There has been speculation of pool "overlaying", e.g. an Oily Blackmouth and Tastyfish pools at the same location. I've seen this give 12 fish (half each species), but today I got the "standard" six fish. Most pools were OK, but about 1/5 of the pools started giving "lesser desired" fish about 1/3 of the time. Seemed to occur during the tourney too, but at a lesser rate.</p> <p>I did drop from a +100 lure to a +75 lure after the tourney. So I was down to (525 skill + 120 buffs) 645 skill level from 670 during the tourney. At the end, one pool was 3 Firefin, 1 Strangekelp, and 2 Tastyfish.</p> <p>I also noticed people abandoning pools without fishing them completely out.</p> <p>Did something change over the last 3 months? Yelled "I got it I got it go go go!" in vent and there was a port 2 seconds later.</p> <p>Boom. Winner!! :D I am sooo happy! I doubt there would have been more rep gained from this if I had been in a different rep category but I'm putting this here in case.</p> <p>If the rep bonuses work together like I think they do (i.e. totalling 15%), that'd mean the regular rep gain is 150.<br /> I did:<br /> 172 ÷ 1.15 = 149.5652....<br /> so I checked<br /> 150 x 1.15 and got 172.5. Every Sunday, I mumble an excuse to my girlfriend to become intensely busy for 60 minutes (including prep time.) Each time so far, I've had to stone to BB and then do the "walk of shame" of going back to Grom'gol, taking the Zeppelin to Org, then the Zep to Warsong Hold, then the long Flightpath to Dalaran... Sigh.</p> <p>Anyway, what's even more frustrating/exciting is that I'm getting REALLY close now. Over the last 3 weeks, I've scored 37, 37 and 38 when the winner was announced. What a pulse-pounding finish...</p> <p>Last week, I tweaked my strategy a bit:</p> <p>- Tried to go to the island at the northwest... Found it already taken by 2 people, decided against it.</p> <p>- As a result, I went to the west coast of STV (I previously fished at the east side.)</p> <p>- I also decided NOT to fight others for the pools... When someone came by my pool, I finished fishing, fished another one if I had just started, then moved on. This was to avoid having 2 people run together looking for pools.</p> <p>- I also avoided fishing in someone else's pool.</p> <p>My 38 doesn't tell the whole story... I was actually very unlucky with my catches, AND fought too long with a pool that was poorly placed... Also, near Grom'gol, I had a LOT more people than down east, and still pulled in 38, which is amazing. I feel that with a little luck, I would have gotten this.</p> <p>So, my advice:</p> <p>- Make sure you set your Hearthstone to BB (just in case this wasn't painfully obvious by now.)</p> <p>- I don't think either the east or west side is better... Both seemed relatively similar.</p> <p>- DON'T fight for pools. You're <strong>phased</strong> in that quest. That means the STV you're looking for pools in isn't the same as the STV everybody else is fishing in. And naturally there aren't any pools in the Bwemba phase. Keep in mind, this was my first attempt at the Derby.</p> <p>Later that day I snagged up Mr. Pinchy, and The One that didn't get away with the Dark Herring.</p> <p>Just 1 more Daily to go til I get my title, and I've only really spent 2 weeks working on it... After seeing THE SAME guy win on our realm several weeks in a row for the Kalu'ak contest, it occured to me that there had to be some way to maximize your chances to fish up the shark.</p> <p>Well, it turns out that the answer is much easier than you may imagine. After finally getting to talk to this person, who ignored me for a period of a few months when I asked, they finally capitulated and here it was:</p> <p>Do not fish in pools. </p> <p>You'd think that this was counter-intuitive, but it's really not. Yes, you "always" catch pygmie suckerfish from pools, but you also have to spend time making sure that your cast is in the pool (recasts are costly time losses), deal with other people ninja'ing your pools, and moving from pool to pool. You can also get unlucky with pool respawn and wind up flying around for several minutes looking for another to fish in.</p> <p>As we know, the shark can be caught from "any waters that yield pygmie suckerfish". Well, it so happens that there are waters that you can catch pygmie suckerfish from WITHOUT fishing in pools. So, in my endeavor to finally get the salty title, I went and fished in Sholazar Basin in River's Heart. Sure enough, the usual crowd of fishers were zipping around fishing in pools, and I just sat on the bank and fished in the lake. I got the shark in 4 minutes, had it back to the Elder barely past the 5 minute mark.</p> <p>Since we don't know the mechanics of what makes the shark drop, it's hard to say for sure why this method may be better, however, we do know these basic facts:</p> <p>Fishing from open water is faster<br /> Fishing from open water doesn't require time-costing recasts<br /> Fishing from open water can't be ninja'd by other fishers<br /> Fishing from open water can't be obstructed by players' mounts<br /> Fishing from open water IS, in some way, affected by fishing skill</p> <p>Take that and run with it, fellows. All I know now is that 6 of the last Kalu'ak fishing derbies have been won using this exact method on my server (5 from the one guy, and today from me). I was discouraged, but knew that I would get better. I blamed it on the poor aim of the Lure.</p> <p>This Saturday, I tried the Fishing Derby. I started in the Heart of the River in Sholazar Basin, and met with a Blood Elf. We half-grouped together, she buffed me with battle buffs and I buffed her with Path of Frost. Kind of an unfair trade considering the battle buffs will help me in no way, but whatever. Anyways, I see a pair of people come along, one of them a dwarf. The dwarf fishes the pools I am at, and I think, 'Damn douchebag.' But hey, it's a competition and I can't really blame him. The contest begins, and there are no pools to fish so I fly up the river(s) quickly and within the first 10 minutes the winner is announced, I have only fished about 3 or 4 pools and caught about 8 Pygmy Suckerfish. I am discouraged.</p> <p>Today (Sunday), I tried the competition again with a better feeling of winning, as I am in a good spot and I see no people around the pool. I spot a few people coming in with mounts and there is a Night Elf slightly above the area that I was planning on heading. How dare him! &gt;:[ So the contest begins and suddenly the pools disappear, I wasn't sure if they disappeared or not but soon enough I found more pools. There are just WAY. TOO. MANY. PEOPLE. FISHING. I mean god, there are always at the least 1 person fishing at a pool, only twice in the contest I found a lone pool. Again the Master Angler is announced, with the same unlucky number as the last one, twenty-four tastyfish.</p> <p>That is where YOU come in! Now I play on Dark Iron, meaning pvp is a hassle. </p> <p>What I've started to notice is that I get the hat every tournament. I've got the eternium line once.</p> <p>The hat I normally get around my 125-150th successful catch. The one time I got the line, it was around 225 (I also got the hat around 140 that tourny)</p> <p>Now its been really hard to get over 200 catches in 2 hours on the pvp server cause of the mass slaughter.</p> <p>I'm wondering if the 1/200, 1/100 successful catch ratio is right, but you always get the hat first, then the line, then the boots? So you would need to get over 300 catches for the boots.</p> <p>The one thing that through the # catches for a loop was my first tourny, I caught the fish for the hat on my very first cast.
