Bakkhus on "Old Ironjaw in 4 Casts"

Yep, I did it in 4 casts. Two weeks of reading and prepping, locations mapped, times figured out when to play... costumes, disguises, and potions on hand... empty bags to go...

Sunday night at 1:30ish am (technically monday) Took the front door in, used Orb of Deception on a Brewfest Ram to try to fool people. Guards were more of a pain. A DK and Rogue jumped me almost to the pool/cavern area.

Ran back, watched around my body, coast was clear, ran over to the wall, healed, did a /sleep to test it out, threw out 4 casts and...

http://i42.tinypic.com/21b9j0g.jpg
(excuse guild chat cursing and miscounting, I was freakin out)

Not sure how solid the proof is, but time is shown, my orb of deception cooldown is just barely gone, only 3 fish in pack (you can see my dead skely in distance).

To anyone saying I was lucky, its true, but I also finished my entire fishing achievement tree up that day and got "Salty". I already had the Old Crafty from a few days of fishing a couple weeks earlier, and about 4 days in Mulgore getting a fish for the other rare. The rest just came. Not to mention 2 years of fishing contest to win... luckily I was first on my server after I transferfed from Bloodhoof to Area 52 the week it opened during BC release week.

Now just see me in my full getup sitting in my fishing chair in Dal somtimes. Good times and Good Luck.

I would just add to face your back to the wall, and fish out to the right of the wheel. If you fish towards it's top, most casts will not let you mouse over the bait.

Well after being very lucky getting Magical Crawdad on my first pinchy (571 Furious crawdads I counted) and Old Crafty in under 50 casts.

I thought how about getting Ironjaw.

I finally got fishing buddy, and now on my 1050 cast.

No luck yet =P

How long did it take others?

New to the board, but have been 'fishing' around here for a while ;)
I've been trying for Ol' Ironjaw for a while now, up to nearly 600 casts and no luck. Is there a minimum of casts required to fish him up? or is it jut pot luck?

So, I decided to fish for Old Ironjaw today for basically the first time...

I had casually done so before, but didn't really try very hard, and gave up to do other things after a few minutes.

This time was different though, this time my plan was to stay committed until I caught this elusive beastie.

42 minutes and 40 seconds later, I see green text, and to my amazement, I've done it... Old Ironjaw is mine!

Total fish caught: 91

Next up, Old Crafty!

Me: Magtheridon-US Horde
Where: Ironforge
When: 3AM EST 24 April 2009

I caught him in exactly 60 casts. I'm a rogue, so I stealthed into The Forlorn Cavern, the city was essentially empty so I had high hopes. I did /sleep to conceal myself as much as possible, and began casting while talking on guild chat and watching [2. Trade] fly by. I was just about to hearth back to Dal and hit the hay when BAM, up comes Old Ironjaw.

Just wanted to tell my story.

Having tried for Old Ironjaw a few times in Forlorn Cavern, but being ganked constantly,
I remembered that Old Ironjaw can be fished in the lava too.

So I rode in into the great forge, and dropped down into the lava, knowing i would die.
However there is a hidden ledge between the wall and the rotating wheel, which is easy to find as a ghost. (from memory the coords are (50.4, 47.9 or 50.4, 49.7)
basically when you swim underneath the wheel, you get stuck. thats how you know your at the ledge. now simply jump up on is as ghost, and come back to live.

You need to set your camera distance to max. Look at your toon, directly from above, and then tilt you camera, so that the wheel is on you left side, and you can only see lava in your buttom right corner. that way you can just see you lure.

Allies has to be lucky to see you, or know your there. but more importantly the 2 housr i spend there i got spotted twice, and both times the ally died trying to kill me, as they fell in the lava.

I will try to add some screen shots, to this post

Happy Fishing

I think items that can currently be equipped in the off-hand but don't really do anything other than look cool should be changed to one-hand equip instead of off-hand. For instance, if Old Ironjaw and Old Crafty could be equipped in either hand, wouldn't it be awesome to walk around Dalaran dual-wielding Azeroth's most legendary urban fish? I can't think of a downside. I doubt twinks would get any unfair advantage from them, since the only stat they have is stamina, and aside from twinks, who wields OI and OC for any reason other than to look awesome?

I actually had the same idea a while back when I got rather excited about the idea of carrying around a rose and a wine glass at the same time (don't ask), then realized to my chagrin that I couldn't do it because they're both off-hand items.

At any rate ... if anyone else has any thoughts about this, whether you agree or simply think I'm a nut, please respond! Perhaps we can petition Blizzard to fix this. :)

Just the other night, I finally completed all the requirements to be Salty and received my title. It took a lot of forum scouring and a lot of reading to gather the right information, so I figured I'd post a short log of all that I did and how I did it, to help others on their way.

Of course, I would attribute almost all of my success to El, whose site is just the definitive source of fishing information for WoW players, bar none. Thanks El!

I'll go through the achievements briefly, one at a time, and tell how I finished them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Northrend Angler - Fish 10 nodes in Northrend

(copied from Thottbot, credit to kitkibbles)

*Fangtooth Herring* - fresh waters in Howling Fjord

*Musselback Sculpin* fresh water in Borean Tundra (I got mine in Lake Hum'uya located directly south east of Amber ledge).

*Borean Man O' War* Off the coast in Borean Tundra (I got mine at the shrine of scales located just off the southwest coast of riplash strand).

*Imperial Manta Ray* off the coast in Borean Tundra (I got mine at riplash strand but there are tons in dragonblight at Moa'ki Harbor as well).

*Nettlefish* freshwater in Sholazar Basin... these fish are like fleas and can be found in all lakes and rivers there. I got mine in the seabreach flow just east of nesingwary base camp.

*Dragonfin Angelfish* Lake Indu'le just north of moa'ki harbor in dragonblight. I didn't see them anywhere else but they could be in other freshwater locations too of course.

*Glassfin Minnow* freshwater in crystalsong forest. They were everywhere in the river that runs through the area.

*Glacial Salmon* freshwater in Grizzly Hills. I got mine in the river located just south of Zeb'halak.

*Deep Sea Monsterbelly* salt water off the icebergs south of Unu'pe in the frozen sea, Borean tundra.

*Moonglow Cuttlefish* salt water off the icebergs south of Unu'pe in the frozen sea, Borean tundra.

----------------------------------------------

Master Angler of Stranglethorn

Ah, the dreaded fishing contest. This was my last achievement for Salty. I won after 2 serious attempts. This is exactly what I did-

- Hearthstone to Booty Bay Inn
- I fished the area directly south of Grom'gol. There is a water fall which separates the land. I started on the side furthest from Grom'gol. I fished exclusively in the first 6 nodes and only the first 6 nodes. When there were no nodes (which only happened once) I sat and waited for them to reappear.
- I used water walking potions to fish the nodes which were across the waterfall break in the coast.
- I caught 7 Oily Blackmouths, 1 Stranglekelp and 1 Firefin and still won the competition.
- I won in exactly 20 minutes and 41 seconds.
- The area only had 3-5 other fishermen when I was there. When there were 2 people at a node, I'd skip it and move to the next node, always staying between my 6 designated nodes. If there was not a fishing node with less than 2 people, I would run back and forth waiting for the next one to spawn.
- I used a macro to track the amount of Tastyfish I had. It was this...

#showtooltip Speckled Tastyfish

- The first time I tried, I caught 9 Oily Blackmouths and was quite angry at Blizzard for implementing a RNG in an already very luck driven competition. I lost at 19m 55s, with 31 fish. :)
------------------------------

The One That Didn't Get Away

- I fished in Thunderbull Lake in Mulgore for the 15 pound Mudfish. It took me 1310 casts. I thought about going for the Herring, but it seemed like a hassle, because I wasn't sure if it dropped only from the Herring nodes or from the actual open sea.
- I parked myself in front of the TV at home, picked out three good movies, and started fishing.
- I set my cast to hotkey 1.
- I would press 1, place the mouse icon over the bobber, then proceed to watch my show. With the sound turned up, and no one else fishing, I could just reach down instinctively and right-click to pick up the fish. I would then repeat the process.
- I had Auto-Loot on and didn't worry about casting too fast, because the 15 pound mudfish is NOT BoP, so it does not require you to accept it.

-------------------------------

Mr. Pinchy

- I do the daily fishing quest in Terrokar anyway, so whenever I would do that, I would empty out all the Highland Mixed Schools in the area. This means the lake by the alliance town, the lake by the horde town, and the bigger lake up in Skettis. 3-5 nodes in both the Horde and Alliance rivers, and 7-10 in the Skettis area.
- They spawn rather slow, so after cleaning out the nodes I would find something else to do for 2 hours then come back.
- I caught Mr. Pinchy the first time in just 31 casts (very luck, I know). But this resulted in 2 Benevolent Mr. Pinchys and 1 Pinchy Blessing, so I had to do it again.
- I caught him again after about 600 casts. The first prize was a gift-box, and the second was the pet.
- I made sure that I paid attention while fishing, because he is BoP, so you need to click accept.

---------------------------------

I smell a Giant Rat

- In the underbelly of the sewer, on the pier next to the Inn, is where I fished for this guy.
- It took me about 1000 casts.
- He is BoP too, so watch out and don't go too fast.
- My best advice for not burning yourself out on fishing is to start chatting in /1 or /2 or in /g.

---------------------------------

Deadliest Catch

- I solo'd this as a 74 Frost Mage.
- First, you need to be in a raid group, so have a friend or stranger group with you, start a raid group, then head in on your own.
- Advise the person you are grouped with that he or she will be unable to complete any non-raid quests while you are doing this. (Took us forever to figure out why my girlfriend could not pick up mushrooms for the cooking daily in Dalaran hehe)
- You must enter ZG twice- First to pick up the jugs of ale which are at Nat Pagle's fishing site on the north side of the big lake which Hakkar is in the middle of.
- Then you must take them to Nat Pagle in Dustwallow Marsh and he'll give you what you need to fish up this guy.
- Then you need to fish the mudskunk nodes which are in the exact same place in ZG. (I fished the mudskunks the first time I went so I could just go straight to the boss the second time)
- Once you have the mudskunks and the lure from Nat Pagle, you can go to Nat Pagle's fishing site in ZG and fish up the boss and get the achievement.
- Fishing up the boss is all you need to do. No need to try to solo him ;)
- Once I fished him up, I Invisibilitied and ran out. Done.

----------------------------------------

The Scavenger

(credit to jamras on thottbot)

Steam Pump Flotsam: Zangarmarsh, all over the lakes
Schooner Wreckage: Southshore, near dock and along coast line
Floating Wreckage: Tanaris, coast
Bloodsail Wreckage: STV, coast south of Grom'Gol
Waterlogged Wreckage: STV, Lake Nazferiti and along river

----------------------------------------

The Coin Master

This is accomplished by fishing the entire collection of coins out of the tiny fountain in Dalaran.

- Copper is the easiest to catch, Silver second and Gold hardest.
- Only Gold coins can be thrown back into the pool to increase your chances of getting more coins.
- The buff from tossing gold coins lasts only 2 minutes, which seems to go by VERY quickly. Make sure you don't mis-click or go afk while you have the buff.
- I finished Silver before Copper, then Gold last. The last Gold coin I needed was Thrall's.
- There is a fishing vendor right next to the fountain who has lures for you to use.
- You CAN fish the same coin out of the fountain more than once. In fact, I had a stack of about 10 Danath's copper coin when I was done. I sold the dupes to the vendor.
- I had many instances of "Your cast didn't land in fishable water".
- It took approximately 500 casts to acquire the whole collection. This can obviously be reduced or increased by the random number generator, but you can help yourself by using Gold Coins effectively.

-----------------------------------------

Outland Angler

Not much to tell here, it's pretty easy.

(credit to rozlyn on Thottbot)

Brackish Mixed School - Terokkar and Zangarmarsh
Bluefish School - Nagrand
Mudfish School - Nagrand
School of Darter - Terokkar Forest
Highland Mixed School - Skettis
Sporefish School - Zangarmarsh

----------------------------------------

Old Man Barlowned

Very simple-

There is a daily fishing quest in Terrokar. Each day the fishing quest is randomly chooses one of five fishing quests for you to do. Keep doing this quest every day and eventually you will get all 5.

-----------------------------------------

The Lurker Above

Fish up the Lurker Below in Serpentshrine Cavern

- This is definitely soloable.
- I followed this guide:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2GPZwpkwPg

Credit to TheZemalf (YouTube)

----------------------------------------

Catch 1000 Fish

- Pretty straight forward.
- With the time you'll spend fishing for coins, the rat and The one that didn't get away, you will MORE than hit this. (It took me about 7500 fish to finish the achievement panel for fishing)
- Don't go out of your way to accomplish this, just let it happen on it's own while doing other achievements.

-----------------------------------------

The Old Gnome in the Sea

- Another fishing achievement which will come automatically by doing other achievements.

-----------------------------------------

Fish Don't Leave Footprints

Acquire the Fish Tracking ability

- By fishing out of "wreckage" nodes, you will often get boxes of level relevant profession loot. (Light Leather, Bolts of Mageweave, etc.)
- In these boxes there is a small chance to get the book which teaches you this ability.
- Run along the western coast of Stranglethorn Vale and you should at least find one or two wreckage nodes. Fish these until you get crates.
- Wreckage nodes are easy to spot, because they're not your normal, swirling water nodes. They actually have boxes and pieces of lumber floating in them.

--------------------------------------

And that's how I got to Salty :)

I hope this has been helpful in answering some of those ambiguous questions one runs into after forum crawling for the easiest way to finish an achievement.

On a side note-

I did Old Ironjaw and Old Crafty as well.

- Old Craft was very easy. Simply get the Baby Crocolisk quest and go to Orgrimmar. When the loot box comes up, ignore it and keep fishing. After a dozen or so casts, you'll get Old Crafty.

- Old Ironjaw was the hardest fishing achievement I've done, to date. I play Horde, so I had to hide out in the Forlorn Cavern for 4000 casts. I got attacked and camped at least a dozen times. If you are Horde and you are going for Old Ironjaw, I'll give you these pointers:

Do not wear any items with Durability. Rings and Trinkets and Necklaces are okay, but don't destroy your armor by getting killed a bunch of times.

First, go to the back of the Forlorn Cavern. If you get attacked, move to the Lava in the middle of Ironforge (just behind the northernmost cog on the bridge in the exact middle of IF). You'll get attacked in both places, but at least you can escape some camping.

Do NOT fight back. This will only aggravate the Alliance more, and they'll end up camping your body. You are much less fun to antagonize if all you do is stand still and die. Plus, if you attack any NPCs, there will be a yellow message broadcast to all of Ironforge alerting them to your presence, so don't rock the boat.

It helps to fish during off hours (early morning and midday).

Make SURE you watch your screen and don't habituate yourself to casting over and over. Old Ironjaw is BoP, so you MUST accept him once the window pops up, and you don't want to have to do another 5000 casts because you were fishing too fast.

Yesterday I found myself near Elwynn Forest, so I thought it would be a good time to pick up the Stormwind half of the Fishing Diplomat achievement.

I've found that ever since they changed the entry guards to be lvl 75 rather than 65, sneaking in through the front door is a no-no; even with +stealth trinkets working overtime, they see right through it. My Vanish only has about a 50% chance of getting them off my back. Instead I've discovered that the best way to get into Stormwind is to come the back way through the new harbor around back. You can swim there from the Westfall/Elwynn border, and the guards are all lvl 65. Keep in mind that fishing from Stormwind Harbor does NOT count toward your Fishing Diplomat achievement; you have to apparently fish from inside the city walls for the achievement to take.

I was able to stealth to the canals without much problem and grab my single catch. Since I was already in SW and the Deeprun Tram was not that far from me, I figured I'd take my chances at Old Ironjaw.

Stealthing to the tram was not a problem; I think there was a single guard I had to avoid on the way. Once I got into the tram I opted to run the rails rather than take the tram, as I was still flagged and I didn't want to draw unnecessary attention to myself.

I came out at Ironforge in Tinkertown, which is very close to the Forelorn Cavern. This was indeed much better than coming through the front door! This way I'd have to deal with at most 5 lvl 75 guards rather than the score or so that I'd have to deal with from the front entry. However 5 guards was about 5 more than I wanted to deal with!

I mounted up and started to make a mad dash toward the cavern. Sure enough, the first pair of guards aggroed me. I then rode straight into the middle of the second pair, and picked up their aggro as well. I was almost to the cavern when they dismounted me, so I dropped a Vanish and prayed. I got the message "Leaving Combat" and breathed a sigh of relief.

About one second later I encountered the fifth guard, whom I had not counted on. This guard pats the wall directly across from the cavern entrance. If I'd stuck to the south wall there's a very good chance I could have avoided him. I knew I was going to die but I figured I'd at least do it in a good position. So I ran for the water and managed to swim about halfway across the pool before I got killed.

After that, it was easy. I did the necessary corpse-run, edged myself against the south wall, did a /sleep command to bring a low profile, and started fishing.

At first I had the place entirely to myself. After a couple of minutes a Human Paladin showed up and I started to get worried; I really didn't want to fight anybody, I just wanted a nice pacifist fishing trip. After a few seconds he waved at me and proceeded to fish by my side. Awesome.

Every couple of minutes another Alliance character would ride by the pool. Most didn't even see me, but some would stop and look at me for a few seconds and then ride on. I only had one character try to pick on me, a Draenei Shaman. My solution to this was to Vanish and then move to another spot. He tried to locate me again but with no luck, and eventually went away. I then unstealthed and proceeded to start fishing again, and the two people who'd showed up there to fish cheered as I reappeared. What a great thing: cameradery between the factions, and all because of fishing!

Finally (after about 150-200 throws) I got my prize - Old Ironjaw. The two other fishermen cheered me again, I took a bow, and I hearthed the heck out of there.

In a nutshell, it's very possible and not that hard, as long as you come in through the back door at Stormwind and take the Deeprun Tram. Most people will ignore you (at least they did me) as long as you stick to fishing and don't try to fight anybody. If you are attacked it may even be best to take the blows and not fight back so that when you return the people who witnessed the battle know that you're not interested in fighting, just fishing.

# Topic Fishing- old crafty, old ironjaw

Since a lot of people will be getting these obscure fish due to the added achievements, I was thinking it would be cool if they were changed to be one handed instead of specifically offhand items. In that same line of thinking it would be cool if they had some kind of a 2 set bonus proc like, "Chance on hit- target is afflicted with walleye vision."

Walleye vision would place a debuff on the target that would make all other NPCs and players look like frogs or maybe change that players view to be distorted like its namesake.

Post some more cool procs these fish could do.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you guys think this is cool post your ideas. Thanks!

Many kudos for this awesome site.

I wonder if anyone caught Old Ironjaw as a Horde character? Has anyone suggestions on how to keep a low profile in IF while fishing in peace?

I hope you like this story on the origins of Old Ironjaw, and Slavaa's mad anglin' skills

Well, after finding, anglin' and catching Old Ironjaw, I downed a few celeberatory beersh *hic*, but you may be wondering: how did I come to get in there, well, it's a story that needs to be told, so tell I shall.

There I was, standing in the orcish city of Orgrimmar one day, thinking “Well, I’ve helped Old man Barlo, the Shattered Sun Offensive, The Scyers, and the Frostwolves today, killed all sorts of monsters and humans alike, what else is there to do?”so I found myself walking, blinking and teleporting toward the tavern, where there are always adventures to be found.

Fully expecting to hear of monsters raising the countryside, demons killing the soldiers, and Alliance plans of attack, I entered the Tavern.

I, Slavaa of the Shattered Sun, am very welcome anywhere I go, despite the fact I am living impaired, so I walk up to the barkeep and ask “Are there any new tales being told, and may I have pint to whet my rotting whistle?” “Of course there are Slavaa, but first, and how will you be paying today?” Fulling knowing what these people want I respond “In large amounts, Beer Is On The House!” Which met a resounding cheer from the rest of the bar. “So, of those tales of which you spoke, which is the most heroic and dangerous?” The bartender then spoke to me, of a tale, of a journey, of a legend unlike any of which I had previously heard, this was not one of sword, shield or spell, not primarily anyway, it was of a fish. A fish they call “Old Ironjaw”.

“Old Ironjaw was born in Stillwater lake in Tirisfal Glades on the continent of Lordaeron, and there he lived for many decades. Until one day, when the Plague struck. A Dwarf, of Blump family descent, who was staying in the area decided to catch one of his final fish, as even in the air he could feel the horrors of the Plague seeking him, he caught one fish. The fish’s jaw was huge and muscular, as tough as iron, and when this dwarf saw that fish, which he named Ironjaw, it gave him the tenacity to carry on.

Through Trisifal he ran, through Silverpine and through Hillsbrad, through Arathi and the Wetlands, and through Loch Modan, and after the days he spent running, spanning two continents and many territories, he finally arrived at Ironforge in Dun Morogh, he said “I must sho’ this fish ta’ me family in te’ Forlorn Caverns, they’ll be so proud’a me. It’ll be our pride for generations ta’ come.”

The Blump family was elated to see this fish, it’s massive jaw and power would one day become a family crest. “An’ you lil’ Gubba, I want ye ta’ ‘ave me fishing pole, with which I caught dis’ mighty fish. I hope it gives ye’ good luck.”

Now of course this fish was an amazing sight, and even though the only time it hit water since it’s catch was the precipitation of the wedlands it was still breathing, the family decided to release it into the pool across from their house, they carved a notch in the Blump Family Fishing Pole for each time it was caught and released again by them, after a rather long time of fishing (their hobby is fishing) only three times was he caught again.

The family no long remains in Ironforge, but their fish does. And he has taken quite a liking to the area.”
“Wow” I respond, intrigued. The bartender went on to say that no one allied with orcs had ever laid eyes upon this fish, and from the military precision and defenses of Ironforge makes it seem as if none ever will.

I am not the type to back down from a challenge, doctor says “Slavaa, I would advise against you seeing your girlfriend again, she ... she has the Undead Plague.” I respond “That sounds like a challenge!” and rush in, but that’s another story for another time. This challenge was unlike any I had ever faced, if I attracted too much attention the army could be called in, and then that would be the end of me. Nonetheless, I back down from no challenge. Ever. Quickly pulling out my map, I deduce the quickest path would be from the Kargath going North, and so I set out.

With a few words of power, a colossal quantity of concentration and a *pop* I arrive in the Undercity and ride my undead horse the taxi wyvern service with my favourite book: “The Bass and You” reading up the best fish catching stratagems.

A few chapters later I find myself in a barren wasteland, which is why I brought my map.

My horse needs no food or rest, it being undead like myself, and therefore I make record time to fifty foot gates of this ultra fortified city. Ironforge.

The first bit goes rather easily, all the busy bodies go about trading and banking. They don’t even notice me under my heavy robe. I even make my way past a few of the drunker guards. Unfortunatly they sobered up by the time I passed the Mystic Ward, and being extremely well trained, they saw through my clever disguise. This when badly from here, luckily none of the experienced adventurers make their way down here, so the two guards were quickly disposed of and hid under a nearby fruit stand (that gnome’s in for a surprise).

Using my stealth skill learned from my thieving friend Croaker, I made my way to the Forlorn Cavern, I could nearly smell the massively jawed aquatic creature, he is in for a wake up call.

Much to my dismay, the hydrated area of the cavern is very near to the urban area, all those angry residents would tear me limb from limb. In blind hope I search my pack for something that would help in this situation, and I just happen to find 2 potions of water walking I received from Old man Barlo after I helped him catch the fish that was stealing his bait.

17 minutes later, my fishing rod is bending, the line is stretching (I recently replaced it with a spun Truesilver line) and all I’ve pulled up have been Mudsnappers and Smallfish. 19 minutes, still no Ironjaw, and I can feel my feet slipping through the water as the last potion wears off. My feet have almost fallen through, I only have time to catch one last fish. I can only hope. One foot’s fallen through, but this fish is fighting long and hard. If I fall in the water all hope is lost, but this fish is almost here. I pull it up just as I fall under, I see it. But it’s just an inch too far away, conjuring my arcane powers I hit it with a Slow, it’s not going anywhere.

But just as I believe it shall be mine, the splashing alerts the guards. It’s no use having a prized fish if it must be buried with me. I must cast like I have never cast before. Thinking quickly I begin to cast a teleport spell to the Undercity, but I combine it with my knowledge of area of effect spells... 5... 4... 3... 2... *pop*

*Sploosh* And with a square decaliter of water and a few flopping fish I successfully teleport to the Undercity, among the fish: Old Ironjaw. This legend of anglin’ history is now mine. Only now do I remember, I wanted to go to Orgrimmar...

I told you I'd make a Lore/Roleplaying Story of my Old Ironjaw catch

Tell me if you like it/think it's just a wall of text
