I caught all three rares in the same tournament, after I'd won it for the second time and got the trinket. I figured why not try since there was so much time left, so I fished away and got all three. I bought a lottery ticket the same day...but didn't win.

To date I have caught 3 lines, 4 boots, and 6 hats and have been doing them 2-3 times a month since August or so of last year. In one tournament I made 3 rare fish catches (2 boots and 1 hat) and that day and I only fished for about an hour, other times I'd fish for all 2 hours and get none, when I fish longer my goal is getting more of the lines for all my poles as I have the weather beaten hat and boots of the bay. Best thing to do is just keep fishing, the RNG on catching them is too hard to even say if you do fish for the full 2 hours you'll catch anything or if you'll catch a whole bunch. I don't think any of the three things have a better chance of dropping or drop in a certain order for everyone but wish I had caught less hats and boots and more lines.

Sadly you're absolutely right. Ah well. I tested after I lost today (just in case Tastyfish pools worked differently) but it disappeared after 5 casts even without me looting any fish.

With pools, once the loot window appears, that loot is removed from the pool, even if you don't take the loot. You can test this by fishing a pool without ever taking any loot: Eventually the pool will disappear, emptied.

For the STV fishing contest, I get a few stranglekelps and firefins and oily blackmouths, etc.

Does it make sense to turn off auto-loot, and then only loot if it's a tastyfish?

Disadvantage: Takes a bit longer to loot each tastyfish.
Advantage: Make each pool last longer, reducing travel time.

Honestly, if griefing other players was the only way for you to "win" the contest, I feel sorry for you.

Anyone can "win" something by disadvantaging all their competition.

I hope you feel proud of yourself, and sleep well at night knowing that you went into the competition fair and square, and proved yourself a luckier angler than everyone else there that day.

Oh, yeah, /sarcasm off now.

Okay, so I had been trying the STV Extravaganza contest for a few weeks until my friend came up with the brilliant idea of bringing a few people with Mammoth mount to help me out.

I started out on the south-western coast and I had one of my friends run along the eastern coast, and 2 along the western coast to simply take their Mammoth mounts and stand in the pool and block the fishing bopper for the other players so they can't click it (and of course attempt ganks if the player is opposing faction - but most importantly block casts with Mammoth mount).

I won the contest in 14-15 minutes and people were complaining in the chat.

Cheating? No one told me about the rules! ;)

Good luck! Go win the conest now :D

I had my 8th win yesterday, though only 4 are from the awful infested post-3.0 versions of the contest. That cut my win percentage down by a lot :(

You're pretty much spot on with the rules of thumb I have adopted:

Stay away from people. A person can decent. People SUCK.

Never cross-fish. All it takes it one person to start a "war" and it escalates FAST.

Use anything that gives a mobility edge.

I have some additional pointers:

With the configuration of many STV pools, it is usually best to be out on the water facing perpendicular at the land directly opposite the pool. This way many casts that are outside the pool will instead give "no water/shallow" errors which is much faster than the full cast animation. Close range casting tends to be more accurate as well. Practice fishing before the contest (uses the same spawns) and you can get a very good feel for the sweet spots. Some pools are >90% land on actual casts this way.

Never attempt to fish in the "broken" pools, and if you aren't SURE your lure is inside a pool, it is always better to recast. Again, experience will make the latter very easy.

WW potions are cheap and free if you do the daily often. I have a couple hundred in my banker guild vault...

I believe mithril spurs still work (we never did get our riding crop replacement blizzard) if you are not a paladin/dk/BM hunter. Runspeed boosting won't hurt either, spurs on arathi boots is a good combo.

If you have a goldpile, consider hiring a paladin to follow you around for crusader and fake-fish in your pools or nearby pools you want to go to next. Make sure he keeps his mouth shut though, fill it with gold :) Give him potions too, or hire a DK too for even more pool coverage. You could even have them scout both directions for you as long as they come back quick...gold is easy! :)

Luck helps too, I had a couple times of being at 35+ tastyfish along with 10+ alchemy fish. I think my "worst" was at 39 tastyfish, hitting a pool that gave me 4 alchemy fish and losing. If not then the time I was at 38 and had FOURTEEN alchemy fish when the winner was announced.

I'm mentally blocking out all the times I was doing well and got hit by collateral damage from the weekly Fisher Griefing War™

BTW the derby is almost all luck, you can win on a single cast. Don't work too hard, all you are doing is buying slightly more lottery tickets than the next guy. You don't even need a pool to win!

The STV contest is more like 90% strat/skill/diplomacy (depends on server) 10% luck.

so today was my first win. it's very exciting to finally be able to turn into an ugly fish. anyways, i contribute most of my win to luck. i woke up from a nap right before the contest started and just decided to give it a try even though i didn't think i'd get there in time. i also had no trouble with griefers on either faction, though i did spot a well-known alliance griefer before the contest while i was in Booty Bay. but a good portion of my win was thanks to good strategy. most of that strategy can be found on this page. i'm here to reiterate some of that knowledge and hopefully get you guys a step closer to that Salty title

1. Find Fish
it's common sense but i had "find fish" on, so i could see the pools of tastyfish on my minimap. if you don't have it already, you can find more info on that here

2. Get There Early
got there early enough to set my hearth to Booty Bay and waited out on the coast for the contest to begin. depending on where your hearth is, about 1:40-1:45 server time is a good time to head down there

3. Water Walking
if you're not a shaman, collect them from fishing dailies or get an alchemist to create them for you. water walking's freedom is essential to helping you save much needed time when traveling from one pool to another. and for you priests, don't rely on levitate either. you'll need water walking specifically so you can mount up on the water

4. Stay Away From the Crowd: Where to Start
i read two very important pieces of info on this page that definitely gave me my edge. first i read that there was no real place to start fishing, though the person who wrote the guide suggested starting in the center of the western coast. so i did that and i didn't run into people for a good ten minutes. it makes sense, most people would start at one edge of the coast and work their way towards the other. and when they do that, they're busy dealing with the crowd taking their tastyfish

5. Stay Away From the Crowd: Do the Opposite
the other important piece of info i read was "You must learn to adapt to what other anglers are doing, and normally do the opposite." this tip may have been the one that gave me my win. in the past, i would fish anywhere. if three people were trying to grab fish from a pool, i'd jump in. i mean, any piece of fish is worth fishing for, right? wrong. if you're spending your entire time competing for pools of fish, then you're wasting your time. the more people fishing out of one pool drains that pool faster and forces you to travel more often than you should. stay away from the crowd. when i saw a group of people coming at me from one direction, i'd try to stay ahead of them, or i would run towards them and look for pools of respawned fish

6. Research Beforehand! Know What You Want
i didn't have trouble with this but i thought i'd share the tip anyways. once you've gotten your fish and you're ready to turn it in, choose your reward and complete the quest as soon as possible. i've read stories about people trying to figure out which prize they want as another person snuck up behind them and took first prize for themselves. it's common sense but definitely something to keep in mind

well, i slept through yesterday's Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, so i'll give it a try next week. if i win, then that means i'm doing something right and i'll be back here to start a thread on it. see you guys, and happy fishing!

I had a discussion with a former player that tried this once. He thought for sure the GMs couldn't remove the title and could only take away the fishing pole. Two days after the win they rolled back his character to the state in which it transferred. I laughed my butt off! Yeah he quit shortly after that incident.

Another way to cheat (I think it's been mentioned here) is to fish up 40 tastyfish, then immediately start a paid transfer to a server where the server time is hours earlier. If your transfer happens in time, you'll be on your new realm before the contest starts, with 40 fish.

this sounds odd to me, did you at least try, or is is just hypthetical?...you might be able to do that eventually in US, but not in EU, every single server have the same server time, en, es, russian, all..

If you have a complaint or issue with a Blizzard GM, you must take the problem to Blizzard, not here. I have no way judge what are fairly serious allegations, and there's no way for GMs to defend themselves here. For the US, you can find contacts here.
