so today was my first win. it's very exciting to finally be able to turn into an ugly fish. anyways, i contribute most of my win to luck. i woke up from a nap right before the contest started and just decided to give it a try even though i didn't think i'd get there in time. i also had no trouble with griefers on either faction, though i did spot a well-known alliance griefer before the contest while i was in Booty Bay. but a good portion of my win was thanks to good strategy. most of that strategy can be found on this page. i'm here to reiterate some of that knowledge and hopefully get you guys a step closer to that Salty title

1. Find Fish
it's common sense but i had "find fish" on, so i could see the pools of tastyfish on my minimap. if you don't have it already, you can find more info on that here

2. Get There Early
got there early enough to set my hearth to Booty Bay and waited out on the coast for the contest to begin. depending on where your hearth is, about 1:40-1:45 server time is a good time to head down there

3. Water Walking
if you're not a shaman, collect them from fishing dailies or get an alchemist to create them for you. water walking's freedom is essential to helping you save much needed time when traveling from one pool to another. and for you priests, don't rely on levitate either. you'll need water walking specifically so you can mount up on the water

4. Stay Away From the Crowd: Where to Start
i read two very important pieces of info on this page that definitely gave me my edge. first i read that there was no real place to start fishing, though the person who wrote the guide suggested starting in the center of the western coast. so i did that and i didn't run into people for a good ten minutes. it makes sense, most people would start at one edge of the coast and work their way towards the other. and when they do that, they're busy dealing with the crowd taking their tastyfish

5. Stay Away From the Crowd: Do the Opposite
the other important piece of info i read was "You must learn to adapt to what other anglers are doing, and normally do the opposite." this tip may have been the one that gave me my win. in the past, i would fish anywhere. if three people were trying to grab fish from a pool, i'd jump in. i mean, any piece of fish is worth fishing for, right? wrong. if you're spending your entire time competing for pools of fish, then you're wasting your time. the more people fishing out of one pool drains that pool faster and forces you to travel more often than you should. stay away from the crowd. when i saw a group of people coming at me from one direction, i'd try to stay ahead of them, or i would run towards them and look for pools of respawned fish

6. Research Beforehand! Know What You Want
i didn't have trouble with this but i thought i'd share the tip anyways. once you've gotten your fish and you're ready to turn it in, choose your reward and complete the quest as soon as possible. i've read stories about people trying to figure out which prize they want as another person snuck up behind them and took first prize for themselves. it's common sense but definitely something to keep in mind

well, i slept through yesterday's Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, so i'll give it a try next week. if i win, then that means i'm doing something right and i'll be back here to start a thread on it. see you guys, and happy fishing!

I've never been one to brag about fishing, except to poke fun at fellow guild members. They dared me to post my recent win here, so here goes.

In the past year and a half, I've won the extravaganza on 3 different characters, all of which were 80 and 300+ base fishing skill. I'm on the backwater server: The Venture Co.

My fishing grounds are the east coast. I start as far north as possible and work my way to the south. I turn back north when I meet competition or run out of pools. I don't use potions or lures.

You want to know the real key (as has probably been stated here before): Always be 100% sure that your cast is in the pool. If not, recast.
====================================

So, I was going to help a guildie out sunday for the fishing tourney. Play a little defense on my warlock while spotting pools, competition, etc. Well, damn, he no shows.

On a lark, I had picked up a fishing pole and tried the ghostfish daily (and succeeded) a few days before. Thanks to the 3.3 changes, I was successful.

Lightbulb! Let's go for it. Fish on! I quickly set my hearth and off I went. I was an extremely sleepy STV this past sunday. I counted 3 80s on the alliance side. I was hoping for the same from the Horde. My fishing skill is... 27! I just made it to the north end of the east coast as the tourney starts...

I employed the same strategy as I note above. The only thing I really missed, was Find Fish! I managed to keep a pretty good pace. I didn't think i had it, due to catching 10 'crap' fish (blackmouth, stoneskin, etc). I even caught [Brownell's Blue Striped Racer]!

I managed to pull the 40th out around 20 minutes into the tourney. A quick hearth and WIN!

I'm sure there are doubters out there.
Feel free to check out my fishing achievements.
My alts name is: Vett
on the US server: The Venture Co

If you win the stranglethorn extravaganza, which reward would you take? and why?

i would take the trinket since +fishing doesnt really mean anything now. Also turning into a fish is always nice :)

There are a lot of posts about this on offical wow-forums so i thought i'd make one here too.

A lot of people want the STV-achievement deleted from the Salty-title because its totally not what fishing is all about. And they are totally right in my opinion
And no, i'm not lazy. I have caught Ironjaw, Crafty, Mr Pinchy twice and doing the [The One That Didn't Get Away] now.

But the thing is: 52 sundays a year, let's say about 40 times that you can actually join and about 50-100 people joining every week (on my server).
That means if you join every week you should win after about 2 years and all fishers that caught one or more rare fish know that you can be lucky which can make you win in one try or very unlucky which could make you fish for 4 years without ever wining.
Other people have to work on sunday-afternoons and can never win the Salty title, and dont give me that shit: 'yea but people that want raid-achievements have to be online on raid-times too' because if you dont like the raiding-hours of your guild, just join another one that has good times.
And NO (again) the problem is NOT that these people dont want to use a lot of time for the achievements.

All other fishing achievements can be done by just fishing alot and in prolly a month (thats a long time) you can catch all the other rare fish(wotlk not included, dont know the catch rates).

My idea's are:
Make the Stv-tournament happen more then once per week, because its just silly that it's only on one hour and only 52 times per year.

or

Delete the stv-tournament from the Salty-title and make a seperate title like: Master Angler, or something.

If people say that it's too easy now: add Crafty, Ironjaw, Giant Rat.

No, i didn't win the tournament yet.

Please, tell me your opinion about this.

Ps: all the threads on official forums have been totally ignored, just as my gm post about it.

I don't think its mentioned in anyone's strats, but having a Swiftness of Zanza elixir (requires Revered with Zandalar Tribe) is a real advantage (moreso for the STV tourney, as luck has less to do with winning in that one). It's +20% runspeed for 2 hours.

Been lurking here for a while but i thought i'd share my thoughts on the Kalu'ak Derby.
Okay so after having no luck with the Fishing Lottery- I mean Derby so far (I haven't caught a single shark and fished the full hour in every contest so far^^) I've been looking at a few ways one COULD increase their chances of winning.

A few factors that can affect chances of winning:
How close are the pools you're fishing?
How many other people are fishing those pools?

These are the first two which spring to mind. But how about these:
How far apart are everyone else's fishing pools?
How MANY FISH are in their pools? ; )

These last two are of interest to us because we CAN control them.
How? Well although it involves spending a good few hours beforehand for relatively small gain, some form of "preparation" is possible. I've noted that people tend to stop fishing pools as much a couple of hours before the contest starts. Starting last week i have begun "forcing" pools into a close group. In Grizzly Hills I succeeded (after a good half hour) Of emptying most of the southern Imperial Manta Ray pools and filling most of the eastern ray schools.

However, this week i'm going to try something else: fishing as many pools as i can to reduce the number of fish in each pool (apart from mine on the east coast : P) Effectively all one does is fish 2-3 catches out of each pool so that only 1 or 2 fish remain in each pool. The theory being that competitors will take longer travelling between useless pools while I catch the shark and win : D Obviously it's gonna take some time to go around every pool in Northrend, and sure some lucky randomer with a fishing skill of 23 may still get it on his first catch, but it has to help SOMEHOW!

I'm not sure if some will view this as cheating, but I for one think this is perfectly acceptable : )

What do you guys think? Too much effort for too little gain?

Also still wearing max fishing gear out of paranoia incase the skill does have some affect on your chances. :P any proof of that yet?

Anyways thanks for reading, sorry if post is a bit lengthly. Will let you know if i end up with some nice boots or a broken computer and a sore fist!

Hi all,

I have a question for those of you who won the tournament in the past through regular means (ie: won because of a server restart, low number of competitors...etc)

I'm mainly interested in non-twinks as twinks obviously need to work much harder then level 70 toons:

- Do you use running or swimming speed potions or do you just rely on your mount to get you places?

- Do you have guildmates / other people helping you to win the tournament?

- Do you camp the same pools and patrol them until one spawns or do you just travel up or down the coast?

- Have you ever won the tournament from solely fishing at the lake and rivers outside of ZG by those venture mining company goblins?

I am interested in hearing from you and I would like to see what strategies past winners have used. Clearly it comes down to luck... where you are on the map relative to other people... spawns of the pools... etc.

Today was the day of the STV fishing contest and I was really excited and pumped up about it. I really wanted to win. So I did as many things as I could to get prepared including buying a lot of health potions, and switching my glyphs to help me escape the evil horde that killed me a few times.

The contest just began, and about 5 minutes later, the winner was announced!! I was shocked. How could somebody win this fast. Luckily the winner was Alliance, so I deiced to whisper him. At first, he wouldn't tell me what he did to win, but after a while I gained his trust. He told me that earlier that day he contacted a GM and told him that he accidentally deleted 40 Speckled Tastyfish. The GM then gave him 40 and he handed them in right at the beginning.

I was very disappointed with this and hopefully he didn't tell anymore people and give them ideas about cheating in this way! :(

-Well at least I got my lucky fishing hat :)

Finally, FINALLY I won STV today (Thorium Brotherhood realm.) I've been working on it for months, and the last four attempts I got 37, 37, 39 and 39 Tastyfish. This time *everything* went right.

My strategy is generally to park myself halfway between Grom'Gol and where the small rock outcroppings are to the south - I find a pretty good density of pools, and on my server at least most players seem to start at Booty Bay and work their way north so what pools do appear are all mine. This time when the contest started pools showed up everywhere. At one time I had four pools showing in a row on my minimap - it was faster to run to the next pool (with Aspect of the Cheetah on) than to mount up! I didn't see another soul until I was up to 35 Tastyfish. Talk about the adrenaline rush when you're up to 39 and the pool you're fishing gives out!

I already had all the other Accomplished Angler achievements except for The Scavenger, so after winning I immediately went to find Schooner and Floating Wreckage and now I'm proudly wearing the Salty title. Now I just need to fish up Old Ironjaw in Ironforge to have every single fishing achievement :)

Hi guys.

Today I won the Fishing Derby. It took me aprox 5min to catch the shark in Howling Fjord.
Details will come later. Not only did I won the tournament I also did catch the darke herring
TWICE in a row. I dont know about the % chance of that. Anyway it gained me the "Salty"
title.

I fished the derby twice today for the full hour (east and west coast realms).

I never caught a single shark but noticed some strange behavior.

Over the course of the derby, about 4 times, when I went to loot the bobber no loot window appeared. After I clicked the bobber disappeared so I'm sure I clicked it. Also, there was no "No fish are hooked" message so I know I clicked it at the right time.

After the derby was over I fished for a good 2 hours and couldn't reproduce this behavior.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed this during the derby?

I'm hoping these missing loots weren't the shark!

I just won the STV fishing contest today, and by all rights I have no idea how it happened.

* This was only my second attempt (and the first was several months ago).
* I was attacked by a crocolisk partway through, and fumbled for several seconds before I found the spell to kill him.
* 11 of my casts were just outside the edges of the Tastyfish pools and were wasted.
* My latency was constantly in the red (~1000ms).

The only explanation (though it makes it even stranger) was that there seemed to be almost no one else competing today. Yojamba Isle and all the surrounding area was completed deserted. I was fully expecting to be racing someone from the Booty Bay hearth to the turn-in, but no one seemed to be there either. Was it just the Thanksgiving weekend? Are people doing the STV contest less and less (looking forward to 3.3's Kalu'ak contest)? Or (considering that I got the Sea Turtle this past week) have I been infused with some unholy sort of luck? D:

Sorry to those thinking you were going to finish an already hard achievement, but it just got HARDER to get your title, NOT easier.

Think about for a second:
"Elder Clearwater sits in Dalaran for one hour awaiting the return of the quickest, most experienced fisher to bring him the first catch of the night."

Dalaran - the most populated overvisited city in ALL of Azeroth.

"Don't forget, in patch 3.3.0 you never catch trash from fishing pools, regardless of skill."

EVERYONE will see this tourney announcement, and EVERYONE can win it, regardless of skill. The award for doing so, a BOA +5% exp Heirloom item. What is there to stop EVERYONE from trying to win this, regardless of a meta-achievement? The Northrend tournament just got FULL folks. How many alt-playing people have you come across in your time? These people will flood the tournament with no regard for how hard the title is to get, and with little or no consideration for the meta-achievement, just to win the ring for their alts.

There will not be 104 Salty's a year now, for awhile it probably won't go much higher then 52. At least the STV tournament is out of the way, and limits the competition by fishing skill.

Triseult on "STV Extravaganza Support Group"

Thought I'd start a topic for all those of us who are trying desperately to win the Tournament, so we can commiserate and share tips...

I've been trying to win the Tournament for 5 weeks now. Every Sunday, I mumble an excuse to my girlfriend to become intensely busy for 60 minutes (including prep time.) Each time so far, I've had to stone to BB and then do the "walk of shame" of going back to Grom'gol, taking the Zeppelin to Org, then the Zep to Warsong Hold, then the long Flightpath to Dalaran... Sigh.

Anyway, what's even more frustrating/exciting is that I'm getting REALLY close now. Over the last 3 weeks, I've scored 37, 37 and 38 when the winner was announced. What a pulse-pounding finish...

Last week, I tweaked my strategy a bit:

- Tried to go to the island at the northwest... Found it already taken by 2 people, decided against it.

- As a result, I went to the west coast of STV (I previously fished at the east side.)

- I also decided NOT to fight others for the pools... When someone came by my pool, I finished fishing, fished another one if I had just started, then moved on. This was to avoid having 2 people run together looking for pools.

- I also avoided fishing in someone else's pool.

My 38 doesn't tell the whole story... I was actually very unlucky with my catches, AND fought too long with a pool that was poorly placed... Also, near Grom'gol, I had a LOT more people than down east, and still pulled in 38, which is amazing. I feel that with a little luck, I would have gotten this.

So, my advice:

- Make sure you set your Hearthstone to BB (just in case this wasn't painfully obvious by now.)

- I don't think either the east or west side is better... Both seemed relatively similar.

- DON'T fight for pools. Just move on when someone gets to yours, so you can get the next pool by yourself.

Still, I'm not a winner... yet!

Won the contest today on my first attempt. Took about 18 minutes. I helped someone out last week and we lost by about 30 seconds. Here's what I did:

-Set hearth to BB.
-Had 2 friends with me plus I dual boxed with my shammy for water walking.
-Started just south of Grom'gol, I never had to travel far, there was almost always a pool up on my minimap.
-One friend went north and the other south, they'd find someone and start attacking while the other came to help.
-They bounced back and forth between groups of horde, 4 groups total.
-I found getting in position then spinning the camera to a side view helped immensely with judging if I was in the pool or not.
-I got jumped once by an 80 ret pally but given that I arena as prot and had Outfitter setup with keybinds to re-equip my sword and shield I was able to wait 20 seconds while my friends came back.
-The mammoth is great at blocking friendly-faction bobbers, this scared away a couple of Alliance.
-I'm a low-pop server (Underbog-US) 8)

Overall it was really fun and got my adrenaline pumping more than progression raiding. Gave my 2 friends 150g each for helping me out. They had a lot of fun too and managed to get a 300 honor to top it off.

I've had the most awful fishing contest ever.. only because I was so close to winning.

I finished the contest with only 24 fish.. close?
Well I forgot to put autoloot on. The first 3 pools i fished didn't get picked up.
So assuming 4-5 tasty fish per: That would've left me 1-3 fish off.. This takes in to account the fact I was ganked 3 times.

I fished a small area starting just north of grom'gol and kept backing up rather than taking the entire coast. I had loads of pools to myself instead of the south-east, when I would be lucky to get 1-2 in the entire competition.

I'll prepare better for next week and I'm feeling good about the results.

So painfully close(ish). /facepalm

I (technically) won the third time STV. I got the 40 fish, opened the window and was at the point where all I had to do was to click complete quest, instead I started a movie, typed in "I won" and as I clicked enter someone won. Looking back at the movie they were 3-4 seconds behind me.

Still was fun. :) Anyone else do this?
