And one other note, nonameform. I think you will find that the harder you have to work for the win, the better it will feel when you finally get it. Don't let all those other factors discourage you, just remember that everyone else has to deal with them too, and so it is an advantage for you if you can figure out how to get through those difficulties. Think of how the contest will be a true achievement for you when you finally win it, and try to be inspired by that fact to only work harder at getting it, not get discouraged by it.

Also remember there is a lot of luck involved in winning. You can do everything perfect for weeks in a row and just never quite get the perfect drop pattern. This happened for me many times before I finally won. When things finally go perfect, it feels amazing.

Just remember, that getting the perfect drop pattern won't mean you win unless you are doing everything else right first, so just keep plugging at it and improving on your technique and that drop pattern will happen eventually for you.

Good luck!

We Had It All Along *cough* doesn't require any more luck than many of the other PvP achievements. It simply requires a group of people working together towards the same goal. I got it with a guild premade where we simply capped 2 bases and held the third until the very end. Sure it requires a good group, but so do many of the other PvP achievements (e.g. Defense of the Ancients, Stormtrooper, The Alterac Blitz, Resilient Victory to name a few). I don't think you could get any of those other achievements without a really good group actively working towards each one specifically, and that's not going to happen without a premade.

Even though this is a very old thread, I believe my post is about the "spirit" of STV contest too. As a foreword: I do try to win STV for the title and the pole. I was going to try STV before achievements were introduced, but since I switched factions and had to level character once again to level cap, I had no time to actually try the contest in the past. I've read some strategies and posts on it and it scarred me off somewhat.

After losing STV yet another time today, I start to question why Blizzard didn't change the quest since they introduced achievements. In my opinion, each character should have only one chance to win the contest and receive both the pole and trinket as rewards. Those people who have already won the contest in the past, should be able to redeem trinket or pole from Riggle Bassbait. Also they should only be able to turn in fish for money and items after winning the contest.

While some achievements do require luck (for example, We Had It All Along *cough*), most of them can be completed any time in the game. STV on the other hand is a one time per week opportunity that lasts somewhere between 15 to 20 minutes on my server. Chances are that with twinks and people who have already won the contest in the past messing around, I won't win it in foreseeable future.

I had no problem fishing in Bay of Storms for about 8 hours in a row and never seeing a single rare fish for achievement, but I have problem winning STV due to different factors. Sometimes it's that little lvl 19 twink who catches those 1-2 fishes that would made me a winner, sometimes it's people who have already won in the past, but who want to get either the trinket or the pole on their second attempt. I even know people who have won STV on my server more than 2 times on a single char.

I believe that during the times of old PVP ranking system, there were some rules of conduct that made people retire, after achieving High Warlord/Grand Marshal rank, so that the others could try to achieve that too. I don't understand why people can't stick with the same rules with STV and allow others to win. I personally don't hate people who win the contest and I always congratulate them, if they are from my faction, but if I see people winning twice, it makes me quite angry to be honest.

Also the twinks. Why they want to fish during the contest> They have little to no chance ever winning the contest as they have problems fishing in the area. Even if they do fish at Yojamba Isle, they will have trouble reaching two pools north from it as there are mobs. Without proper guardians, they just have to stick to those pools that spawn around the isle thus greatly reducing their chances to win. But I bet most of them come to fish for Keefer's Angelfish and not to win the contest, so if they actually start fishing before the contest winner was announced, they're doing a great job of screwing it up for the others, their own faction or not. There must be a special hell for them. It's the same sort of people who needs to fish in your pool after the contest is over, even though there are pools for everyone to stay busy for 2 hours. I seriously don't understand that: contest is over, you're trying to make some gold/catch a rare fish, so why bother sharing your pool with someone, if you can just move along the coast and fish there, getting more fishes?

Contest for me now is mindless grinding. I'm sure that I will say it was fun, if I win, but since I'm losing (39 fishes is my best result) I don't find it funny at all. On Saturday night I come to Booty Bay to set my hearthstone and move to one of the places where pools spawn. I bring Elixir of Water Walking with me, I bring my fishing boots that have a Minor Speed enchant on them and I remap my mounting button, so I can move faster to a distant pool. I sit there in front of PC 15-20 minutes before the contest and I have to try to move all of my RL appointments to other days or different time, so I can try to win yet again. Those 20 minutes are the most annoying 20 minutes of WoW I have every week and I simply can't quit there, considering that I do want to win. Sometimes I even start cursing when I see bugged pools, which are very hard to fish from, when I pass them, or when my bobber just doesn't want to land into the pool.

Changes that were made to fishing in WoTLK sure made it easier for most people, but they also sky rocketed the competition in STV, as people don't have to backtrack to old zones to level fishing as I did in the past. In my opinion, incoming changes to mounts and mounting speed, will make competition last even less time and it might even attract more people than there are now. I want to appraise Blizzard for making fishing more acceptable for masses, but I want to blame them also for ruining the contest. Wish I was smart enough to try it before WotLK.

Long time reader, first time poster. :)

My 70 mage is Salty (Rothchild) although he was my main in BC, I've re-joined the faith and am now working on getting Salty on Nicaea, my priest. (yah, I'm nuts like that) lol

I personally can understand why someone might have a reaction to seeing a Salty continue to compete, but I agree with those who say it's a competition and it's fair game to go back and keep going. I can't see doing it myself, although, like I said, I'm certainly trying on alts.

Yesterday, out of habit, I decided to participate in the Contest even though I won last week. I made my way to Yojamba Isle, only to find a friend whom I had tipped off on my winning location. He was quite miffed to see me there, although he was trying to stay polite.

After a few minutes of being repeatedly challenged to a duel by a nearby twink, and seeing the twinks gather round on the island, I understood. It was time to move on. Sure, I wanted the trinket pretty bad, but hey, I have the title and the fishing pole... That's all I really need.

I used my Loop of the Kirin Tor and went to set my hearthstone in Dalaran. I guess I realized it was time to hang my fishing hat as far as the STV contest goes.

That afternoon, I healed a couple of heroics for my guildies. Still, it feels weird not being on Yojamba swearing at twink packs. Who knew I'd miss it...

Well, I've finally won the tournament two weeks ago on a PVP-Server. I did bring some friends for an escort, because in previous attempts I have been attacked by Alliance players. So they simply were around, to discourage players from attacking me. Otherwise they did nothing. On a PVE Server this would not have been nessesary.

That's what I've been missing - the spirit. I've infrequently tried to win the tourney over the years on my other chars (I did switch my main going from classic to bc and again going to lk). And before the achievment was implemented, I've had much less troube with the opposite faction than now.

Well I still continue to fish after someone won, since after all the time I'm still missing the boots, and after a winner is announced, it's much more back to the "original" spirit.

On a sidenote: I don't try to win the tourney for a second time. Should I do, I'd be surprised, but I would definitly not turn in a third win, I do think that it would be rude.

I agree, and I've won it twice. I could have won it three times, but I decided to help somebody else win, and he did despite having fewer tastyfish than me when I helped him. I consider that my third victory by proxy. I stopped soon after since I had gotten every item you can get from the contest (including the Rockhide Strongfish). I probably could have won it five times by now if I had wanted to, and I'm not alone. A lot of the people on these forums have pretty much figured out the contest. I won both times before it was even required by the title.

I think the title is the problem. People have some weird fixation with titles. I don't mind if most people go for it, since most people play fair. The fact, though? Some people will cheat if a title is involved. And yeah, using guildies to screw with other anglers is cheating.

Well every week I have gone there now for .....6 months..maybe 8...cant remember.

Anyway I am usually always on 38, and usually end up having 10 oilys. I have twice been caught hearthing. Also many times I have seen the "OMGLOL FIRST TIME I BE HERE, I BETEZ OU NOOBSSSS LOLRFOLLOL!!!!!".

Its irritating, it makes me want to wrap my fishing line around there throat, and turn them into fishmeal.

But I have learnt just to swallow my pride and try again. Last person I encountered won twice using his guild to mammoth on pools.

People have said "use a scout" but I want to do it on my own. Also even if I wanted help, none of my guildies really give a damn.

So its back every week, hoping that maybe this time I will win.........=/...

Wish me luck 20 min to this weeks

I say it every sunday.....the tournament is where you separate the fisherboys from the fishermen. im all about throwing out thousands of casts for that super rare drop or for just plain fun don't get me wrong. however, anyone can do that. As for this unwritten rule about not winning after you have won twice? hogwash. a tournament win is like a beer. you'd step over your own mother just to get one. but you cant stop at one.....you want to drink another tournament....AND ANOTHER!

Heraklen, I think that sounds like a pretty good idea. Haha. And I agree with you and Azaguth. I also win solo. I don't bring friends to distract others by jumping in pools etc. and I keep to myself. I'm on a PvE server so I don't have to worry about being ganked or ganking others, however if i was on PvP server I would only do it if they were doing it to me (or else I would be pretty much forfeiting). Another thing that really bothers me is that a lot of the people who whisper me and insult me after I win are those who are constantly talking in general chat saying things like " OK. I've got 16 fish! What's everyone else at?!" and then a few minutes later " I'm at 28 now! How bout the rest of you?!" Honestly, I don't think the people that do that really have any right to complain since they're probably wasting all their time talking and complaining instead of fishing. : / I only use methods that any other participant can use (unless they're too low level to have an epic mount) and I don't win every time I participate. They say I'm not giving anyone else a chance... but if they're participating and are using all the methods they should be using and are paying attention they have just as much of a chance to win as I do.

I've won twice and I still compete. I have no qualms about it. It's not bad form, it's competition.

And it's not about guild ganking and being a jerk, I win solo, and have done so twice SINCE wrath came out.

I won't lie. It's not consistent. A lot of it is preparation, but then a lot of it comes down to luck.

10 oily blackmouths in a row isn't a lack of preparation, it's bad luck.

Getting ganked repeatedly may be poor preparation. You should have a general idea of where the opposing faction are and where they aren't on your server, or where they most likely fish.

It's considered bad form to compete to win after you've done it twice,as it stops others from winning.
It's an unwritten rule, but most stick to it,as it makes you look like a bit of an arse to others, especially since the inclusion of the achievement system.

llie

I understand why you do what you do , its like in real life where you defend your title , I have mixed emotions about this but at least doing what you do still is in the spirit of the competition.
Tho after 2 wins the only thing to feed is your own pride , maybe you should be a nice fellow , heart to booty bay not klicking on vendor and wave to the nr2 when they unknowingly runs to the vendor and "wins" even tho you were there first?

What I have objections about is that people use all means neccessary to win ... like having their whole guild running around killing or harassing other contestants , jumping on bobbers , placing mammoth in pools etc , thats not something I like about the extravaganza nowadays.

Thanks Triseult! I do do it for the enjoyment. :) And it's not that I blame people for being pissed. It's more that they all seem to be such sore losers and they can say some pretty rude things. I don't win to be a jerk... which is what they think. And if the people that complain at me for winning beat me sometime I would be the first to step up and congratulate them. :)

llie,

I'd certainly be pissed off at you if I was trying to win the contest and you kept winning it. At the same time, it would just motivate me to try and beat you, and the day that I did, I'd rub it in your face. :)

If enjoyment is the primary reason you do it, then by all means keep doing it!

Pre-WOTLK I did the fishing Extravaganza every Sunday. I did it for the fun of it and cause it was something different to do. I decided it would be fun to go all out so I even made a fishing outfit which included the fishing boots, gloves with the +2 to fishing that matched, the azure silk belt for swim speed boost, the hat from the fishing daily etc. I got the Salty title a couple weeks after Wrath came out. I continued to do the fishing extravaganza after that but not as often. Recently I started doing it again and have won 3 out of the 4 times i've done it since the expansion. It's been a bigger challenge though since the achievement came out cause there are a lot more people that do it. Last time i did it I won and afterwards had almost every other person whispering me and insulting me in general chat saying things like"She's cheating! She was won last time. I think she found a way to hack WoW! She couldnt have won already!" or " That Pally should be banned from the tournament cause she already has the title" or "Why don't you give everyone else a chance for once" or " You're such a greedy jerk". Anyway... I enjoy participating in the extravaganza and don't really see a reason why I should stop participating or winning just cause of a bunch of people who are only doing it for the title. I also think that that gives me an even bigger reason to participate. People that are rude to me about it just want to make me defend the title all the more. I've been giving it a lot of thought and I'm just not sure if it's worth it anymore. I don't like being harassed about it but at the same time dont want to give up something I like doing just so that every Tom, Dick and Harry out there can get another achievement and a title for it. :S What do you think? I would like to hear some opinions although I'm pretty sure some of them are going to based on whether the person has won it or not. Lol thanks :)

I would argue the Contest is the only instance in the game where Fishing is a pulse-pounding, competitive, stressful experience... but it's Fishing all the same.

I actually agree with this whole-heartedly. You wipe in a raid...big deal, you do a corpse run and try again...the only push is that you have a bedtime to meet.

the clock is pushing you hard in the tourney. its a 50lb weight over your head...and you only have one shot per week.

its the most competitive event in WoW right now. i love it (errr, not that i compete any more. :o )

The "advantage" to the twinks, I find, is that they are NOT expert at fishing, so can get pretty bad. An endless source of enjoyment for me is to see one try to fish from my pool, and land their bobber outside the edge of the pool, unaware the Contest pools have a much smaller radius than normal pools.

The other day, I even saw a twink on Yojamba Isle who had no idea you had to fish in pools to get the rare fish. She started fishing in open water, and did so for 10 mins before she realized she was probably doing something wrong. She had also asked me for lures before the start of the contest... Man that was priceless.

Then, as Raeliss pointed out, there's those who will follow you to the coast north of Yojamba in the hopes of stealing your pools, only to aggro crocolisks and die next to you... That always makes my day.
