I won the contest today so I'm not posting this to complain or be a sore loser, but I think this would be better as a feat of strength as it is not consistent with other achievements. I'm all for keeping the title rare, but perhaps there is a way to keep only 52 potential Saltys a year while allowing people to attempt a win at any time, only once per week such as a timed fishing challenge (ie who can catch the most of a certain fish in a given amount of time) while keeping the original contest as something even more special than Salty. There are titles out there, such as "the Insane" that only require huge investments in time to complete and no skill, but that doesn't mean everyone is going to get it, personally I think the other fishing achievements are challenging enough as it is to complete without having to compete at exactly 2pm on a Sunday.
[Contests] Extravaganza in Salty achievement?
I have just finished with eight pages of comments and feel the need to throw in mine.
I have fished the tournament a grand total of four times. In those four times I was met with epic fail and frustration of being ganked and camped and ganked some more by friends of friends that were fishing.
Seems to me the only way to win this contest, at least on a high population pvp server like mine, is to belong to a large guild and bring them all along and have them stomp everything up and down the coast. Raze your own faction, kill and camp the other faction. If this sounds like the kind of achievement Blizz had in mind when they set the tournament in the Salty achievement then they have done a fine job.
I have seen the same gankers and campers friends win three out of the four times I have attempted this. Probably gankers and campers working the other coast won the other time.
This is the last achievement I need to get the Salty. As it stands I don't see how I will ever get it.The only skill and tactics needed here is nine lives and a crew of rogues to watch your back. Obviously my vote is take it out of the achievement. Make it a guild or group competition achievement, as it seems to be that anyway. That way parties of folks could get it that Sunday.
Here's an idea, The Stranglethorn Vale Combat Arena Tournament Fishing Achievement, combat fishing at it worst. You get a hat and a T-shirt saying "I survived it !" Oh yeah and the name tag.

in defense of the tournament.....after 4 times you're still learning.
I doubt that it will be changed, but I would like to see the Extravaganza removed from the title. As an achievement, winning the contest seems far more like a feat of strength than anything else and it makes the Salty title sort of arbitrary. I'd rather see a flat-out "how many hours spent fishing" or some huge crazy number of fish caught as a requirement than the Extravaganza.
And I'll back frankOz up by saying that - on my server - it's a mess of poor sportsmanship, to say the least. I'm not even on a PVP server, but I see huge mounts covering pools, NPCs pulled onto other players, people jumping on lures, etc. It's a display of the worst behavior in all of Azeroth, and I hate being out there week after week trying to wade through the jerks.
I may be off in thinking this, but I like playing with a sort of fisherman's code. I like seeing tauren trying to hide in the back corner of Ironforge, dressed up in their finest fishing gear. If I'm out and about and someone else is fishing pools in the same area, I try to make sure we aren't stepping on each other's toes. Since the title is sort of the only prominent way to show fishing pride, I find it inconsistent with the spirit of the profession to make the contest a requirement for Salty.
And besides all that, I think perseverance, rather than simply luck, should be the deciding factor for Salty.
Personally I'm in defense of keeping the Extravaganza in the Salty title requirement... Titles are supposed to be rare, this is one of the few that has a limiter on how many people can obtain it. Remove the Extravaganza, and Salty becomes a title you can AFK-click your way to obtaining.
Skill or luck, whatever you want to call it, it takes both. You need luck on your side for avoiding junk catches, having your bobber actually land in the pool, spawns of pools being nearby, and no competition in the area... You need skill to know where to stand to help your bobber land in the pool easier, to avoid the still-bugged pools that make you spend most of your time getting 'Water too shallow', to know when to switch areas because of overcompetition...
It's actually one of the few consistently fun challenges left in this game, and I only get out there on time for it maybe every third week... Today I managed my 6th win in about 4 years... once before 2.0, one shortly after TBC came out, one right before and one right after 3.0, and one shortly after WotLK before I hit 80, plus today (Aug23). I like to call it... defending my Saltyness.
You wanna be Salty? You gotta outfish the competition. Salty is for the best of the best of us that ever hooked a Nightcrawler on our fishing line... Get fishing.
I got it yesterday. It was my forth time *really trying* to win. I would have to say those that are complaining are probably not trying. For the forth time I had actually planned to run it next week as my research wasn't fully complete but tried anyway.
If you want to remove Salty fine, but I would say that you get another title in place.
All the other fishing tasks for salty are luck based, the STVE has very little luck involved if you want to win.
While I think the contest gives us all something to strive for and is a great motivator, I think it is very luck-based to be honest, at least when you think of the contest as a one time encounter.
Yesterday I was at 35 fish when the winner was announced and I was bloody unlucky for the first 8-9 minutes:
- Yojamba, which I always start at, had basically no pools spawning in the first three minutes.
- Moreover, the first 5 pools I fished had *one* tastyfish each, while the rest was stranglekelp etc.I really know what I should do, have the pots stacked etc, but there is nothing really I can do about catching firefin snappers or stranglekelp.
Having said that, I know that the probability of being so unlucky in, let's say, 10 tries is really low and so the luck factor's importance might drop quite a lot.
However if you take into consideration various things like: pool spawns probability, catch rate probability, let alone the mammoth-blocking issues - I wouldn't dare to say it has very little luck involved.

i won it the second week it was announced ages back
and have won it three other times as well
just gotta do it every week
and not give up
sometimes things just will work your way
losing again and again and again, just makes it feel that much better when you finally do win
if its really that bad and winning is so important to you you could always just change servers or pay people to protect of you something.. although i've won it on two different servers, both pvp, and i can say that both of them took a whole bunch of sundays
skill can only take you so far with the tourney and fishing in general, at the end of the day, luck will always be a considerable factor of fishingjust don't be negative and convince yourself that you can never win, because you can, every week somebody wins, often times its not the person who has like five people protecting them trying to help win it, just some random person who got lucky with spots and few junk fish
just don't give upThe tournament should grant its own title "shady" and not salty considering that is seemingly what you need to be to win nowadays. Has nothing to do with fishing anymore. Just my 2 cents.
This is complete and utter "QQing" on my part, so feel free to disregard.
I will never be able to win the Extravaganza, at least not with my current job (which I don't see quitting anytime soon).
I NEVER get Sundays off, and I work graveyard shift. Moreover, my job is in the direct-care field. Meaning not only does it suck to go to work with not enough sleep (as it would with any job), it is DANGEROUS. How am I supposed to explain to a patient that I accidentally injured them while attempting to treat their wounds or assist with their rehab because I was sleepy due to being awake at 2pm (which is like 2*am* to me) trying to win a computerized fishing contest?
I really, really wanted to get the Salty title for one of my toons, but I just don't see it happening. And it sucks to know that the only thing keeping me from it is the timing of the event.
Personally I would rather see them replace the contest requirement for "Salty" with a few of the rare catches that AREN'T part of the achievement. Heck, I WANT a reason to fish for the Giant Sewer Rat, and it'd be interesting to make people catch Old Crafty AND Old Ironjaw! Hanging out in an enemy city long enough to actually catch the one that isn't "yours" shows dedication to the sport, no?
Actually I was kinda irritated to learn Old Ironjaw WASN'T part of the title, AFTER I'd caught him (and it took forever, as you can imagine).
Ah well. I'm really bummed to know that I'll never get that title despite my love for fishing and all the work I've put into it, but I suppose Blizz has to do what Bzlizz has to do.
*shrugs*
The salty title shows you're litterally at one with the fishes, it's a shame some people won't be able to get it but the opportunity is there to remove the biggest fishing challenge in the game from the title would be a slap in the face of all those who have worked their ass off to get it.
I completely agree with this statement.
Salty would be a massively lesser achievement if it did not include winning one of the derbies. Personally I think it should be expanded to include a requirement for winning both competitions as well as Old Crafty, Ironjaw, turtle mount, and Giant Rat.
I'm sorry but if you can't make a Sunday that's just too bad. There is nothing wrong with having extremely difficult achievements that are not attainable for many, or most people. I really hate the culture of handing everything to players on a plate and letting even the most inept complete all the things there are to achieve.
Salty means you have patience, above all else, but the inclusion of having to win one of the competitions means you have strategy as well. For the Kala'uk derby, less so, that is a lot more luck than the STV competition, and it is for that reason that I chose to target the STV competition instead.
There are many excellent suggestions for a strategy to win STV. I did it on a very busy PvP server and I did it solo without any support from my guild or friends. Knowing where to fish, how to fish, when to fish, how to avoid enemy faction players, how to avoid same faction competitors, all of this is part of the achievement of winning this competition and taking that out of the equation simply reduces the title to a time-sink grind with absolutely no skill or experience involved.
Salty...
Its really a title about dealing with multiple RNGs along with standard collecting, fishing for things and places you never would otherwise.
However they stuck in one achievement that is completely at odds with the theme of all the others: where people can interfere on a fixed schedule.
Adding the derby is more of a slap at people who enjoy/addicted fishing but find sunday is a bad day, since it is 99% lottery. If they really wanted to improve it while still keeping it "exclusive" a rotation varying the day and time would have been best. Yes, it would end up being during "raid times" or the middle of the night sometimes, but blocking out an hour every sunday not only has real life implications for many but has structured everything ingame to do the same.
For the record, I have 6 characters (with 8 STV wins, 1 derby) that would only need to grind for the title. Good luck claiming I am biased because I "need" this contest to finish :)
I don't think I will ever finish it on any of them though. They mostly fish as a part of doing other things, not sitting in old zones for days on end.
Salty...blah.
I have Salty, but got mine in the Kaluak derby, not STV. If a disticntion was made, it would not bother me. Make STV a Feat of Strength with another title. I may try it tomorrow. my realm had no winner in the kalu'ak derby yesterday. maybe no more interest in fishing, and I can fish in peace. have to go fishing for real at 6am.

PiggyWiggy <Salty>, 1 year ago:
It should not be removed at all. There are some great strategies that can be used to win the Derby. The Kaluak Derby is pure luck when fishing schools. Some placement strategies can be used in that one. I have yet to win the Kaluak contest, but I will try till I get it, cause I need those boots.
The STV contest I've won 3 times out of the 4 times I've tried. I also helped my guildmate win it on his first attempt.
Leave it in. Leave Salty exclusive. Part of fishing is strategy.
I've already seen one hard to get title nerfed and I'll honestly say I'd rather not see it happen again.
I just recently completed Master Angler after over two years of effort. I knew going in that it is a very difficult achievement (just as I knew exactly what the Insane grind was going to be like) and I steeled myself to doing it.
Taking out the tourney requirements would be to the detriment of the title. Only 104 or so people a year can win on each server, which means that outside of server first raid titles and certain PvP titles, Salty is one of the rarest titles in game today, if not the rarest.
Tourney wins personify fishing. Part skill, part luck, winning the tourney is all about being in the right place at the right time with the right strategy.
Totally disagree with original post.. I have been playing for about 4 months now and already won the extravaganza twice.. there is a lot of skilled involved in this and if anything is the most proud acheivement of them all for any angler.. I have strategies that have helped not only myself but another person win it for their first time (with a little help from me killing any horde or marked pvpers in his way too)
Wait... what are we talking about?
I worked *hard* to get the Salty title. So there are requirements that are difficult - I think that's part of the point. Can't fish on weekends? Well, stop worrying about it. Find another challenging achievment and move on.
My only wish would be that maxing out the professions should gain you some advantage. Perhaps a better casting accuracy for fishing?
Sorry, Minivini and all you that have the opinion of "It's too bad you can't fish on Sundays(and now Saturdays)" No this isn't right, since the time is restricted it makes PERFECT sense for this to be a Feat of Strength, not part of the achievement.
I have worked double shift on Sundays for seven years, and two years ago, they decided I'd be double shift on Saturday, as well. Unlike some of you who are unemployed or dependent on others, I cannot quit my job, and in this economy it's not a real option to find another. I cannot get this achievement, unless say, it's a holiday, and every other WoW fisherman is going to be out there, too. It's ridiculous really. It doesn't add to the rarity, you know what does?: One that Didn't Get Away.
Players that have Salty and are saying it'll take away from you, GUESS WHAT? Most of you have said you've won it multiple times! It's obviously not hard for you! The ones who are complaining, are the ones who can't even get ONE opportunity to compete in a single tournament. So get over yourselves, it should be changed.
Eh, I work on Saturdays and Sundays, straight through the derby and STV extravaganza.
I get an hour for lunch though, and it took me about six months to get the kaluak derby. The STV one wasn't as bad. That one only took me like 3-4 months. I don't remember. But, if the title's important to you, you'll find a way to get out there and fish.. =D I remember when I got my STV one, it was during the super bowl. >.< The year the saints won. I figured less players would be on during the superbowl, so I had an advantage. I also enlisted the help of some of my friends, to roam the beaches, distrupting fellow horde anglers, or kill the Alliance punks. Hehe' It was such fun times when I was doing those stupid derbies. I hope they stay like this forever.
