Something interesting though, the other hunter in my guild got one just minutes later, in a completely different spot. Is it just not very rare or is the random number generator just not very good? :P I assume it makes a random number based on the current time, so maybe that had something to do with it...

Are you sure that it wasn't because you had your Kalu'ak fishing pole equipped? It gives underwater breathing. Without the pole equipped I was still 'holding my breath' while underwater and had to resurface for air while on my sea turtle.

First post here but tought this is something i had to share about the turtle. I was just randomly thinking if blizz had learned from there mistake (refering to crocolisk in the city daily + old crafty). So i started ghostfish, my first plan was to just try it in the nettlefish but i didnt even get my small ghostfish yet so gave that idea up. After completing i went to the place near Warsong Hold. After just 8 musselback I got my turtle.
Ok you might say that was just lucky but so far it worked for another one of my guildies, dont expect mirracles but it can reduce you're time needed to spend fishing for the turtle.

And before anyone asks yes I tried it without the quest before I used it. Tried for like 5 hours and got nothing.
Best place for non-stop pool fishing i found is the Blue Sky Logging Ground.
I play on a pve server and this place is usually deserted with LOTS of pools and they will have respawned long before you complete a lap of the area.
Just steer clear of opposite faction NPCs, lest ye get flagged.
I chose to fish the lake just SW of Camp Winterhoof. There seem to be enough Herring pools there that there's always one or two up each circuit around the lake. I don't think I had more than a 15-20 gap between pools. I also got pretty lucky and got my turtle with only a couple of hours of fishing.

I got mine after @ 100 casts today, did 50 or so in HF, on Fangtooth schools until I fished up the Dark Herring. After that I moved up to Grizzly Hills to fish Glacial Salmon because they are more valuable for cooking/selling. I got it after @ another 50 casts.
I suppose I just had a great day fishing as I managed to get the Giant Sewer rat this morning doing the Daily.

As someone who has a Realm First, plans on getting the Salty title (because I procrastinate on it... >_>) and someone who just fished this up after 3 hours straight and several cans of soda later...
I can definitely say that the area, South-East of Borean Tundra, in the Frozen Sea, is the perfect place to fish this guy up.
The pools there constantly respawn, and unless a lot of your people are doing the daily or have the same idea you do... It's a nice quiet place lush with fishing nodes. Just circle around the area constantly fishing until you get it!
I only had Nat Pagle's Lucky Fishing Pole & Bright Baubles equipped (Along with maxed out fishing skill.)
So basically... if you can fish in it and catch fish with no problems... Then you'll be able to fish this guy up!

I got my turtle yesterday from Sholazar Basin. There are 2 big water areas there and on my server, one is usually pretty quiet. Unfortunately, the other is used for the fishing daily. Not totally sure how many catches it took me but it was probably close to 300.
Now I need to figure out where he will be most useful. It was fun to walk around Dalaran with him and Speedy at my side..haha
1500-ish and counting. Glacial salmon pools in the Blue Sky Logging Camp for the most part. Salmon market on Malfurion had the bottom drop out since the patch.
I found that, on the Terokkar server (pve), the best concentration of fishing pools is in venture bay, all over it. I caught over 100 Imperial Manta Rays in under 30 min. There was no one there except a couple of lvl 80 horde doing the pvp quests that are there. So long as you mind your own business and move quickly from pool to pool, you shouldn't have any problems with the other faction, unless you're on a pvp server. It's a great place that also got me enough fish to level my cooking from 400 to 420.
Got mine after hours of fishing multiple days. When i got demorlized and stop counting i was over 5k casts. was just toolin' around Sholazar for the fishing daily and stopped at one last node before I left and fished him up. I like fishing in Sholazar because I am also a miner and most people fly the circle of the zone for mining nodes leaving the nodes near the water (and vicariously the fish) to me.
I got my turtle about a week and a half after the patch that brought it hit. and i found that the best spot to fish for him (and where i got him) is in the river/lake that is underneath dalaran in crystalsong forest. its got quite a few spawn spots (i think around 10) and not once did i find a person fishing there, and that was on a high pop and a low population server.
When I caught my turtle i was just about to stop for the day but i fished 1 fish out of school and then it disappeared, so i decided that that didnt count and went onto the next school and boom there he was!
so my advice just fly straight down from dalaran

i was die'n a slow death fishing for this turtle. Finaly got it so I will share some info. Someone asked the question "does gear/skill make a diff?" i would have to say no not really. I assumed that too from day one when this thing came out. so i maxed gear at +57 did the hooks for +100 and did the drink for another 10... over 1500-2000 fish and no turtle. Had guildies get the turtle before me and i dont think they had max gear. It was all luck. i stopped using the +100 and just used my cap's +75 lure, and i stopped drinking... so i had 450+132= 582skill. (i hope my math is right...) kept fishing and got the turtle south of Unu'pe on cast ... 4k something...

Caught my turtle in the basin while fishing for the ghostfish. First ghostfish I caught that day from a pool vanished before I used it, so cleaned out another pool trying. On the next pool, on the same cast, I caught turtle, nettlefish, suckerfish, and the ghostfish. woot!

That was because you had the epic Kalu'ak fishing pole maybe. The mount itself doesn't give underwater breathing. Just caught it and tried. :p
Fished up my turtle about 2 months ago from a Nettlefish School in Sholazar Basin doing the Ghostfish Daily. I did a fair amount of fishing before hand but he's definitely inspired me to become a salty fishing meister :)
I honestly don't have time to read the whole thread, so that might have been posted before. Sorry in that case.
I have decided to get two achievements at the same time, so I went straight to Howling Fjord, to Winter Breath's Lake. There are many Fangtooth Herring pools in this lake and also there are 3 small rivers nearby where pools spawn at times too. Basically I just flew around the place while watching a movie and fishing. I believe I got lucky since it took me about two evenings of fishing to get the mount, and I also got 6 Dark Herring. Also I was alone there 95% of the time.
Though I heard about people getting lucky and catching the mount in shorter time, the rat from Dalaran sewers took me about 2 months to catch, so if you're still trying to fish up the mount and already got your rat and being angry on all those lucky (or patient) people who caught the turtle, just relax, forget about your goal and fish for profit or pleasure. I got the turtle when I was least expecting it.
Less than 50 casts to get Turtle!!! Just plucked her up tonight!
Grizz Hills, Blue Lake, was gonna farm salmon, but hey!
Now the rat took over 4k casts... who knew?
