I helped a friend with this the other day, I have both Horde and Alliance. He asked 2 friends from alliance to come and I came on horde with a friend as well.
So in all, 5 people (including the person trying to win)

He won.

You don't need massive raid groups for it.
When I won this all I had 1 was person with me and yes I was on a high populated server.

Really, this achievement is only dictated by luck if you let it. Some social engineering will get you this title. I won this achievement 2 weeks in a row, for the rod and the trinket...and this was back in the day when raids of 40+ ally would camp it. So I am tired of hearing people on this board cry about RNG and luck. You make your own luck in this game. It was no luck that my 1st 2 weeks doing this that I got it both times.

1) Pick a side/path and keep to it. Practice your route before the contest, as all the pools are in the same place, just replaced by Tastyfish.

2) Get about 10-15 friends to come with you. Offer to pay them each 100g or so for their 40 min of time. Trust me, this is how I won my 1st two weeks doing this achievement.

3) Send 2 groups of 3-4 roaming every coast, killing every ally they find. This is your gank group. It will immediately weed out some of your competition.

4) Keep 2 with you as bodyguards. Never stop to help them kill someone, always fish. Have a pally be 1 of your bodyguards, for mount increase speed aura.

5) Send 1 group of 2 people as your "spotters". They run up and down and spot pools for you. It is best if they are male tauren. If any ally come by, kill them. If any horde come by, get your 2 tauren friends in the water, jumping up and down, making it near impossible to click on the catch for the competitor.

6) Carry Elixir of Water Walking with you so you can easily cross any water obstructions and easily maneuver to get any pool. Or have a DK be one of your bodyguards.

7) Lastly, don't bother with setting your stone to BB. Have a summon team consisting of a Warlock and 2 friends be ready right @ the turn in. Not only do summons have no cast time, but it will put you closer to the turn in. This contest is ALL about using every last second. When you are at around 35 tastyfish, have them summon you, so that the absolute second you get all 40, you can click accept on your summon and turn it in.

Thats about it. You follow those 7 rules exactly and I promise you, you will win whenever you want to win. You may think that some of my tactics are semi-dick moves. But hey, I have been known to go to STV and win the contest weeks in a row for no better reason than to stop people from getting their achievement. :-D

So, after winning this contest way back when it started on my warlock, on the second week, I have since changed to a DK, and let me tell ya, bad luck is really getting me down.

I got everything else for my new Salty title pretty easy and quickly (Pinchy droipped in 24 casts, vs 18 months of fishing last time)

But every week I end up at 38-39 when the winner gets anounced. so depressing. Half the time it's because I get a yellowtail 2-3 times in a row and done.

Oh well, here's hoping for next week. Cause I must do this achievement vs the enw one, because I must have the fishing rod!

All the tips are good, I'm sorry though you are doing yourself a HUGE injustice thinking this is a solo endeavor.

YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME:
1) Make a raid.
2) Hearthstone at Booty Bay. kicking a dead horse

Raid Group 1: You and a friend
3) You fish ONLY! No distractions, no other actions, if you're not moving to next closest pool to fish, you are FISHING.
4) Get your best friend to help out, scouting pools, giving you water walking: whatever support he can provide - NO PVP

Raid Groups 2 -3
5) The best PvP team you can find. Sick on the opposite faction, up and down both shores. Make sure they know DO NOT CORPSE CAMP ANYONE. You need to kill all opposite faction anglers at least once.

Raid Groups 4-5
6) This is your same faction squad. They need Kodos, Mammoths and fishing poles. If they are close to you, have them cover pools with mounts, or fish the far away pools as fast as possible.

7) Groups 2-5 need to understand they are buying time for you. All they need to do is delay the fisher a pool or 2, or 1 corpse run, and their job is complete. Once they throw a fisher off time, move on to the next one.

This strat works flawlessly. We have used it to own the Tourney and it is 8-0-1 so far. The 1 draw being the sunday we didn't have a fisher in the tournament, but held off the Tournament being won til the raid started that night at 6pm.

You can say what you want about courtesy, blah blah blah. You have to play win, you can either control your destiny or let it be controlled for you.

I've been trying every week for 3 months and finally got it :)
Last tries were quite disastrous. I used to end with 28-40 fish when the winner was announced, and that's it.

This time, however, I finally got this streak of luck which I was missing before. It's been my second tiem fishing at the East Coast (usually sticked to mid-West coast). For the first 8-9 minutes I got most of my pools all to myself, so when other competitors started swarming my area after the 10min mark, I was much ahead already.

I finished in 17 minutes, so the time isn't all that great (usually it's 16m on my server). I squeeled like a little girl after getting the achievement and my hands trembled for good 30 minutes afterward.

So yeah, I would agree - do not give up, try week afetr week and you will get it at some point for sure. :-))

I had all the achievements for "Salty" except this one for a good 6 months. I fished the tournament nearly every Sunday and seemed to miss it by a few fish each week. Sometimes I'd get frustrated and not attend for a week or more. I decided to try the small troll island just for kicks one weekend.

Several minutes before it began I noticed a few people come by the island and I hoped they would just pass through.

Well the whistle blew and to my surprise their was no one else around, there were always 2-3 nodes spawned within yards of each other. I couldn't believe it.

After just 14 minutes I had 40, hearthed with my heart pounding, and chose the trinket.

I am 31 years old and acted like a school child when I saw my name across the screen, and had finally earned two of my most gratifying achievements in the game.

My wife just giggled and gave me a hug, she knew how important it was to me.

Don't give it up, the day will come......and when it does......well you'll just have to find out.

tis a sad day for me as well. I caught my first 20 fish in 5 minutes. Great start.. after that people showed up and started fishing in my pools, had to move around a lot etc. Well I caught my 40th 15 mintues later and right as I was hearthing the winner was announced.. Ive won this contest once on a pvp server but I transferred to a PVE server to try my hand and lemme tell you the competition is fierce. Was hoping to be one of the few to win it on a pve and pvp high pop servers.

Won it for the second week at 17 minute mark again.

The only other thing to add with fishing on your own node is try to keep within the same area of a group of nodes instead of running in one direction.

Anyway I got my rod and trinket now so I'm bowing it at this point. :)

If you are looking for place to fish the only thing I can recommend is you do the scouting 30 mins or so beforehand.

If there are 2 people in the area odds on more will arrive soon or they will jump your nodes. The other thing to watch out for is guild names, a large number of the same guild throughout the zone suggests they will running interference.

What area did you guys fish in successfully? Last two times I stayed on Yojamba the whole time. This week was a goddamn disaster.

Not only did two people aside from me start there, but no Pools would spawn anyhow. I therefore moved south and did a circle between Yojamba, Grom'Gol and the island with elementals...

I got it yesterday in 17 minutes. Some suggestions based on what I did.

1. Hearth in BB. At LEAST 30 mins before the tourney starts (I was sick the first time I hearthed 5 mins before tourney and couldn't get back).

2. Arrive in STV at least 30 minutes before the tourney starts. Scout out the area to find where there are few people near the coast. This varies from server to server but in my case the north end tended to be more empty.

3. I used Lager as my only buff. I did an AquaDynamic just before the tourney started but the time it takes to apply it is wasting time, while lager is instant buff.

4. Kit up as much as you can. I have 450 fish, Fish tracking, Jeweled fishing pole, Fishing hat, fast mount and water walking pots. Also being at a level that is gray to the mobs in STV is a must.

5. When getting your starting position if you can see 2 or more people within visible distance, move on.

6. Recast if in doubt. It is better to spend 3-5 seconds recasting then to wait and get nothing. I have casting set to my middle mouse button to speed this up.

7. Do not fish from someone elses node. Avoid if at all possible. Water walking is handy here to get away.

8. If someone is following you try doubling back. Nodes respawn quite fast but if they followed you from the previous one they tend to move in the other direction. especially if there is a node nearby.

9. I didn't use a macro, I watched the fish in my bag. What I did to do was split the first two tasty fish into two piles so I could watch at start of BP.

10. Hearth as soon as you get 40. I would also recommend before the tourney practise the run from the inn to the vendor. I've messed that up once (fell in the water).

11. Know exactly what it is you want to get when you win. I actually wasted 3 seconds not realising I had to pick one of them.

When I won, there were 3-4 others who were only 3 fish short. Once I hearthed I was in panic mode.

So the main points: PLAN PLAN PLAN!

After taking a few months off from fishing being entirely discouraged by STV to continue with Salty, I did my first STV this past weekend. Suffice it to say it didn't go well but I will definitely take some of these tips into account.

Does anyone have any advice for a good area with schools of fish that require minimal running between them? Or any strategies for a Druid? I have tons of water walking pots cause I'm an alchemist but I don't know what else can help. And do lures help at all even if I'm maxed at 450 because I feel like I catch an inordinate amount of junk fish.

I need some support too :P

It was my second time this weekend, I ended up with 36 fish when they announced the winner after 17 minutes. This time, I made sure all my casts were good, had water walking pots stocked etc...I think it just was the luck factor that totally sucked.

There were times where I just ran around the island and waited for the spawns, as no pools would appear at all... Besides, there were 2 people in the prettymuch same place so it was hard to fish anything alone.

Still, I think it was a pretty OK attempt, so I will stay at the same spot and hope for a better luck next week ;-)

Tried for my first time this weekend; hit the east shore of Stranglethorn, starting at the top. I had one elixer of water walking, level 76, with the walrus guy fishing pole.

I had 34 when the winner was announced. I think I spent a little too much time running between the upper part of the east coast and the lower. There were a few 80s in the area, RP server, no PVP, but enough that I had to bypass or stop fishing a pool at least twice.

Caught 8 or so junk fish.

I finally got the Salty title yesterday after my shockingly easy STV win (compared to all the other times I've tried over the months). I've fished both sides (usually East, sometimes West), and typically I'd start in the NE corner (of the fishable area) and work my way down. I've had anywhere between 20-39 fish caught before losing in the past, and at various different completion times, so I've definitely seen how much luck can play a difference. The last couple of weeks that I've done it have definitely been slower in terms of competition, but yesterday was shocking.

I started in the SE corner this time, mounted, and only mounted once more the entire time, when I was going from 39 to 40. I didn't see a soul, from fish 1-40, and had reasonably good luck with casting/drops, and just walked up the coast from pool to pool, so things went surprisingly quickly. All together it took between 15-20 min and I was able to win cleanly without anyone right on my heels.

Granted, I'm on a PvE server (Azjol-Nerub), so this may not apply to everyone, but I would agree with the above poster about the east side being better than the west, if nothing else because you really don't need water-walking nearly as much as you do on the west side.

Good luck to everyone else still trying!

PS. Those few seconds while I was hearthing and typing "40! FTW!" into my friends' chat were definitely the most exciting I've had in awhile playing WoW.

Won this last week, have been trying almost every week since New Year. So about 20 attempts, over five months, given two I missed where I couldn't be on the server on time.

Finally won after 17mins, fishing around the troll ruins on the east coast.

Using water-walking potions and HS at BB.

This and the Skyshatter have been the worst things I've given myself to earn in the game. Awful.

Tips I'd give: Get to BB and set HS early - comedians like to kill the innkeeper. I lost at least one competition because I had to waste time waiting for him to respawn. Get there a bit earlier and set HS.

Use water walking, potions or spell. It's only a small edge - but that edge'll win you it, making it easy to use some pools land-bound types can't and making travel quicker.

I tried both west and east coast - I preferred east. Fewer nodes, but enough, and less competition. YMMV.

edit: good luck.

Well, I won this contest yesterday, on my second try, in like 15 minutes. Under 20 anyway.

I've only been in this contest once before, before patch 3.1. First time I was at about 27 fish when the contest was won and it was very frustrating. I got 40 fish in like 30 minutes or so.

Yesterday, I started fishing at the same spot. The contest started like 2 minutes before 2pm, while I was just charging a random mob. Killed that poor fella in a sec and headed to water. Luckily, there was a pool like 5-6 seconds of walking away from the spot. Started fishing, got only two fish from the first school.

All around was quiet, the same as like the first time. No ally, no competition. I've found another school, got another 3 or 4 and boom! Like several feet away, FOUR schools spawned on an area of about 20 seconds of walking (from first to last school). Fished those four with no others nearby. Then moved to another one when I've heard a "charge" sound. Oh, I forgot, the main channel was fool of other guys complaining about ganking allies. I didn't even turn my head, nor changed my perspective, I was concentrating on the bobber, thinking that I will get as many fish I could before I die. The ramblings continued behind me while I finished the spot.

Without even looking at what happened, I moved a bit north to another school. Two allies were moving around and the "charge" sound again. Well, apparently what happened is that two hordies (warriors) (I am horde and warriror as well) were fishing not very far from my spots and got ganked by a group of three allies (rogue and two mana users - didn't check the classes, I just saw the targets). They were getting revenge and were trying not to let those allies win. Got invited to a group and I've found myself having two bodyguards. The guys were great and very helpful, I got sapped and in combat several times but every time I was just getting back to fishing, not fighting at all, while they took care of the enemies. While the allies were on res timers, they were moving back and forth near water to find other schools.

So, all in all, I was very lucky and won in like no time. The 40th fish was a pain, I caught at least 5 other fish before catching it and every time I was keeping my finger on the hs shortcut.

By the way, I am not into the pvp thing at all, I don't like it (maybe it's because I suck at it) and I thought that the first time I would get attacked during the contest, I would give up - spending time fighting is not good news for your chances of winning.

Editing: Oh, by the way, some people just can't lose. After turning in and getting my fishing pole, I got ganked like several times in BB. Two or three hours later, while fishing in the Dalaran fountain, one of those ally guys was covering ONLY my bobber. I was not frustrated at all, after all I was using the best fishing rod in game :P He eventually got bored and went away.

Another Sunday, Another Loss.

After a ton of daily-doing, I -finally- got a usable drop in my bag of fishing treasures - the spun line for the pole. Quite convinced this was the extra little bit I needed, I boldly headed to the Ruins by the Crystal Shore to try my new fishing points (and new strategy, courtesy of all y'all). Firmly convinced that today would be the day, I intensely fished until I got 40 - then hurriedly hearthed back to Booty Bay.

Somewhere in the middle of the running and elixir-drinking, the tourney had already been won...and I'd missed the announcement long ago. Again, I didn't even get close.

I'm thinking about switching realms. Not permanently, but to win. I play on Runetotem, which is a veritable hotbed of angling activity. Anyone else want to talk about their realm? The tournament is always won in mine in twenty minutes or less. Tell me about yours; I need to go somewhere where I can have more time. Not that I want to take it away from any of you, and I can't switch realms for several weeks. But I'm scouting locations.
