Sad to say, I agree with the above poster - I'm also pretty much giving up on fishing in Northrend due to the sheer number of 'fishing griefers' (standing/mounting on bobbers, fishing from 'claimed' schools, etc.). I appreciate that Blizz want more people to fish, but for me, they're taken most of the fun out of it. And as for the ever-present gankers and gangs on mammoths at the Extravaganza... that's the only achievement missing from my title but even that isn't enough to motivate me to go back there.

I wonder what makes people fish in a school that's already being fished from? In the last few months I've met several people who preferred to fish from "my" school while there were other schools around. While I do understand that sort of behavior during Extravaganza (only before winner is announced), I don't understand what makes people think that it's OK to share a school with someone. If I see someone fishing in a school, I just leave it to them and move to the next one. If there are no schools, I just wait for a new spawn and go to it.

For me fishing from "someone's" school is as disgraceful as collecting herb/ore while someone fights a mob near it. I've even seen people from my own faction doing that sort of things to me, which is a real shame. I think of them as of spoiled kids, who just believe that everything belongs to them and that it's OK to make other people do half of the job for you. I bet they belong to the same group of people who never tips.

Today while farming mats for 60 fish feasts for my guild, I've met three people who just couldn't resist the urge to fish from the same schools as I did, even though there were schools 10-15 yards away from it. With all those new people getting into the fishing, I certainly find it less enjoyable to fish with every passing day. Even though my Badapples list consists mostly of people who ninja loot, play their class poorly or just plain stupid people, it grows longer because I've started adding people who didn't tip or did something disgraceful in my opinion. I just wish Blizzard never bothered to make any changes to fishing at all. Compared to TBC, I see people fishing much more now, which actually makes it less exciting for me. Might as well just go to fish in Azeroth for all the rare fishes, just to be less annoyed of how crowded some pools are.

I am curious if anyone has found an AddOn that changes the color of your cast bar when your bobber bobs? Often times I fish while doing other things and if another fisherman/fisherwoman comes by, I lose sync with my fishing. If anyone knows of an AddOn like this, please let me know.

Looking back at how fishing skill had serious impact on your chance to catch something, I question why Blizzard has included BoP one hour lures that grant you +100 skill (Glow Worm). Sure they might be very useful for leveling your fishing, but when you're at 450 skill you might as well want to vendor them. At least I did so with some of my lures, but then I decided to save them, in case Blizzard makes them normal lures some time in the future and I will be able to sell them at AH/transfer them to my alts.

In vanilla WoW days you had to have maximum fishing skill and had to use best fishing gear and lures available, so you could fish in Bay of Storms for money. In TBC you had to be well geared too to be able to catch fishes in Terokkar's lakes. Now in WotLK you need a maximum skill and a 75 lure to be able to catch all fishes you need for Fish Feast. Zones that require you to have more than 525 skill don't actually provide better fishes. How many of you actually made more than one Gigantic Feast?

I only need to win STV Extravaganza now for my title (got as close as 39 fishes so far) and I'm wondering what I will do after that. Sure it might be fun for some people to win the contest twice for both the trinket and the pole, but I don't feel like doing it twice and making it harder for other people to get the title. Compared to the Undying title I have, Salty requires much more work and patience, as losing the contest several weeks in a row when you thought that you are about to win it, is really sad. Well, at least I can spend the rest of the contest time to fish for money and possible rare catches (got only one High Test Eternium Fishing Line so far, so saving it for an Arcanite Fishing Pole I hope to win someday).

Overall fishing in WotLK seems uninteresting. Yes, I can make money by selling Fish Feast, as I have about 1k+ Northern Spices on my main char, but I want some excitement from the profession. I got all possible achievements, except for the one mentioned above and I want more. Maybe some really hard stuff like catching all those fishes, that got away. That would keep me busy for some time or catching 100k fishes, which isn't hard, but sure takes more time to get, than 1k for the title. I still have to see fishing rings and some of the rarer TBC fishing drops, such as crocs (make it an achievement too, come on), but all in all every time I think about fishing in WotLK, I get excited and then in a second I tell myself "Wait, there is nothing interesting to do actually."

I'm not an angler, just a fisherman, a sissy by someone's standards as I didn't bother to level my fishing skill to maximum until WotLK arrived, but after that it became a way to pass time in game without mindless killing or farming reputation or whatever.

I won the Tournament last week and I wanted to share with others my strategy for winning.

First off, my husband and I both wanted to win this contest because we both wanted the "Salty" title. So we took turns competing. One Sunday, I'd fish while he ran around looking for pools, keeping the opposite faction off my back, and fishing in other peoples' pools if they were close by. The next Sunday, he'd fish while I ran around doing what he'd done the previous Sunday.

My husband won the tournament on Mother's Day. Everyone figures he won because it was a holiday and everyone was spending time with their family, but I'm sure we still had a lot of competition. I don't think winning it on a holiday makes it any less of a feat than winning it on any other day. You still have to beat everyone that's competing back to the quest giver.

After he won, I was able to compete in the tournament every Sunday and he'd run around scouting for pools and keeping the opposite faction off my back while I fished. Two weeks after he won, I won! It was a very busy Sunday for STV, or so it seemed since I had at least five other people fishing on Yojamba Isle with me when we normally just had one or two. This just goes to show you can fish in a busy location and still win.

Remember that everyone else is fishing near other people, too. There are no "hidden locations" in STV for fishing in this tournament. You want to find the area that has the fewest number of people to pools that you can. Remember it's the number of people to pool that is important, not just the number of people. If you are fishing in an area with 10 people and 20 pools, that's 2 pools per competitor, and you'll be better off there than you would be in an area where three people are fishing, but only two pools spawn.

Our chosen location every Sunday was Yojamba Isle and the beach just north of there. We had a nice circular route that we'd follow. There are usually few people fishing in this spot and little to no one from the opposite faction. We found that more often than not, people would start on Yojamba Isle, but they'd then follow the beach south to Grom'Gol Base Camp and Booty Bay rather than double back for respawned pools. So after the first 3-4 minutes, we usually had Yojamba Isle to ourselves.

The biggest key things to our strategy was 1) having someone scout ahead for the next pool so the one competing knew right where to go next, and 2) because of our watery location, Elixirs of Water Walking! These made it much easier to get around and enabled us to reach pools north of Yojamba Isle before other people. I always brought a stack of 20 with me every Sunday, but I usually only used 2-3 of them.

Good luck!

I think you got very luck on the fountain bug.

The fountain, has rather poor detection of fishing status. If your lure lands in the wall of it, or along the very back of it, lure no longer registers as being in the fountain at all. Instead, the server thinks it is down in the sewer.

I haven't seen or heard of this before so I thought I would post it: I caught a Giant Sewer Rat in the fountain of Dal and it gave me the achievement even thought it says to fish it up in the Underbelly. I use fishing buddy and have cast into the fountain 861 times (those coin achievements are a pain). Is this new to the patch?

Fishing is definitely not easier. Every man and his dog is out and about now since the new Dailies were introduced. So much for some peaceful time out =/
Managed to get Dark Herring last night but still no luck with the Sewer Rat, Turtle or Pinchy. I'm still running Old Man Barlo dailies incase i get lucky with the rewards, plus I do a sweep for Pinchy while i'm there.
I already got the Weather Beaten Fishing Hat from Barlo. Hoping the new dailies will throw me some of the other nice stuff. Highly unlikely as the Oracle egg refuses to give me the Drake and the Hylandir Spoils never have a Bear :(

Edit : Got Mr Pinchy last night and the Magical Crawdad on my 1st wish :D.

I am starting to share this feeling. After obtaining my flying mount, I was prepared to spend many nights fishing for Mr Pinchy, but managed to get two in the span of a half hour, probably less than a dozen pools fished. I am also getting annoyed that so many people on my server have the sea turtle mount already. Maybe they are dedicated like myself, but comparing their achievements, they seem to have gotten awful lucky.

My brother-in-law got the 2 ring yesterday. The day before he got eternium line and the day before that he got weather beaten hat (dam you Barlo). It's anecdotal, but one would think they made fishing a bit more "accessible."

I can say that I got Mr. Pinchy this weekend with one pass of the pools in Terrokar Forest. This was the first time I'd even tried for him (and didn't even finish all the pools.)

So, its a possibility that the drop rate was increased, but then again, I could have just gotten lucky with the RNG.

For what its worth, I got my turtle after around 20 casts, and I got my Giant Sewer Rat on the same day while doing my first Dalaran daily in the Underbelly. So take that for what you will.. I personally just think I got lucky, as I had a friend with me for all of my fishing and he's yet to catch any of those things.

Edited to add: just to clarify, I only fished up a Mr. Pinchy, but haven't gotten the pet yet (I get my 3rd wish tonight, so wish me luck.)

A part may be luck. 600 casts for the Sea Turtle is fairly low, but not as low as some have managed. There is quite a lot of evidence that Dark Herring became more common.

I'm not saying you're incorrect at all, in fact, I think 5 or 6 sets of points is plenty of data for indicating statistical significance of what you are implying. Your experimental design is centered around finding the percentage of good fish caught given a particular skill as a percentage of the "no junk skill" (which is the same as the skill that allows for no get-aways in the current system). I was interested in how the new system relates to the current system, and since I used your data (which was designed to fit your experiment and not mine), I could only get 3 data points (you tested 3 zones). So I was saying that my data was not statistically significant.... or so I think, I haven't gone that far with it.

But as you said, the difference between the old minimum and no-get-away skills is 95 points, so the percentage of the old minimum to the no-get-away skill is going to increase as the difficulty of the zone increases. What I would have expected just from thinking about this from a developer's standpoint is that if you are at the old minimum for a zone, regardless of which zone you're in, you would catch the same amount of good fish in each zone. In plain English, if you had a skill of 130 in STV, which is the current min for the zone, you would catch good fish 30% of the time. Likewise, if you had a skill of 480 in the Frozen Sea, which is the current min for the zone, you would catch good fish 30% of the time. This is not the case, as a skill of 480 in the Frozen Sea would net you a 70% chance to catch a good fish.

I'm not saying this change is terrible, but is 70% not just a little absurd for that skill level? If I had the time, I would level another character's fishing to that point and throw a couple hundred casts, but I'm not in that situation (since the patch could be tomorrow) and it's not worth my time honestly. Just as a prediction though, if you have the absolute minimum skill of 480 and tried to fish in the Frozen Sea, I highly doubt you would catch fish even 50% of the time.

You will find some relationship in the percentage difference between the old minimum and no-get-away skills, because this was formerly a constant (95 skill points). As you point out, with only 3 data points it's rather tricky to demonstrate anything - a shallow curve and a straight line relationship can easily be confused. The best argument against the straight line relationship is logic: If you can cast anywhere at skill 1, there should be a theoretical chance of catching something.

That said, I only have 3 sets of 5 or 6 200-catch data points, so it is possible I'm wrong. Circumstantial evidence confirms the pattern in other locations - I've fished for a period, and the amount of junk gained is approximately what the first formula would predict. But the samples aren't large enough (at constant skill) to add to the original analysis.

To your overall conclusion: I agree, it makes fishing in the most difficult waters much easier for those with lower skill. I'm part-way through re-writing the leveling guides to send new anglers up to Northrend at about 300 fishing skill, gear and lures optional...
