Someone told me to fish-out all the tastyfish pools, after the tournament, and some were bound to spawn wreckage... they were correct! My first wreckage yielded my weather beaten journal.

And to make things even better, I figured I'd go find Mr. Pinchy while I was having luck.... got him on my 2nd cast at the lake next to Shat! yay for me!

Wreckage pools can be hard to find since the Shattering. It's possible that there is a quirk with the way pools are generated after a realm (server) restart: Wreckage pools seem especially unlikely to spawn until other pools are fished. Might be helpful to read about Pool Spawning.

Some confusing update today. I started a druid and my gf started a hunter, as we are adventuering toghether and it is her first char i wanted to show her about most stuff. One of them was about fishing and Weather-Beaten Journal.

Now it was all ok, i found my journal and send it to my druid and he learned it, and same to my gf. But i had lots of other journals over, i thought i'll send it to my bank char, well he is lvl 1 and can't learn fishing, and i refuse to lvl him.

So i had this other char called Leatherboy, lvl 1 Palladin. I set out and started to level him up to 5, got fishing and sent all the trunks to him. Now every trunk i open shows up empty, but doesn't dissapere which leads me to think there's a journal in them. But now every other character i have, allready has "find fish" so this is the last guy.

I'm thinking maybe it's the skill level, he has 9 in skill so far. I'm thinking i will skill him up some more and see if he sees it.

Just to add my two coppers, I started a new character and I was fishing in oily blackmouth pools down the coast from Ratchet in hopes of pulling in some kind of trunk and getting the journal. I pulled in several tightly sealed trunks while fishing those pools and I got my journal in the second trunk. The journal may be more scarce in such trunks, but with Blizzard’s evil random loot generator it’s difficult to tell.

By the way, I would recommend that area as an option for young characters hoping to make a few coins. I found lots of oily blackmouth pools on the coast starting at Ratchet and heading toward Thousand Needles. There were few mobs around. The pirates near Ratchet are about level 14 and the critters in the water are about level 18. My dwarf was about level 25, so they didn’t bother him. Oily blackmouth sell for about 1 gold per five on my server, so the money was decent as there were lots of pools.

The fishing guide for making money suggests fishing up deviate fish in the various Barrens Oasis. As I could sell them for a gold per fish, even uncooked, that may still be the better suggestion. Even just standing and fishing in one spot after the pools are used up, which doesn’t take long at all, I pulled up a fair amount of deviate fish. But as I never pulled up any kind of trunk from those pools, I don’t know if the journal can be fished from them. So for those trying to get the journal, oily blackmouth pools are not bad for both journal fishing and for making a few coins on the side.

I've added a reference on the Fish Finder. It is known that these trunks do sometimes contain a journal. I caught 30 Tightly Sealed Trunk during testing, and never saw a journal. So I'm inclined to conclude journals are less common in Tightly Sealed Trunks than other trunks and crates.

Greetings all. I found this site by looking for more info on the fishing journal which enables the Fish Finder ability. I was, of course, looking to see if I could find another and sell it. That being said, I have perused the postings and think I know what to look for, so, thanks for that.
I do have something to add: I found my Journal while fishing in Darkshore (Auberdine, right next to Bubba Gump in Floating Debris) within the 1st couple casts after getting the fishing ability.
That would mean that it should have been a Tightly Sealed Trunk.
So, I think you can add the Tightly Sealed Trunk to 'Journals can be found in Curious Crate, Heavy Supply Crate, Iron Bound Trunk, Mithril Bound Trunk and Watertight Trunk.'
Anyway, finding the journal has really made fishing quite fun and interesting.
Nice site, very useful. I just made Lvl 225 for fishing, and thanks to your site, I know how to progress in level. Thanks.

I don't fish Mirkfallon Lake near as much as I used to (my alts are slowly getting past that stage :) ) but I have been there a few times in the last week.

Each time, I seem to get about the same ratio of Sagefish Pools to Floating Wreckage pools: about 8 to 1.

I have gone long spells (perhaps 15+ pools) without seeing the Floating Wreckage and I have also seen three Wreckage Pools in a row in Mirkfallon.

I suspect you've just been a bit unlucky but I'll go back and fish it a bit more. I can always use more sagefish. :)

I never saw any pools of floating wreckage while I was fishing at Mirkfallon Lake, so I decided to head over to the Cragpool Lake area. All that was there were oil spills, so I decided to fish those for the heck of it. After the oil spills disappeared, a bunch of floating wreckage showed up and I caught probably 15 watertight trunks and one journal! Thanks for the help!

Are you fishing from pools? Wreckage pools in particular, but any Sagefish schools will give some trunks too. It might take a while to find a journal, but you should catch trunks quickly.

I have been fishing Mirkfallon Lake for the past week trying to get the journals for two of my characters. Of all the hours that I have put in, I haven't caught even one trunk! Is there a certain spot I should try, has the chance of catching a trunk decreased in Mirkfallon Lake, or what?! I'm desperate! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Haven't found any difference in 2.4 over 2.3 in looting the journal and have done so in both.

No dialog came up to warn the book was going to be bound when I accidentally looted the book from the trunk rather than just inspecting the contents of the trunk.

The only change I know is that a journal may be found in a Bag of Fishing Treasures (from the daily quests), which isn't what you're talking about.

The lack a dialogue for Bind on Pickup items should apply to the contest rare fish, and Mr. Pinchy, which is a huge benefit: If you're the kind of person that likes to auto-loot and recast without looking too hard at the screen, it was terribly easy to loose a rare catch.

I'm wondering if the 2.4 patch will have any effect on looting the Weatherbound Journal.

Here are some relevant patch notes:

- When looting Bind on Pickup items, the confirmation dialogue now lists the name of the item in the dialogue. You can now verify that you are picking up the correct bind on pickup item.
- Bind on Pickup items that only you can pick up (Heroic Badges for instance) will no longer bring up a confirmation dialogue.

Doesn't really address items that you cannot pick up but perhaps it does change that.

If you want to keep the book in the trunk, but check that the book is there (without risk of accidentally picking it up), you can send it to an alt. with the fishing ability but not the find fish skill.

Just make sure that the trunk is put into the last available slot in the backpack bags when the inventory is opened. When trying to open the trunk you will get the normal "inventory is full" message, but you will be able to see the book in the contents of the trunk. I have tested this.

I've found the the journal in Iron Mithril and Watertight trunks,, though it obviously does appear in others. I admit, I'm usually much too impatient (all the patience in the world for fishing though) and want to see what I have...

However if you don't know the fish finding skill and don't have a soulbound book in your current inventory (in the bank is fine) you can inspect the contents of the trunk without picking it up (eg shift right click if you have auto loot on) and see the book.

Also with the trunks being a lootable item, you can't auction the trunks. Upon pickup, the book becomes soulbound (I checked the last time). But keeping in the trunks, means you can put the [Weatherbound Journal] as a description up on the trade channel. Again, make sure you shift click to get the description rather than right click to pick up the item.

So you need to trade the trunks with other people which contain the book. Just make clear the book is in the trunk when you are selling.

Under 2.4 there isn't warning about binding either, so I lost yet another book to a mis-click.
