[Fishing] 3.0.8 Fish Drop Rates Changed?

  1. Akeo <Angler>, 3 years ago:

Fishing schools in Sholazar today for some crit food (Nettlefish) for a guildie...

Before the patch, every cast was a Nettlefish with the rare water or chest. Today, out of 63 casts (fished nodes only) I got 28 Nettlefish, 2 stacks of cloth, 6 leather scraps,1 eternal + 2 crystallized water, and 27 pygmy suckerfish.

While I appreciate the apparent buff to the suckerfish drop rate, this seems more than a bit excessive... anyone else have similar experiences?

Are you saying you caught a whole Eternal Water in one catch, or overall enough Crystallized Water to make an Eternal (with 2 over)?

The addition of Pygmy Suckerfish to all Northrend pools is known: About 2/3 of the catch now have a Suckerfish attached - less for Glassfin Minnow Schools.

I assume the change is intended to make Pygmy Suckerfish much, much easier to catch.

But I'm inclined to agree that high proportion is an over-reaction. There were issues before, when only open water gave Pygmy Suckerfish:

    • It often tipped the balance against pool fishing for profit, when historically the act of moving between pools has been more rewarding than standing still.
    • Pygmy Suckerfish were impossible to farm effectively.
    • Supply of fish was quite low overall, so prices were rather high, which tended to annoy Alchemists in the first few weeks - particularly as there was no efficient farming method.

But a modest (20%) Pygmy Suckerfish catch from pools would have addressed most of those problems.

i dunno about northrend fishing but im fishing in nagrand for the outland fishing daily. World's largest mudfish was a 100% drop before, now i've dropped about 25 lines, havent got it yet. I appreciate the need for a harder daily but i liked having that daily done in less than 5 minutes, and I can't even use the trash fish i get, who needs barbed gill trout?!

It was not an eternal, just enough crystallized to make one, lots of catches were 1 crystallized + 1 suckerfish, or just a suckerfish by itself. Sorry if that was a bit confusing.

I don't mind having the suckerfish finally fishable from pools, far from it, I've been needing pygmy oil for a while now... But every catch and a large portion of the catches just being a crystallized water and a Suckerfish instead of what I was trying to farm... Hoping to see if anyone else is having similar stats on catches before I make any bug report or complaint about it.

I could have swore Sculpin dropped in the same places Herrings did pre-patch. Am I wrong? I did find pools in BT though

I had sculpin drop for me fishing off the pier in unupe--was that happening before the patch?

Post patch, and I finally decided to do something about the 11 points I needed in cooking to get Fish Feast (it's awesome, by the by, and our Naxx raid team tonight loved it!).

Long story short, I've always saved my Pygmy Suckerfish, using them on my alchemist alt to make the oil, and storing that for use in making Guru Elixir or other such elixirs.

Went fishing for some Deep Sea Monsterbelly off the icebergs south of Unu'pe in Borean Tundra.

Within 1-2 fish, I got 60 Deep Sea Monsterbelly, 60 of another fish (name escapes me, it's used to make +SPI food for priests), and 100 Pygmy Suckerfish.

Drop rate slightly over 80%, for sure now I'm not going to be short of this oil, at last count I have 480 stored away >.<
