el on "Comment on (Almost) Anything"

Over the new year I've added some new features to El's Anglin' (and Professions). Most obvious are the drop down menus (thanks mj for the suggestion) and the ability to comment on (almost) anything.

Just like the Fish Finder, if you tag a forum topic with the title of a page, or use that title as the topic title, a summary of the topic will eventually appear at the bottom of that page. Changes will take up to 10 minutes to transfer from the forum to other pages.

There are a few exceptions (for example, you cannot comment on the front page). If there is a small box at the bottom of the page inviting comments, then feel free to tag/title.

The idea seemed to work reasonably well on the Fish Finder, so I thought I'd expand it to every other page. Precisely what information you get is a bit chaotic, but even the best comment systems (Wowhead is a good example) never quite work perfectly. And tagging forum topics allows the same discussion to appear on several pages, if it covers several topics.

Suggestions/improvements are always welcome. Some take forever, but some get implemented quite quickly.

For those who like to fish I have an Idea to improve our community!
To create a community the best thing is a channel.
Now just type "/join fish" and you'll enter a fishing channel, there's one now in Darkmoon fair realm.

But the topic had a totally random title, so I started a new one. ("EVRYONE LISTEN! - ! - ! - !" is never a good forum topic title...)

Game-specific channels are fine, but limited to faction and realm. There are about 350 English language realms, each with 2 factions. So that's about 700 separate little communities. And I know some people here play on non-English language realms. So it could be more.

Some websites have IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channels, which don't seem terribly popular relative to the site. There are some Twitter-like applications that allow players to communicate with the outside world (like other realms), but they don't seem terribly popular either. Blizzard's upcoming new Battle.net will allow more inter-realm communication, but I don't expect it to support "interest groups", like fishing - I still don't think they understand how fragmented communities can become around "niches" like this.

But it's clearly something people want to do.

Do you have any ideas? Thoughts?

There are more general things I'd like to do to bolster the community - things like being able to find other anglers on your realm, or tracking catches/achievements. We've even talked about in-game addons in the past. But I'd not considered chat.

Taisai suggested we should "get the name out" about this site. That started me thinking about how the people that are already here first discovered El's Anglin'. I need your help!

If you can remember, please post below how you first discovered or were told about the site. If possible, also post how long ago you first visited.

Eventually this will become a formal front-page poll, but I'm not yet sure what the options will be.

I've just added code that should make the site readable on iPhones and similar modern small-screen/handheld devices. But I have no reliable way to test it! If you have an iPhone (in particular), PSP, Blackberry, or something like that, I'd appreciate it if you could browse to this site and verify it is readable.

The most obvious difference is the lack of a left-hand margin, but there are other tweaks too. There is one known limitation - complex tables don't crush down onto tiny screens.

Warsinger wrote:

By the way, maybe El should fix so that the "One that didn't get away"-achievment is shown as an accomplishment here on the site? ... Waddya say?

I'm planning to add a few more catches to the forum profile "WoW Aquarium" when WotLK goes live. But, I need to rethink the way they are displayed. Since they are your profiles, it's only fair to ask how you think I should tackle the issues:

The list of catches is getting rather long and cluttered to be displayed with each post: I'd like to keep the forum focused on the content of the post itself, while still allowing some character information to be displayed. One solution may be to only display icons against forum posts.

In the past we've talked about listing every fish (a bit like Breanni's pet collecting), but that felt like over-kill. When the forums opened there were only a few really hard achievements listed, but I felt that there should be a wider variety, so that everyone had a reasonable chance at getting something to show their anglin' expertise. How rare or special should catches be?

If achievements are added to the official Armory, it should be possible to automate them based on the character information you add (although we might need 101 character slots to keep everyone happy). However, not every notable catch is an achievement. Plus adding catches yourself gives you a bit more control - for example, the ability to show a fish caught before patch 3.0.2.

Thoughts? Anything else? Keep in mind that a lot can be done here, but there is a trade-off between displaying lots of the information, and trying to maintain a smooth-running, easy to read, forum.

Earlier today elsanglin.com was redirected to a completely different site. After investigation, it transpired that the server host's code was broken. The site was not hijacked or hacked, and all account data remains safe. Thanks to everyone that alerted me to the problem. Apologies for any inconvenience.
