More speculation:

It's possible professions will be completely re-worked. Currently Old Azeroth is full of old "endgame" materials which are more-or-less never used, because people leveling professions go straight to Outland, and many old endgame items are worse than Outland greens. Not to mention the old profession quests (which I suspect are only useful for pacifists...), and obscure limited-supply recipes.

Cataclysm would be a perfect opportunity to re-arrange some of that old content, perhaps to make it slightly more useful again. Critically, the way Northrend is designed is quite different from Old Azeroth - it's a lot easier to find things in Northrend, to know what you have to do without someone telling you. So if Old Azeroth is being updated to Northrend-standards, things like limited supply recipes must surely go. Likewise the Big Iron Fishing Pole is far too well hidden for a mid-level pole.

(For reference, 'fish' tags can be used to link to fishing gear, and give you a tooltip - basically any page or thing the Fish Finder search knows about can be placed in fish tags and is automatically linked. The forum simply requires the correct spelling, while the Fish Finder tries to guess if the spelling is wrong.)

Beyond that, I'm unsure. We know that the level of many zones is changing. We don't know everything, because the BlizzCon presentations only showed about half of the zones. Logically, that means the fish caught in different zones will also need to change, because there is a loose relationship between zone level of fish level. It would make no sense for a newly-low-level Azshara to contain fish that can't be used until around level 50.

But: A determined level 10 angler can already catch almost anything, so the purpose of restricting the best fish to high-end zones is less clear. In the past I've suggested that some worthwhile fish should be caught everywhere, requiring anglers that want to catch certain types of buff food (for example) to travel to specific zones. But travel isn't favored anymore (instant teleports to dungeons are the latest example). People used to flying from Dalaran to neighboring Wintergrasp to stock up on Fish Feasts, might get freaked out by traveling to Winterspring or the Western Plaguelands instead. (Members of the Linken's Boomerang Owner's Club will be less concerned.)

The big unknown is the mooted change to the fishing mechanic, which could change everything. Of course, "Blizzard" have been talking about this for 18 months (it was first mentioned just before WotLK testing), so I'll believe it when I see it.

Cataclysm will change the levels of some current old-world zones, which will affect fishing.

Azshara will change from a high-level zone to the (Horde) Goblins' second starting zone, about level 5-15, so it's unlikely that Patches of Elemental Water will still be there. This is the only location they spawn at now, so either they will move to a new zone or disappear. Thousand Needles is being flooded and will be a 40-45 level zone, so maybe they could reappear there.

Stranglethorn Vale is said to be one of the most "heavily revamped" zones; will the contest change?

Desolace is changing, but not as drastically, and appears to remain about the same level zone, so presumably the lobster traps will still give up Big Iron Fishing Poles.

Stonetalon Mountains have a valley cut out by goblins to Ashenvale, but it looks like it will still have Oil Spills.

I also wonder what will happen to the "pound" fish: 7-103 Mightfish and 7-22 Lobster that can only be caught in the Bay of Storms. Not to mention the pound fish that can be caught inland. Should I make a push to get these rare fish now.....im afraid they might disappear and ill never forgive myself!

Actually, according to BlizzCon, Cata will destroy Aberdine (The quest hub town is getting moved further north).
There is also additional information saying that Shatterspear Village will be fully accessible in Cata.
If you look at the Cata stuff you can see a pic of the village with an Ancient Protector nearby.
There's also a rumor/speculation around saying those trolls will be the ones to teach the horde trolls how to be Druids.
Didn't know you could still get there though. Thought they had turned all those type of places into a no-go zone (where you get ported out of)
Thay

Well crap... oh well, at least I got to fish in peace without the Horde coming in for training. Still it was fun trying to figure out how to get there.

I didn't know it was a no-go zone. I didn't run into any invisible barriers... just very tall cliffs.....

Lol, Oh I know there is a few other methods. It was more me being a tad lazy. I've already gone and fished up some (and kept a copy of the recipe aside) for my new Cata toon.

My main has maxed fishing, so getting fish isn't really a problem.

It's was just that with Azshara changing it could take out both the lobster and the mightfish leaving the only 275 recipe that is vendor buyable as the Baked Salmon.
The only other 2 275 recipes is the Smoked Desert Dumplings - the Slithis quest (which may not survive the Cataclysm itself) and the Runn Tum Tuber Surprise (which is a BoP drop in Dire Maul).

It just limits the leveling a bit.

Then again the Cataclysm might change all the migrating paths (Ie might change the fish in nearly all zones)

Thay

NB: I worked this info out as i got bored at one point, and have mapped out a path to level cooking from 1 to 375 where I can stand next to a trainer and level each block till i hit the Level cap.

One of the things on my Cataclysm bucket list is to visit and fish in Shatterspear Village. I never knew it existed until I looked down about a month ago while flying from Auberdine to Moonglade and far below - there was the village.

Let me tell ya, getting to the village is a huge pain and requires some slow fall method.

But the cool thing is the water is fishable!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/stormbear/3902259522/sizes/o/

http://www.wowwiki.com/Shatterspear_Village

Here is my fishing data from the lake...

20 casts
darkshore grouper 45%
raw longjaw mud snapper 30%
raw bristle whisker catfish 10%
brilliant smallfish 15%

Cataclysm is rumored to destroy Darkshore, so get to fishing while the fishing is good!

For what it's worth, I've usually levelled cooking at 275 up using Raw Whitescale Salmon, and the appropriate recipe.

El has the scoop on the Fish Finder where to fish these up, I've had good times with a few water-walking potions and Lake Jaedenir in Feralas, though you really do need close to 300 fishing and a +100 lure to get good yields on fishing here.

If you're "on level" for that sort of fishing and cooking, please take care around the elite patrols and dragons that fly through the area (hence the water walking potions mentioned), but the fishing here (in terms of catch rate for the Whitescale Salmon) is very worthwhile!

I do hope they stay as they are an excellent way to level cooking at the 275ish mark

It's an intriguing problem:

Flying will speed up the contest, but not by that much - winners normally spend the minority of their time riding. However, changes to the fishing mechanic may remove pools entirely, leading anglers to hunt specific fish in the water. That may favor careful observation - flying may become a disadvantage.

Blizzard have never repeated the contest anywhere else, even though places like Northrend's southern coast would be well-suited. Yet it's one of the few parts of "classic" Azeroth that is routinely played by level 80s. Since something about the contest captivates certain players week after week, I'd expect to see the idea copied.

Clearly the contest is quite unlike fishing more generally - the contest is far more aggressive and competitive. Which makes me wonder: Could a second method of fishing be developed based around the contest: An alternative version of fishing, optional, that might appeal to those people that "don't like fishing"?

Later people shall still enjoy all the aspects and "specials" of the game, but it is time to somehow continue the story of Azeroth.

So I think it will stay, but you can never be sure with Blizzard.

I like what I've heard about the expansion. If they're really raising skill caps to 525, the first thing I'll be doing on the day it hits is getting to a fishing trainer. With all the new water areas ... maybe they'll give us something exotic to fish up in the remade flooded Darkshore?

It's just that corpse running and all, I'll miss the old Bay of Storms. I'll get over it.

During a panel at Blizzcon, they showed a series of screens demonstrating how the phasing system could cause water levels to rise as you progressed through a quest chain. The actual location wasn't clear, but my initial suspicion was that it was Azshara. Also, if Azshara is going to become a Lv.10-20 zone, it makes sense they'd size it down a little since it currently takes so long to traverse even with an epic mount.

So maybe instead of RIP we'll be saying "Congratulations on your expansion"?
