/trying not to sound like an elitist fisherman =)

I don’t think it’s a mater of being an elitist. I think you, like most of us, are seeking some individuality in a game that makes cookie cutters look diverse. It’s the same reason hunters like to tame “rare” pets. Or why some people choose to wear rarer reputation tabards. So having something most others don’t have or doing something most others don’t do is a way to have at least a bit of individuality.

Maybe that’s why I enjoy playing Cashara so much. She’s a female dwarf, rare in itself, with a level 70 pink tallstrider and a panda cub mini pet.

XD

Ah, hey I'm glad more people fish now. It makes sites like this more popular and therefore much better! ...and people don't think I'm such a nerd anymore for fishing. hehehe

This is something that actually kinda burns me about fishing in general, and the Sharpened Fish hook "drop" rate just makes it worse: being a skilled fisherman and one that continues to spend lots of time doing it isn't as profitable as it used to be!

For example, many of us remember when you could make a living on Stonescale Eels alone. For those of us of the more casual, just-playing-WoW-to-relax type of attitude, we could offer things the OMGHARDKOR people really needed, but would never be caught dead "wasting time" on themselves.

But over time, most especially after BC came out, Blizzard has made it easier and easier for anybody to reap most of the benefits of fishing pretty easily. Now, I *do* realize that they do this to a lot of things in the game (removing attunement to raid dungeons not the least of them) to cater to the more casual players (like me) because casual players make up the vast majority of their playerbase. I'm just a little peeved about when they make something TOO easy. It takes away from the novelty a bit, and you gotta admit fishing in WoW is definitely not as much of a novelty as it once was.

/trying not to sound like an elitist fisherman =)

I'm not really complaining, I just hate to see it when Blizzard basically kills a "niche" that a profession has, even if it's just a minor one.

While I certainly agree with you, in this particular case I don’t have a problem with it as far as my two engineers are concerned. Tin is a pain in the backside to farm, just about the hardest metal to find in Azeroth in my opinion. Which is why that stage of mining tends to be so frustrating for players. So I’m just as happy not to have to spend hours farming those bloody rocks anymore. I expect there are engineers who feel differently, but I’m finding the glut of sharpened fish hooks to be a blessing.

On the other hand, I’ll not forgive Blizzard for adding an easy to obtain frog pet to the game with the exact same graphic as the Lifelike Mechanical Toad. The engineering toad is a rare drop schematic that takes 265 skill to make. Back in the day that was a difficult level of engineering to reach and I had to wait months before I even saw the schematic on the AH. If I remember correctly I paid 80 for it, which was a small fortune back then. I was so excited when I got the schematic and managed to farm the living essence to make it. I had what almost nobody else had, a small toad hopping behind my paladin. And I made several for friends who liked mini pets. Then Blizzard added the Darkmoon Fair and anybody could buy the exact same looking toad for one gold. Blizzard could have changed the graphic, but instead they chose to ruin a perfectly fun engineering pet.

Sorry for the tangent, but even after all this time I still get frustrated about that.

I actually think the Sharpened Fish Hooks coming in the quantities that they do is a mixed blessing. For one thing, I'm glad that I don't have to be an engineer to help supply the up-and-coming Fishermen and women in my guild with an easy way to level up their fishing (I've donated easily over 80 of them to the guild bank). But on the other hand, this takes away something special from Engineers. I could see giving away 1-2 of the Sharpened Hooks like 25% of the time you turn in a daily fishing quest, but the fact you can easily walk away with 20 over only 3-4 days is just crazy.

I'm not really complaining, I just hate to see it when Blizzard basically kills a "niche" that a profession has, even if it's just a minor one.

Of course, they are not available from the vendors in large quantities, since they sell them in singletons mostly.

I simply meant to say that they are ALSO available, in large quantities, from engineers.

I simply read the guide to suggest that the source of this lure was from vendors, else I thought it might mention the engineer as a source, also. The guide doesn't, as far as I can tell, say that engineers can make this lure.

So, trying to be of some help, I mentioned it.

If someone thought I was being critical of the guide, then they are simply missing the purpose of my post.

The flood of Daily-Fishing-Quest-derived Sharpened Fish Hooks has made this less important in any case.

They are not available in large quantities from a vendor. They are available on the AH. The number of them has declined significantly since 2.4 came out because of the overabundance of Sharpened Hooks. I think the guide is quite accurate in saying that they are unavailable in large quantities.

I have a couple of engineers that can make them. But now that the daily fishing quest adds so many sharpened fish hooks to the world every day, I expect that the engineering lures won’t be quite in demand as they once were.

And I’m rather grateful for that, to be honest. The aquadynamic fish attractor required me to farm tin nodes. Tin is one of the most frustrating metes to have to hunt for. So I’d almost cringe every time I used a lure. Now I have fish hooks all but exploding from my bank box so I now find myself grateful when I get the chance to use one up.

I noticed a reference to this as not being available in large quantities.

I apologize if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but this lure can be made by engineers; I have many stacks of them in my bank from my friendly engineer.
