[Fishing] Cata fishing

  1. Thought I'd exploit the same bug as Idoru and investigate the Crate of Tasty Meat. Every time I received 2-5 of a random meat and 1 junk item. Again, nothing out of the ordinary for me. Perhaps you can get the rare recipes like Cake, etc but I already have these so don't know.

    Meat
    Basilisk Liver
    Blood Shrimp *
    Crocolisk Tail
    Delicate Serpent Wing
    Dragon Flank x1
    Giant Turtle Tongue
    Monstrous Claw
    Snake Eye
    Toughened Flesh

    * has flavour text "These clever little devils burrow into Abyssal Clams and devour them from the inside."

    Junk
    47" Tapeworm
    Cracked Carrion Bird Beak
    Crusty Chicken Foot
    Large Rat Carcass
    Motorised Bone Saw
    Rusty Butcher's Knife
    Shriveled Boar Eye
Tangled Tuft of Wolf Hair (2-4)

    Shipwreck Debris in Tol Barad

Also found Fathomeel Schools along the coast.

Non-school catches so far are Murglesnout, Deepsea Sagefish and Voltile Water.

Will check inland once the fighting is over.

Found 2 debris spawns so far, only one catch from each.

    First had 2 Volatile Vater.
Second had a Sealed Crate containing 1G 95S 87C, 4 Obsidium Ore, 4 Massive Turkey Legs (92307 health over 30s), 3 Rumsey Rum and 1 mythical Mana Potion.

  3. Excellent news about the debris. I'm so glad they contain more than just ore and cloth like the Wrath and BC ones too. Chances of something unusual, not necessarily valuable, makes them worth fishing for.

  4. Idoru <Investigator>, 2 years ago:

found 7 more pools of debris before a bug ported me to the battlefield evem though I pressed cancel.

    3 - Sealed Crate: 1G 55S, 8x Embersilk Cloth, Flask of Port
    4 - 1x Volatile Water
    5 - 1x Azshara's Veil, 2x Volatile Water (First time I had 2 catches)
    6 - 1x Azshara's Veil
    7 - Sealed Crate: 1G 57S 36C, 6x Obsidium Ore, 3x Buttery Wheat Roll (92307 Health food)
    8 - Sealed Crate: 1G 73S 56C, 11x Embersilk Cloth, 6x Highland Sheep Chease (92307 Health food) Sealed Crate #2: 1G 56S 9C, 11x Embersilk Cloth, 2x Highlandsheep Cheese, Jug of Burbon
    9 - 3x Volatile Water (1 + 2)

So far 3 pools had 2 catches, the rest only 1.

    Edit:
Looks like the no-junk skill is higher in Tol Barad, so far 8 of 25 open water catches have been junk with 525 + 40 skill.

  5. Idoru <Investigator>, 2 years ago:

    Tol Barad open water fishing

    50 catches, 525 + 40 skill
    Murglesnout: 21
    Deepsea Sagefish: 9
    Algaefin Rockfish: 2
    Volatile Water: 2
    Junk: 16

    50 catches, 525 + 140 skill
    Murglesnout: 25
    Deepsea Sagefish: 17
    Algaefin Rockfish: 3
    Volatile Water: 4
    Junk: 1

Water is still too shallow in the swamp area of the battlefield.

Shipwreck Debris and Fathom Eel Swarms share spawn points, so after fishing the first 9 I had to clear some swarms to spawn more.

    10 - Sealed Crate: 1G 98S 90C, 7x Elementium Ore, 6x Highland Pomegranate (92307 Health food), 3x Jug of Bourbon
11 - Sealed Crate: 1G 84S 77C, 5x Obsidium Ore, 3 Highland Spring Water, Rumsey Rum Black Label
    12 - Sealed Crate: 1G 68S 70C, 6x Obsidium Ore, 5x Highland Spring Water
    13 - Sealed Crate: 1G 98S 32C, 4x Obsidium Ore, 5x Azshara's Veil, 6x Highland Pomegranate

By the way, is the fish tracking skill gone ?

  7. Nope, still there.

There's an unnamed lake that borders Elwynn Forest, Redridge Mountains and the Burning Steppes. If you fish in the Burning Steppes part you get lava catches, old skulls, coal, etc. Wonder if they'll fix that before live.

In the Eastern Kingdoms the spread of fishing schools follows that of Kalimdor. Lowest level areas have none, next step up has Sagefish Schools inland, and higher level zones have Greater Sagefish schools. Coastal pools also same (Firefin, Blackmouth, etc), including Westfall.

  8. Idoru <Investigator>, 2 years ago:

After fishing 30+ pools of Shipwreck Debris the content of the Sealed Crate seems to be:

    Guaranteed:
    1.5 - 2G
A number of crafting materials (ores, herbs, leather, cloth), so far I've had from 4 up to 11.

    Random:
    Food or water
    Alchohol
    Potions

There can be 1, 2 or 3 of the randoms in every crate, although the potions seem rarer. Only had 2 crates contain a potion, 1 Mythical Mana and 1 Mythical Healing.

Crate #13 was the only one that had 2 different kinds af crafting materials,

The pools share location with the Fathom Eel Swarms.
They contain 1 or 2 catches, which can be Volatile Water, Azshara's Veil or a Sealed Crate.

Rare items may exist both in pools and crates, but we'll probably need a lot more catches before we see them.

And, Elixir of Water Walking makes it a lot easier to fish the pools, the mobs along the coast are a real pain.

  9. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 2 years ago:

Idoru - Good work, as always. You mentionned leather coming from Sealed Crates in your summary, but I did not see this in any of the samples. Can remember what the item(s) were called?

Hoddie - The default zone catch for the Burning Steppes was lava. Any unnamed fishable area in the zone will normally adopt the default catch. That's likely why you are seeing lava catches from water, and why there is no consistency between areas of the same lake that are zoned differently.

I'm guessing Tol Barad require 675 skill to fish without junk, which would make it the hardest water in Cataclysm. I've also guessed 575 for Vashj'ir. But both of those would benefit from more samples at a range of fishing skills. Vashj'ir fishing is clearly in a mess at the moment, so might be worth waiting a build or 2.

Comments about the general pattern of catches in Old (pre-Cataclysm) Azeroth are useful. However we will ultimately need a definitive list of what is available in each zone - zone by zone: Pools should be reasonably straightforward, but it may be too early, because I suspect we're looking at a lot of placeholders. Somewhat harder is a full audit of open water catches. Most important is to establish the typical catch for each zone, for both inland and coastal open water. Only later move on to identify any specific places within zones which are different. The best way to identify a typical zone catch is to fish in a part of the zone that has no specific name - shows the zone name only - but those places aren't so common in Cataclysm. Fish for maybe 20 or 25 catches, and try and relate the catch to the Gazetteer zone groups. So far, everything reported has matched those old groups, but it is highly likely that the groups will be assigned to new zones. 20-25 catches should be enough to get a match - it depends how good you get at knowing the patterns. Always be alert to the possibility of an entirely new pattern. Checking all the old zones is a huge task, but hopefully different people here will be able to do a small part, and collectively provide a complete picture.

Heavy Savage Leather. It seems a bit rarer, only had 3 crates contain it, but that's most likely due to the still low number of crates.

    Update on the contents:

Just had 2 crates in a row only contain coins and 1 other item.
One had only 9x Embersilk Cloth, the other just 3x Volatile Water.

    Rough map of pool locations

  11. Idoru <Investigator>, 2 years ago:

The Naga in Twilight Highlands now drop Abyssal Clams.

Just looted 2, and both contained a Blood Shrimp.

  12. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 2 years ago:

So Abyssal Clam are a mob drop, contained in the non-fishy Crate of Tasty Meat, removed from the fish-based feast recipe, and not yet found in any water. Yet they are still part of The Oceanographer achievement...

  13. Idoru <Investigator>, 2 years ago:

At least looting one counts towards the achievement :)

  14. Torture <Salty>, 2 years ago:

They still may be fished up, take the Darkwater Clams for example, they are both fishing drops and world drops, then their is Giant Darkwater Clam only gotten from fishing and Brooding Darkwater Clam only a world drop. Each of the three give Succulent Clam Meat so Blizzard may do something like this again for Cataclysm, may be too soon to speculate on this 100%.

  15. Idoru <Investigator>, 2 years ago:

The Naga and Murlocs in Vashj'ir also drop Abyssal Clams now.

So far every one has contained 1 Blood Shrimp.

Fish tracking is still in, but characters copied to the beta more than two weeks ago lost it upon copying and have to find a new weather-beaten journal to learn it again.

The character I copied about two weeks ago retained her "Find Fish" ability; My other characters made a trip to zangarmarsh looking for Steam Pump Flotsam "schools" and fishing for crates in those (they are easy to recognize at a distance even without find fish active, and have fair chance for crates that in turn may have a fair chance for the journal)

Well I went to SV, got the book from the first catch on a debris pool (got 7 others crates, no fish from this same pool, so I think some bugs remains)

I noticed that waters around Karazhan still have PH fish pools, I wonder if they'll change the fishing pattern in this area...

By the way, I don't if this has already been reported, but for the Stormwind cooking daily quest "Fisherman's Feast", the giant catfish can be fished from Stormwind Lake, it's an alernative to stealing them from Stormwind fishermen.

Interesting analysis here of the "working overtime" guild perk (+10% chance to increase tradeskill gains):

    http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=27387362663&sid=2000

Question is: Does it influence fishing skill-ups? While the individual catch-per-skill-up numbers (see Cataclysm Fishing) are already somewhat random, it should be fairly easy to see a 10% increase from the overall total. Unfortunately it requires someone with access to this guild perk, who has not already leveled up fishing.

  19. Torture <Salty>, 2 years ago:

El, I can confirm this, I brought over another copy of Torture with only 450 hard skill and instead of it taking 10 catches to gain a skill-up it now only takes 9 having the guild perk. I saw that you have noted that it takes only 9 per skill-up in beta however for me it has been 10 per without having the perk.

  20. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 2 years ago:

Thanks Torture. I've updated the table.
