It's a bug that occurs at low skill in a few locations. You should be able to skill-up by changing location, or possibly by using a lure.

"Your fish got away!"
This little cute message made a comeback for me today when I rerolled and started fishing for the daily.

Player lvl: 11
Fishing Skill: 1
Lure: none
Pole: [Fishing Pole]
Location: Goblin Slums, Orgrimmar
Active quest: [No Dumping Allowed]

The message is consistent and appears every time I clicked the bobber after the splash, just as it would be if I had tried to fish in a city pond prior to the shift to junk catches instead of missed fishes.

I'm curious if anyone else sees this or if I'm missing something here.

ah, and yes, I know it's not very efficient to fish in open waters with my skill. I wasn't really bothered by the thought of dipping the bobber a few times extra. Missed catches still doesn't give skillups though, so this bug/change/feature/whatever made my fishing impossible.

EDIT: forgot to include screenshot

Ok, this fish has just turned me off.

I thought it would be cool to start fishing at a low level, picked it up around 33, went to nat pagle at 34, realised my fail and came back at 35.
So there i was, with a brand new, great fishing pole for my level, after many a corpse run, and a swim from BB to the Swamp of Sorrows.

I decided, why not go for old crafty? As this is my first real horde over my years.

To date, i have fished up around 2.5k fish in the valley of honor alone. Mind you that got me The 1 Ring, i also took a little break to head off to STV, which gave me my Nat Pagle fishin' boots.

I levelled fishing, from around 200, to 450 and beyond looking for this little blighter, to no avail.

Sadly the glitch has been fixed, i can't level up to Outlands, and grabs the crocs quest.

I even put up a ticket to a GM, in a humourous tone, hoping for some info on the whole thing, or just someone to chat to with more than half a brain.
But my response was of course - 99% Standard (I'm very gald you put up a ticket, the support team loves tickets, we hope we can continue to please you when it comes to tickets, if you want to read more on tickets, please put up a ticket and one of our staff will read your ticket as soon as possible.) and 1% (Make sure you aren't on the Wrathgate quest line in phased Orgrimmar, or that you are actually fishing IN Orgrimmar).
Thanks Blizz, i was clearly fishing in Stormwind, i'm a Gnome, DEFINITELY not a Fundead Warlock at level 35, as clearly stated in the ticket

I've given up, i left for dalaran and got The Coin Master within 2-3 days of fishing, and i am now levelling, as well as fishing the odd pools for guildies and various achievements, going for the Derby and Extravaganza as well.

To date i have 4k Fish and other things caught, in about a week.

Thank you Old Crafty for over half of that.

EDIT: Caught after 2.6k fish in the valley of honor. Was going to be my last cast before i turned the laptop off. Thank god.

This is a little odd, and once it started happening I couldn't find anything similar with google, so I figured I'd ask here.

I am an avid fisher on all of my characters. With my latest Horde character I've found a few sweet fishing spots I can fish relatively unmolested in much higher areas. My Orc's level 17, her fishing is at 250, her cooking's at 217. I've been catching electric eels, rockscales, deviates no problem. Then today, all of a sudden no matter where I fish all I catch is bristle whiskers and mud snappers. The split is about 50 - 50, I've tried Stranlevale, Ashenvale and Silverpine so far.

Has this happened to anyone else?

5k casts in Elwynn forest:

0x 15 pound mud snapper
15x 12 pound mud snapper
29x 10 pound mud snapper
22x minor mana potion
21x minor health potion
6x random BOE greens
8x random unbound white items
4x grey shield type items
boat loads of mud snappers and raw brilliant smallfish (smallfish outnumbered snappers about 2:1)

15 pound mud snappers are supposed to be about 1:2k casts, I went 5k before I gave up.
The following Sunday I won STV and got the Rockhide Strongfish within an hour of each other for the salty title.

Long story short, this one will happen when it happens, it's a tough one to force (this is after 2200 casts for crafty out of 1/1000 odds, 1200 for ironjaw out of 1/1000 odds [during which time I caught the 1 ring], and over 4k casts for coin master).

The only two that I was really lucky in were Mr Pinchy (caught him after only 11 casts in highland schools, then got the pet on the first try) and the giant sewer rat (only about 670 casts, 1/1000 odds).

2700+ for Ironjaw
470+ for Crafty (till I learned of the Crock bug)
600+ for 15 lb (50% of that was going for Dark Herring)

I spent about an hour in Shadowglen fishing for the last component of my title (and here I thought that STV Tourney would be the prob... easy 2 tries).

With over 230 casts I caught nothing only raw brilliant smallfish and raw longjaw mud snapper with 1 exception of one (1) minor mana potion. Normally every 60 or so casts I see some sort of frill such as 10 and 12 lb off hand frill fish. In fact just prior to the patch I had about 400 casts with 2x 12 lbs, 4x10 lbs, and 1 of each potion type.

Do you think now a bad time to work on the one that didn't get away?

(Also, I swear some accounts have luck modifiers based on RNG + account ID or something.)

[Edit]
Ok, well I made 2 more casts just after posting this and finally caught a 12lb mud snapper.
But I still feel that the drop rate is down a good bit.

Definitely a change in the catch rate on dailies. I've had the "no loot" issue, plus the "first cast" benefit of many quests is gone. Tonight I got the baby crocolisk quest, which I've always gotten on the first cast in the Mage pool in IF, but didn't get one after many casts. When I went to Stormwind (where the quest actually says to go, LOL) I got one on first cast. Last night, I had to catch tons of Felblood snappers before getting the Monstrous one. Again, formerly a "first cast" item.

I did the "Felblood Fillet" quest. Probably about 15-20 casts, I did not keep exact track. I started fishing for it, got a summons for a dungeon run, and failed to fish it up before I had to accept the summons. In that time, I did get an empty loot window.

I returned after the run, and got a few more empty loot windows (as well as regular fish results). I eventually got a regular Felblood Snapper & a Monstrous Felblood Snapper.

Just did "the worlds largest mudfish"

at first catch.. extreme lag, couldnt loot , couldnt anyting.
1 min later 1 fish.... fished then normally and after 10 catches it came....

so seems abit buggy and looks like its back to catching is not in first cast anymore..

Confirmed. I tried Bait Bandits, and got an empty loot window. Dropping the quest caught fish as normal, re-taking the quest gave me empty loot. I tried about 10 more casts and got the quest fish. I did not think to try and fish after catching the quest fish but before turning in the quest. I disabled all add-ons and tried overriding auto-loot with no difference (I would get an actual empty loot bag though, instead of just catching nothing, which made what was happening a little more obvious).

I also did Crocs in the City on another realm, which DID give me a low-level fish each time (but the first looted fish was very lagged), and the crocolisk as the 2nd "fish" after a few casts. I self-mage-teleported to shattrath after catching the croc with no incident, but servers have been going up and down, so getting kicked may have just been the server.

From what I've read on the official forums, the daily fishing quests are still sometimes bugged - as they were on the Public Test Realm: When trying to fish for the daily quest fish, the loot window comes up empty. This does not happen for every daily quest. I believe that if you continue to catch nothing, eventually the quest fish will appear. Keep in mind that daily quest fish are no longer always caught on first catch - it might take many catches, as it did originally in patch 2.4.

There's also a post about Crocolisks in the City kicking a character out of the game when recalling to Dalaran, which I know nothing about.

If anyone else has more information, please post below.

Just got the Crocolisk quest, headed to Ogr. and was in the Valley of the Spirits
Fished maybe 15 minutes, here's my catches (no raid, no auto loot):
Longjaw Mud Snapper 18 : 28.1%
Bristle Whisker Catfish 8 : 12.5%
Brilliant Smallfish 6 : 9.4%
Baby Crocolisk 20 : 46.9%
17 Pound Catfish 1: 1.6%
Old Crafty 1: 1.6%
I looted no fish, but the tracker still marks it even if it's not looted.

So if the quest thing is changed in the PTR, then I'd say people better get the quest quick before this method is no longer working. Worked for me, I'm ecstatic!

Quick sample on the current PTR, with the Crocs quest, in Orgrimmar, as Alliance: 60 catches, of which 6 also fished up a Baby Crocolisk (I threw the quest fish back in immediately). Zero Old Crafty catches. That's not entirely conclusive, but it looks like the quest is not giving "free" Old Crafties in 3.0.8.

That's not an unreasonable argument, that this could still be a bug. In a world where every Zune on earth commits mass-suicide on December 31, 2008 I could certainly imagine someone typing
x *= 100
in the wrong place.

I think we may be able to learn more once 3.0.8 comes out (<shock>that it's not out yet</shock>) but since you've clearly been on 3.0.8, can you tell us, el, if the catch rate is still artificially high for Old Crafty accompanying Baby Crocolisks on the PTR? I don't imagine it'd be terribly difficult to stay alive in Orgrimmar on a low-pop PTR, and there's always the waterfall.

Still, Maaven's comment just seems too cute... And this is also a world where if you're starving and under attack by an Iron Golem you can polymorph into a Rust Monster and solve both problems, and wearing a ring of slow digestion stops you from being killed by the Purple Worm that just engulfed you: I cannot discount the possibility they're being cute.

As far as I know, WotLK first introduced spells (buffs, abilities) that change loot probability. We see it in the Dalaran fountain.

This means that it is technically possible for Blizzard to alter the chance of a drop by "casting a spell". Passive spells are not seen by the player. It follows that any drop chance can now be linked to some other criteria. Perhaps having "Crocolisks in the City" on your quest log?

Generally Blizzard do not write in effects that players have no reasonable way of discovering... Although it could be argued that the variation of certain fish by time of day was unlikely to be apparent to players. Nor the need to emote at chickens to trigger quests. And counter-argued that Blizzard did not repeat that in TBC or (as far as we can tell) WotLK.

Of course it makes no sense to turn a ~1/1000 catch rate into a ~1/10 catch rate for a fish that is:

Not related to the daily quest.

Has its rarity enshrined in an achievement, so logically should remain non-trivial.

Is one of a pair, each with a faction-specific bias, where the change is not applied to the other fish in the pair, thus creating a faction bias.

Even if we have misunderstood the trigger, the final 2 points still stand.

All of which makes Maaven's comment that "this is not a bug", curious.

I could accept "this is not the bug" - because there clearly is a higher-level bug causing the single-catch daily quest fish to caught on the first catch. That bug was eventually fixed on the 3.0.8 Public Test Realm. But "this is not a bug" implies "this is intended". As outlined above, it would be technically possible, but not rational design.

I certainly know the pains of trying to catch old crafty. Ever since I saw the salty achievement I wanted it. That is why I started to raise my fishing. I went out to Orgrimmar to go get the stupid fish, after getting Old Ironjaw after a mere hour of fishing in Ironforge, and started fishing in that cleverly hidden little alcove of rocks near the waterfall in the valley of honor. 3 hours later I was no longer excited, also more than a little anxious to get out because my fishing skill had hit max and i needed more training. But i perservered, and no more than 10 minutes after I left the alcove and went to the lake outside it, I caught the stupid thing. Now I have both but I am also wondering, can Old Crafty not be caught in the alcove???

I will try using the Crocolisks in the City trick to catch him under the Waterfall tonight. I've still got Fate, Up Against Your Will so it shouldn't be too difficult.

I have more information, though this relates to Old Ironjaw. I just got back from Ironforge, where I fished in the pool in the Forlorn Cavern for an hour. I still had the Crocolisks in the City quest in my log, still had no Baby Crocolisk in my inventory. I was not in a raid at the time. Autoloot was off the whole time.

I managed to catch that Baby Crocolisk 26 times in the Forlorn Cavern pool. Sometimes I looted it and then threw it away, sometimes I just didn't loot it at all. Either way, not once did Old Ironjaw appear with him. I think it's safe to say that the Baby Crocolisk does not increase the odds of Old Ironjaw appearing in your catch. Perhaps Old Ironjaw doesn't share the taste for Baby Crocolisks that Old Crafty does?

Given the ridiculously low drop rate of Old Ironjaw (1%? 0.1%?) it's obviously impossible to determine if the presence of a Baby Crocolisk in the catch or Crocolisks in the City in the quest log has a negative effect on the catch rate, since the difference 0.2% or 0.1%, and 0% would only be distinguishable over a span of a couple thousand or more catches.

Point is, however, 0/26 catches later, Old Ironjaw's absence can conclusively debunk the suggestion that the Crocolisks in the City trick works for Old Ironjaw.
