I've been working on this guy, too. Spent hours at every known location (around 1500 catches) and after reading about the guy who caught it twice in the exact same place in Ashenvale i got to thinking, what if its technically registered as junk and easier to catch at a lower fishing level?

  3. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 3 months ago:

I doubt anything valuable will ever be regarded as junk, because there is no way to lower fishing skill once you have gained it - you can't even unlearn fishing skill and start again. So it would penalize anglers that spend time gaining skill, which is already of minimal use.

  4. Sattiva <Salty>, 3 months ago:

Ok, maybe not as junk, but when you look at it its clearly not as good as the later poles, what are the odds of that guy catching 2 within 100 casts? Unless he was lying, but no idea why he would. I'm gonna try fishing with a new char in RR and see what turns up.

  5. DokBrown <Salty>, 3 months ago:

I think the odds are really terribly small that he caught two poles in 100 casts, but it's not any more far fetched than the guy who caught Mr. Pinchy twice in the same pool.

It sucks, but you're just gonna have to keep trying to fish it up if you want it. I wouldn't bother starting a new character because I doubt you'd have better odds, but you're more than welcome to. At least it isn't soulbound, so you'd be able to transfer it to your main.

  6. Enarka <Salty>, 2 months ago:

Fish caught in Sun Rock Retreat : solidly well over 3000 casts.

I found a Darkwood Fishing Pole just today, trying for my Bloated Catfish!

It may be found in Sun Rock Retreat, as can it be in Redrige (I found my first one there).

Fish on, ladies and gentlemen. FISH ON!

I demand that Darkwood Fishing Pole be added to the forum aquarium. :)

As rare as this item is, and compared to the (current, patch 3.3.3) "rarity" of Mr. Pinchy, I would second that!

  9. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 2 months ago:

The forum aquarium is intended to be "achievable", and not merely a huge grind. I don't want it to feel like Insane in the Membrane. That's a particular problem for ultra-rare, but not terribly useful catches. And arguably there are a few catches that aren't terribly achievable already (like the 2/5 Rings).

So, the Darkwood Fishing Pole is a tough call. It is now the rarest fishing pole. But it only offers +15 skill. So there's no reason to fish for it, except to be able to say you've caught it.

    <grin>

You know, I made that comment above more "off the cuff" than anything else :-) And, of course, never expected or looked for insight as to why it is or isn't there - then again, when one participates in a wonderful site, with a good community in the forums, it doesn't surprise so much when one thinks about it :)

I completely agree with what you say - and, living where I do, with time differences between "real life" and the realm, I'm likely to never get "Salty", simply because when these events are on, I am at work. So - I didn't stop to think about the entire Aquarium being "achievable" at all to be honest.

To be sure, there are some mini-grindy type things in there (Ironjaw, Crafty, 1, 2 & 5 rings), but they seem to be more "achievable" than the Darkwood Pole. And for the "more grindy" things (Sea Turtle, etc), there's a reason to fish for them - as you rightly say, there's little actual reason to fish for the Darkwood Pole, as it's easily surpassed by several other poles.

Mind... I'm still never going to part with mine ;-)

Hey! First post, long time reader.

Actually caught this today in Redridge, Lake Everstill south bank.

I fished up the pole after about 10 casts. RNG I guess.

  12. Lilitheen <Angler>, 1 month ago:

Well I decided yesterday I had to have this pole, mostly due to it's great looks...it just looks like something old, classy and well built know what I mean? The gold or brass fittings and reel against the darkwood just makes it a very sharp looking pole imho.

I also want it simply due to it's rarity.

Began the hunt last night in Ashenvale and actually I intend to fish the exact same spot until I'm successful. 300 casts so far, I'll let you know when it's mine.

I am taking Lilitheen's approach. I picked out a spot in Redridge last night and intend to not stop until I get it. According to my stats, I fish up a "non-fish" item on average of every 130ish cast. So far I have gotten several multi-pound catfish, a leather bag and a healing potion. My theory is the Darkwood Fishing Pole and all the other odd items comes from the same group of items available.

Just for giggles, I tested the "is the pole junk" thesis with an untrained toon and junk is clearly labeled as junk and returns the result as a cast failure in the Buddy window. When I pull up one of the other items (like the 19 pound catfish) it is not seen as a junk item.

This pole is on my pre-cata bucket list. I already have the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole, Bone Fishing Pole and the Jeweled Fishing Pole, I just want to make sure I have all of the poles available in the old game before that angry death wingy thing ruins our day.

Well I'm shocked...I've always had incredible luck fishing...got the Giant Sewer Rat the very first cast, the very first time I fished the Underbelly.

I got the Darkwood Pole tonight after 82 casts fishing the exact same spot I was last night.
300 casts last night and 82 tonight.

It is very sharp looking. Just fyi, I fished the exact same spot in Ashenvale as the previous poster that said he caught 2 in 100 casts, he posted a pic of his exact location as well.

Hi folks! I think we are onto something here. Up thread erir wrote:

I originally started at Lake Everstill and didn't get anywhere. Non-fish loot was less than 1%.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/stormbear/4855249497/sizes/o/

I even tried another toon and nada. On a lark, I tried fishing at the locale Erir mentioned and noticed that the percent of non-fish loot was noticeable higher than Lake Everstill. Almost a full 1%.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/stormbear/4855868944/sizes/o/

This got me thinking that the pole will have the greatest chance of dropping in areas where the non-fish loot is the greatest. Every time we get to a certain point, the RNG will spit out something like a mana potion or a 19 Pound Catfish. Well, I think that same loot table has the Darkwood Fishing Pole in it... so the more times we hit a chance of a random non-fish loot drop, the higher our chances of getting the pole to drop.

So I went looking for a higher drop rate pool and I didn't need to go far.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/stormbear/4855250449/sizes/o/

Iris Lake is right above the spot where Erir fished up two poles. I tried my luck there on three toons and all three fished up the pole with a non-fish loot drop rate of 1.7% to 2.1% - more than double that of Lake Everstill. Iris Lake is almost like a clock. Usually, but not always, on the 100th cast, up comes something from the non-fish loot table. If not the exact 100th, it was somewhere between 95-110 casts.

Let me know what your data is. I know I geeked out a bit too much on this, but I could just smell the Darkwood in the water!
