Been lurking here for a while but i thought i'd share my thoughts on the Kalu'ak Derby.
Okay so after having no luck with the Fishing Lottery- I mean Derby so far (I haven't caught a single shark and fished the full hour in every contest so far^^) I've been looking at a few ways one COULD increase their chances of winning.

A few factors that can affect chances of winning:
How close are the pools you're fishing?
How many other people are fishing those pools?

These are the first two which spring to mind. But how about these:
How far apart are everyone else's fishing pools?
How MANY FISH are in their pools? ; )

These last two are of interest to us because we CAN control them.
How? Well although it involves spending a good few hours beforehand for relatively small gain, some form of "preparation" is possible. I've noted that people tend to stop fishing pools as much a couple of hours before the contest starts. Starting last week i have begun "forcing" pools into a close group. In Grizzly Hills I succeeded (after a good half hour) Of emptying most of the southern Imperial Manta Ray pools and filling most of the eastern ray schools.

However, this week i'm going to try something else: fishing as many pools as i can to reduce the number of fish in each pool (apart from mine on the east coast : P) Effectively all one does is fish 2-3 catches out of each pool so that only 1 or 2 fish remain in each pool. The theory being that competitors will take longer travelling between useless pools while I catch the shark and win : D Obviously it's gonna take some time to go around every pool in Northrend, and sure some lucky randomer with a fishing skill of 23 may still get it on his first catch, but it has to help SOMEHOW!

I'm not sure if some will view this as cheating, but I for one think this is perfectly acceptable : )

What do you guys think? Too much effort for too little gain?

Also still wearing max fishing gear out of paranoia incase the skill does have some affect on your chances. :P any proof of that yet?

Anyways thanks for reading, sorry if post is a bit lengthly. Will let you know if i end up with some nice boots or a broken computer and a sore fist!

The fishing/cooking leveling guide seems to suggest Azshara is your best bet for getting to 300. However in my experience the drop rate is crummy. Why not instead advise people to head to Winterspring for 50%+ drop rate on Raw Whitescale Salmon for used in the Baked Salmon recipe?

I've just completed leveling cooking and fishing from 1 to 300 using your guide at http://www.elsanglin.com/fishing_and_cooking_horde.html

The guide is great, however I consisitenly go way more fish per stage than the guide suggested. I believe it is because the rule of thumb about the number of caught fish per skill point is not accurate. For example from 290-300 I caught about 120 fish. From 290-298 it was about 9-10 fish per point and from 298-300 it was 13 fish and then 15 fish. This is just an example as it happened from about skill 150 on.

Not a huge deal but thought perhaps more experimentation is needed to determine the actual fish per level instead of the at http://www.elsanglin.com/role_of_skill.html

Thanks for the guides they are great. Now that I'm at 300 I guess I need to level a bit more. (This is on my druid who is only 44.)

I've been working fishing and cooking together on my Death Knight, since Blizzard saw fit to start both skills at untrained. In the course of using the Fishing and Cooking guide, I've decided to make some notes that El may (or may not) want to incorporate into the guide. Keep in mind that I'm using the Horde version for the Azeroth portion.

* When you pick up the Cooking skill, be sure to learn Spice Bread as well, and purchase 60 each of Simple Flour and Mild Spices, and make three stacks of the food. This will give you a cheap head-start on your Cooking (about 40 points), and add a total of about a minute to your overall time spent.

* To save time, pick up your Expert Cooking and Fishing guides before you start, so that you don't have to take a break to get them. Also if you're Horde (particularly if you're also a Death Knight, since you're right there) swing by the Hinterlands and pick up Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000 to keep in your inventory if you don't already have it; this will save you unnecessary trips later.

* In the Horde portion of the guide, I found a part of Sun Rock Retreat in Stonetalon Mountains where the inn runs very close to the lake. If you stand in the right spot you can gain rested XP while fishing.

* The inn at Freewind Post in Thousand Needles sells the cheese needed for the Artisan cooking quest, and it's directly in the flight path from Mudsprocket to Gadgetzan, so I would recommend picking it up there rather than in Desolace as the guide suggests... particularly if you picked up the Expert Cooking Guide already, which would eliminate traveling to Desolace at all (with the exception of the Artisan Fishing quest).

* In the Outland portion of the guide, it states that you should vendor/ditch all the Barbed Gill Trout. I would recommend instead picking up the recipe for Blackened Trout, which can be trained at 300 and can be purchased from Gambarinka (Horde, Zabra'Jin) or Doba (Alliance, Orebor Harborage). This recipe will stay yellow until 320 and green until 340, and since you'll be fishing up about 200 of them, there's no reason not to use this recipe. Also at around 315 or 320 Cooking (I don't remember which) Kylene <Barmaid> at the World's End Tavern in Shattrath sells a Stewed Trout recipe which will get your cooking up to 335 (Yellow) / 355 (Green).

That's as far as I've gotten; right now I'm just trying to get my Fishing and Cooking skills comparable to my level (I'm 67 now, so about 335 skill).
