As I read through the postings on this forum I can't help but be impressed by the dedication of some anglers, often requiring 1000 or more catches to get a rare fish. I'm just wondering when fishing for a rare fish whether you do the bulk of the fishing in one session or if it's broken up into many shorter sessions. I can generally only play for about a hour at a time - does that put me a disadvantage for catching the rare fish (if the catches are random it shouldn't).

No, not really. It's all RNG based, so, it doesn't matter if you fish one hour for four days or four hours for one day.
I like to have things done as fastest as possible, so, whenever I have time, I just do what I need. So, I prefer one big session to many shorter ones. There are certainly people, who had longer session, but my longest was 6 hours session for Old Crafty (still needed 2 hours next day, though).

Longest session was the final stretch for Old Ironjaw, 11 hours straight on a Friday night (since Saturday my wife wakes up with the kid, so I get to sleep in). Got him on the 2207th cast.
Edit: that was Ironjaw, not Crafty...Crafty only took a mere 1200 casts.

It should make no difference at all... and your less likely to be considered a crazy fisherman in the meanwhile. :)
