I finally caught Ironjaw!!

I have been fishing for about 1-2 hours for the past 3 nights, and have had no luck.. with roughly 1100 casts and still no sign of him. I was starting to think maybe I was too low lvl for the achievement (who knows, most people do this when they're high lvl I'm assuming), or that I didn't have a high enough skill level. Or maybe I was doing it at a bad time of the day, lol (up to 3am server time).

Finally though, today I decided to take some advice of what I've read in this thread... I bought a few water walking pots, and went to the back of the Forlorn Cavern, laid down on top of the water, and I managed to catch Old Ironjaw before my first pot was up (within 5 minutes).

My char is a lvl 41 ally and my fishing level is 300(+5). I did not have to use any lures to be able to catch him. I caught him at around 1pm server time.

I have no idea if any of these variables really even matter, but I do find it funny that I caught him so quickly once I laid down at the back!!

If you haven't found him, just keep trying! Put on some good music & sit back and relax. You'll get him eventually! :)

Well no Ironjaw yet. Spent almost 3 hours fishing at the back of the Forlorn Cavern last night. Ran through the main gates and got to the back of the cavern before the guards beat me to a pulp.
Quite a few alliance came to 'check me out'. A /wave and /salute usually resulted in them leaving me alone or fishing close by. One person did decide they would hit me with their fishing rod every few minutes but they soon got bored when I didn't retaliate.
All was going well until a DK ran straight up to me, kicked me to death while I was lied down and proceeded to corpse camp me for the next 15 minutes.
Oh well there's always tommorrow for another attempt.
Will let you know when he's in the bag :)

I just wanted to thank everyone here for your posts, after reading them it made me want to go fishing for Old Ironjaw myself. I started out the day by doing my daily cooking and fishing quests. The cooking quest was the Sewer stew quest. When I was down in the sewer dropping off my goods to finish the cooking quest I noticed that there were a lot of folks fishing, which made it easy to guess what the fishing quest in Dal was today. So I went back up and grabbed the quest and headed back down again, 10 to 15 pulls later I got my Corroded Jewelry . I turned the item in and got my goodie bag, to my happy surprise there was a Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat in the bag!!! Of course I tried the bad boy on and it looks good….

My next stop was to Shatt for that daily quest, which turned out to be Crocolisks in the City. Took the port to Org and had him fished up in 15 to 20 pulls. After taking care of some business in Org, I figured “what the heck” I would give SW a shot. I followed the instruction laid out in the forum and made my way to Stormwind Harbor. While hugging the cliff I saw the area name change to Stormwind Harbor, as I continued north I noticed that the Name of the area changed to Stormwind City, I was still south of the Harbor and could not see it yet. As there was no place to stand and fish, I popped a water walking potion and let my line fly to see what would happen. It worked, I right clicked my bobber and “BONG” I get the The Fishing Diplomat achievement. I then decided to make my way to the Light house; the water walking made it an easy ride to get there.

So here I am looking at Stormwind Harbor debating if I want to go for the Triple Crown or not and also looking for any signs of life that might come my way. I just then remembered that before I got here, that there were calls out in the trade channel that UC was under attack. I figured that if the Alliance are up sacking UC that this might be the best time to run the gauntlet to IF. So off I went into Stormwind like a streakier running across a football field. After a wrong turn or two I finally find my way to the Tram tunnel. The whole time ridding through the City I didn’t see a soul, not counting the city guards that were on my butt. I decided not to take the Tram and made the long run to IF instead.

While in the tunnel I noticed that my PvP icon started its cool down timer. I thought that was good just in case I see any Alliance players on the IF side of the tunnel, they wouldn’t be able to attack me. I make it to the IF side and there is no one in site. Once I cross over into IF, I jump onto my ride and hooked a right heading for Forlorn Cavern like a bat out of Hell. It wasn’t long before I picked up my first set of Argos from the city guards and the chase is on. I’m now praying I don’t get wacked off my ride, so I just kept my “W” key mashed down and head into the next area. As soon as I hit the new area I picked up three more guards and ran smack over some Alliance player. I had no time to look back to see if he picked up the chase or to see what LvL he was. Now I’m thinking, if make it to the cavern ill head for the back of the pool and take the death that the guards are sure to give me, rez then run back and start fishing. I make it into the cavern and head strait for the back of the pool. As soon as I get to the back wall I turn to see the guards making there way across the pool coming for yours truly. Then just as there half way across the pool, they make a 180 degree turn and head back out of the cavern!!! I can’t believe I just made it all the way here and not one death.

Now that I’m here I take a quick look around the cavern to see if I have picked up the interest of any Alliance players and pull my fishing pole out for what I hope to be some good uninterrupted stealth fishing. The area is clear so I type /sleep and start fishing. Here is where you guys and gals are really going to hate me. After only seeing three Alliance players run past with out so much as a glance my way, I pull up Old Ironjaw on my 41st pull… I get some Gratzes from my guild mates and harth back to Dal. I'm starting to think my new fishing hat is my new” lucky fishing hat”.

Yesterday my gf went on her NE character and tried Old Ironjaw. She copied me, got herself a couple of water walking potions and went to the back of the pool in Forlorn cavern, lied down and started to fish. It took 11 minutes for her to get Old Ironjaw.
I will try it on my other characters this weekend, see if the lying down actually helps.

I managed to catch Old Crafy on my human level 10.. I ran through the 'back door' and went towards the Valley of Honor. In my level I wouldn't want to come near those Troll Roof Stalkers. Since my low level made the guards chase me at very long distances I learned myself that if I while running frequently clicked "A" and "D" the guards/other mobs wouldn't be able to chase me in a straight line and instead they run zig-zag. Anyhow just wanted to let people know that if they play a roleplay server, like I do, and still are in the low levels but desire fishing then this achievement is indeed possible to complete! ;)

I've been spending hoursrecently in the forlorn cavern vainly trying to get OI to bite...
Literally filling my bags up each time, and now that it's no longer possible to fish from the Mystic Ward pool it's getting more than a little soul-destroying spending hour after hour on my own in the arse end of IF with only my randompet macro and late night guildchat for company/sanity saving :(

Day 1. Over one hour standing in the inner end of the pool in Forlorn Cavern, no Ironjaw.
Day 2. Over one and a half hour standing at the fellas that hand out pets in Forlorn Cavern, no Ironjaw.
Day 3. 20 minutes at the pet dealers in Forlorn Cavern, no Ironjaw.
While fishing on day 3 I read this post, and since all horde players seem to catch it in the inner end of the pool while lying down I thought I ought to try it too. Swam in to the inner end, cast Frost Path and jumped up on the surface, angled some Bright Baubles and lie down. 6 minutes later I got Ironjaw.
Perhaps it's just coincidence, but perhaps it makes it easier to catch him lying down, regardless of faction....

Now I just have to get to Orgrimmar and try and lie there too while fishing (spent almost two hours there this weekend, standing behind the waterfall, only small fishes).

Thankyou for your help so far :)

So I got Old Ironjaw relatively painlessly on my PvE server... I thought I'd pass on my own hard-fought wisdom! So, Old Ironjaw for Horde:

1. Have the proper skill
You need 75 to stop fish getting away. I recommend getting that first, and not using lures. Just fish in Orgrimmar (try and get Old Crafty!) then head out to Ironforge.

2. Learn Stormwind and Ironforge
Check out maps, and plan out where you want to go. You'll want to know where Stockades is in Stormwind, where the Tram is in both cities, and how to go to the Forlorn Cavern. If you have an Alliance alt, go check these out and notice where they are. You can also create an alt and do this spotting with them.

3. Pick an unpopular time
Early morning on weekends is great, plus it's what a fisherman would do. Otherwise, late nights is good. Just don't go on a Thursday night...

4. Head to Stormwind
Why Stormwind? If you're fishing for Ironjaw in Ironforge, you might as well catch "The Fishing Diplomat" along the way, which involves fishing in Stormwind. You can also do Stockades, which is an easy Achievement.

5. Sprint to Stockades
Guards WILL spot you coming in Stormwind, even if you're stealth, as city guards can see through stealth and are now level 75. Just remember where you're going and run for it. You WILL most likely need to corpse run, which is a pain in the ass. Just keep going towards Stockades, and enter the instance to be safe. You can take a breath and go get a soda now.

6. Finish Stockades.
Achievement! A hero is you!

7. Run out of Stockades and head to a canal
The guards outside the instance will aggro, so what you want to do is quickly jump in the water. Swim along the bottom to avoid being seen (if you must, come up for air then go back down.)

8. Head to the end of a canal
Spot a quiet end of the canal, and quickly get out. Fish. Achievement! Jump back in.

8. Swim towards the Tram
Just swim at the bottom of the canal until you reach the Dwarven District. Get out and RUN to the tram. You'll lose the NPCs when you enter the Tram instance portal. Careful of players inside. You can hide in the tunnel, and move on board where you see nobody.

9. Ride the tram to Ironforge
Hope nobody ganks you on the way...

10. RUN to the Forlorn Cavern
Guards WILL aggro, but if you make it to the corner of the Forlorn Cavern, they'll let you be. Players are another problem; most likely they'll kill you. It's ok, the run isn't as bad as Stormwind.

11. /lie down
Go to the very corner, and lie down. You'll be less visible.

12. Fish Ironjaw!
Be prepared to spend some time here. There'll be other people fishing, but if they're fishermen, they'll most likely leave you alone. Be wary of people stopping and studying you... Most likely they're working up the nerve to attack you, or asking for help on General chat. You WILL get ganked, so be prepared for it... But if you behave in a friendly manner with other fishermen, there's a chance they'll tell people to leave you alone.

Fishing Old Ironjaw as Horde is exciting, and I recommend it as you level up. It'll make the skill-up process a LOT more exciting as you're on edge throughout it all. Trust me, it does make things more fun. :)

It took me 400 casts to get Old Ironjaw, but results vary wildly. Old Crafty, who is supposed to have the same drop rate, took me 1500 casts.

Be aware that catching Old Ironjaw will pop up a BoP confirmation message. Don't recast too quickly; you wouldn't want to lose Ironjaw!!

NOTE: Naturally, this is a LOT easier with stealth, but you'll still corpse-walk a bit. In the Forlorn Cavern, just stealth when you see someone stopping and watching you; they might decide to try and spot you out (say, by using AoE), but many times this will discourage them.

do you need a minimum fishing level to catch Old Ironjaw and Old Crafty?

Requires fishing 75 to stop "your fish got away" messages. I would fish in stonebull or crystal lake until your skill is 25-50. Then buy the appropriate lure. I think the +75 lure requires fishing 100 or something.

So Saturday a friend and I went down to IF around 9am in the morning to fish. I'm a disc priest and he's a prot warrior, both of us in t6/sunwell gear. I have a bank on alliance side camped at the cavern, so before we got there I talked to the alliance fishing and they all agreed to play nice (i suggest everyone do this if possible, alliance were much more understanding).
We fished for about an hour unobstructed, then a frost mage and a combat rogue attacked us and we crushed them. Ten minutes later we heard the mage shouting and knew trouble was gonna happen. The mage and rogue came back with a ret pally and hunter and once again my friend and I killed all 4 of them lol. Then several minutes later the mage and rogue came back with a different hunter and we killed all three of them. After that the rogue and mage /bowed before us and portaled out. We fished for another hour unobstructed until my warrior friend had to leave. I continued fishing for another hour, I was ganked twice, however after each gank I logged onto my ally char and talked to the ganker and they agreed to leave me alone. Altogether 3 hours of fishing, around 600 casts and no ironjaw for either of us. We'll be back next Saturday to once again own Ironjaw and any alliance that come our way :)

I guess this is the official Ironjaw thread there. I had plans to start working on this early in the day but alliance wouldn't have it. I've decided to play alts until the cavern is free. At various times I attempted to fish only to find a few alliance fishers ready to kill me. I've learned to stay as a ghost until I'm sure its safe. The cavern was finally clear tonight around 7pm. There were also three other horde in a guild working on it. We all got about 40mins of fishing before the allies decided it was time to stop. Hopefully, Ironjaw will take less catches than Crafty (1600). Otherwise, my main is not doing any dungeons or raiding for a long time.

~270 catches so far
1x Green Pants
1x Green Chest
0x Ironjaw

Update

After a little over 900 catches, Ironjaw is mine. I'm really happy it didn't take as long to get Ironjaw as Crafty (1500). Sunday and today the alliance were much more friendly. I did get killed a few times but they usually left me alone after killing me once. I'm all ready for Wrath now except hoping the RNG gives me the final daily quest I have been needing for a week or so.

It's impossible to fish on Malygos server in Ironforge (I'm Horde). There are always fisherman there... and sometimes they're nice and just fish with me (since we're all there for the same cause...fish) but most of the time they're mean and go out of their way to kill me. I never killed an alliance player fishing in Orgrimmar. I was fishing next to a 70 human warlock the other day in Orgrimmar. It's just fish. T___T

Where is the fishmen's code!? :P

/rant

My troll has been parked in the back of the Forlorn Cavern in IF for about a day or so now. Closing in on the 500 fish mark, multiple ganks, one low level dwarf hunter scared to death when he flagged after casting Hunter's Mark on me (who knew dwarf legs could move that fast?). Still no Ironjaw.

The run in to Forlorn Cavern took 3 deaths, would have been 2, but some Draenei shammy was fast on the earth shock as I dove into the "ditch" by the bridge.

Now, to figure out if I can water walk in to Ghaz after I get through this fun :-)

I was at IF this weekend leveling my fishing skill and hoping that I might catch Old Ironjaw at the same time. There was a level 70 horde there obviously trying to catch Ironjaw as well. I left him alone as did another alliance guy who was fishing. Sure enough, the horde caught him - I knew as soon as it happened by the combination of the achievement glow and the big dance he did.

He was nice enough to log in a few minutes later with an alliance alt so he could thank us for leaving him alone.

My quest for Ironjaw continues...at least I'm now at 375 skill.

finally got old ironjaw today! :)

A horde fishing in IF is a real pain on my server and had to corpse run so many times it wasn''t funny, I would definitely recommend dying in stormwind then corpse running the tram, get rezzed at the spirit healer south of IF then try to drag yourself in a few a times as possible to forlorn caverns.

I took over 800 fish to get him if anyone is keeping count.

I'm fishing in IF righttt now. 70 Belf.
I ran in and died 3 times to get to the forlorn cavern~!
I can keep a pretty low profile by sitting while fishing.
Sometimes 70s see me and start attacking me~

a lot of lowbies swim up to me, right click me and either start attacking or they swim away.

I'm at 614 casts and still no ironjaw. Boreddd out of my mind. ~_~
