Thanks for the info. I had suspected that the reroll might have come into play, so I started fishing again. Darned if I didn't get disconnected from the server twice (within 2 hrs) while attempting to get fresher data.

At least I can now rest a little easier knowing that the numbers are screwed up and that there exists no method of determining what's a fish and what isn't.

For reference, here is Tigole's explanation. I'm not quite sure what is happening with US servers at the moment, but I wouldn't be surprised if certain data is getting "rolled back".

I've been trying to compile some fishing data before 3.1 comes out. I want to be able to tell if Blizzard has changed the catch rate at my favorite fishing spot.

While doing so, I also wondered exactly what the Achievement tracker counts as a fish. Specifically, i wanted to know whether or not Pygmy Suckerfish was included among them. I strongly suspected it wasn't - but my fish eating pet will eat them, while my meat eating pet won't. I also wondered whether the crate was counted as 1 "other thing" (if at all), or if it was the contents ("other things" being 3 if I got three Frostweave Cloth for example)

So, before I started today's session I jotted down the Achievement tracker's data (Statistics tab)

Fish caught: 8001
Fish and other things caught: 9266

Here is what I caught in Grizzly Hills open water (coordinates 29,57 - near Amberpine Lodge)

Bonescale Snapper: 231
Fangtooth Herring: 72
Glacial Salmon: 57
Pygmy Suckerfish: 40
Reinforced Crate: 9
Dark Herring: 1

(Yes, they CAN be caught in open water! It took nearly 5000 casts here to get it though)

One would think that the first three would be considered "Fish", right? That would mean I caught 360 fish.

Here is what the tracker says after today's session:

Fish caught: 8255 (an increase of only 254!)
Fish and other things caught: 9553: (an increase of a mere 287!!)

No matter how you mess with the numbers... the tracker is off - by a LOT!

============

UPDATE:

While composing the original post, Blizzard did a rolling restart of the servers. Here is what the tracker says NOW:

Fish caught: 8234
Fish and other things caught: 9529

The numbers went down for both of them - and I hadn't even done a thing!

The fishing archievements require catching a certain number of fish. Unfortunately, not everything you catch is counted as "a fish": The achievement does not count "other items".
It is becoming clear that some things we thought were fish are not fish. I think it would be helpful if we could gather information about what is counted as a fish, and what is not. So if you watch your catches carefully, please use this thread to post what you find is counted as a fish and what is not counted as a fish. Hopefully we will quickly see a pattern, without having to "test" every catch.

The way this is currently working on the live realms is that it counts as a fish if it falls under the "Trade Good" category with a "Meat" sub-category. Unfortunately, this leaves out a lot of fish.
In patch 3.0.3 *anything* that is caught via the fishing profession will count towards the criteria. In patch 3.1.0 the wording on the achievement gets changed to "Fish up 25 items" rather than "Catch 25 fish".
Hope this clears things up.

Currently the achievements summary shows a count of all items caught, not just fish. I wonder if this will be set as the count toward achievement progress?

Sickly looking fish caught from Tirisfal Glades also do not count as fish.

In addition, in order to have a fish count you need to properly loot it and put it into your inventory. "Catching and releasing" will give you skillups but it won't trigger the fish counter.

From my experience yesterday, I would like to say that I think the "Fish Counter" is quite buggy in that sometimes it works, other times it does not.

For example, this past weekend I was fishing in Azshara trying to complete "The One that didn't get away" (as awful as that achievement is). When I decided to take a break, my fish counter had gone from 500 to 590 catches. Later that night, when I logged back in and went to Dun Morogh instead (since I think the 15 lb Mud Snapper may be easier to catch - at least I CAUGHT several 10 & 12 lb Mud Snappers unlike my time in Azshara where I caught only 1 9 lb Lobster), my fish counter said I only had 500 catches! Furthermore, after catching several fish there (Raw Brilliant Smallfish & Raw Longjaw Mud Snappers mainly), my fish counter didn't move at all. After getting booted from the server (probably because I then went to go make dinner and didn't log out), I continued to fish in Dun Morogh and the same fish started to register on the fish counter.

Lesson from this Post: The Fishing Counter is buggy so make sure you're getting some fish that register before you rule them off as not counting as a fish.

(Besides, we'll all need to catch a zillion things in Dalaran anyways to achieve several achievements on the way to the "Salty" Title so an inaccurate fish counter here or there isn't really a big deal as long as they get it to work sometime.)

Tasty Fish, Eels, Firefin Snappers, Oily Blackmouths, and of course the lovely Kelp that gets fished up instead of tastyfish.

After doing the Extrazaganze yesterday, despite my 30+ catches (the fun of a pvp server) I had a grand total of 2 catches. Is it a bug, or do fish caught in pools not count towards the total number of fish caught?

Like I mentioned in another post, isome of my fish counts disappear after logging.

I noticed the bug one time while I was tracking my 500 fish achievement. I had 450 fish. Logged Off. When I logged back on I was at 365. I opened a ticket.

Fished it back up to 450. Logged off, and it had dropped to 375. For fun, logged off, and logged on quickly. And the count dropped by one to 374?

Bloated Barbed Gill Trout do not count as fish for me by the way. Guess Hungry Trout are not fish. :-P

Also Deviat Fish don't count as fish.
I'm quite sure clams don't count either, but I can't confirm 100 %. When I started fishing in Azshara I knew my counter was at 25 fish. I counted everything I caught in Azshara in my inventory and realized I should have gotten the next achievement, but I didn't. After that I kept track of the achievement and realized the squids don't count. Caught some more squids, got fed up and went to Wailing Caverns. Didn't check on the clams again.

There's some discussion here and a few other places on the this forum. A lot of catches are not considered "fish". Some are common sense (trunks are not fish), some more confusing (alchemy fish are not fish) and some are outright bugs (Vaughn reported that Winter Squid is not a fish).

If we can collectively pool research on what catches are counted as fish, and which are not, I'll add that information to the Fish Finder for future reference. It is clearly causing a lot of confusion.

Are any of you guys have trouble with fish caught?

In the Achievements Summary: It says:

Fish and other things caught: 662
Fish caught: 378

But I've really only been fishing in non-pools, so I know about 95% of the stuff I've caught is really fish.

I was tracking for the achievement 500 fish. Logged off at 450 fish. Logged back on, and I was at 360 fish. LOL .. things a mess.

Also, Mr Pinchy seems be be granting unlimited wishes at the moment. He's still on cooldown, but he's not dropping below 3 wishes. :-P

As far as I know, the "fish count" achievements only count items that a Hunter's pet would consider "fish". Broadly, anything that can be cooked. Alchemy fish, trunks, junk, and similar do not count. If you fish a lot of Azeroth's pools, it is possible to make no progress towards this achievement at all.

That's what I thought at first as well. Alchemy ingredients not counting as fish was the intuitive answer, and I thought I specifically checked for that possibility. Apparently, my eyes were either deceiving me or there was some kind of display lag at play, for you seem to be right now that I've checked again while fishing in a different area.

I'm fishing for the Crushfish on Menethil Harbor (surprisingly easy to fish there as a Horde without grabbing guard aggro), and it appears that my Firefin Snapper and Oily Blackmouth do not count. I don't think the hunter pet litmus test is really a good one, though. I got into fishing to feed my kitty, myself. Hunter pets that eat fish will eat almost anything remotely fishlike. They even eat the toxic "Do Not Eat" fish from fel pools. I just tried to feed both Oily Blackmouth and Firefin Snapper to my cat, and in both cases, I got the "That food's level is not high enough for your pet." message. If it's something your pet never would have eaten, you instead get, "Your pet doesn't like that food."

I think it's just an oversight, that they're excluding the alchemy fish because they're considered part of a different profession. Or they might be excluding inedible fish. I'm going to try this in some different areas later. I'm curious as to how it will perform with "questionable" fish of other kinds.
