FishPing isn't a "mod" in the traditional sense. It's simply a directory that goes in your World of Warcraft/Data folder and the game client uses the sound file there instead of the one packed into the MPQ files. It doesn't need to be supported because the system hasn't changed in three years. I use it, and it works great currently. Fish Ping comes with a set of sounds at varying volumes. If you use a louder one, you can have the WoW sounds turned down and still hear the bobber.

As far as the sounds go, the addon "Fishing Buddy" as well as others I'm sure, can automatically adjust the sound settings so that they work better for you. I believe there used to be a setting named "Sounds on character" or something like that. Turning that on (or off) may help. The sound of the bobber gets louder the closer you are to the bobber, that's why zooming in makes it louder. I've never experienced your #3, the sound has always sounded at the same time the bobber bobs for me.

I agree that it would be nice to have a visual announcement. Maybe a suggestion to the Fishing Buddy developer?

Last night I downloaded FishermansFriend (and Fish Warden but that's not relevant).
FishermansFriend autoadjusts sound to maximize the warning.

And I learned something interesting:
1. On long casts you can't hear the bobber.
2. If you back out the point of view way back (which I usually do), the problem noted in (1) gets worse (I fixed this by zooming all the way in to "first-person-shooter mode")
3. Even if the bobber is audible lag effects are such that sometime the sound triggers after I've already looted the fish (not very useful!)

I never noticed any of this before because 90% of my WoW play has been with sound down and iTunes up. Last night it was all about the bobber so sound was up and iTunes off.

So I guess what I'm saying is "Thanks Pipre, but issues noted in 1, or 3 seem to be related to event triggers and client/server sync ".
When the issues I mention above are not in effect I can hear the bobber fine.
Of course I can also hear my neighbor's bobber fine too which is confusing some times.

I'd really like that visual warning.
There used to be a mod called Fish Ping but it hasn't been supported in years - that's along the lines of what I'm looking for. Is there no alternate?

While I don't know of a mod that flashes the screen (a good idea for those of us who like to play with the sound off) you can change the bobber sound without violating your agreement with blizz.

Look up the FishPing "add-on" at curse and follow the directions. Works like a charm!

Hi, I'm a late-to-the-party fisherman
(Never maxed out fishing till long after I reached 80 on my main)
But I'm a dedicated achiever and slowly grinding my way to Salty.

When fishing I find my biggest frustration is missed active bobbers.

All this could be fixed with a simple addon but it doesn't seem to exist.
The addon would flash a Raid Warning style trumpet and floating text that said something like "Caught One!" when the bobber is active.
(I miss the bounce if I look away, and the audio is often not sufficient or confusing if others are fishing nearby)

Is there such an addon?

(PS I'm aware of FishermansFriend auto adjusting sound levels to maximize bobber detects and I plan to use this but its not what I'm looking for - it has extra features I don't need and doesn't emphasize the active bobber as much as I'm looking for.)

Yeah, but what I would really, really like is a unique fish/something caught sound. I don't mind hearing my fellow fisher's catches, but I'd like some distinction on my own catch.

Ya all of those would be great. I mean if they're in the files what's the problem to get them into the game? I wouldn't even mind if they tied them to a quest or achievement just do something to get them in. The ducky...I dunno...a gnome head would be better. Hmmm...I seem to remember an april fools joke based on a gnome head bobber...

That's one of the challenges of fishing, asking yourself all the time "is that close enough to the pool?". I've often wondered if I've missed out on the turtle mount because I recast when I was in that "close" range to the pool. :P

I don't think that is a mod-able thing, but do keep in mind the pools for the fishing tourney are a lot more picky (in my experience, anyways). It seems that all other pools you can just be close to the pool (In that lighter color area on the outside of the circle) and I'll get the fish listed as the pool name. But for the tourney I just made sure every cast I stayed with was with no question inside the pool.

Is there an add-on that makes the bobber area larger, or makes it so you don't have to click on it but just anywhere?

Considering that this functionality once existed, but Blizzard deliberately disabled it, I would say it's pretty clear that they consider this too close to botting. If your main concern is making the bobber larger due to vision issues, try using /sit before fishing, then switching to first person mode. That'll get the camera pretty close to the bobber. If you simply want to make your life easier, here is my advice and what a lot of anglers do while fishing.

First, switch WoW to windowed mode. This even works if it's a full screen window (yes, there is such a thing). The option for windowed mode is a checkbox in the same screen that adjusts your resolution (one of the panes under video options). Then turn off music and ambient sounds.

Now, once you get settled in to fish, simply cast and immediately move your cursor over the bobber (but don't click it yet, obviously). Then you can switch windows and do something else until you hear the bobber splash, then switch back and quickly click to fish up whatever you've caught. Rinse and repeat.

You can make the bobber quite a bit larger by zooming in to first person view. Alternatively, invert the camera (so it faces your front) and move it until the bobber is huge.

Any mechanism which removes the need to actually click on the bobber is likely to break WoW's official terms of use/license.

I don't know of one, but I doubt Blizzard would "endorse" such an addon. Part of the "bot breaking" aspect of fishing is the need to click in a specific location at a specific time. If you take the "specific location" aspect out of it, you're removing half the bot protection.

And the timing aspect wouldn't be hard to "bot." All that's required is a script that listens for the "splash." Sure, some locations splash at random. And it wouldn't be possible to do this if someone else is fishing nearby. However, in the vast majority of locations when you're fishing alone the splash happens only when you've hooked a fish. So all that's really left is the "specific location" protection.
