[Contests] 4th Fishing Extravaganza win with unskilled character.

I've never been one to brag about fishing, except to poke fun at fellow guild members. They dared me to post my recent win here, so here goes.

In the past year and a half, I've won the extravaganza on 3 different characters, all of which were 80 and 300+ base fishing skill. I'm on the backwater server: The Venture Co.

My fishing grounds are the east coast. I start as far north as possible and work my way to the south. I turn back north when I meet competition or run out of pools. I don't use potions or lures.

You want to know the real key (as has probably been stated here before): Always be 100% sure that your cast is in the pool. If not, recast.
    ====================================

So, I was going to help a guildie out sunday for the fishing tourney. Play a little defense on my warlock while spotting pools, competition, etc. Well, damn, he no shows.

On a lark, I had picked up a fishing pole and tried the ghostfish daily (and succeeded) a few days before. Thanks to the 3.3 changes, I was successful.

Lightbulb! Let's go for it. Fish on! I quickly set my hearth and off I went. I was an extremely sleepy STV this past sunday. I counted 3 80s on the alliance side. I was hoping for the same from the Horde. My fishing skill is... 27! I just made it to the north end of the east coast as the tourney starts...

I employed the same strategy as I note above. The only thing I really missed, was Find Fish! I managed to keep a pretty good pace. I didn't think i had it, due to catching 10 'crap' fish (blackmouth, stoneskin, etc). I even caught [Brownell's Blue Striped Racer]!

I managed to pull the 40th out around 20 minutes into the tourney. A quick hearth and WIN!

I'm sure there are doubters out there.
Feel free to check out my fishing achievements.
    My alts name is: Vett
on the US server: The Venture Co

I always thought the Stranglethorn tournament was fairly easy to win. I'm probably at 12 or 13 wins now, I'd have to go back and check gear on my alts to be sure. It is a nice little balance of luck and skill though. If you don't have knowledge of the pool locations and which are good/bad pools it is a tough one to win.

My first win back in the ol' "vanilla" days was on my 46 hunter. This was before they announced it to the zone. I got a lot of nasty whispers when I said in general chat I won. Well not much has changed. My last two wins, last week and the week before got a few nasty remarks. I believe I have just as much a right to gear my alts with the tournament fishing poles as anyone else. Over 4 years (?) the 12 or 13 wins really isn't that many. It is a pve server so everyone has about the same chance.

...and why would you win 12 or 13 tourneys? Exceptionally bad form imo. That's like everyone rolling need on raid loot when you don't ever plan on using the item. "I'm rolling NEED...its okay, I already have the loot, but I'd just like to win the roll anyway...No worries".

If I were your guild leader, I'd kick you out just for this. Crappy quality in a guild member imo.

I never won more than twice on one character. Only two have trinkets. I run more than one account so I have a lot of alts to get the pole with and I use them almost every day. All of my level 70+ alts (12 or so) complete the daily fishing in dalaran. I believe only two don't have the weather-beaten fishing hat. Up to 15 wins now I think.

10 character slots, so up to 20 wins on the same server is still giving the winner something they would use, and something no one else is any more entitled to.

After that, you could start making the argument (without being selfish or entitled yourself) that they are doing it in spite.

Honestly though, the hate tells will come on many servers no matter what, whether its your first char or not. 99% of people have no clue who someone else is, let alone alts.

If you are on one of these servers and the pink text rolls in, trying something like:
/DND You are a special snowflake, and the world owes you more than the next person
If even one of the haters then comprehends this, you have improved your server.

For the OP, given the pool changes to ignore skill, I don't know why you think anyone would doubt you. If your cast isn't in the pool, you recast regardless of skill.

LOL its really funny to see someone say its easy to win the contest Cuz the booty bay one is never won by the best man Just the one with the most guys killing everyone on the beach.

I just used your Strategy and walked away with the "Salty" title and a brand new Arcanite Fishing Pole. I had one or two people show up half way through, but even they weren't much of a bother. Can't believe I'm actually wearing this title right now, due to schedules I never thought I'd be able to win (since I can only participate a few times a year) I actually caught the Blue Stripe Racer and 10 crap fish as well, oddly enough. Mr. Pinchy was the last non-contest achievement I had, and I was saving it for when I really wanted to do some fishing. Well, ended up landing him this week, and getting the Contest and Pinchy within days of each other has been great.

Yeah, the contest is much easier on a PvE server. I've won it 7 times on PvE. Also never more than twice on a character. I'd say the average win time on my server is between 15 and 19 minutes.

As for fishing skill required, I think the skill to fish in the pools is lower than the skill to fish in Stranglethorn in general. I tried it today on a character with only like 120 fishing skill, no lure, and the only greys (fails) I caught were when I missed the pool. I'm sure it's posted somewhere on here what the exact skill requirement is.

Demongarlic, I couldn't disagree with you more.

I am on a PVP server, and I have won the BB contest twice. Both times that I won I had NO friends at all helping me.... just an experienced fisherman and his trusty pole. I attribute my wins to experience with a pinch of good luck (I know where the pools will most likely be, I have a good starting point and good plan, I know which pools to avoid, and I come well prepared).

I also think I would go for the contest win a third time on this character. Having both trinket slots filled with the Hook of the Master Angler would not give me a game advantage... but it would make me a happy fisherman!

*On a side tangent... who are we to say that winning the contest every week is "bad form"? As extreme anglers, I'm sure we can all relate to liking one aspect of this game (fishing) that may seem trivial to others. The thought to "back out gracefully and let some new people win the contest" sounds romantic and kind, but what about the people that enjoy the STV contest on Sundays more than most activities in WoW? I'm sure there are people out there that specifically pay $15 bucks a month to win this contest every Sunday. Now, I could see the argument if it truly was a contest of "who can have the most friends on the beach wreaking havoc".... but as a person that believes the STV contest is won through skill and preparation (on my server anyhow)... I believe that "the best man wins" rule says that a person can win the STV contest as often as they are able!

What the **** am I doing wrong? I have attempted, between both contests, about a dozen times now, and not once even came close to winning either!!! never caught a shark, and I dont get over 40 fish until 30/40 minutes...
I **always** ensure i am casting in a pool - if not recast, got that before i even tried to comete for STV or KFD I play on a PvE Server; Terenas - so it is not a matter of how many dead toons litter the beach.. I use potions, lures, water walking, remote pools as much as possible - and don't spend too much time running inbetween, that will also cost you a win.
    garsh.

I am wondering, asking, if one of the people who do win on a consistant basis, would you record it? Throw that up on youtube or something? I need to see what it is your doing differently from me... this is just getting to be bothersome now.
What is life with out a little Salt(y title)??

I don't doubt belgal -- as of this weekend, I'm at my 4th STV win, as well, and 3 of those wins were on toons with Fishing between 275-350.

My win this weekend -- 82 Rogue. I started at Fishing 1 at around 11am server, and was up to 275 Fishing by the time the contest started, and I walked away with a win. I stuck around afterward to get my Fishing up to 300 so I could at least use my new pole.

I do have to reiterate what belgal said about the pools, though -- if you have *any* doubt whatsoever that your lure isn't within range of a pool -- recast. There's nothing worse than hitting 39 Tastyfish when someone else wins, and then noticing that you've got a Yellowtail and Rockscale Cod sitting in your bag -- both of which come from open water.

I find it helpful to fish for about an hour before, to "warm up". The heights of different races (Tauren vs. Undead vs. Goblin, or on the Alliance side -- Draenei vs. Gnome) can affect where you think you should be standing in order to get near-perfect casts each time. After that hour, landing right on that sweet spot becomes a little more intuitive.
