I took the trinket. :D The pole's cool, but the bonus just wasn't enough for me tbh.

The trinket's great because it's unique. Everyone can get some kind of fishing pole, but you can only turn into a fish if you win the contest and pick that reward. It's very nice for when I go out mining because I can reach underwater nodes very quickly. If I know I'm going to be swimming, I equip the trinket ahead of time. :D It's a real time-saver, and nothing beats turning into a fish at random!

I got the fishing pole when I won it and I'm glad I did. Now that there's a Sea Turtle the swim speed bonus of the trinket is obsolete.

As for the underwater breathing part of the trinket, I have my trusty ring for that :)

I used to always say that u were better off taking the pole but when I heard about cataclysm I changed my turn-in macro for the trink. Won the trink and am going to keep trying for the pole. Faster swim speed I think will come in handy for cataclysm; maybe even keep it equipped the entire leveling time.

Back then I was really not sure what to take.

I won long before BC, so the extravaganza pole was the best for Alliance (the Horde had their quest pole from Desolace), but I had more interest in the trinket.

So the first time I choose the trinket.
Some weeks later I got the pole and I am still using it (even after being able to buy the pole from the Kaluak). ^.^

As you said, the +fishing isn't so important anymore but the sad thing about the trinket is the 30 seconds cooldown. I still got it in my bag, but I just don't use it anymore. I am way faster just swimming instead of waiting until I can use the trinket (and now of course you got flying, so it's even less usefull).
It's only a fun item for very rare moments - but then it is still awesome. :D

i never won it but i would go for the pole, like stikman said there is a much bigger chance that you will use the pole more than the trinkent and the pole is and (i'm pretty sure) will be the best fishing pole in the game. i also agree that the pole needs to look a bit cooler or somthing because if you look at the jeweled or ghost pole's from the dalaran daily's they look much cooler..

When I won, I took the pole. To me it was a no-brainer. The trinket, while really cool, is something I would rarely ever use. But the pole gets used everyday and is still the best pole in the game. When wotlk was announced, I was afraid my trustly pole would get benched in favor of one of the new ones, but by the looks of it, Blizz intends to keep this pole as the best pole in the game. I just wish they would update the graphics of it to look as cool or cooler than the new ones. Also upgrading it to epic status would be a nice touch being that it is quite a bit harder to get and better than the epic pole in the game now.

If you win the stranglethorn extravaganza, which reward would you take? and why?

i would take the trinket since +fishing doesnt really mean anything now. Also turning into a fish is always nice :)

Sad to say, I agree with the above poster - I'm also pretty much giving up on fishing in Northrend due to the sheer number of 'fishing griefers' (standing/mounting on bobbers, fishing from 'claimed' schools, etc.). I appreciate that Blizz want more people to fish, but for me, they're taken most of the fun out of it. And as for the ever-present gankers and gangs on mammoths at the Extravaganza... that's the only achievement missing from my title but even that isn't enough to motivate me to go back there.

I wonder what makes people fish in a school that's already being fished from? In the last few months I've met several people who preferred to fish from "my" school while there were other schools around. While I do understand that sort of behavior during Extravaganza (only before winner is announced), I don't understand what makes people think that it's OK to share a school with someone. If I see someone fishing in a school, I just leave it to them and move to the next one. If there are no schools, I just wait for a new spawn and go to it.

For me fishing from "someone's" school is as disgraceful as collecting herb/ore while someone fights a mob near it. I've even seen people from my own faction doing that sort of things to me, which is a real shame. I think of them as of spoiled kids, who just believe that everything belongs to them and that it's OK to make other people do half of the job for you. I bet they belong to the same group of people who never tips.

Today while farming mats for 60 fish feasts for my guild, I've met three people who just couldn't resist the urge to fish from the same schools as I did, even though there were schools 10-15 yards away from it. With all those new people getting into the fishing, I certainly find it less enjoyable to fish with every passing day. Even though my Badapples list consists mostly of people who ninja loot, play their class poorly or just plain stupid people, it grows longer because I've started adding people who didn't tip or did something disgraceful in my opinion. I just wish Blizzard never bothered to make any changes to fishing at all. Compared to TBC, I see people fishing much more now, which actually makes it less exciting for me. Might as well just go to fish in Azeroth for all the rare fishes, just to be less annoyed of how crowded some pools are.

And one other note, nonameform. I think you will find that the harder you have to work for the win, the better it will feel when you finally get it. Don't let all those other factors discourage you, just remember that everyone else has to deal with them too, and so it is an advantage for you if you can figure out how to get through those difficulties. Think of how the contest will be a true achievement for you when you finally win it, and try to be inspired by that fact to only work harder at getting it, not get discouraged by it.

Also remember there is a lot of luck involved in winning. You can do everything perfect for weeks in a row and just never quite get the perfect drop pattern. This happened for me many times before I finally won. When things finally go perfect, it feels amazing.

Just remember, that getting the perfect drop pattern won't mean you win unless you are doing everything else right first, so just keep plugging at it and improving on your technique and that drop pattern will happen eventually for you.

Good luck!

We Had It All Along *cough* doesn't require any more luck than many of the other PvP achievements. It simply requires a group of people working together towards the same goal. I got it with a guild premade where we simply capped 2 bases and held the third until the very end. Sure it requires a good group, but so do many of the other PvP achievements (e.g. Defense of the Ancients, Stormtrooper, The Alterac Blitz, Resilient Victory to name a few). I don't think you could get any of those other achievements without a really good group actively working towards each one specifically, and that's not going to happen without a premade.

Even though this is a very old thread, I believe my post is about the "spirit" of STV contest too. As a foreword: I do try to win STV for the title and the pole. I was going to try STV before achievements were introduced, but since I switched factions and had to level character once again to level cap, I had no time to actually try the contest in the past. I've read some strategies and posts on it and it scarred me off somewhat.

After losing STV yet another time today, I start to question why Blizzard didn't change the quest since they introduced achievements. In my opinion, each character should have only one chance to win the contest and receive both the pole and trinket as rewards. Those people who have already won the contest in the past, should be able to redeem trinket or pole from Riggle Bassbait. Also they should only be able to turn in fish for money and items after winning the contest.

While some achievements do require luck (for example, We Had It All Along *cough*), most of them can be completed any time in the game. STV on the other hand is a one time per week opportunity that lasts somewhere between 15 to 20 minutes on my server. Chances are that with twinks and people who have already won the contest in the past messing around, I won't win it in foreseeable future.

I had no problem fishing in Bay of Storms for about 8 hours in a row and never seeing a single rare fish for achievement, but I have problem winning STV due to different factors. Sometimes it's that little lvl 19 twink who catches those 1-2 fishes that would made me a winner, sometimes it's people who have already won in the past, but who want to get either the trinket or the pole on their second attempt. I even know people who have won STV on my server more than 2 times on a single char.

I believe that during the times of old PVP ranking system, there were some rules of conduct that made people retire, after achieving High Warlord/Grand Marshal rank, so that the others could try to achieve that too. I don't understand why people can't stick with the same rules with STV and allow others to win. I personally don't hate people who win the contest and I always congratulate them, if they are from my faction, but if I see people winning twice, it makes me quite angry to be honest.

Also the twinks. Why they want to fish during the contest> They have little to no chance ever winning the contest as they have problems fishing in the area. Even if they do fish at Yojamba Isle, they will have trouble reaching two pools north from it as there are mobs. Without proper guardians, they just have to stick to those pools that spawn around the isle thus greatly reducing their chances to win. But I bet most of them come to fish for Keefer's Angelfish and not to win the contest, so if they actually start fishing before the contest winner was announced, they're doing a great job of screwing it up for the others, their own faction or not. There must be a special hell for them. It's the same sort of people who needs to fish in your pool after the contest is over, even though there are pools for everyone to stay busy for 2 hours. I seriously don't understand that: contest is over, you're trying to make some gold/catch a rare fish, so why bother sharing your pool with someone, if you can just move along the coast and fish there, getting more fishes?

Contest for me now is mindless grinding. I'm sure that I will say it was fun, if I win, but since I'm losing (39 fishes is my best result) I don't find it funny at all. On Saturday night I come to Booty Bay to set my hearthstone and move to one of the places where pools spawn. I bring Elixir of Water Walking with me, I bring my fishing boots that have a Minor Speed enchant on them and I remap my mounting button, so I can move faster to a distant pool. I sit there in front of PC 15-20 minutes before the contest and I have to try to move all of my RL appointments to other days or different time, so I can try to win yet again. Those 20 minutes are the most annoying 20 minutes of WoW I have every week and I simply can't quit there, considering that I do want to win. Sometimes I even start cursing when I see bugged pools, which are very hard to fish from, when I pass them, or when my bobber just doesn't want to land into the pool.

Changes that were made to fishing in WoTLK sure made it easier for most people, but they also sky rocketed the competition in STV, as people don't have to backtrack to old zones to level fishing as I did in the past. In my opinion, incoming changes to mounts and mounting speed, will make competition last even less time and it might even attract more people than there are now. I want to appraise Blizzard for making fishing more acceptable for masses, but I want to blame them also for ruining the contest. Wish I was smart enough to try it before WotLK.

Looking back at how fishing skill had serious impact on your chance to catch something, I question why Blizzard has included BoP one hour lures that grant you +100 skill (Glow Worm). Sure they might be very useful for leveling your fishing, but when you're at 450 skill you might as well want to vendor them. At least I did so with some of my lures, but then I decided to save them, in case Blizzard makes them normal lures some time in the future and I will be able to sell them at AH/transfer them to my alts.

In vanilla WoW days you had to have maximum fishing skill and had to use best fishing gear and lures available, so you could fish in Bay of Storms for money. In TBC you had to be well geared too to be able to catch fishes in Terokkar's lakes. Now in WotLK you need a maximum skill and a 75 lure to be able to catch all fishes you need for Fish Feast. Zones that require you to have more than 525 skill don't actually provide better fishes. How many of you actually made more than one Gigantic Feast?

I only need to win STV Extravaganza now for my title (got as close as 39 fishes so far) and I'm wondering what I will do after that. Sure it might be fun for some people to win the contest twice for both the trinket and the pole, but I don't feel like doing it twice and making it harder for other people to get the title. Compared to the Undying title I have, Salty requires much more work and patience, as losing the contest several weeks in a row when you thought that you are about to win it, is really sad. Well, at least I can spend the rest of the contest time to fish for money and possible rare catches (got only one High Test Eternium Fishing Line so far, so saving it for an Arcanite Fishing Pole I hope to win someday).

Overall fishing in WotLK seems uninteresting. Yes, I can make money by selling Fish Feast, as I have about 1k+ Northern Spices on my main char, but I want some excitement from the profession. I got all possible achievements, except for the one mentioned above and I want more. Maybe some really hard stuff like catching all those fishes, that got away. That would keep me busy for some time or catching 100k fishes, which isn't hard, but sure takes more time to get, than 1k for the title. I still have to see fishing rings and some of the rarer TBC fishing drops, such as crocs (make it an achievement too, come on), but all in all every time I think about fishing in WotLK, I get excited and then in a second I tell myself "Wait, there is nothing interesting to do actually."

I'm not an angler, just a fisherman, a sissy by someone's standards as I didn't bother to level my fishing skill to maximum until WotLK arrived, but after that it became a way to pass time in game without mindless killing or farming reputation or whatever.

I won the Tournament last week and I wanted to share with others my strategy for winning.

First off, my husband and I both wanted to win this contest because we both wanted the "Salty" title. So we took turns competing. One Sunday, I'd fish while he ran around looking for pools, keeping the opposite faction off my back, and fishing in other peoples' pools if they were close by. The next Sunday, he'd fish while I ran around doing what he'd done the previous Sunday.

My husband won the tournament on Mother's Day. Everyone figures he won because it was a holiday and everyone was spending time with their family, but I'm sure we still had a lot of competition. I don't think winning it on a holiday makes it any less of a feat than winning it on any other day. You still have to beat everyone that's competing back to the quest giver.

After he won, I was able to compete in the tournament every Sunday and he'd run around scouting for pools and keeping the opposite faction off my back while I fished. Two weeks after he won, I won! It was a very busy Sunday for STV, or so it seemed since I had at least five other people fishing on Yojamba Isle with me when we normally just had one or two. This just goes to show you can fish in a busy location and still win.

Remember that everyone else is fishing near other people, too. There are no "hidden locations" in STV for fishing in this tournament. You want to find the area that has the fewest number of people to pools that you can. Remember it's the number of people to pool that is important, not just the number of people. If you are fishing in an area with 10 people and 20 pools, that's 2 pools per competitor, and you'll be better off there than you would be in an area where three people are fishing, but only two pools spawn.

Our chosen location every Sunday was Yojamba Isle and the beach just north of there. We had a nice circular route that we'd follow. There are usually few people fishing in this spot and little to no one from the opposite faction. We found that more often than not, people would start on Yojamba Isle, but they'd then follow the beach south to Grom'Gol Base Camp and Booty Bay rather than double back for respawned pools. So after the first 3-4 minutes, we usually had Yojamba Isle to ourselves.

The biggest key things to our strategy was 1) having someone scout ahead for the next pool so the one competing knew right where to go next, and 2) because of our watery location, Elixirs of Water Walking! These made it much easier to get around and enabled us to reach pools north of Yojamba Isle before other people. I always brought a stack of 20 with me every Sunday, but I usually only used 2-3 of them.

Good luck!
