I got my very last fishing achievement today, the STV Tournament win :) And it was only my second entry in the competition.
Over a month ago I entered the tournament and gave it my best shot. But I had no idea what I was doing. I had 32 fish when the winner was declared at 14:22. I knew I could do better.
So I read this website cover to cover, levelled a paladin to 62 on an alt account (was going to do it anyway, this was just one more good reason), gathered my 20 water walking potions from the fishing daily in Terokar, and spent 2 hours riding up and down the west coast of STV until I found all of the possible fishing nodes. I marked them all on my map, including the BROKEN ones that appear half in the land so I could skip them.
My brother and I both entered today and began at separate locations. After a bad start he decided he didn't have a chance so began scouting out pools for me (and pretended to fish in them to ward off other players). Even though we're on a pvp server there appears to be a general ceasefire between contestants, and most people aren't rude enough to fish in your pools if you're already there.
Caught my last fish at 14:18 and won the tournament 25 seconds later with a hearth to BB. In total I caught:
40 Tastyfish
3 stranglekelp
2 Firefin
2 Oily Blackmouth
1 stonescale eel
So in terms of trash drops, I was about on target (80% tastyfish). But at the end of the day, if you really want to win this thing you need every possible edge you can give yourself. Even if that means bribing a paladin guildmate for crusader aura. Don't forget you can use waterwalking potions even when mounted (without being dismounted).
