[Contests] Extravaganza

I have won the tournament 8 times, and helped in the winning of at least 12 more. Those are my qualifications, the following is how I did it.

    GENERAL

Rule #1: Set your hearth. If your hearth isn’t set to Booty Bay, don’t even bother

Rule #2: Fishing is different at the tournament. Although in the world you can really paint the edges of pools and still get whats in the pool, you cant at the tournament. If you get anything butm a Tastyfish, Oily Blacksmouth, Firefin Snapper, or Stranglekelp…you wasted a cast and more importantly time.

Rule #3: Fish where you can. I don’t care if the guy spits on me, or calls me every name in the book. If I think fishing in his pool will help me, Ima do it. Once a winner is declared make friends, pass up pools….but not before a winner is declared.

Rule #4: Starting position. I can only speak for my server, but I start in the same general area just north of grom gol. Many times the allies (my enemy) will take control of grom so you don’t want to stay TOO close to grom gol its self. However, you don’t want to start too far north either because the side island (Lots of water elementals on it- The Vile Reef) takes a few minutes after tournament starts to spawn pools. So ideally you want to have a couple pools under your belt before you cross over west. Obviously the flow of others, what my scout says, etc will determine which way I head. I generally head north until side island. I fish at least 4 pools on the side island then head ALL the way north to north island (Yojamba Isle). Obviously fishing all the pools along the way and listening to scout. I’m trying to make a reasonably sized video of this, but this should do for now. Besides im sick of typing!

HOW TO FISH "3 Casts, Then Baby Step"

This is really hard to explain in words. Before I take anyone on a tournament they must go through my training course (15min to learn lifetime to master) on how to fish and it's WAY easier to show then to explain. That being said, DISTANCE is the key. When you know how far you should be from a pool it is infinitely easier to fish pools quickly (the more times you go to the tournament the more you get to know each pool and the best place/distancea to stand for each). Since I can't show you what a good distance is (using my 30yrd range distract as a guide) it's about 15 yards or about 1.5 inches on your screen when you're zoomed out all the way from the center of the pool . I can not express how important distance is because once you get this down it will take MUCH less time to fish a pool. So ok distance, distance, distance then follow these steps (I'm sorry this is so long but it's really hard to type out what I can show most people in 30sec):

You ride up to a pool, and you cast off your mount as fast as possible about 15 yards away (all in one motion ideally). You probably won't be exactly where you want to be but, hopefully you’ll be close. Sometimes you can get lucky and this first "dismount cast" will be in the pool. If you get in the first time, cast again (Cast 1) from the same spot no matter what your distance is, you could get lucky again.
    a) If you got are at your 15yrd range casting off your mount, cast again (Cast 1). This cast went long and to the right. Cast 2 went long but on target. Cast 3 went short and to the right. After 3 out of pool casts its time to process the information and make a correcting baby step. You had two longs, one short, and two rights. If the casts were more long then off target (to the right) you would TAP (seriously TAP so you take a BABY step backwards) your back button once. If your casts were more to the right then long, you would take a baby step to the left (using strafe key). You repeat the 3-cast process. If you have 6 consecutive out of pools casts you either don't have the right distance, are at a half pool (always skip), or really unlucky. Either way readjust to another spot 15 yards away and start again (there are usually AT LEAST 3 spots at every pool where you can be 15 yards away from the center of the pool).
    b) If your dismount cast was way off and you are not 15 yards away get there now, and implement the 3 cast baby step rules.

I kid you not when you take the correct baby step more times then not your NEXT cast will be in the pool. Often times the simple act of TAKING a baby step in any direction will get one of your next 3 casts in the pool. I used to think this was all in my mind, but it works in the tournament, regular pool fishing, and I've had it work thousands and thousands of times in both scenarios. Furthermore when showing this to other people THEY become faster pool fishers. Lastly, I have gone head to head with people at tournaments and in the world.....when you get this down they can't keep up.

    HELP “Scout, Guard, Decoy”

Some will say this is cheating, but hey you want to win the tournament right? Ideally you have 3 friends who will take 20min out of their Sunday to help you, but I know this is rare at best. However, contrary to popular belief; if you have only 1 friend he MUST be the “scout”. The scout’s job is to find the fisher’s (the person trying to win the tournament) next pool. Should he go north? Should he go south? The scout needs to know at all times or ASAP: Is there another tournament contestant heading towards us? How many open pools are north/south of the fisher, and which is the closest. Is there a “flow” of contestants heading north or south and should we try and get ahead of the herd, or go the opposite way hoping to get their respawns in the opposite direction. The scout must also be the FIRST one to cross over to an island. In my starting position (see GENERAL) we only use two crossing points to the “side island” and the “north island”, the scout also must know if it worth the time to cross over to one of these islands (are there any pools there? Are there any other contestants fishing there?). Sometimes the scout has to guess, but it will be an educated guess, unlike a blind one most fishers are using. As you can see the scout must be if not more knowledgeable at least AS knowledge as the actual fisher. The experienced scout will also be able to be a decoy while he scouts (see following paragraphs)

So you can get 2 friends? Good, now you can add a body guard to your team. The bodyguard’s job is simple: keep the fisher fishing. Is there a croc near the next pool? Kill it. Is there an opposing faction fishing? Kill it. Above all else, you stay REAL close to the fisherman so he doesn’t have to worry about ever not having his pole equipped and in the water.

Holy Moly you have 3 friends, congrats. Although highly over rated this third person can be your decoy/secondary scout. Meaning once the scout tells the fisherman where the next pool they should go to is, the decoy goes first and “fake” fishes there. Fake fishing is simple: you cast, just NEVER in the pool merely around it. You can see how your scout could be a decoy, he finds the next pool, fakes fishes in it, and finds the next pools once the fisher gets there. If another contestant comes up to the decoy pool the decoy either fishes with the competition (thereby reducing their catches by half) or go scout another pool.

    Thanks for the write up!

    Some great tips.
Question about the "fake" fisher - if they do happen to cast into the pool itself, but they don't loot does that still count against the fish in the pool? (ie a get away)
    Just wondering about that.

  7. Marlburo <Extremely Salty>, 4 years ago:

Man i want to say no, cause it will happen. I don't the "real" answer though, I've never noticed less fish in a pool if you don't click the bobber. ima try and take a video today, but i have comcast which blizz is having trouble with, so im lagging HARD...well see though.

I don't know about get-aways but if you pull up a fish and don't take it out of the window it'll count against the pool. My recommendation would be to have them cast into the pool and when it bobs simply recast without even trying to loot. Should give the illusion that they really are fishing, and have no effect on fish count.

  9. Marlburo <Extremely Salty>, 4 years ago:

yeah lol i never even thought of casting again when the bobber goes, that would make it look like you were REALLY fishing. I usually just let it time out then cast again (lazy), and it doesn't seem to hurt your fish count.
