Every Sunday, I mumble an excuse to my girlfriend to become intensely busy for 60 minutes (including prep time.) Each time so far, I've had to stone to BB and then do the "walk of shame" of going back to Grom'gol, taking the Zeppelin to Org, then the Zep to Warsong Hold, then the long Flightpath to Dalaran... Sigh.</p> <p>Anyway, what's even more frustrating/exciting is that I'm getting REALLY close now. Over the last 3 weeks, I've scored 37, 37 and 38 when the winner was announced. What a pulse-pounding finish...</p> <p>Last week, I tweaked my strategy a bit:</p> <p>- Tried to go to the island at the northwest... Found it already taken by 2 people, decided against it.</p> <p>- As a result, I went to the west coast of STV (I previously fished at the east side.)</p> <p>- I also decided NOT to fight others for the pools... When someone came by my pool, I finished fishing, fished another one if I had just started, then moved on. This was to avoid having 2 people run together looking for pools.</p> <p>- I also avoided fishing in someone else's pool.</p> <p>My 38 doesn't tell the whole story... I was actually very unlucky with my catches, AND fought too long with a pool that was poorly placed... Also, near Grom'gol, I had a LOT more people than down east, and still pulled in 38, which is amazing. I feel that with a little luck, I would have gotten this.</p> <p>So, my advice:</p> <p>- Make sure you set your Hearthstone to BB (just in case this wasn't painfully obvious by now.)</p> <p>- I don't think either the east or west side is better... Both seemed relatively similar.</p> <p>- DON'T fight for pools. Took about 18 minutes. I helped someone out last week and we lost by about 30 seconds. Here's what I did:</p> <p>-Set hearth to BB.<br /> -Had 2 friends with me plus I dual boxed with my shammy for water walking.<br /> -Started just south of Grom'gol, I never had to travel far, there was almost always a pool up on my minimap.<br /> -One friend went north and the other south, they'd find someone and start attacking while the other came to help.<br /> -They bounced back and forth between groups of horde, 4 groups total.<br /> -I found getting in position then spinning the camera to a side view helped immensely with judging if I was in the pool or not.<br /> -I got jumped once by an 80 ret pally but given that I arena as prot and had Outfitter setup with keybinds to re-equip my sword and shield I was able to wait 20 seconds while my friends came back.<br /> -The mammoth is great at blocking friendly-faction bobbers, this scared away a couple of Alliance.<br /> -I'm a low-pop server (Underbog-US) 8)</p> <p>Overall it was really fun and got my adrenaline pumping more than progression raiding. Gave my 2 friends 150g each for helping me out. The first 3 pools i fished didn't get picked up.<br /> So assuming 4-5 tasty fish per: That would've left me 1-3 fish off.. This takes in to account the fact I was ganked 3 times.</p> <p>I fished a small area starting just north of grom'gol and kept backing up rather than taking the entire coast. Previously you needed a shaman or Death Knight to remain mounted and retain a water walking effect but luckily the good old <a href="http://www.wowhead.com/?item=8827">Elixir of Water Walking</a> will now allow you remain mounted with it's affect up. This allows you move more directly to new pools, better positioning for casting and faster traveling if you traverse one of the few long stretches of water in search of underfished pools. These can be gotten from your local alchemist or commonly from the reward bag given by the outlands fishing daily.</p> <p>Crusader aura from a tag along paladin. Helps you spend a lot less time between pools and get an edge on your competition. This is a good time to call in favors if you are serious about winning. Two classes will benefit less from this buff than others (depending on spec) due to their 15% mount speed increase talents: Death knights and fecklessly paladins (who will be using crusader aura anyways). Remember your paladin buddy doesn't have to be max level, crusader aura can be trained at lvl 62</p> <p>Finally <a href="http://www.wowhead.com/?item=2459">swiftness potions.</a> These allow you to quickly dash between two close by pools, especially useful for getting an extra cast on a fresh pool when you are sharing pools with other anglers when your class lacks such a boost. They can also be used on the home stretch to beat out another angler to the quest giver. 5-10 should be enough for one competition. Unfortunately these aren't as cheap as water walking elixirs due to their rare drop old world ingredient. On a related note, all anglers without run speed increasing talents or abilities should be using a meta gem or boot enchant for additional run speed. And a scout who can track fish...
