Just tried it now, got Old Crafty on the 15th cast. Got a baby croc on every single cast, including the 15th. Looted Crafty first, then the croc, no problems.
[Fishing] Bug with old crafty?

Than I had just bad luck. <.<"
I had to leave yesterday, so I couldn't try any longer. I'll try again asap - but I'm just never so lucky with the stupid croc quest, maybe it will be weeks (again) before I get the quest the next time.- Character: Alaylith (EU-Kargath-A).

How to fish up Crafty and being able to loot it.
If you use the bug with Crocolisks in the City you will eventually catch both the Croc and Old Crafty. How to get them both (Do all this when the confirmation box of looting Crafty is opened, assuming you use auto-loot):
Loot the Croc, then delete it from your inventory.
When done that, accept the BoP looting of Old Crafty. Now you have both items in your inventory. If you try to loot Crafty before taking the Croc it says it can not loot the item.

If you try to loot Crafty before taking the Croc it says it can not loot the item.Actually, I found it to be the exact opposite for me.
If I looted Crafty first, then the croc, I could loot both.
If I looted the croc first, then tried to loot Crafty, it gives an error.I manually click to loot, so perhaps it's something with autoloot that bugs it out as described in the quote above.

Ok so I keep hearing a rumor about a Northrend quest that you can do that lets you go to the Horde cities without getting a beat down. Is that true?
That would make old crafty a lot easier to get if I didn't have to worry about sneaking in. I saw a screen cap of a orc in stormwind so I think it might be true. (On wowinsider) But I can't seem to find the quest starting point. Anyone else know of this?
Let me know.

Yes, there is a chain quest in Dragonblight that takes you to a raid on Orgrimmar. The quest will port you there. After the quest you can ignore the port back and go fishing without being tagged pvp.
I think the quest line (which I am just starting) is 72+

Happened to me in Orgrimmar just this weekend past. Caught Crafty and a Croc first cast, but was unable to loot Crafty, although it did let me loot the croc. I put in a GM ticket to see whether they knew about the bug, and whether the "no looting" was a hot fix, and decided to keep fishing in Orgrimmar whilst I waited for the GM's whisper [it was already late, and i too tired to successfully quest while waiting, but fishing was do-able]. Imagine my surprise when, with the Croc in my bags, I finally see a legitimate Crafty pop up half-an-hour later!
The GM response, by the way, is that they know about the bug; the "no looting" is not a hotfix, but an inexplicable bug; and that despite my getting the achievement a half hour before getting a Crafty in my bags, they could not prove that I had caught him, so would not be able to supply a Crafty for the one that failed to loot [I'd got him legitimately, 'though, and did not want a replacement].
Phew!

Confirming that today this little bug is still working. After around 10 catches i got Crafty and the Baby Crocolisk. Had auto-loot off, and manually looted crafty first, then the quest item, worked fine :)

OK, I think I have a working theory.
I first took Fate, Up Against Your Will to get a cheap and easy way into Org, and then waited out the dailies until Crocolisks in the City came up. I took that as well.
At first I tried to do it in no group and with auto-loot on, but I kept getting the babies on the first pulls. I'd have to throw them away.
Second try, I joined a raid and turned off auto loot. After 6 pulls I had him.
Third try I left the raid, kept auto loot off. 9 more pulls and they both appeared. Old Crafty #2 and a Baby Crocolisk. Then I got a third, also when he appeared along with another Baby Crocolisk. Finally I tried about 30 pulls with the Baby Crocolisk <b>in my inventory</b>: Nothing. After that I got tired of catching him, finished my quests.
The devs have made the cryptic statement:
This is not a bug, nor do I think this is working as you think.
(Maaven)Conclusion? Old Crafty likes to eat Baby Crocolisks! When you catch one on your line it becomes bait for him. 3 catches in < 30 pulls is well beyond the margin for error, the experiment is both reproducible and capable of being validated by changing the parameters: You cannot catch a second Baby Crocolisk, so you won't catch Crafty, at least not at the increased drop rate.
As for being in the raid and catching him alone: Well, my theory is that being in a raid doesn't stop you from catching the Baby Crocolisk. It just stops it from appearing in your loot window, much like the Weather-Beaten Journal is invisible to you in a container if you already know Find Fish. I remember there was a time (I do not know if it is still possible) when people would sell "empty" trunks in trade channel. They knew there was an invisible journal in there because it would not disappear even after they'd removed all visible contents. Because they already knew Find Fish, they knew it had to be the Journal. I think Crafty's chasing the Baby Crocolisk which is only invisible because you're in a raid and cannot pick up quest items, just like the Weather-Beaten Journal.

I certainly know the pains of trying to catch old crafty. Ever since I saw the salty achievement I wanted it. That is why I started to raise my fishing. I went out to Orgrimmar to go get the stupid fish, after getting Old Ironjaw after a mere hour of fishing in Ironforge, and started fishing in that cleverly hidden little alcove of rocks near the waterfall in the valley of honor. 3 hours later I was no longer excited, also more than a little anxious to get out because my fishing skill had hit max and i needed more training. But i perservered, and no more than 10 minutes after I left the alcove and went to the lake outside it, I caught the stupid thing. Now I have both but I am also wondering, can Old Crafty not be caught in the alcove???

I have more information, though this relates to Old Ironjaw. I just got back from Ironforge, where I fished in the pool in the Forlorn Cavern for an hour. I still had the Crocolisks in the City quest in my log, still had no Baby Crocolisk in my inventory. I was not in a raid at the time. Autoloot was off the whole time.
I managed to catch that Baby Crocolisk 26 times in the Forlorn Cavern pool. Sometimes I looted it and then threw it away, sometimes I just didn't loot it at all. Either way, not once did Old Ironjaw appear with him. I think it's safe to say that the Baby Crocolisk does not increase the odds of Old Ironjaw appearing in your catch. Perhaps Old Ironjaw doesn't share the taste for Baby Crocolisks that Old Crafty does?
Given the ridiculously low drop rate of Old Ironjaw (1%? 0.1%?) it's obviously impossible to determine if the presence of a Baby Crocolisk in the catch or Crocolisks in the City in the quest log has a negative effect on the catch rate, since the difference 0.2% or 0.1%, and 0% would only be distinguishable over a span of a couple thousand or more catches.
Point is, however, 0/26 catches later, Old Ironjaw's absence can conclusively debunk the suggestion that the Crocolisks in the City trick works for Old Ironjaw.

I will try using the Crocolisks in the City trick to catch him under the Waterfall tonight. I've still got Fate, Up Against Your Will so it shouldn't be too difficult.

As far as I know, WotLK first introduced spells (buffs, abilities) that change loot probability. We see it in the Dalaran fountain.
This means that it is technically possible for Blizzard to alter the chance of a drop by "casting a spell". Passive spells are not seen by the player. It follows that any drop chance can now be linked to some other criteria. Perhaps having "Crocolisks in the City" on your quest log?
Generally Blizzard do not write in effects that players have no reasonable way of discovering... Although it could be argued that the variation of certain fish by time of day was unlikely to be apparent to players. Nor the need to emote at chickens to trigger quests. And counter-argued that Blizzard did not repeat that in TBC or (as far as we can tell) WotLK.
Of course it makes no sense to turn a ~1/1000 catch rate into a ~1/10 catch rate for a fish that is:
- Not related to the daily quest.
- Has its rarity enshrined in an achievement, so logically should remain non-trivial.
- Is one of a pair, each with a faction-specific bias, where the change is not applied to the other fish in the pair, thus creating a faction bias.
Even if we have misunderstood the trigger, the final 2 points still stand.
All of which makes Maaven's comment that "this is not a bug", curious.
I could accept "this is not the bug" - because there clearly is a higher-level bug causing the single-catch daily quest fish to caught on the first catch. That bug was eventually fixed on the 3.0.8 Public Test Realm. But "this is not a bug" implies "this is intended". As outlined above, it would be technically possible, but not rational design.

That's not an unreasonable argument, that this could still be a bug. In a world where every Zune on earth commits mass-suicide on December 31, 2008 I could certainly imagine someone typing
x *= 100in the wrong place.I think we may be able to learn more once 3.0.8 comes out (<shock>that it's not out yet</shock>) but since you've clearly been on 3.0.8, can you tell us, el, if the catch rate is still artificially high for Old Crafty accompanying Baby Crocolisks on the PTR? I don't imagine it'd be terribly difficult to stay alive in Orgrimmar on a low-pop PTR, and there's always the waterfall.
Still, Maaven's comment just seems too cute... And this is also a world where if you're starving and under attack by an Iron Golem you can polymorph into a Rust Monster and solve both problems, and wearing a ring of slow digestion stops you from being killed by the Purple Worm that just engulfed you: I cannot discount the possibility they're being cute.

Saw this post, on Auchindoun Crocs in the City is today's daily. Went for Old Crafty in IF. No difference. Still no old crafty.
Anyone reporting an increased droprate is incredibly lucky. Maybe there was a bug at one point, but it is fixed now.

Quick sample on the current PTR, with the Crocs quest, in Orgrimmar, as Alliance: 60 catches, of which 6 also fished up a Baby Crocolisk (I threw the quest fish back in immediately). Zero Old Crafty catches. That's not entirely conclusive, but it looks like the quest is not giving "free" Old Crafties in 3.0.8.

Just got the Crocolisk quest, headed to Ogr. and was in the Valley of the Spirits
Fished maybe 15 minutes, here's my catches (no raid, no auto loot):
Longjaw Mud Snapper 18 : 28.1%
Bristle Whisker Catfish 8 : 12.5%
Brilliant Smallfish 6 : 9.4%
Baby Crocolisk 20 : 46.9%
17 Pound Catfish 1: 1.6%
Old Crafty 1: 1.6%
I looted no fish, but the tracker still marks it even if it's not looted. So if the quest thing is changed in the PTR, then I'd say people better get the quest quick before this method is no longer working. Worked for me, I'm ecstatic!
