I'd like my bobber to make a distinctive sound from that of everyone else's.

Is a distinctive sound worth more than a distinctive image? Or is the size of the bobber important - the fact it is so small means that sound becomes more important?

Distinctive sound is worth more than a distinctive image. Since it's being noticed, I'd say it's not "good sound." Clearly I'm not the only one who fishes with partial attention to other things -- did you know that if you keybind "loot what's under the mouse" you can read or crochet while fishing? :-)

Having a different sound for your bobber and everyone-else's-bobber would solve the problem for most of us. Having a different sound for different fishing poles might or might not actually help, but it would certainly be... fun!

I will consistently vote AGAINST reducing the number of catches needed to level fishing. With achievements and repeatable quests making fishing more popular, the amount of time we've been willing to spend leveling fishing remains the fundamental thing that identifies us as anglers -- even those just beginning to fish and those who've had bad luck on "The One That Didn't Get Away."

I'd second all motions for a fishing-specific bag (Tackle Box or Fishing Creel) and a Fishing Vest.

Speaking of The One That Didn't Get Away, I'd like to see a cooking recipe for Dark Herring. The achievement for cooking and eating this would be "Vengence is Sweet," the item description should say "Are you satisfied now?" and it should give a one-hour buff (as do other emotion foods) reading "Satisfied."

I second Al's suggestion :

"I wouldn't mind if one got a better "aim" in casting as one gets higher in skill. Maybe they could "tighten up" the trapezoidal area where casts can land, so one had more control over casting"

Its really annoying to come to a pool 10 secs earlier than other contestant, and thinking you can catch 2 fish before he gets here, only to have to recast 15 times to land into the pool.

Also its fairer to the ones who actually spent the time to lvl up to 450, since now you can fish from pool @ skill 1, maybe casting for them would be so frustrating that they lvl up too.

I also enjoy reading this thread, thought I would recap a bit, and add my own suggestion to the list:

Ideas so far: (some have been implemented in game already)

being able to customize your cast action
being able to customize your bobber
a new fishing pole
a cool new trinket.
28 or 32 slot fishing bag / tackle box
an achievement for unique fishing poles collected
a 'killable' dark herring
Something that emulates active trolling with a lure.
Different lures at different levels
specific lures for specific fish.
Accuracy tied to skill level.
Fishing boat!!
fish from my sea turtle mount
an option on the sound tab to make other fishermen's bobber silent
A fisherman's vest: ( w/ sockets & pockets )
a custom sound for your bobber
additional fishing dailies

I like most of these ideas, some are actually quite cool, a trout boat mount, useable only on water.
A vest with sockets and pockets - awesome! the different lures on the vest adding to certain types of fish, or
your fishing skill in general... things along this line.
A specific bag for all these cool new items - needed.

My own ideas to improve fishing include cooking skill as well. I think you will also like this idea. Fish food & Chum. To be used at the water side to create your own fishing pool.
I have not worked out all the details, so before it gets beat up; think on how you could make it work!

What I have thought about on this so far is that it would be skill based and recipe driven. Recipes acquired thru the typical game mechanics; quests, drops and (of course) fish-able loot. Each recipe would require it’s own mats; different types of fish, spices etc…more ingredients, more complex ingredients, harder to acquire ingredients for the higher end recipes. The cooking skill required would naturally go up as the harder recipes are used. And the fishing skill required would also go up in order to use the higher end fish food & chum.
The item cooked/created would allow you to cast/throw that item out onto the water, creating your own fishing pool. The pool created would be dependant upon the zone it was used on; common/low level food creating a pool that naturally occurs in that zone. Higher end recipes with the complex food & chum would create a rare fish pool, giving us anglers a unique fishing pool for a totally different fishing experience!

Thoughts & Ideas?

[El note: Sorry - this got eaten by the spam filter - I'm not sure why.]

This is my first post on the forums...let me just say that I love all the threads I have read so far and reading this forum gets me through my work day until I can get home to catch some cyber fish! Don't judge me.

I have leveled my main from 1-340 in a few days thanks to all the topics and I'm aiming for Grand Master Fisherman tonight!

I think that the variable casting area is a good thing personally. I would not like to see Blizz narrow it down at all. I WOULD like to see a few trinkets or upgrades that might help to narrow it down slightly, but I think the variation keeps the STV competition interesting.

I would like to see a few more dailies, two fishing dailies just isnt enough for me. It would be nice to have some things to improve the quality of the fishing experience after maxing out in levels, but I also would like to have to work for it.

Yes. No. Yes. I think all your arguments against that could be bypassed by using two sounds for the catch. One for when you catch something and one for everyone else.
When fishing in a group - typically in the Dalaran Sewers or for the WG fishing dailies, I often get confused when I have caught something.

I was probably unclear in my original post. This is what I meant -- my bobber has one sound, everyone else's has another.

And Cherel's reason (fishing in groups) is exactly why.

A stronger case can be made as I learned with my leveling 65 priest. I can do the cooking daily in Dalaran, Marcia Chase has a grey `!' over her head and I'm five levels away from being able to do the dailies in Shattrath, which I won't exactly care about in 5 levels.

I suspect they'll change this.

They also need to change the rules on eating food or using bandages. Why can skilled nurse lowbies make frostweave bandages they can use, but lowbie experienced cooks cannot eat their own delicacies?

(My priest has eaten up all the Golden Fish Sticks she caught and cooked herself in a corpse run across Terokkar at level 36 - good thing the bank has refrigeration)

I don't really want the bobber to change all that much (I'm mostly annoyed at large things on the screen like Mammoths and Dragons) and it would hurt fishing in the Dalaran fountain, which I like very much.

A fisherman's vest (the knd of thing with lots of pockets). The only Shirt item in the game to give any buffs. At each skill level the vest becomes obtainable via a series of tough quests or by doing a large number of dailies in OL and NR (maybe emblems for this). The vest has one socket at the lowest level (gem limited to a level too - which will help JCs sell those low value gems) and at the next fishing skill level it has 2 sockets and so on. Obtainable from the fishing trainers.
Level 450s who have done the Dal daily 100s of times have no fishing challenges now.
Drop the level 70 OL requirement to 60 too, at 70 the bycatch is worthless and players have abandoned OL in any case.

Is a distinctive sound worth more than a distinctive image? Or is the size of the bobber important - the fact it is so small means that sound becomes more important?
I think sound is hugely under-rated in WoW, precisely because "good sound" doesn't get noticed. It's a subtle thing that influences you without you actively being aware of it. Other people creating sound can break that: Like the train-set just before Alterac Valley starts. The only obvious example of sound being used to customize a character is Mekgineer's Chopper - the noise made by those bikes gets noticed. However, that still isn't true customization, because there is only one sound - it's just a rare sound that most characters don't have.
Traditionally it is not done in modern video games, because they use blocks of pre-recorded sound, which are difficult to manipulate (the Death Knight speech is an example of manipulation). However, games could play your computer like it were an instrument - rather than pre-recorded sounds, the computer plays a (musical) score. That opens up the possibilities for a lot more variations, because things like pitch can be altered by the program's code, rather than being pre-recorded by Blizzard. I wonder why we don't do that? Maybe sound programming requires a lot more processing power than I think it does?

Instead of making a customizable sound, they could use a different sound bite that's only client side, that only you hear when you're bobber catches something.

Agreed!

And I vote for faster fishing leveling. ~12 fish for a point is making me nuts! I wonder if I can get my fishing from 410 to 450 before Cataclysm arrives.

you can enchant your gloves +2 fishing.
lucky fishing hat +5 fishing (same as the weather beaten fishing hat)
and in the new patch you will be able to get the new boots +15 fishing.

How about making the +fishing gear more useful? If you have 450 fishing, there's no bonus in carrying anything more than a basic pole and the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat.

I would like to see a tackle box like a 15-18slot bag that would hold all your fishing items: fishing pole(s), Hooks, any gear that you gain from fishing dailies and/or contest.
It prolly a worthless idea but I would like to have a bag named "tackle box"

Another idea would be to make our Max fishing more accurate when there is a pool nearby
(Nothing is more frustrating than during the fishing tourney to have 10+ casts avoid the pool!).
Since fishing skill used to prevent you from fishing in certain waters I think this would be a nice change.

What about a second fishing style besides watching a bobber passively? Something that emulates active trolling with a lure. Different lures at different levels, or specific lures for specific fish.
