i was trying to do the fishing daily to find the severed arm
out in the frozen sea and had the same problem...

lucky for me there was a helpful person out there
who whispered to me to try moving around using a water walking potion
and i was able to complete the quest.

(this was on tuesday, have not had an issue since)

I am fairly sure as of today this has been fixed. I went to do Dangerously Delicious just now and was able to stand on dry land while casting.

If you can't stand in the water a water walking potion will work. I had to use one this morning for the daily.

Same deal here. I went to get the ghost fish daily and none of my usual fishing spots would work. I had to step into the water to get any cast to land in "fishable water."

Intriguing. Most confusing is that the bug is based on where you stand, not where the bobber might land.

Added: There are a few posts in Blizzard's customer service forum, so they're aware of the problem. The solution given is to stand in the water, which isn't always possible.

Haven't had a chance to test anywhere else yet, but I noticed something odd in WG today doing the daily...

I had to stand almost IN the water for the cast to go through, if I stood even a little ways out, I got the 'didn't land in fishable water' error. I noticed a lot of people with this issue, and even standing on the little floating ice chunks didn't seem to help.

Definitely NOT something that was there last time I was in the zone.

I will actually stand way back on the shore for some pools in STV and then just apam-click the button. That way I can garauntee that when the cast does go off it will land right in the pool. This trick works really well on those "half pools" where there is just a sliver of school you could land your bobber in.

OP: The lava in IF is particularly disturbing. Those brilliant smallfish must have some crazy fire resist!

I do believe El's right about Scholomance. I remember being surprised that such a shallow, insignificant patch of water was fishable there.

It's always been a superstition of mine to stand waist-deep in water to reduce the occurrence of the shallow water error message, particularly when fishing on the coast of STV for the fishing contest. I can't say for sure whether it actually helps, but I think it makes a difference.

I think it is Scholomance where you can fish in the shallow water one of the bosses stands in. Shallow water is mostly only un-fishable in Outlands.

There's one place to fish in Burning Steppes; the little pool of water in the Ogre caves, Dreadmaul Rock. You can also swim south along the coast of Feralas until you're in Silithus and fish. According to Thottbot, Hive'Regal in Silithus also has pools in it you can fish from.

I don't think I have a screenshot, but when the PTR was buggy and Silmyr lake was mostly empty with a few "squares" of water floating in place, I managed to water-walk on one corner and cast into the opposite corner...

I was waiting on a respawn of U'cha in Un'Goro Crater ( the ape cave in the north eastern corner of the map) and had some time to kill. Just so you know U'cha spawns in a little area of water that my gnome could happily walk around in.

So, I decide to waste the time by seeing if i could fish it. I hit the fishing button expecting to see that water to shallow to fish message and sure enough instead i get a successful cast. Hmmm. After a few more casts, my bobber is completely in the stone pillar in the center of the water.

Is this just a bug? Every other time I have fished where i could walk i would get the water too shallow message (grrrrr those stupid pools on the STV coast).

Anyone else have any weird fishing locations?

Fortunately, if you get the "Bait Bandits" quest, you can still complete it by fishing in the water just outside the horde town. It looks like a lake (rather than a river, which is specified by the quest), but I was able to catch the Blackfin Darter there anyway.

It's also kind of funny to watch the waterfall flowing down from there, which evaporates instead of flowing into a river.

It's a known bug. Some areas of water in Outland are completely empty. Many others just have odd graphical glitches. It isn't entirely a visual issue - you can't fish where you don't see water...
