A new minor "glyph of blurred speed" gives rogues water walking while sprint is active. With various items, glyphs, and talents, you can get a rogue with a 1 minute sprint cooldown, 18 second sprint, and 3 minute Preparation cooldown, so my rogue could run 36 seconds at 170% speed with water walking. Last week I had 37 fish before I got ganked about 4 times by the same group of 5 Alliance. Had that not happened there's no doubt in my mind I would've won, as it took the winner a good 10 mins after that to be announced. THIS week there were no ally at all, but a huge ammount of horde. Someone said they had 37 fish in general chat and I freaked out, but 2 pools spawned right next to me. I hearthed, turned it in, and won. I chose the trinket then, thinking it would help me move around a bit faster for future competitions. After a few close calls, I won again yesterday, and got the Arcanite Fishing Pole. I think I can retire now. At least once I finally get the Fishing Line. No luck there yet. The very first time I did the contest, I caught 2 rares in about 5 minutes. I got the Lucky Fishing Hat *and* the Fishing Boots! I didn't realize how unusual that was at the time. Since then I haven't seen a single rare fish, so no fishing line yet, but still hoping. Now I have the Blue Fishing hat from the Fishing dailies, the stylish overalls, the fingerless gloves, Nat's Extreme Angler Pole, the fishing boots, the Arcanite Pole, the Trinket, and the Gone Fishin' Loot Card Fishing Chair. I think the best part is, I used to hate fishing in the game, until I got up to around 300, and was able to fish in Outland for raid food. Suddenly, I started enjoying it, even before the fishing dailies, which I still try to do every day. No bucket fish, no 2 Ring, no Mr. Pinchy yet, but I still try. I think it's true that the slow weekends are a bit better to try winning, especially the holidays, like the upcoming 4th of July. :) Thanks to the Love Child and everyone here for tips and stories about a secondary profession I never thought would turn out to be so much fun. If it hadn't been for all of the non-Tastyfish catches yesterday, I'd have had the Hook. There seem to be fewer people in the Extravaganza lately on Earthen Ring, perhaps due to Summer vacations starting. Usually there is a group of unenlightened "contestants" who run around fishing in a pack, apparently without realizing that staying away from other contestants is the key to victory. I didn't see them yesterday, and only had one other player even cast into a school I was fishing. It was kind of eerie, but I'll take that over a crowd any day. Average win on Argent Dawn has gone from 25 minutes a year ago, to 20 minutes since TBC. Luck is what it comes down to for me, alas. I've also won once on Trinda on Thorium Brotherhood (Horde Normal-RP), back in 2006. As I am totally into novelty items, I decided to opt for the Hook rather than the rod (both times). Some might say it was foolhardy, but it was definitely worth it. To this day I use it regularly and it is wicked. I have gone the way of the Bloodsail, so it is doubtful that I will ever win again due to Bruiser interference. However, the rare extravaganza fish are still on my radar (2 and a half years and STILL no rare fish). It IS 'possible' to win still, just unlikely. The NPC's for the fishing tourney (as well as Landro Longshot) are all still quite friendly to Bloodsails. Edit to add: I still make a fair bit of money from the tastyfish turnins as a Bloodsail. Tips from this website contributed to my victory. Thanks El! Without giving away my exact spot, I will say that I did not spend much time traveling up and down the coast. During both of the tournaments I won, I noticed an abnormal number of people choosing not to fish in the pools I was fishing. This week, I finished in 21 minutes, and only shared a pool once. Immediately preceding my first win, I summoned a mechanical greench. Maybe people felt they had to respect the greench and give me some room. Subsequent attempts (with admittedly less cool pets, such as the hounds from SM or mechanical yetis) did not yield the same respect. For my first win, I was using a strong fishing pole with no lure and none of the extraganza gear. After all, STV is not that difficult to fish. Since then, I have used the FC-5000, not wanting people to see me with the Arcanite Pole and follow me around. I do recommend an Azure Silk Belt. I thought I would need swiftness potions, water walking potions, and/or swim speed potions, but I did not use any in either of my wins. Still, they might be nice to have on hand... couldn't hurt. I have spent a lot of time fishing, and have competed in the extravaganza an awful lot, but I don't think skill has much to do with it, past a certain point. It comes down to whether other anglers are fishing your pools. If they are, all you can do is wait until next week. As with all things fishing, patience is key.
