Because for me the pool is a mob, ok ? With a preset loot. When you enter a raid instance, the loot of each bosses (and each mob) is alrdy set. That's the same thing.
So you would be very wrong, to actually fish an old pool. Meaning that (again if my theory is right), it would be debatable either fish in an area with a few people but not too many, or a total desert sector. I cant figure out myself which is better.
But the mechanics might be that.

el wrote:

My theory is that a certain number of casts are required before there is a chance to catch the Shark. So, for example, the probability of catching is 0 until you have 40 casts. I also don't know if that would be influenced by switching pool types. Or perhaps it is based on a count of Suckerfish?

And this is totally absurd. Sorry dude :x As I said look at a pool as being a mob lootable by multiple characters, to have the right to loot it, you need to fish it. The absurdity come from the fact that Blizzard wouldn't allow such technology since in short you are saying "if you have not fished 40 fishs, you have no right to win"... They have never used such methods " mr x is a bad dude, so we will make sure he can't loot the thing he wants", this doesn't exist and never will.
For booty bay, it's 40 fish, but it's clear for everybody, if they wanted to use that rule again it wouldn't be one shark. Besides only YOU know you looted 40 fishs, blizzard will not monitor that kind of things to influence what you loot. I think I've covered it all.

Bottom line, if the dynamic droprate verify you have better chance fishing in "fresh" pools. And if by all mighty god you encounter a fishing pool from 30 minutes ago you may very well be inside thoses with the 1/10000 droprate.

But again, before being proven wrong, I still think it might be a "First Catch Winner" rule.

And last thing but not least, whatever is the real rule. The impact of number of fish you loot is negligeable. It's a rand based on the number of people running the contest. If you have looted the most fish, you might get only in 5% better shape than others, but the 95% rest is the rand. So on 100 people, you would need to
1- Fish the most fish
2- Rand 96 97 98 99 or 100
To win.

Which makes it more difficult that the booty bay contest, since that latter one have only the First point valid.

Sorry if my post was too long.

El managed to win her first contest, which earnt me a tell "beaten by El - I can live with that" - which made me smile. Full details soonish. The quest/turn-in system is precisely the same as the Booty Bay contest. There are also now announcements.

I took just over 50 catches to win. Other people I've spoken to required at least that number. My theory is that a certain number of casts are required before there is a chance to catch the Shark. So, for example, the probability of catching is 0 until you have 40 casts. I also don't know if that would be influenced by switching pool types. Or perhaps it is based on a count of Suckerfish?

In short, it would be very useful to get information from people here about how many casts into which pools, and/or catches of what fish it took to get your Shark.

So in all, 5 people (including the person trying to win)

He won.

You don't need massive raid groups for it.

This is complete and utter "QQing" on my part, so feel free to disregard.

I will never be able to win the Extravaganza, at least not with my current job (which I don't see quitting anytime soon).

I NEVER get Sundays off, and I work graveyard shift. Moreover, my job is in the direct-care field. Meaning not only does it suck to go to work with not enough sleep (as it would with any job), it is DANGEROUS. How am I supposed to explain to a patient that I accidentally injured them while attempting to treat their wounds or assist with their rehab because I was sleepy due to being awake at 2pm (which is like 2*am* to me) trying to win a computerized fishing contest?

I really, really wanted to get the Salty title for one of my toons, but I just don't see it happening. And it sucks to know that the only thing keeping me from it is the timing of the event.

Personally I would rather see them replace the contest requirement for "Salty" with a few of the rare catches that AREN'T part of the achievement. Heck, I WANT a reason to fish for the Giant Sewer Rat, and it'd be interesting to make people catch Old Crafty AND Old Ironjaw! Hanging out in an enemy city long enough to actually catch the one that isn't "yours" shows dedication to the sport, no?

Actually I was kinda irritated to learn Old Ironjaw WASN'T part of the title, AFTER I'd caught him (and it took forever, as you can imagine).

Ah well. I'm really bummed to know that I'll never get that title despite my love for fishing and all the work I've put into it, but I suppose Blizz has to do what Bzlizz has to do.

*shrugs*

Really, this achievement is only dictated by luck if you let it. Some social engineering will get you this title. I won this achievement 2 weeks in a row, for the rod and the trinket...and this was back in the day when raids of 40+ ally would camp it. So I am tired of hearing people on this board cry about RNG and luck. You make your own luck in this game. It was no luck that my 1st 2 weeks doing this that I got it both times.

1) Pick a side/path and keep to it. Practice your route before the contest, as all the pools are in the same place, just replaced by Tastyfish.

2) Get about 10-15 friends to come with you. Offer to pay them each 100g or so for their 40 min of time. Trust me, this is how I won my 1st two weeks doing this achievement.

3) Send 2 groups of 3-4 roaming every coast, killing every ally they find. This is your gank group. It will immediately weed out some of your competition.

4) Keep 2 with you as bodyguards. Never stop to help them kill someone, always fish. Have a pally be 1 of your bodyguards, for mount increase speed aura.

5) Send 1 group of 2 people as your "spotters". They run up and down and spot pools for you. It is best if they are male tauren. If any ally come by, kill them. If any horde come by, get your 2 tauren friends in the water, jumping up and down, making it near impossible to click on the catch for the competitor.

6) Carry Elixir of Water Walking with you so you can easily cross any water obstructions and easily maneuver to get any pool. Or have a DK be one of your bodyguards.

7) Lastly, don't bother with setting your stone to BB. Have a summon team consisting of a Warlock and 2 friends be ready right @ the turn in. Not only do summons have no cast time, but it will put you closer to the turn in. This contest is ALL about using every last second. When you are at around 35 tastyfish, have them summon you, so that the absolute second you get all 40, you can click accept on your summon and turn it in.

Thats about it. You follow those 7 rules exactly and I promise you, you will win whenever you want to win. You may think that some of my tactics are semi-dick moves. But hey, I have been known to go to STV and win the contest weeks in a row for no better reason than to stop people from getting their achievement. :-D

So, after winning this contest way back when it started on my warlock, on the second week, I have since changed to a DK, and let me tell ya, bad luck is really getting me down.

I got everything else for my new Salty title pretty easy and quickly (Pinchy droipped in 24 casts, vs 18 months of fishing last time)

But every week I end up at 38-39 when the winner gets anounced. so depressing. Half the time it's because I get a yellowtail 2-3 times in a row and done.

Oh well, here's hoping for next week. Cause I must do this achievement vs the enw one, because I must have the fishing rod!

I hope they end up moving the elder to the underbelly--having the quest giver closest to a neutral inn would be more fair, and the underbelly would have less lag.

Stick him on one of the wooden pillars down by the fishing spot, that should solve the mammoth problem as well.

I find it realy strange that they put him much closer to a alliance inn than a horde/neutral inn.. aldo i'm alliance i still don't think its fair. unless the catch is so rare it dousn't matter that you have 10/30 sec disadvantage.

The Elder's Tuskarr-like size could very well prevent players from blocking him. I think you'd need at least a mammoth to block him and even then some part of his model might stick out of a mammoth's model.

In any case, nothing stops you from enabling name plates in this situation. You can right-click name plates just like you can right-click the actual NPC. That way a player blocking Elder Clearwater doesn't impact your gameplay negatively - other than forcing you to briefly enable name plates. The default keyboard shortcut is - correct me if I'm wrong - Ctrl+V, Shift+V or just V. Something along those lines.

As for his position, yesterday's fishing derby on the test realm had him spawn next to Marcia Chase at the fountain in Dalaran's Eventide district. He spawned at 8 p.m. server time, announced the derby's end at 9 p.m. and (presumably, since I didn't stay to witness it in person) disappeared at 10 p.m. The Kalu'ak Fishing Derby article has this info and more.

So where is the Elder stationed in Dalaran? Is there anything to keep jerks from Mammoth-blocking him?
