Been lurking here for a while but i thought i'd share my thoughts on the Kalu'ak Derby.
Okay so after having no luck with the Fishing Lottery- I mean Derby so far (I haven't caught a single shark and fished the full hour in every contest so far^^) I've been looking at a few ways one COULD increase their chances of winning.

A few factors that can affect chances of winning:
How close are the pools you're fishing?
How many other people are fishing those pools?

These are the first two which spring to mind. But how about these:
How far apart are everyone else's fishing pools?
How MANY FISH are in their pools? ; )

These last two are of interest to us because we CAN control them.
How? Well although it involves spending a good few hours beforehand for relatively small gain, some form of "preparation" is possible. I've noted that people tend to stop fishing pools as much a couple of hours before the contest starts. Starting last week i have begun "forcing" pools into a close group. In Grizzly Hills I succeeded (after a good half hour) Of emptying most of the southern Imperial Manta Ray pools and filling most of the eastern ray schools.

However, this week i'm going to try something else: fishing as many pools as i can to reduce the number of fish in each pool (apart from mine on the east coast : P) Effectively all one does is fish 2-3 catches out of each pool so that only 1 or 2 fish remain in each pool. The theory being that competitors will take longer travelling between useless pools while I catch the shark and win : D Obviously it's gonna take some time to go around every pool in Northrend, and sure some lucky randomer with a fishing skill of 23 may still get it on his first catch, but it has to help SOMEHOW!

I'm not sure if some will view this as cheating, but I for one think this is perfectly acceptable : )

What do you guys think? Too much effort for too little gain?

Also still wearing max fishing gear out of paranoia incase the skill does have some affect on your chances. :P any proof of that yet?

Anyways thanks for reading, sorry if post is a bit lengthly. Will let you know if i end up with some nice boots or a broken computer and a sore fist!

It seems that since the 3.0.8 patch the catch rate of Pygmy Suckerfish was greatly increased.

I don't have the raw data b/c i stopped using fishing buddy, but when i am farming Nettlefish at River's heart i catch 1 about every other catch.

They once went for 90g per stack and now they're going for about 3g per stack.

Has anyone else noticed the same?

I am not making the most on Mussleback Sculpin and Nettlefish - do you guys think they will ever introduce new fish into WoTK?

I am getting a little bored with the current selection.

It appears that Blizz have seriously nerfed the droprate since yesterday (presumably in the maintenance) I've only fished a small sample so far, and only Glassfin Minnow, but it now seems to be about 9%, as opposed to about 90-95% droprate I was seeing as last as last night.
Phew....no more having to dump them for bag space after filling the guildbank and flooding the AH with them :D

I copy my char with 5 Dalaran Cooking Award for Fish Feast, after i buy recipe i see need only 1 Northern Spices not 4. 1st i go to Grizzly Hills for Glacial Salmon in 1st school all time catch Pygmy Suckerfish too, 2nd go to Borean Tundra for Musselback Sculpin, and final go to Sholazar Basin for Nettlefish. After 20/20/20 fish, 7 Crystallized Water, and 2 crate, 45! Pygmy Suckerfish. 45/69 = 65% catch.

I noticed you don't have any information on the Sholazar Coast, and thought I'd contribute some. I fished from 7:40 to 8:14 PM on 12/27/08 in open water at coords 16, 67 on the coast. With 558 skill, I'm pretty sure I didn't lose any. I got a lot of getaways with no lure (483 skill.) As for the catch, with 100 casts:

66 Barrelhead Goby
30 Nettlefish
6 Pygmy Suckerfish (yes, on the coast)
2 Reinforced Crate
2 Crystalized Water

This might be the same as inland fishing, I'm not sure. I would have emailed this straight to El, but I couldn't find contact information. I love the site, please keep it up :D

Accordingly to what I've read here (love El's Anglin!) Suckerfish have about a 10% drop rate. Despite about 500 casts in inland waters throughout Northrend I've gotten about 10 Suckerfish which seems awfully low. Maybe it's just my bad luck?
