The logic is that you fish in The Frozen Sea, and catch fish for both Cuttlesteak and Gigantic Feast. That's a good balance, for smooth progression through to 450, because you aren't wasting too many non-junk catches. Of course you will catch slightly more junk, so I see that it might not feel that way.

The reason it's like this is historic: It was a lot more important before patch 3.3, when very few recipes took you to 450 reliably, and most anglers would want to use a feast for the final 10-20 points of cooking. Even more important a year ago, when Northern Spices were harder to buy. Although I rewrote the guide for 3.3, I probably should have changed the emphasis, so that The Frozen Sea is more clearly an option, rather than the recommended path: The "single dish" and Wintergrasp options are very viable, and will suit a lot of anglers.

I suppose, right now, almost anywhere in Northrend is viable for those final few skill points, which inevitably makes a single method hard to agree on.

Added: Looking back through the numbers, I'm inclined to agree with you - there really is no need for The Frozen Sea option now, particularly once we consider the hassle of finding the meat, buying extra recipes, and so forth. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try and re-write it with the patch 3.3.3 update.

Love you, love your show!

I'm curious why you recommend Cuttlefish as the recipe of choice for cooking 400+?
It's about the hardest fish to get to / find. The rest of the guide did me ever so well, but after figuring out the situation I spent more awards and bought the Imperial Manta Steak recipe to finish out my cooking. Also, the single-recipe method was so close to perfect efficiency (less than 10 "wasted" (2 cast per skill point) that the gigantic feast method seems completely unnecessary.
Thanks!

I tested this on the Public Test Realms, by leveling up in a low-skill and high-skill area... and I did not find any difference in the average number of catches required to gain a skill point. It is possible it changed late during testing, but I have no evidence of that.

Keep in mind that skill-ups are somewhat random, so beware of anyone that tells you "in one place it took 3 catches to gain a skill point, and in another place it took 5". That randomness happens everywhere. You need a lot of catches to average the randomness out.

I was talking with my Dad today about leveling his fishing. He was saying he was finally going to do it because he had heard that, with the 3.1 patch, if you fish in areas that are "Fishing Skill Appropriate" you will gain skill points faster.

So while it would be nice for him to level his fishing so I don't have to catch his Dragon Fin for him anymore I don't think what he heard is correct.

I have not been able to find any evidence of this at all. I have been through the patch notes and forums here and on the main WoW boards with nothing close to that being stated.

Has anyone here heard of that or, more importantly seen any evidence of it?

I think it is likely that he is reading this statement from the patch notes and seeing what he wants to see.

Every catch has the potential for fishing skill gains

That in conjunction with the fact that every cast is a catch and the shortened timer is what will speed up leveling fishing but that where you fish has nothing to do with how fast you level.

Thanks for the comment, Astrelle.

The source of all the recipes used should be shown, but I'll add a single reference list.

The guide is intended for power-leveling, so is optimised to reduce travel time. Hence the Horde guide spends a lot of time visiting a few zones very close to the Undercity.

But I know that it is used at lower level, so try to find a method that is still useful. This has become much harder to write with patch 3.1, because the places fish can be caught still scale up with level, yet only level 10 is required to catch and cook (almost) everything.

Feralas certainly can be used as an alternative to the Western Plaguelands, but it isn't terribly suitable for those at low level. I guess mid-level Horde have a specific problem getting through the Bulwark. The Alliance guide gives the option of traveling up from Hillsbrad Foothills, which is safe at about level 20+, so I'll add that to the low-level suggestions.

Now the Eastern Plaguelands are a real problem at low level, but so is ever similar zone. For example, the only part of Feralas with the same fish is Jademir Lake, which is surrounded by level 60-ish elites. I think the best suggestion for low-level Horde is to swim up to the Bay of Storms in Azshara.

Any other thoughts from others that have tried using the leveling guides?

I don't really like the new guides, particularly the fishing/cooking one. One of the things I liked about the guide was it told us were all the recipes are... no more. There seem to be a lot of recipes not told where they are (atleast in the horde guide.)

And why go to Plaguelands? Ferelas doesn't have the day/night fishes anymore? Lowbee anglers certainly can't fish there. I guess the guides are more for people that are 80.

Quite true. The guide is complete and accurate except for the fish numbers. Could probbaly just not give fish caught numbers and instead just say at what skill you'll get on average.

In my run through I pretty much turned every cooking recipe used grey with well over a hundred fish left over.

True. The number of catches required per skill-up point keeps on changing with each patch. I am fairly sure the current skill-up is bugged, since it makes no sense to increase the number of catches at low-level, just when the skill cap has been raised. I guess I should probably re-write the guide now. It shouldn't radically alter the overall strategy, just the number of fish caught.

I've just completed leveling cooking and fishing from 1 to 300 using your guide at http://www.elsanglin.com/fishing_and_cooking_horde.html

The guide is great, however I consisitenly go way more fish per stage than the guide suggested. I believe it is because the rule of thumb about the number of caught fish per skill point is not accurate. For example from 290-300 I caught about 120 fish. From 290-298 it was about 9-10 fish per point and from 298-300 it was 13 fish and then 15 fish. This is just an example as it happened from about skill 150 on.

Not a huge deal but thought perhaps more experimentation is needed to determine the actual fish per level instead of the at http://www.elsanglin.com/role_of_skill.html

Thanks for the guides they are great. Now that I'm at 300 I guess I need to level a bit more. (This is on my druid who is only 44.)
