nonameform on "Fishing in WotLK"

Looking back at how fishing skill had serious impact on your chance to catch something, I question why Blizzard has included BoP one hour lures that grant you +100 skill (Glow Worm). Sure they might be very useful for leveling your fishing, but when you're at 450 skill you might as well want to vendor them. At least I did so with some of my lures, but then I decided to save them, in case Blizzard makes them normal lures some time in the future and I will be able to sell them at AH/transfer them to my alts.

In vanilla WoW days you had to have maximum fishing skill and had to use best fishing gear and lures available, so you could fish in Bay of Storms for money. In TBC you had to be well geared too to be able to catch fishes in Terokkar's lakes. Now in WotLK you need a maximum skill and a 75 lure to be able to catch all fishes you need for Fish Feast. Zones that require you to have more than 525 skill don't actually provide better fishes. How many of you actually made more than one Gigantic Feast?

I only need to win STV Extravaganza now for my title (got as close as 39 fishes so far) and I'm wondering what I will do after that. Sure it might be fun for some people to win the contest twice for both the trinket and the pole, but I don't feel like doing it twice and making it harder for other people to get the title. Compared to the Undying title I have, Salty requires much more work and patience, as losing the contest several weeks in a row when you thought that you are about to win it, is really sad. Well, at least I can spend the rest of the contest time to fish for money and possible rare catches (got only one High Test Eternium Fishing Line so far, so saving it for an Arcanite Fishing Pole I hope to win someday).

Overall fishing in WotLK seems uninteresting. Yes, I can make money by selling Fish Feast, as I have about 1k+ Northern Spices on my main char, but I want some excitement from the profession. I got all possible achievements, except for the one mentioned above and I want more. Maybe some really hard stuff like catching all those fishes, that got away. That would keep me busy for some time or catching 100k fishes, which isn't hard, but sure takes more time to get, than 1k for the title. I still have to see fishing rings and some of the rarer TBC fishing drops, such as crocs (make it an achievement too, come on), but all in all every time I think about fishing in WotLK, I get excited and then in a second I tell myself "Wait, there is nothing interesting to do actually."

I'm not an angler, just a fisherman, a sissy by someone's standards as I didn't bother to level my fishing skill to maximum until WotLK arrived, but after that it became a way to pass time in game without mindless killing or farming reputation or whatever.

I am curious if anyone has found an AddOn that changes the color of your cast bar when your bobber bobs? Often times I fish while doing other things and if another fisherman/fisherwoman comes by, I lose sync with my fishing. If anyone knows of an AddOn like this, please let me know.

I won the Tournament last week and I wanted to share with others my strategy for winning.

First off, my husband and I both wanted to win this contest because we both wanted the "Salty" title. So we took turns competing. One Sunday, I'd fish while he ran around looking for pools, keeping the opposite faction off my back, and fishing in other peoples' pools if they were close by. The next Sunday, he'd fish while I ran around doing what he'd done the previous Sunday.

My husband won the tournament on Mother's Day. Everyone figures he won because it was a holiday and everyone was spending time with their family, but I'm sure we still had a lot of competition. I don't think winning it on a holiday makes it any less of a feat than winning it on any other day. You still have to beat everyone that's competing back to the quest giver.

After he won, I was able to compete in the tournament every Sunday and he'd run around scouting for pools and keeping the opposite faction off my back while I fished. Two weeks after he won, I won! It was a very busy Sunday for STV, or so it seemed since I had at least five other people fishing on Yojamba Isle with me when we normally just had one or two. This just goes to show you can fish in a busy location and still win.

Remember that everyone else is fishing near other people, too. There are no "hidden locations" in STV for fishing in this tournament. You want to find the area that has the fewest number of people to pools that you can. Remember it's the number of people to pool that is important, not just the number of people. If you are fishing in an area with 10 people and 20 pools, that's 2 pools per competitor, and you'll be better off there than you would be in an area where three people are fishing, but only two pools spawn.

Our chosen location every Sunday was Yojamba Isle and the beach just north of there. We had a nice circular route that we'd follow. There are usually few people fishing in this spot and little to no one from the opposite faction. We found that more often than not, people would start on Yojamba Isle, but they'd then follow the beach south to Grom'Gol Base Camp and Booty Bay rather than double back for respawned pools. So after the first 3-4 minutes, we usually had Yojamba Isle to ourselves.

The biggest key things to our strategy was 1) having someone scout ahead for the next pool so the one competing knew right where to go next, and 2) because of our watery location, Elixirs of Water Walking! These made it much easier to get around and enabled us to reach pools north of Yojamba Isle before other people. I always brought a stack of 20 with me every Sunday, but I usually only used 2-3 of them.

Good luck!

I use fishing buddy and have cast into the fountain 861 times (those coin achievements are a pain). Is this new to the patch?

I'm just wondering, from those who may have tested it on the PTR, do you still get skill raises if you fish up junk?

Really, I don't see much point in the change if you can't. It's cool, getting junk instead of the 'fish got away' messages, but I don't see the point in being able to fish anywhere if you can't get the skill raises.

I've recently (yesterday) continued my long forgotten fishing skill (which was at 51.. yay). From 51 to 150 I have fished in IF, and managed to lure Old Ironjaw on my 230th cast or so.
After this, I decided I'd try Old Crafty... Levelled from 150-225, still no luck.

Now I was wondering if it is possible to level from 225 - 300 / 350 in Orgrimmar, while I keep trying to get that old fishy. I don't know much about fishing, so I'm not really sure HOW one levels aproprietly, have been following the tips on this website, and was wondering if this is possible.

[Crocolisks in the city] has changed a bit in 3.0.8, and could annoy many.

First off, as with the other fishing dailies, it takes multiple casts to reel in the quest fish. It took me 12 casts to get my Baby croc. I was fishing in Orgrimmar for Old crafty since I heard his drop rate increases to an almost guarentee. However, in those 12 casts. Old crafty did not appear once. It seems Blizzard have fixed this "bug" so having the quest will no longer drop Old crafty at an increased rate. This means, as far as I can see, people will have to go back to grinding for the Elusive fish of The Capital cities.

The [Shrimpin' Ain't Easy] quest, against my first impression, does not drop on every catch now. It will use the drop rate of Barbed Gill Trout as it replaces that fish on the catch table.

The [Felblood Fillet] quest now requires multiple casts. Caught one in 15 casts.

The [Bait Bandits] quest also requires multiple casts. Caught on in 7 casts (Confirmed by "Salty" Norrinir)

The quest [The one that got away] requires multiple casts. (Posted by Norrinir)

Seems the only quest really effected is [crocolisks in the city] in relation to Old crafty.

Pre WOTLK, i played a warlock, and basically completed every fishing achievement, got every rare item, and had total maxxed out fishing.

I rerolled death knight for wrath of the lich king, and basically i've been avoiding fishing for months, because the thought of going for those rare drops, mr. pinchy, trying the fishing contest again, it was just too daunting for me, I couldn't bear the thought of going through it all again. I trained fishing in december after levelling, and fished up old crafty in orgrimaar by using the crocolisk in the city quest trick, but apart from that i hadn't even picked up my rod.

This sunday - i had nothing to do, so i took a deep breath, and thought to myself - i'll make a start. I started fishing in ironforge trying for old ironjaw - got 200 fishing and nothing. Looked at the time and saw it was an hour till the fishing competition - and thought to myself - i may as well go and see if i can get myself some boots or a hat.

I got to stranglethorn vale, and had a quick look for a pool of junk to get the find fish book since it makes it easier - found one, got the book, set my hearthstone in booty bay and got started. I have NEVER been so lucky with tastyfish schools. As the contest started, i had 4 pools around me right at the start, every catch was a tastyfish, and within 20 minutes, i had my 40 fish, hearthstoned, and won the competition with 215 fishing.

Now - i was pretty happy at this point, having completed what i thought would be the toughest hurdle on my first attempt. I went to nat pagle, took and completed the artisan fishing quest, and then went back to ironforge expecting to max out fishing while getting ironjaw. 10 casts later - ironjaw was in my inventory.

Realising there wasn't much more I could do, i went and levelled fishing a little bit in stormwind, to see if i could get a 1 ring. This was the only point that I was unlucky - i got to 315 fishing, no ring. But i wasn't that bothered - there was no related achievement so it didn't really matter.

I went to bed on sunday happy, not much more to say than that.

Monday night i was busy with my guild in Naxxramas, finally got 'The undying' title in naxxramas and my new 310% speed mount. Didn't really have time to do any fishing, but i decided that since i had tuesday free i would try to do some more constructive fishing.

Tuesday - I started dalaran coin fishing. With 315 fishing. I had to go down into underbelly and get underbelly elixirs quite regularly, which was a royal pain. I probably spent 3 hours in total, but by 1am i had every single coin - i got the three achievements in a row, didn't even have to wait long for my last gold coin.

Wednesday morning - I decided to go and fish some highland schools in the morning before work. Third pool i fished in - first cast - was a Mr. Pinchy. First use gave me a magical crawdad pet. I went to work happy, and when i came home from work - I decided to try for 'The one that didn't get away', it being the only hard fishing achievement i had left.

I spent maybe, 20 minutes in total fishing in pools of herring before i got the dark herring - at this point i was in utter disbelief. I spent the rest of the night cleaning up all the easy fishing achievements, and now i'm just missing one daily quest for Old Man barlowned before i get my salty title. I managed to catch up with my old fishing main in just 4 days of fishing, with minimal effort.

Has anyone else ever been incredibly lucky like this? I just had to share it because i'm honestly still in disbelief. Here's my armory, you can check the date of the achievements: http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-achievements.xml?r=Jaedenar&n=Zimm

I just logged on to the PTR and noticed they changed the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat.
There was a small patch today.

Was:
101 Armor.
+94 stamina.
Use: Attach a lure to your equipped fishing pole, increasing Fishing by 75 for 10 minutes.

Now:
101 Armor
+40 Stamina
+40 Spirit
Equip: Increased Fishing +5
Use: Attach a lure to your equipped fishing pole, increasing Fishing by 75 for 10 minutes.

Not as much Stam now but far more usefull IMO.
It totally kills the Lucky Fishing Hat.

Of course, this is all still subject to futher change befor release.

NETTLE FISH:
You really can't beat River's Heart in the Sholazar Basin, you can pretty much farm schools till the cows come home.

DRAGONFIN ANGELFISH:
Westwind Refugee Camp west of Agmar's Hammer in the Dragonblight has abundant Dragonfish pools. Also, there are no mobs, so it's easy for even low LVLs to cash in on the lucrative Dragonfin.

RHINO MEAT:
For those high levels trying to max cooking, you know that Rhino Meat farming can be a huge pain. I found an awesome spot in the Storm Peaks - just go to the Camp Tunkalo FP near the Temple of Life. There are 2 huge Rhino herds and a few strays that run around near the Temple of Life. With a bit of AoE, it's easy to pull the whole herds (5+ at a time) - i farmed about 3 stacks in about 3 hrs.

Please share yours :)

Fellow fishermen, I want you to post your statistics. Show me the amount of catches you did in order to get the notorious items acquired through fishing! Relevant items with my statistics listed below:

The one that didn't get away - 15 pound mud snapper - 3 catches.
Mr. Pinchy's crawdad box - 30 schools, around 90 catches. Got it on the first wish.
The Coin Master - ~2000 catches.
Dalaran sewer rat - 1100 catches and counting.
Old Crafty - ~1500 catches.
Old Ironjaw - N/A
The 1 ring - ~700 catches (got it while fishing for Old Crafty, started fishing for it at fishing skill 1).

I'd say I'm pretty lucky even though I ran into some issues with the dalaran fountain. :> Anyone luckier/unluckier than me?

I've just completed leveling cooking and fishing from 1 to 300 using your guide at http://www.elsanglin.com/fishing_and_cooking_horde.html

The guide is great, however I consisitenly go way more fish per stage than the guide suggested. I believe it is because the rule of thumb about the number of caught fish per skill point is not accurate. For example from 290-300 I caught about 120 fish. From 290-298 it was about 9-10 fish per point and from 298-300 it was 13 fish and then 15 fish. This is just an example as it happened from about skill 150 on.

Not a huge deal but thought perhaps more experimentation is needed to determine the actual fish per level instead of the at http://www.elsanglin.com/role_of_skill.html

Thanks for the guides they are great. Now that I'm at 300 I guess I need to level a bit more. (This is on my druid who is only 44.)

(Anyone Else Got Fishing Storys?)

Hi, I'm Noff, and I just started getting into fishing about two weeks ago, before WotLK came out. I started off by trying too catch Old Ironjaw, and about 1000 fish later, I caught him. Everyone though I was crazy for fishing, saying it was boring, and a waste of time. After I caught Ironjaw, I stormed into Orgrimmar and hid behind a rock too catch Old Crafty, after getting two shot by a lvl 80 mage, gah, I caught Old Crafty after 100 casts, woot!

After catching all those, I decided to give Mr. Pinchy a try, but no luck. So I spent the whole day trying to catch, The One That Didn't Get Away. After fishing for the whole day, I caught my 15 Pound Mudsnapper in the Elwynn forest.

The next day I decided I wont do anything else, until I caught Mr. Pinchy, after about 3 days of non stop fishing, I was about to give in, when all of a sudden there he was. I bragged too all my friend when my first wish from him was the Crawdad :D.

After getting all I could in Azeroth and Outlands, I decided to try and best Northrend, Got my Grandmaster fishing and stormed off into Northrend, only to get killed by a level 76 Giraffe (Turns out they dont like Shadow Word: Death) I bought a port to Dalaran.

Spending about an hour looking for the fountain, I gave up and when into the underbelly to try and catch the giant rat. I prepared for a whole day of fishing. But after 20 casts, I caught him! I have some fishing luck :D

Now I'm in Dalaran, trying to get the famous coins of fountain coiniesness!

--

It's now 9:11 PM Canada people time. So far I've caught all the copper and silver, need 3 more gold coins. Caught about 500 goldfish, who knew catching goldfish needed such skill, and tasted so good ! lol JK, I only ate about 60 of them for fun.

10:15 PM CPT. Caught all of the coins. Got a coin I can flip! Best idea ever! Got bored of it after the first flip.

--

It's Sunday and I was sitting in Dalaran, wondering what to do. Then I though, aww crap, 5 minutes untill the Fishing Contest starts. Went to SW and flew as fast as the gryphon could go, which is the same as the other gryphons. I got to the Contest like, 30 seconds late, which was valuable time. So I hopped on my Zebra, thats right, A Zebra, And I fished like hell. I managed to get 35 fish before a winner was declared. I cried. Not really. Ok maybe a little. In the end I traded my fish for like. 5G, kool. To bad I didn't get a rare fish.

Now i'm sitting in Stranglethorn, wondering what i'm going too do. Am I going to get past level 70? Trying and get the fishing nodes in Northrend? Or just run around in circles on my awesome Zebra?

--

Monday, Dec 1 (omg 18 more days until holidays) just fished some nodes in Northrend, and decided to quest in Howling Fjord so I could get levels too fish in other parts, nothing exciting.... got some recipes, happy cupcakes and bad clams? wtf? who would eat bad clams?

--

Noffs log: Seadate: Awesome (Dec 02-08). After questing in the Howling Fjord, I came across a giant lift, being the smart guy I am, instead of taking said lift, I simply jumped off the cliff, since I was a priest, I simply floated into the sea. I stumbled upon a school of manta rays, and I thought, "kool, manta rays." and they give a haste bonus, "shwing", Being the curious half goat half humanoid thing I am, I ventured further into the sea, and I noticed, shiny parts of water, but it wasn't a school of fish. I kept fishing Borean Man O' War (If anyone knows what it's used for, post) Then I noticed an orca swim by. I thought, " holy crap, an orca." O finished today by cooking my spoils, I wonder how you cook a manta ray.....

Hello Folks.

I am four points away from 375.

And I don't have a single fish yet in the Rare Fish Achievement.

How did you get them? I have been fishing like mad since I hit 70. (Middle of last week) and at various locations.

I've been trying to get lightning eels but no such luck lots and lots of other fish. So far all I've got the seemed rare was a 23 pound redfin snapper. But that wasn't in the list.

Let me know.

I posted this in the WoW suggestion forum:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Topic Fishing- old crafty, old ironjaw

Since a lot of people will be getting these obscure fish due to the added achievements, I was thinking it would be cool if they were changed to be one handed instead of specifically offhand items. In that same line of thinking it would be cool if they had some kind of a 2 set bonus proc like, "Chance on hit- target is afflicted with walleye vision."

Walleye vision would place a debuff on the target that would make all other NPCs and players look like frogs or maybe change that players view to be distorted like its namesake.

Post some more cool procs these fish could do.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you guys think this is cool post your ideas. Thanks!
