After more attempts than I care to remember, I finally took second in the STV contest last Sunday. (And thanks to El's site for all the great info and strategy tips. Now, only the Lurker stands between me and the Salty title.)

Obviously, I dinged the "Master Angler of Azeroth" as soon as I turned in my Tastyfish, but what puzzles me is that I saw at least 4 more people earn that achievement in the chat window after me. Any ideas on what was happening there? Shouldn't only three anglers earn that on my server per week?

Thanks!

I've never posted on wow-related forums before but I just had to share what I just experienced.
As stated by El in the info portion of the STV contest it is theoretically possible to place first, second and third in the fishing contest. I can confirm that this can be done, as I've done just that today.
I've been trying to place in the contest for a while now, on and off during the years I've been playing, but always just came up short. After enough frustration I haven't entered in over a year.
But the recent changes to fishing got me fired up to try again. This time I figured I should be methodical about it. Realizing from the great tips and tricks posted by El I gathered that speed and increasing your chances by avoiding competition is crucial.
So I planned ahead when to enter the contest. Today, april 7th, was the last day of the Noblegarden event,on top of that the Darkmoon Faire had just rolled into town. So I figured people would be either busy wrapped up in a chocolate egg frenzy or putting in hours at the faire.
I set up at the sagefish pools in the river inland in Northern Stranglethorn. Even though there was a lot of cross-realm fishermen along the coast, barely anyone fished the river, so that might be a place you want to check out if you enter the contest. Handed in my first stacks of tastyfish 14 mins after the contest start. After standing around for a few mins of joy I realised the contest was still on and decided to try for a rare catch. Needless to say, no one but me was fishing on my realm, I just kept going and got 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
This is not meant to toot my own horn as a lot of luck was involved ( wellll, maybe a little toot) but the tip I would give others with trouble placing in the contest is that picking the date you decide to compete on might severly boost your chances in getting a good result. So keep an eye on those world events and enter when others are busy elswhere!

All in all this netted me:
Dread Pirate Ring
Boots of the bay
High test eternium fishing line

I also managed to reel in Keefer's anglefish and Brownell's blue striped racer, rewarded with Lucky fishing hat and Nat Pagle's extreme anglin boots

So remember to work ALL the angles when anglin' , you just might get lucky!

On Silver Hand (and it's CRZ partners), the fishing tourney did not start at 2pm pacific like it was supposed to. It's still listed on the calendar as 2pm. I'm assuming the Daylight Savings Time change messed it up. Here's to hoping it starts at 3. Anyone else having issues today?

Hey all

This will only really help the US players, but it's better than nothing I guess.

It appears that Blizzard have forgot to add the zonewide shout, announcing the beginning and the winner of the Fishing Extravaganza, to Northern Stranglethorn Vale.

I guess it's a bug on Blizzards end, so if you're doing the Fishing Extravaganza today, make sure you stick to the Cape of Stranglethorn.

Entered contest on Duskwood. Was late so hadn't set hearthstone and only took second. Looted Dread Pirate Ring. Kept fishing as always to try and get rares. Fished up another 40, noticed with disbelief that no one had taken third.

Flew back, expecting another winner announce the whole time, and won the fishing line. So in one contest won second AND third place (assuming others gave up after first winner -- they must not have researched new rules -- but I also didn't check to see if they were from my server).

There were dozens of characters from other servers clustered around the turn in, chirping about whether or not someone had won. They couldn't turn in ahead of me, so Blizz did this right.

NOTE: only 2 prizes were offered to me as choices when I turned in for 2nd place and only 1 when I turned in for 3rd. So either there are three prizes and it's first come first serve, or I was only offered prizes I had never looted before. Guessing it was the former (three unique choices offered and you loot your choice in the order you win).

Finally... now have every piece of fishing gear (including Pandaren lure, exalted with Nat) -- fishing skill 600 + 220. Still irritated that Exalted with Nat gave a hat that replaced old one instead of a new slot like my forum-posted idea for "Bog Waders" or something that added to the gear instead.

Still wish exalted with Nat earned me the reward title Druantis the Master Baiter.

Thanks again for the much appreciated crowdresourcing advice to El and all the posters (hey I just coined some more jargon).

On test realms, it looked like the new-and-improved Stranglethorn contest was intended to run at 14:00 PST (Pacific) regardless of the native timezone of the realm. Crude, but that prevents the worst of the CRZ issues. I expect this to convert into a region-specific schedule, eg all US realms run the contest at the same (physical world) time - such as 14:00 PST. Sadly it won't be obvious for EU servers, since all of those are at CET.

So, could someone who plays on a set of differently timezoned US realms please check the time the Booty Bay contest is scheduled for on each and report back? The equivalent realm time should be displayed on the calendar. Thanks in advance.

As of today, on the PTR:

At 12:00 Fishbot 5000 and Jang appear in Booty Bay. Fishbot has its old 3 quests for rares. Pools in the Cape and Northern Stranglethorn switch to a roughly equal mix of School of Tastyfish and "Mixed Ocean School". Pools appear 2 hours too early, allowing contest fish to be caught prior to the the contest starting.

Mixed Ocean School always contains a pair of catches. Their contents are broadly the same as 1 School of Tastyfish combined with 1 average pre-contest pool (broadly the average of a Firefin, Oily Blackmouth and Wreckage pool). Those double catches are quirky, although not explicitly broken.

There are a few rogue "Waterlogged Wreckage" pools in Northern Stranglethorn which contain double catches (similar to Mixed Ocean School), but are visibly still debris floating in the water.

Pools are sometimes spawning on top of one another - a bug that used to happen years ago during contests. It is possible to fish from both a School of Tastyfish and a Mixed Ocean School on the same spot at the same time.

Hard to be sure, but it appears that only School of Tastyfish respawn after 12:00. Mixed Ocean School may not respawn at all after they first appear at 12:00 in the Cape, although I have now seen one respawn in Northern Stranglethorn.

At 14:00 precisely nothing happens. Riggle Bassbait is still not visible. There is no start yell in Booty Bay. No NPC accepts a winning 40 Tastyfish. Jang continues to act as if there has been no winner (offering no quest).

In summary, the scripting of this event is totally broken, rendering the contest largely dysfunctional.

If someone with US forum access could post that on the US PTR bug forums, please do so.

The change to the Master Angler of Azeroth achievement criteria (now 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in the Booty Bay contest only) cannot be tested. Note that the Kal'uak contest is not currently available.

Lightwell on "Pro Tip: Hotbar setup and testing"

The bad omen from my first cast came back to haunt me -- I had shuffled my Fishing hotbar around, so I had my Goblin's Rocket Jump too close to my Fishing button. On my first cast, I landed in the ocean, and spent 10-15 seconds swimming back. I thought to myself, "I should probably change that."

At that point, having botched my first cast, I gave up on winning. Fish on, though, right? I still don't have the hat, boots, or line on that character.

And yet, 13 minutes in, there I was on my way to my 5th STV Fishing Derby win. The fish were biting like mad, and there wasn't another soul around as far as the eye could see. I still had my doubts on winning. though -- I was already at 35 Tastyfish, but I also had 15 trash fish -- Blackmouths, Snappers, and even a handful of Eels. I had even started constructing a nice centerpiece for my dining room table from all the Stranglekelp in my bag.

While the fish were biting, I was also pulling up anything and everything else.

Somehow...40. Nobody's been crowned yet? What what? Hearth!

As soon as I popped, I saw a Worgen Druid about 3 feet ahead of me, running like crazy. I took off, and scrambled to hit my Swiftness Potion, so I could zoom past him.

And that's when I realized I was flying, zooming past not just Mr. Druid, but also right past Riggle Bassbait, and...right past the rest of the platform we were all on. I had only been in the water for about a second before the Druid won.

My tip to you -- after you've got your hotbar set up, try to fat-finger the keys a bit, and see if anything's amiss. And if you do find something off, change it right away, instead of thinking "I should probably change that." Yeah, the tip is standard for raiding hotbar setups, but I had never once pondered it for fishing.

I guess the silver lining in all of this is that after looking at the Druid's profile, it had been 14 months since his last Salty achievement, and the contest was the last one he needed. That's probably a little more important than just some fool who wants his 5th Arcanite Pole.

I've never been one to brag about fishing, except to poke fun at fellow guild members. They dared me to post my recent win here, so here goes.

In the past year and a half, I've won the extravaganza on 3 different characters, all of which were 80 and 300+ base fishing skill. I'm on the backwater server: The Venture Co.

My fishing grounds are the east coast. I start as far north as possible and work my way to the south. I turn back north when I meet competition or run out of pools. I don't use potions or lures.

You want to know the real key (as has probably been stated here before): Always be 100% sure that your cast is in the pool. If not, recast.
====================================

So, I was going to help a guildie out sunday for the fishing tourney. Play a little defense on my warlock while spotting pools, competition, etc. Well, damn, he no shows.

On a lark, I had picked up a fishing pole and tried the ghostfish daily (and succeeded) a few days before. Thanks to the 3.3 changes, I was successful.

Lightbulb! Let's go for it. Fish on! I quickly set my hearth and off I went. I was an extremely sleepy STV this past sunday. I counted 3 80s on the alliance side. I was hoping for the same from the Horde. My fishing skill is... 27! I just made it to the north end of the east coast as the tourney starts...

I employed the same strategy as I note above. The only thing I really missed, was Find Fish! I managed to keep a pretty good pace. I didn't think i had it, due to catching 10 'crap' fish (blackmouth, stoneskin, etc). I even caught [Brownell's Blue Striped Racer]!

I managed to pull the 40th out around 20 minutes into the tourney. A quick hearth and WIN!

I'm sure there are doubters out there.
Feel free to check out my fishing achievements.
My alts name is: Vett
on the US server: The Venture Co

Last Sunday and This Sunday/Saturday, I tried the STV competition for the first time, altogether twice, and the Derby once, for the first time. This is on a Normal server, and I am an Undead Frost DK with Find Fish, +5 Fishing Boots and a +5 Rod.

Last Sunday, I started in the northern STV area and stayed around that area, catching 24 Tastyfish before the inevitable announcement of the Master Angler took place. I was discouraged, but knew that I would get better. I blamed it on the poor aim of the Lure.

This Saturday, I tried the Fishing Derby. I started in the Heart of the River in Sholazar Basin, and met with a Blood Elf. We half-grouped together, she buffed me with battle buffs and I buffed her with Path of Frost. Kind of an unfair trade considering the battle buffs will help me in no way, but whatever. Anyways, I see a pair of people come along, one of them a dwarf. The dwarf fishes the pools I am at, and I think, 'Damn douchebag.' But hey, it's a competition and I can't really blame him. The contest begins, and there are no pools to fish so I fly up the river(s) quickly and within the first 10 minutes the winner is announced, I have only fished about 3 or 4 pools and caught about 8 Pygmy Suckerfish. I am discouraged.

Today (Sunday), I tried the competition again with a better feeling of winning, as I am in a good spot and I see no people around the pool. I spot a few people coming in with mounts and there is a Night Elf slightly above the area that I was planning on heading. How dare him! >:[ So the contest begins and suddenly the pools disappear, I wasn't sure if they disappeared or not but soon enough I found more pools. There are just WAY. TOO. MANY. PEOPLE. FISHING. I mean god, there are always at the least 1 person fishing at a pool, only twice in the contest I found a lone pool. Again the Master Angler is announced, with the same unlucky number as the last one, twenty-four tastyfish.

That is where YOU come in! You tell me about all your tips and tricks, lend me a hand, and I could within the next 6 weeks win the STV Fishing Extravaganza (Or the Fishing Derby, really want that Arcanite Rod though)! I hope I do win within the next 6 weeks at least, since Booty Bay is getting screwed I don't think the contest will exist anymore and there goes my chance to get the best fishing rod EVAR (as of now). I already know all the tips listed on the STV Contest Strategy page.

Today I caught a lot of Oily Blackmouth and Firefin Snapper in the Tastyfish pools. There has been speculation of pool "overlaying", e.g. an Oily Blackmouth and Tastyfish pools at the same location. I've seen this give 12 fish (half each species), but today I got the "standard" six fish. Most pools were OK, but about 1/5 of the pools started giving "lesser desired" fish about 1/3 of the time. Seemed to occur during the tourney too, but at a lesser rate.

I did drop from a +100 lure to a +75 lure after the tourney. So I was down to (525 skill + 120 buffs) 645 skill level from 670 during the tourney. At the end, one pool was 3 Firefin, 1 Strangekelp, and 2 Tastyfish.

I also noticed people abandoning pools without fishing them completely out.

Did something change over the last 3 months? I've been unable to do the tourney on SUNs for awhile.

I caught the Blacktip Shark and was FIRST!

:D

Long story short, had a good friend at Dalaran on constant summon/cancel and me fishing in the Frozen Sea. 10 minutes in, I hit the Blacktip Shark and I even EXPECTED it at around 10 minutes. Yelled "I got it I got it go go go!" in vent and there was a port 2 seconds later.

Boom. Winner!! :D I am sooo happy! Now my next hunt is for the Dark Herring. :D

edit: I caught 24 Deep Sea Monsterbelly, 1 Crystallized Water, 2 Crates and 1 Blacktip Shark. There were 17 Pygmy Suckerfish in total.

There are a lot of posts about this on offical wow-forums so i thought i'd make one here too.

A lot of people want the STV-achievement deleted from the Salty-title because its totally not what fishing is all about. And they are totally right in my opinion
And no, i'm not lazy. I have caught Ironjaw, Crafty, Mr Pinchy twice and doing the [The One That Didn't Get Away] now.

But the thing is: 52 sundays a year, let's say about 40 times that you can actually join and about 50-100 people joining every week (on my server).
That means if you join every week you should win after about 2 years and all fishers that caught one or more rare fish know that you can be lucky which can make you win in one try or very unlucky which could make you fish for 4 years without ever wining.
Other people have to work on sunday-afternoons and can never win the Salty title, and dont give me that shit: 'yea but people that want raid-achievements have to be online on raid-times too' because if you dont like the raiding-hours of your guild, just join another one that has good times.
And NO (again) the problem is NOT that these people dont want to use a lot of time for the achievements.

All other fishing achievements can be done by just fishing alot and in prolly a month (thats a long time) you can catch all the other rare fish(wotlk not included, dont know the catch rates).

My idea's are:
Make the Stv-tournament happen more then once per week, because its just silly that it's only on one hour and only 52 times per year.

or

Delete the stv-tournament from the Salty-title and make a seperate title like: Master Angler, or something.

If people say that it's too easy now: add Crafty, Ironjaw, Giant Rat.

No, i didn't win the tournament yet.

Please, tell me your opinion about this.

Ps: all the threads on official forums have been totally ignored, just as my gm post about it.

I just turned in a Blacktip Shark. Sadly I wasn't first.

However, I can confirm that the consolation quest "Better Luck Next Time" does give some Kalu'ak rep. Very little though: it was 172 for me, and thats with +5% from a guild perk, and using a human character.

My Kalu'ak rep was at 0 in the Neutral section before this. I doubt there would have been more rep gained from this if I had been in a different rep category but I'm putting this here in case.

If the rep bonuses work together like I think they do (i.e. totalling 15%), that'd mean the regular rep gain is 150.
I did:
172 ÷ 1.15 = 149.5652....
so I checked
150 x 1.15 and got 172.5. So I think my calculation works.

TL;DR version:
The consolation quest "Better Luck Next Time" for turning in a Blacktip Shark after someone else wins gives 150 Kalu'ak rep.

Thought I'd start a topic for all those of us who are trying desperately to win the Tournament, so we can commiserate and share tips...

I've been trying to win the Tournament for 5 weeks now. Every Sunday, I mumble an excuse to my girlfriend to become intensely busy for 60 minutes (including prep time.) Each time so far, I've had to stone to BB and then do the "walk of shame" of going back to Grom'gol, taking the Zeppelin to Org, then the Zep to Warsong Hold, then the long Flightpath to Dalaran... Sigh.

Anyway, what's even more frustrating/exciting is that I'm getting REALLY close now. Over the last 3 weeks, I've scored 37, 37 and 38 when the winner was announced. What a pulse-pounding finish...

Last week, I tweaked my strategy a bit:

- Tried to go to the island at the northwest... Found it already taken by 2 people, decided against it.

- As a result, I went to the west coast of STV (I previously fished at the east side.)

- I also decided NOT to fight others for the pools... When someone came by my pool, I finished fishing, fished another one if I had just started, then moved on. This was to avoid having 2 people run together looking for pools.

- I also avoided fishing in someone else's pool.

My 38 doesn't tell the whole story... I was actually very unlucky with my catches, AND fought too long with a pool that was poorly placed... Also, near Grom'gol, I had a LOT more people than down east, and still pulled in 38, which is amazing. I feel that with a little luck, I would have gotten this.

So, my advice:

- Make sure you set your Hearthstone to BB (just in case this wasn't painfully obvious by now.)

- I don't think either the east or west side is better... Both seemed relatively similar.

- DON'T fight for pools. Just move on when someone gets to yours, so you can get the next pool by yourself.

Still, I'm not a winner... yet!
