Nothing to show for the effort yet... sigh...</p> <p>I sure wish Blizz had updated this achieve to work in a location with fish that were usable in Cata content. He's got everything except the Rare Fish and the Fishing Contest win (which I'm saving for the last achievement).</p> <p>The other day I made a new bank alt (with fishing and cooking), and sent him down to the pond next to the Blacksmith Shop in Goldshire and threw a line in the water.</p> <p>On the second (!!!!!) cast, I caught a rare fish. :(</p> <p>You can't believe how depressed that made me. (MG-US is one of the original four servers, big as hell.) And here's the kicker - I've competed four times, and I basically won three times!</p> <p>I won two weeks ago (almost) by getting to 38 fish with 16 trash fish. (16 is extremely unlucky) I won one week ago straight up, and then this week I hit 40 fish and didn't turn in. I hit 44 fish before I got the yell that someone had won. I didn't turn in because I really don't care about the trinket and because I just want the Dezian Queenfish. Which I didn't get, of course.</p> <p>I won't bore anyone with my location - That sort of stuff doesn't mean anything as more people moving to a location makes it bad. I will tell you my theory about server populations. As a server becomes more populous and more people compete in the STVFE, the virtue having a large number of pools (from henceforth let's call that a group of pools) in a small area increases.</p> <p>Now, obviously having a large number of pools in a small location is ALWAYS a virtue, but bear me out: A group of pools, say 5-7 within 10 seconds of 310% flight away from each other, even when you've got a couple of people fishing at them, is, indeed, going to deplete fairly quickly. But during a heavy STVFE, those pools are going to respawn even faster!</p> <p>How can you leverage this? Don't move around a lot. The virtue of moving between groups of pools decreases as you get more and more people on the server because you have less time to wait for a respawn.</p> <p>Also, on a heavy STVFE, I'd advise you to find an extreme area. What do I mean? Well, you can look at the locations you fish as continuous strips of land, ones that terminate at natural locations, like Booty Bay to Hardwrench, Wild Shore to Crystal Vein, Zul'Kunda to the Vortex. What I advise is you pick a spot near the ENDS of those strips.</p> <p>"But, that means you only have one direction to search for more pools!" Yes, that's true. And that's a real disadvantage. However there is an upside: Everybody else has only one direction to go as well, so as a result most of those people who start out near you are going to do what's rational, and work their way toward the middles of those strips of land. This is only natural - They're forced to move toward the middle whenever they're at one of the two ends, and eventually if you assume they take a random walk from there, half of them will work their way toward the middle while the other half will immediately jam up against the end, only to be forced to head back toward the center. The point is if you assume the competitors take a random walk, the ends will gradually deplete.</p> <p>My point is during a heavy STVFE the disadvantage of having only one place to search for pools is mitigated by the high respawn rate, and is eventually superseded by the advantage of having people inexorably abandon your pool group, despite the excellent respawn rate. I wonder if I'm wasting my lures and lager? (Although, keeping that drinking buff up is a challenge in itself, with only a 3 min duration. It's a good thing I'm a Dwarf, because a lightweight Gnome would never be able to chug this much beer!)</p> <p>And what should I do with all these Herrings? I immediately landed at the next pool (NW of the Arena) and started working my way north from there. To my great surprise, I stumbled across a spot with at least 6 pools up within a very tight space. It was right on the border between Northern STV and the Cape, where the water flows into the maelstrom. There was only one other player there, a priest, who immediately offered me 500g if I would help him win. I turned him down. I managed to get at least 5 pools (2 of which spawned while I was there) before I ran out of pools. I then headed north past Grom'gol, where I found 2 pools before I ran into other players, so I headed back south to the previous location. I Finally Got the Fishing Bug, and Jumped and Lept through the Anglers Acheeves, Got my Mr. Pinchy within a Week, and the rest in good time, But..The Last 2 left Were Winning a Fishing Derby and "The One That Didn't get Away". I could Not believe It..My Very First Derby I entered..Wouldn't ya know.. I got the Black Tip Shark and raced back to Dalaran For the Win and got my Boots. I know Lucky..and highly Rare, I was elated. Now the Final Beast. I tried for the Dark Herring but just wasn't loving it, so after about 800 casts I switched to the 15 LB Mud Snapper in Crystal Lake. I got about 1200 Casts Total and got my Bloated Smallfish but not the one that got away. I read ELs Anglin' and StoneBull Lake was what everyone was talking about. So at 186 casts total.. 15 LB Mud Snapper!!!! Given this was Over a Months time only fishing there for 10 mins at a time. But 20 casts in today there it was.. SALTY !!!!!!. Here's how the numbers looked at StoneBull Lake. (on the lil bump rock off the Coast with 680 Fishing Skill and Magical crawdad out for help :)</p> <p>Brilliant Smallfish = 107<br /> Mud Snapper= 74<br /> Minor Mana Potion = 2<br /> 12 Lb Mud Snapper =2<br /> 15 LB Mud Snapper = 1 </p>
