are we sure this fish exists, and can be pulled from "fangtooth herring pools" AND open water within Howling fjord?
Ive been fishing both pools and open water for days now with 0 results. 1400 + casts...
Or am i just unlucky? =( last achievement i need for Salty...
this fish DOES exist, it is just very rare, if you look elsewhere in this forum you will find other who have caught the dark herring (which is in fact a lvl 78 dagger fish)
the acheivement is just that of VERY rare fish so could take a long time

I caught it in open water using a lure (had 450 fishing skill already but figured hedging my casts would be good idea)

im now fishing exactly where u did.
As a point of interest i did speak to a GM about the fish and he confirmed for me that the droprate is the SAME throughout the zone regardless of open water or pool.

DARK HERRING IS FINALLY MINE. Sorry, been fishing for it for a full night/day now and was a little excited to see it pop up. Fished it out of the lake southwest of camp winterhoof - mix of pool and open water fishing, but I caught it out of a herring pool. Good luck to those gunning for this baby.

I was fishing in Valgarde (mostly in open water; fishing in schools only when they spawned next to me), and he was my 266th catch/250th cast (not including the less than 5 "Your fish got away!"s). I fished him from a Fangtooth Herring school. Fishing skill is maxed at 450 (and +20 from my pole), and I was not using lures.
The catch breakdown is as follows:
Bonescale Snapper - 108 (40%)
Fangtooth Herring - 95 (35%)
Glacial Salmon - 39 (14%)
Pygmy Suckerfish - 16 (5%)
Crystallized Water - 5 (1%)
Reinforced Crate - 2 (<1%)
Dark Herring - 1 (<1%)
It technically took 250 casts, as the Pygmy Suckerfish is looted alongside other fish.

These numbers look very similar to mine, minus the Dark Herring. I've been fishing right around the fishing trainer.

Just a few minutes ago (around 9:15 CST 11/19/08) I pulled a Dark Herring out of a herring pool right off the pier in Valgarde. Looking at some of the other posts, it seems that I lucked out, as I got it after about two hours of solid fishing (sorry, no hard numbers, as I haven't picked up the fishing addon). Hopefully I'll do as well with the sewer rat - going after Old Crafty nearly made me lose my mind. *Chuckles*

Caught today (completing my Accomplished Angler achievement) from a herring school in Howling Fjord - took 367 casts in total.

Caught mine today, I didnt keep an accurate count, but guessing from number of stacks I've sold, I'd guess about 3000 casts. I spent all day yesterday not fishing in pools, I switched to pool fishing today, and caught it after about 100 casts. The previous week, I did mostly pool fishing though.
Stick to the pools, several people reporting what looks to be a 1% drop rate. Not statistically significant I know, but still, go with the trends.
I went out today for the first time to try to catch it, and took me just over 100 casts.
I spent 1500 casts in pools.
Time to switch to open water for awhile. The suckerfishes are also handy, and they come out of the pools.
I've been using a combination of pool and open water fishing with no luck yet. Here's my rough catch data so far, based on the fish I have laying around.
Reading these "caught in 100" or "caught in 300" posts is starting to get depressing. Not that I'm not happy for those that have. I must've used up all my fishing mojo when I caught Ironjaw and Crafty relatively quickly.

I totally understand. I caught the Dark Herring in 250 casts (and Crafty and Ironjaw), but I'm paying for it now with the Giant Sewer Rat. Up to 5700 casts now. Ugh.
Achievements page reads 9200~ casted, no herring yet...
All open water fishing beside Valgarde.
Sigh...
Dont worry im sitting at nearly 8000 cast and no Herring but well over 6k gold from selling the fish =P
Up to 4300 here, still no fish. Can someone confirm a catch since last week? I'm starting to think they tweaked the drop rate significantly.
After giving up on the 15 pound snapper 3500 cast in pre-wrath Ive started here.. I am betting on the pools, as they seem to have higher drop rates in general for offhands and other goodies. aka enormous feltails, as well as only herrings. Open water feels sounds like crystal lake all over again. I will let you all know how it turns out. Some of the sucesses in this thread seem promising.
