[Fishing] Dark Herring: Pools vs. Open Water

Anyone care to comment on this subject or provide some useful statistics? I've been reading lots about this particular fish from a number of different sites and its hard to decipher if there is a clear advantage to Fangtooth herring pools vs. casting in open water (in Howling Fjord).

After about 2200 casts, both in pools and open water (mostly in open water) I'm beginning to wonder if it's pure luck that I see many posts claiming to catch a Dark Herring in a pool rather quickly, or if there is more too it and the chances of catching one is better in the pools than just casting in open water.

    Thanks for any info.

Well i caught the dark herring after 20 minutes of fishing the other day, all in pools, and last night a friend caught it in a pool after getting just 6 stacks of fangtooth herring, but we could have just been lucky.

That's bizarre, I just must be one of those people with bad luck. I've spent many hours fishing just the pools and haven't had any luck yet. Thanks!

There is speculation that the Dark Herring is a rare spawn of the Fangtooth Herring...so, while possible to catch the Dark Herring in open water, it may be more common in pools since the chance of catching a regular Fangtooth Herring is so much greater.

Yes, that was essentially the conclusion I came to too, but there is no concrete proof to prove this as far as I know. I've asked a GM about it and of course they aren't allowed to reveal that kind of information so at this point it's all really speculation.

I guess I should contribute my own first hand experiences from a few minutes before.
Beware! Reading this can be frustrating for someone who has been hunting the elusive Dark Herring for days.

I had been fishing the pools in the lake at Fort Wildervar for about an hour with no success. So I decided to do some stuff with an alt. Logging back in for another round of fishing I caught the Dark Herring on the first cast. Resisting the urge to dance and hearth back to Dalaran I decided not to waste almost 10 minutes left on my bait timer and continued fishing.
With the result of catching another two Dark Herrings at the second and fifth pool around the lake.
Now I'm somewhere between puzzled and freaked out.

I don't believe that multiplied probabilities are responible for such a "lucky" streak. Maybe the game mechanics insert the rare spawns into the pools at a specific time? And the composition of each pool is predetermined at its spawn?

Anyway ... since nobody will believe me, I will send some screenshots to el for close examination :-)
