After doing the three dailies for the past couple of weeks, I should finally have this pole tomorrow. Unfortunately I get to repeat the whole process with my druid soon... at least the quests give experience.

I've one-shot many a lowbie ally trying to fish my pools during the Extravaganza with it. It's gotta be humiliating to be killed with a fishing pole, but this pole makes it possible.

The reason why the Kalu'ak Fishing pole has such a high dps is sort of a "she swallowed the spider to catch the fly" situation:

1. It's a reputation reward from a Northrend faction, therefore it's iLvl (item level) is determined by it's rarity (epic) and it's required reputation (exalted.) All epic faction rewards are iLvl 200.

2. It has a high iLvl therefore it has a certain average dps commensurate with an epic weapon of that iLvl.

Consider that there are a slew of epic two handed weapons in the game at iLvl 200 that all do 186.5 dps or thereabouts, with one notable exception down at the bottom of the list linked to above. (Dunno what's up with that one...)

Also note, I've excluded from the list any weapons with intellect on them - Those are caster items and all seem to have depressed dps numbers. This also happens with one-handed and rare weapons as well. The fishing pole is clearly being treated as a melee dps item.

I can't tell you how many kills I've made with my fishing pole... without realizing it. Luckily, being a hunter that's not as big a deal since the majority of the battle is ranged - changing only if I've grabbed the aggro. And... hitting with the fishing pole gives my pet an excellent opportunity to get the aggro back. :D

I always thought it was so pacifist gnome rogues could destroy fortress-mounted cannons in Wintergrasp (takes a minute or two, depending on Tenacity buff).

Should be whether or not you are a melee type...gear dependant still, I mean if you have no bonus %hit, then you'll still miss a lot in theory.

Basically, while holding a fishing pole you have a base melee swing chance based off of your fishing skill. So while swords, polearms, axes, fist weapons, etc cap out at 400, you can have 450 fishing (and thus 450 melee skill while wielding a fishing pole) if your fishing skill is that high.

So with a fishing pole that has 186.5 DPS, even though you can't use weapon specials (if you're a DK or warrior or whatever) or don't have bonus %hit (if you're a caster type or just don't have the gear for it), you can still hit your opponent a few times for at least a bit of damage and not have to switch weapons.

Maybe Blizzard wanted to justify such high item level with something more than +fishing? :D

I don't mean this to be a silly question, but I'm wondering why the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole comes with a (relatively) high damage spec: 186.5 dps. Presumably at level 68+ your normal weapon would have significantly better stats for fighting. The only thing I can think of is that it would allow you to use it for killing some low-level mobs that pester you while fishing, saving you from having to do the pole/weapon swap (if you are a melee class).

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting mine for the +30 fishing skill and the underwater breathing.
