If you win the stranglethorn extravaganza, which reward would you take? and why?

i would take the trinket since +fishing doesnt really mean anything now. Also turning into a fish is always nice :)

Looking back at how fishing skill had serious impact on your chance to catch something, I question why Blizzard has included BoP one hour lures that grant you +100 skill (Glow Worm). Sure they might be very useful for leveling your fishing, but when you're at 450 skill you might as well want to vendor them. At least I did so with some of my lures, but then I decided to save them, in case Blizzard makes them normal lures some time in the future and I will be able to sell them at AH/transfer them to my alts.

In vanilla WoW days you had to have maximum fishing skill and had to use best fishing gear and lures available, so you could fish in Bay of Storms for money. In TBC you had to be well geared too to be able to catch fishes in Terokkar's lakes. Now in WotLK you need a maximum skill and a 75 lure to be able to catch all fishes you need for Fish Feast. Zones that require you to have more than 525 skill don't actually provide better fishes. How many of you actually made more than one Gigantic Feast?

I only need to win STV Extravaganza now for my title (got as close as 39 fishes so far) and I'm wondering what I will do after that. Sure it might be fun for some people to win the contest twice for both the trinket and the pole, but I don't feel like doing it twice and making it harder for other people to get the title. Compared to the Undying title I have, Salty requires much more work and patience, as losing the contest several weeks in a row when you thought that you are about to win it, is really sad. Well, at least I can spend the rest of the contest time to fish for money and possible rare catches (got only one High Test Eternium Fishing Line so far, so saving it for an Arcanite Fishing Pole I hope to win someday).

Overall fishing in WotLK seems uninteresting. Yes, I can make money by selling Fish Feast, as I have about 1k+ Northern Spices on my main char, but I want some excitement from the profession. I got all possible achievements, except for the one mentioned above and I want more. Maybe some really hard stuff like catching all those fishes, that got away. That would keep me busy for some time or catching 100k fishes, which isn't hard, but sure takes more time to get, than 1k for the title. I still have to see fishing rings and some of the rarer TBC fishing drops, such as crocs (make it an achievement too, come on), but all in all every time I think about fishing in WotLK, I get excited and then in a second I tell myself "Wait, there is nothing interesting to do actually."

I'm not an angler, just a fisherman, a sissy by someone's standards as I didn't bother to level my fishing skill to maximum until WotLK arrived, but after that it became a way to pass time in game without mindless killing or farming reputation or whatever.

Actually I have come to think of something beside the obvious reasons stated about the extravaganza not beeing discussed in the countless other threads on this forum and the official.

Nowadays the extravaganza is not in the spirit of fishing any longer.

We who like to fish don't mind , relax a bit - drink some Captain rumseys lager and sit down to pull up some fish
We can fish forever not even thinking about rewards or rares just sit down for the relaxation and everything we fish up is a bonus.
The competition are supposed to be an element where you compete with other fishermen , ally and horde often side by side with fishing pole in hand instead of weapon and the one who get 40 in shortest time makes the winner.

Nowadays with the achievement , that spirit is gone , destroyed by people winning at all cost , its not winning in a friendly competition with each other , its winning by all means necessary, many times by people not much into the fishing spirit but into *omg-achievement title 4 the win*.

I won the Tournament last week and I wanted to share with others my strategy for winning.

First off, my husband and I both wanted to win this contest because we both wanted the "Salty" title. So we took turns competing. One Sunday, I'd fish while he ran around looking for pools, keeping the opposite faction off my back, and fishing in other peoples' pools if they were close by. The next Sunday, he'd fish while I ran around doing what he'd done the previous Sunday.

My husband won the tournament on Mother's Day. Everyone figures he won because it was a holiday and everyone was spending time with their family, but I'm sure we still had a lot of competition. I don't think winning it on a holiday makes it any less of a feat than winning it on any other day. You still have to beat everyone that's competing back to the quest giver.

After he won, I was able to compete in the tournament every Sunday and he'd run around scouting for pools and keeping the opposite faction off my back while I fished. Two weeks after he won, I won! It was a very busy Sunday for STV, or so it seemed since I had at least five other people fishing on Yojamba Isle with me when we normally just had one or two. This just goes to show you can fish in a busy location and still win.

Remember that everyone else is fishing near other people, too. There are no "hidden locations" in STV for fishing in this tournament. You want to find the area that has the fewest number of people to pools that you can. Remember it's the number of people to pool that is important, not just the number of people. If you are fishing in an area with 10 people and 20 pools, that's 2 pools per competitor, and you'll be better off there than you would be in an area where three people are fishing, but only two pools spawn.

Our chosen location every Sunday was Yojamba Isle and the beach just north of there. We had a nice circular route that we'd follow. There are usually few people fishing in this spot and little to no one from the opposite faction. We found that more often than not, people would start on Yojamba Isle, but they'd then follow the beach south to Grom'Gol Base Camp and Booty Bay rather than double back for respawned pools. So after the first 3-4 minutes, we usually had Yojamba Isle to ourselves.

The biggest key things to our strategy was 1) having someone scout ahead for the next pool so the one competing knew right where to go next, and 2) because of our watery location, Elixirs of Water Walking! These made it much easier to get around and enabled us to reach pools north of Yojamba Isle before other people. I always brought a stack of 20 with me every Sunday, but I usually only used 2-3 of them.

Good luck!

Like many of you I enjoy fishing in wow. I try to complete all the fishing achievements on all of my toons. After getting every achievement on my alt Paladin, except the turtle and the fishing contest, I again am sad..... You see, I work on Sundays. I have no way of even entering the tournament let alone win.

I wish there was a solution to this problem. I feel that I have earned the title with all that I have done :(

So yesterday during the tourny I had the worst luck ever. First off my first 10 casts yielded 2 Tastyfish. It evened out after that to a more normal catch rate...but I didn't notice because I had other problems........

About 5 minutes in I started lagging BAD. I couldn't even fish properly b/c it wouldn't register the fact I had clicked the bobber until it was far too late. And I would cast and and the bobber wouldn't even appear for several seconds. First I thought it was just my connection and would clear up in a sec (like it normally does), but then it didn't get better. It did finally clear up about 30 seconds after the winner was announced.

So my question is: Is this a common problem? Do people normally have lag? I was going to try turning down my graphics to see if that might help for the next one. Anyone ever tried that and did it work?

I've just started playing a DK, getting it up to lvl 63. There is one skill that they have that makes me think that DK's are going to own the STV Fishing Extravaganza.

That skill is Path of Frost:
Path of Frost
1 Frost
Instant
The Death Knight's freezing aura creates ice beneath his feet, allowing him and his party or raid to walk on water for 10 min. Works while mounted. Any damage will cancel the effect.

Emphasis: Works while mounted.

I can easily see a DK using this to ride his epic mount with his spurs and his riding whip up and down the STV coast along the water, not having to work around water hazards along the way. When he sees a pool, he dismounts and fishes, still standing 10 feet out into the water. After he fishes the pool, he mounts up. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Also I can see this skill as bringing even more twinks into the fray... if you get a DK guildie to Path of Frost your lvl 19 char and your buddies, you can run up and down the coast without fear of getting attacked.

Has anybody worked their fishing up on their DK yet, or encountered a DK using this ability in the STV extravaganza? I'm interested in hearing what luck you've had with STV.

Hi!

I just recently found this site after seeing it many times over the years in comments on wowhead and allahkazam. I must admit I'm impressed, I was not expecting a bunch of number crunchers and theorycrafters.

I've been steadily working on my fishing achievements and my salty title (cant wait :P)

I attempted the Extravaganza today for the third time in two years and actually won! Got my fishing pole and debating about going again next week for the trinket. This win got me 2 achievements away from my salty title.

Best advice I can give anyone for the extravaganza is don't play nice and dont be greedy! If you find yourself at a pool with others joining you, leave asap. If you get a chance to snake the last fish from a pool do so. There was a point where I had four other people joining the pool I was at and I mounted after the first cast, which happened to be the last.

Just a few hours ago I got my 15 pound mud snapper from Eversong Woods outside the gates to SMC on my 2nd cast (note: this was after the 1000+ casts in stonebull lake) thus leaving me one achievement away from salty.

I am really dreading trying to find the mr. pinchy pet, but he cant be that bad seeing as it took a friend of mine ~5 pinchys to get the lil bugger.

Was talking with a friend last night and came to this conclusion.

Since the new epic fishing pole is only +30 fishing, shouldn't the Arcanite Pole be epic now? Especially with all the fuss over how difficult winning the STV competition is, maybe the classic Arcanite Pole could use a purple font change and hell, maybe even a graphical update to make it look like something other than a basic fishing pole.

Ideas? Thoughts?

After thinking of the strategies that could win, i came up with 3. the 2nd and 3rd ideas actually made me win the extravaganza!

A: The Ever Waiting Lineup

Make two people each stand on top of the prize givers to make sure no one can turn in fish. I prefer having a balance druid in Moonkin form or a person wearing a Ogre suit sitting on them, so they can't even select the legs. When people see you there, waiting for you to get off, they will tire out and eventually leave. And when you get there with your prize fish, tell your friends to jump an inch forward so you can turn in your fish from behind your friends backs!

B: Bloodsail Raiders

If you know a ton of bloodsail players, make them go on a raid with Booty Bay, and make sure at least one of them is using technique A. Everyone in the opposing factions will fuss up and start attacking the players. Then it's your chance to reel in your prizes.

C: Wait 'till The Next Week...

This is actually a Glitch. When I lost last week, I logged off holding the Alt button by accident. the next week, The 34 fish I caught were still in my Inventory, with the 1 day expire date still on them. In 5 minutes, we already had a winner!

Today I won my 4th Extravaganza out of the about 9 or 10 contests I have done.
So I'd figure I'd post some strategies here.

I started about 10 minutes before the start of the contest to find a good place. I decided to begin fairly north on the east-coast where it wasn't fairly busy.

As Blizzard made winning the contest an achievement, the contest was more busy than before.
As a general strategy throughout the contest I tried avoiding the directions where everyone was going. I figured if the group, say, all headed south and fished theirselfs enough Stranglekelp and whatever they find, there would be quite a high rate of spawning in the north. This seemed to work allright.

If you know where a big group of people is and you are moving in front of them in the same direction, another thing to do is to make "decoy" pools. With this I mean, you catch 4 fish from one school, and when you have done that, you automatically know that there is not much fish left in the pool (if it didn't disappear already). Though, the competition will not know that those pools are almost empty, and in that way can be used to slow down whole groups of moving fishers.

I think this, with most basic strategies as not fishing in pools with more than 2 or 3 people already fishing there and after a pool is empty, watch where other guys go, and go in a different direction will give you fairly good chance of winning the contest.
