Honestly, if griefing other players was the only way for you to "win" the contest, I feel sorry for you.

Anyone can "win" something by disadvantaging all their competition.

I hope you feel proud of yourself, and sleep well at night knowing that you went into the competition fair and square, and proved yourself a luckier angler than everyone else there that day.

Oh, yeah, /sarcasm off now.

I'll be surprised if Blizz lets you keep the win, especially if players were complaining. You can bet at least one ticket was opened if not more.

JIC anyone is thinking of trying this, blocking pools comes under Blizzard's harassment policy and is actionable.

Okay, so I had been trying the STV Extravaganza contest for a few weeks until my friend came up with the brilliant idea of bringing a few people with Mammoth mount to help me out.

I started out on the south-western coast and I had one of my friends run along the eastern coast, and 2 along the western coast to simply take their Mammoth mounts and stand in the pool and block the fishing bopper for the other players so they can't click it (and of course attempt ganks if the player is opposing faction - but most importantly block casts with Mammoth mount).

I won the contest in 14-15 minutes and people were complaining in the chat.

Cheating? No one told me about the rules! ;)

Good luck! Go win the conest now :D

I love it when 80's stop fishing to inspect me, and i can proudly know that they are looking at my pole, which is superior to their epic kalu'ak pole with only +30.
While i, havent even hit 60 yet.
Haven't bothered to go back a second time yet, took too mcuh planning and preparation, im levelling.

But more to the point, any actual avid angler who takes the trinket over the pole will soon hate themselves for their poor choice.
Just like the Lock quest for the Scythe type weapon, although its not a better upgrade than the rest of the rewards... IT'S A SCYTHE.

In short - CHOOSE THE POLE.

The pole, of course. As mentioned above, what self-respecting angler WOULDN'T want to rock the best pole in the game?

I managed to win for the 2nd time over the weekend... Now I have the trinket too!

Just won at level 40, planned for entire week, couldn't believe it when i won, as someone hearthed just behind me and i had a few mistakes with bad casting and things.

But in response to the question - Definitely Pole. Who WOULDN'T want the best pole in the game.
I'd much rather show off the greatest fishing pole around, than turn into a fish.
Also, i like the idea of having a better pole at level 40, than the people who farmed rep at 80.

The last two comments gave me food for thought. I've always wanted an overhaul to the look of the Arcanite Fishing Pole, but on reflection I'd rather have it stay the same than become some gaudy monstrosity like the Northrend poles. I'd like a simple change like keeping the same model and making the pole electric blue or some other subtle change to let people know that you aren't using a plain old Strong Fishing Pole.
Edit: In response to the original question: I went pole first then trinket for my second win. No angler's gear is complete without that pole.

I see your point, but frankly anyone that cares at all what fishing rod you're using will inspect you anyway.

*ramble alert*

It seems to have changed over time what is the "good" choice, depends on situation.

My first win was at level 30 on the first sunday of a TBC launch server, and the trinket was very handy leveling in certain zones. I wore it full-time for many levels due to the general lack of solo quest trinkets. It was also awesome to go fishmode in town (TB pond) and whenever else I could in groups or raids like SSC :)

I won again at level 49 the next sunday for the pole, but it was awhile before I had the "free time" (level 70 and clearing karazhan, waiting for 25 people geared enough for gruul) to skill up and equip it.

Before the contest was associated with achievements/title seekers, only fishing nuts or OCDs did it with any seriousness. It was pretty slow and quiet on the various servers I did it on, I felt no real pressure, had no harassment at all and enjoyed winning the contest on a couple more characters as well.

3.0 sure did change that, I absolutely hate the contest now and don't know what demon made me do it on my DK and new druid. Probably the same demon making me finish 3 more purple protos in July and the 7th in Oct. (I really hate brewfest, and slow flightpaths in general)

Before they changed how fishing skill worked, the pole was a no-brainer except for rare situations like my first. Now that skill means very little (almost everything you want is in pools) its a toss-up to your vanity or perfectionism.

+10 skill that rarely matters versus the easy to get jeweled pole that looks so much better on many characters, and you can drag the trinket out of the bank to play in the fountain. They really should update the pole graphic...

I like the way the pole looks. It's the best item in the game but just looks like any old rod, it's understated. Maybe I like that because I am British.

Anyway the key thing for me is that it goes really well with my fishing gear, compared to the more "fancy" poles that you would never actually see anyone in real life using.

..as far as all the 'oh i wish the pole looked cooler'...barf.

the pole rocks because its simple. it speaks for itself. the last thing i want is a pole that might draw any attention away from my incredibly over-sized, ridiculously-monstrous, outlandishly-stupid-even-for-a-fantasyworld "cloth" shoulders. ....or my similiary stupendous "caster" sword that's about 1/2 my size.

the pole is nice change from the average over-done epic items. i sooooo hope it doesn't get updated.

I have both and what no one mentions is that the trinket actually kinda sucks (especially for locks as it's only 5% faster than Unending Breath).

*It has a 30 second cooldown when equipped so you have to plan ahead.
*You pop out of form whenever you hit air bubbles which is very annoying.
*Any damage or casting breaks form.

DEFINATELY pole first.

It was a very tough choice for me. I loved the idea of the pole and the +fishing, but when I won it was the first week of the tournament, and the thought of being the only person on the server with the trinket to show off won me over. And BOY did I show it off! I met a lot of people swimming around with that, some of then I still keep in contact with.

I did go back and get the pole though ;-)

I took the trinket. :D The pole's cool, but the bonus just wasn't enough for me tbh.

The trinket's great because it's unique. Everyone can get some kind of fishing pole, but you can only turn into a fish if you win the contest and pick that reward. It's very nice for when I go out mining because I can reach underwater nodes very quickly. If I know I'm going to be swimming, I equip the trinket ahead of time. :D It's a real time-saver, and nothing beats turning into a fish at random!
