I was fishing along the sea shore of Dragonblight near it's western border when I caught the sea turtle. This was fishing a school (pool) of Imperial Manta Ray along the sea shore. I have throttled back my hunt for the world infamous, notorious dread pirate turtle aka the "Great Pink Sea Snail" What I have done, is when I get to 200 or more Northern Spices (i keep 100 stack on stand by...not sure why I just tend to roll like that) I will then fish up 200 or so of each of the 3 types of fish for the Fish Feast - casting only in pools. This 1) gives me some income for the time I spent fishing, makes use of the abundant spice collection (nothing to spend them on anyways, unless they come out with an apron to match this way nifty hat i got while i am cooking at warp 9...but I digress. I also have decidedly NOT kept count of how many times i have done this, or pool fish for other things, just cause I really do not want to know how many times I cast looking for this mount. As far as the Salty title, it is even more difficult for myself; working nights, if I am up at 4 pm - the wife and kids expect to have my attentions. Rightly so. I fish for about 7 hours a day. I started fishing in Howling Fjord. I figured I would try to catch 2 birds in one lake. I ended up catching the Dark Herring 3 times in one sitting 3 days ago. I got bored with Fangtooth Herring and moved to the Frozen Sea. Many more pools concentrated together. I have not stopped fishing. I am up to 6100 casts and I even opened up a ticket thinking that I was doing something wrong. I stopped doing my daily quest, stopped talking to people, pretty much cut myself off from enjoying anything about the game and even real life. I would see a turtle on TV or a picture on the internet that was unrelated and that would induce a marathon of fishing. I have finally decided to stop trying for this mount. It's cute and all but I am really obsessing too much with this whole thing. I have read every forum post about it and GMs tell me that it could take 1 cast or 10000 casts. As a lvl 80 priest i wanted some cooked "Fangtooth Herring" (mana bonus), so i took my good old lvl 450 fisher alt (Warrior) to Howling Fjord for some Herring Fishing. I plan was also to log the Fangtooth Herring Schools (in the addon gatherer) in the area so i was ready if i wanted to enter Kalu'ak Fishing Derby some day. My 80 warrior is a coin master and Kalu'ak exhaled (got the Kalu'ak fishingpole) - so i have done my share of fishing. When i was fishing the 40 Fangtooth Herring i needed yesterday - The sea Turtle droped,.. I had never heard about this mount - so i entered this page to read more.. Can't belive i got it without even trying. My problem now is that my new lvl 80 priest who has lvl 1 in fishing MUST have the mount to, as this one is my new main. I'll start training today. If it's only supposed to appear in schools, then maybe the item is bugged. I've seen several posts online of people claiming to have fished it out of open water, too. I've no reason not to believe them. You seem to have a Gm saying one thing, other GM's saying another. my opinion is they put this mount in the schools so that the fish bots, as there are many, could not catch the mount. I don't know for a fact that it cant be caught in open water, but if it could, I think we would see a lot of the fish bots talking about how they got it in open water.
