[Fishing] Dark Herring Bug

    I just got mine in Winter's Breath Lake. Took me 121 cast to get it. Seems as if its bugged like most of the rare fishing quest now. Got my turtle in 15 cast.

    I lost the exact number when wow crashed on me, but I'm closing in on 600 casts in fangtooth herring schools with no rare fish yet.

    Got three in about 230 casts, first one after 7 casts. Was fishing at Cauldros Isle, only from pools. If you are only fisherman there, it's worth to give it a try, you can catch both Dark Herring and Turtle and there is usually at least one pool up everytime.

    Yeah yesterday was herring day, no question. I got another one, got one on my alt in ~20 catches, and several people in my guild got one. I haven't been out to check today, but I'll be headed back there to check on that and try for the turtle :-)

    Edit: 24 casts, 2 dark herring, I'm guessing it's still bugged :-)

    As I've started my hunt for turtle 3days ago by fishing in the Fjord I must be: incredibly unlucky or just playing on a server that didn't get this "bug" (tho I highly doubt that)
    I've caught near 1k fishes atm from herring schools (yes I don't freak out and only fish an hr or 2 /day) and I have yet to see the first "Dark" herring thats seeking my life.

    I suspect finagle, or murphy's law is involved here? (not sure which one tbh :-) )

    I don't know. I actually went back to for a few casts, and got another dark herring on my first pool, last cast on it. I'm still way below 100 casts on herring pools since 3.1, so that's 3 dark herrings at 3/100=3% drop rate for me personally. I used to farm for this guy for salty and gave up (still have over 1500 herrings in back storage from back when). But it's hard to tell. Even with a 3% drop rate you can be incredibly unlucky and get nothing in 1000 casts, though it's insanely unlucky. On the other hand getting 3 in 100 for a 1/1000 is insanely lucky!

    I wonder if this may be an artefact of what Jeff Kaplan described at GCD this year re quest item drops. There is a progressive increase of drop chances for quest items. Maybe that does kick in for these rare fishes/achievements too? Given that I have done some 7k casts for the rare fish and got it, maybe I'm just far into the progression and now get loads? Total off the wall theory though, because I assumed that this progressive luck thing only worked for quest items and not for stuff that seems to be like world drops.

    I fished up a dark herring 5 minutes into my second lure after 3.1, 15 minutes of fishing total. I've spent a lot of time trying to get the Herring in the past though, so glitch or not I've earned it. It is worth taking a look at though, as it's unlikely that we were all so lucky.

    My Deathknight (264 skill) caught this on her first cast into a pool in Howling Fjord. This was also her first cast ever into a pool of fish. My mage was slightly less lucky, but still fished one up in ~80 casts.

    Also several people I told about it also fished one up in less than 100 casts. I then decided to try my luck with Mr. Pinchy and his magical crawdad box. I was well over 2,000 casts, and no luck before. I fished one up in 9 casts, and got the pet on my first wish.

    Do any of you know of things like this happening in the past? (Broken drop rates that is) Will they fix it so that it doesn't happen in the future, or take the Dark herring out of the "The one that didn't get away". Sure I fished it up in 3.1, but I've been working on herring pools for awhile now. I would hate to have them remove the Dark Herring from the list, and our achievements along with it- especially when it wasn't our mistake..

    My friend did 800 casts in pools yesterday, he got 7 Dark Herrings. I guess the drop rate is something like 1:100, as there are people with less than 100 casts per DH and people with more than that. However, I haven't done the maths and even then, the sample is still not that great. Add the fact that people who got it quickly are much more likely to post it here, than the others and so the results would be inaccurate.

    i thought i was the only one with the luck like this, ive caught 8 dark herrings in the last 30 hours fishing but no luck on my turtle, but hey atleast the healers in the guild wont be going short of buff food for ulduar

    For what it's worth, I started fishing the pools at Winter's Breath Lake 3 days ago and I had about 500 catches of fish and other assorted items before I finally caught my dark herring. Still no mount...but this is an awesome place to fish, so the grind will be a little easier to take than unfriendly (and unpretty) Orgimmar. No mobs, and (so far) no other people. It's a great looking place, too. It reminds me of some of the alpine lakes here in Washington state...well, except for the frozen Ice Maiden in the middle of the lake. That, and catching herring. ;)

    And speaking of herring, that little bugger had better stop threatening me or I'm going to use him for turtle mount bait. My class can't wield daggers, and he'll just take up a bank slot if I don't put him to good use. ;)

    When I was fishing up my Sea Turtle in Howling Fjord, I caught 4 dark herring in two days. I probably have a total of over 7k catches in Northrend, and fished for a rare for weeks for my Salty title, to no avail. I finally caught my rare in Goldshire, instead. So yeah. I'm thinking bug. ;)

    Just another data point for 3.1.1: Tonight, April 24th, just after midnight server, I got my Dark Herring from Cauldros Isle after 26 casts.

    And I'm NEVER lucky with any drop rates, so, this is probably either a bug or a severe nerf.

    Just something to note, a Guidly caught the 15 pound mudsnapper in about 30 casts last night, so it just may be that all of the 'one that didn't get away' fish had their drop rate DRASTICALLY lowered

    I think it's definitely bugged. I just got it on my very first cast in a herring pool since 3.1. I did it at Fort Wildervar.

    I have to say that it doesnt seem bugged what so ever on my server Dawnbringer. I was wondering if only really lucky people were posting on this thread. Although multiple catches of it seem to idicate a bug I am not reaping any benefits in my corner of the world.
